AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing battery binders, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), lack electrocatalytic activity and are not processable in both organic and aqueous solvents, limiting their performance in lithium-ion and other batteries, particularly in suppressing the polysulfide shuttle effect.

Method used

Development of a non-conjugated polymer linked with redox active moieties like ferrocene and anthraquinone, which can act as both a binder and electrocatalyst, forming inclusion complexes with host compounds for improved electrochemical performance.

Benefits of technology

The new binder provides stable specific capacity beyond 1000 charge-discharge cycles, high coulombic efficiency, and long cycle life, suitable for high-performance batteries like electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a binder for electrochemical device comprising a non-conjugated polymer linked with a redox active moiety, wherein the non-conjugated polymer is selected from poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline), vinyl polymer, polyurethane polymer, zwitterionic polymer, polythiourea polymer and a combination thereof and the redox active moiety is selected from ferrocene, anthraquinone and a combination thereof, wherein the non-conjugated polymer is linked with redox active moiety by carbonyl linkage, carbamate linkage, amide linkage, N-substitution or hexamethylene group and comprises of amide functionality, and optionally a host compound selected from cyclodextrin, azido cyclodextrin, calix(n)arene derivative, cucurbit(7)uril derivative, polyethylene glycol polymer and a combination thereof. The present invention further discloses a process for preparation thereof of the binder, an electrode comprising the binder and an electrochemical cell or a battery comprising the binder of the present invention. The present invention discloses the non-conjugated polymer linked with redox active moiety which can act as binder and electrocatalyst in the batteries. The battery with the binder of present invention showed the best-known performance of a stable specific capacity beyond 1000 charge-discharge cycles.
