AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
In papermaking machines, the wear of seal strips in suction rolls is difficult to monitor due to their location inside the rotating shell, leading to unknown conditions and potential failures.
Method used
A wear monitoring system for seal strips in suction rolls, comprising a sensor with conductive layers and a resistive layer embedded in the seal strip, which measures resistance changes to detect wear.
Benefits of technology
The system allows for reliable detection of seal strip wear, enabling timely maintenance and preventing failures by correlating resistance changes with the extent of wear.

Abstract
A seal strip of a suction roll of a paper machine having a wear monitoring system includes: a seal strip having an upper surface; and a wear monitoring system. The wear monitoring system includes a sensor comprising a first conductive layer, a second conductive layer, and a resistive layer, the first and second conductive layers being mounted on the resistive layer, the second conductive layer being separated from the first conductive layer. The wear monitoring system further comprises a signal processor electrically connected to the first and second conductive layers and configured to process signals related to resistance between the first and second conductive layers. The sensor is at least partially embedded in the seal strip.
