Localization of META data for remote data access

Abstract

The approach described in this disclosure can enable remote data, including cloud data, to be accessed as if it were local data, including original file characteristics and properties. The process includes generating the corresponding metadata from the remote source(s) locally and enabling secured pass-through read-only access to the remote data. Localizing the metadata eliminates the need to migrate, copy, or cache the data first. Even though the operating system, application, and user see the localized file with its full and original characteristics, the metadata is extremely small, thus saving local storage space and expanding the amount of remote data that can be accessed on the local disk.
