AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for detecting and quantifying tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS) in large water pipeline networks, particularly in remote locations of oil and gas facilities, are challenging due to the complexity of pipeline networks and operational fluctuations, making it difficult to monitor biocide residual concentrations effectively.

Method used

An analyzer is developed with a peristaltic pump, three-way and six-way valves, a reaction coil, debubbler, and a flow cell with LEDs for measuring KMnO4 absorption, utilizing a 2-point calibration procedure to determine THPS concentration, capable of real-time monitoring and switching between slug and non-slug modes based on concentration levels.

Benefits of technology

The analyzer provides accurate, real-time detection and quantification of THPS with a dynamic range of 80-2000 ppm, achieving measurement accuracy within ±20% of the actual concentration, suitable for large pipeline networks and remote locations, ensuring effective microbial control.

Abstract

An analyzer is disclosed for detecting and quantifying a tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate (THPS) composition in a water sample. The analyzer includes a peristaltic pump and a three-way valve, where the peristaltic pump draws in a water sample that includes a THPS composition through the 3-way valve. The analyzer also includes a 6-way valve that receives the water sample and a potassium permanganate reagent, and a reaction coil in which the water sample and the KMnO4 reagent are mixed and reacted. The analyzer further includes a debubbler that remove bubbles from the mixture; and a flow cell that receives the mixture from the debubbler, measures an intensity of KMnO4 absorption in the mixture, normalizes the measured intensity by subtracting a background intensity, and determine a presence and a concentration of the THPS composition in the water sample.
