AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional polyurea-based microcapsules for phase change materials (PCMs) suffer from poor thermal stability and compactness due to fast reaction rates and binary linear structures, limiting their applications.

Method used

A microencapsulated phase change material is developed using a polyurea polymer formed by reacting a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic polyisocyanates with a specific mole ratio of amino groups, encapsulating a core of C6-20 fatty acid ester and fatty acid, with a composition that includes an oil and water phase component.

Benefits of technology

The solution provides PCM microcapsules with excellent thermal stability, maintaining compactness and preventing core material leakage during repeated use.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a microencapsulated phase change material having a shell material encapsulating a core material, wherein the core material comprises a phase change material comprising a C6-20 fatty acid ester and a C6-20 fatty acid, wherein the weight ratio of the fatty acid ester to the fatty acid is from 10: 1 to 200: 1; and wherein the shell material comprises a polyurea polymer, which is formed by reacting a mixture of an aliphatic polyisocyanate having an average NCO functionality of higher than 2 and an aromatic polyisocyanate having an average NCO functionality of higher than 2 with an amine compound having at least two amino functional groups, wherein the mole ratio of amino to NCO-is from 0.5: 1 to 3: 1. The microencapsulated phase change material has excellent thermal stability and compactness.
