It is particularly directed to a caulking tape system configured to define a clean, uniform channel for the application of sealants, grouts, or other joint-filling materials in construction, tiling, glazing, and cladding applications.Background of the Invention
[0002] In construction, glazing, and surface-finishing work, it is frequently necessary to apply a sealant, grout, or similar filler material between adjacent substrates to provide a clean and sealed junction. Achieving a uniform joint line while avoiding overflow of filler material onto visible surfaces can be difficult, particularly along long seams or in corner regions. Traditional approaches often rely on the manual placement of two separate masking tape strips along the sides of a joint, leaving a channel between them for the filler. This process can be time-consuming and prone to inconsistency, as even slight misalignment of the tape strips may result in uneven joint widths or contamination of the substrate surfaces with excess material.

For example, GB 2 588 380 A (William, published 28 April 2021) discloses a seam-sealing tape comprising strips with slots and alignment marks visible through removable films. In use, the films are peeled away to expose the slots through which sealant can be applied. Although such systems allow visual alignment, they typically involve discontinuous strips that must be cut or torn to length and include bridging portions or removable films that complicate application and removal.
[0004] Similarly, US 2008 / 0085366 A1 (Liam et al., published 10 April 2008) describes a tape for caulking or grouting corners, having two double-sided adhesive strips attached to a backing strip and folded in half along its length. The folded configuration is pressed into a corner joint and unfolded to adhere to the adjoining surfaces. While useful for corner sealing, this arrangement requires a divider strip to prevent adhesionwithin the roll and is limited to folded configurations rather than flat application on planar joints.
[0005] A further approach is shown in US 2022 / 0048067 A1 (Wold, published 17 February 2022), which discloses a rapid caulk tape system comprising a single strip with two longitudinal perforations defining a non-adhesive region. After the tape is applied, the central section is torn away to form a channel for sealant. This design relies on tearing along perforations, which can lead to irregular edges and incomplete separation, particularly in longer runs, and can also be difficult to manufacture consistently.

There remains a need for a simpler and more reliable arrangement that enables rapid, accurate placement of masking strips with a fixed, predetermined spacing, that can be dispensed directly from a roll in flat form, and that allows clear visual alignment prior to application of the filler material.

The cover strip spans a central region defining a nominal gap corresponding to the desired joint width.

The masking tape strips 103 are positioned on either side of a nominal central gap 106 which is defined by the spacing between the inner edges of the masking tape strips 103 and corresponds approximately to the joint width between a pair of adjacent substrates 112. Each masking tape strip 103 has an adhesive underside configured to adhere to the upper edge surfaces 114 of the respective substrates during use, while the underside of the cover strip 104 includes adhesive only at its lateral edge portions to adhere to the upper surfaces of the masking tape strips 103.

Claims
Claims1. A caulking tape system comprising:adjacent substrates defining a gap between respective edge surfaces;a cylindrical roll of caulking tape, the caulking tape comprising:a pair of masking tape strips held in spaced-apart parallel arrangement by a wider transparent cover strip, the cover strip having an adhesive underside configured to adhere to upper surfaces of the masking tape strips, each masking tape strip having an adhesive underside configured for adherence to the respective edge surfaces in use, the masking tape strips being spaced apart by a nominal gap defined by a central region of the cover strip between the masking tape strips, the nominal gap being selected according to a width of the gap between the adjacent substrates;wherein the masking tape strips are not connected directly to one another by any portions bridging therebetween and are joined only by the transparent cover strip, and wherein the caulking tape includes no additional removable divider, backing, or bridging strip between the masking tape strips;wherein the caulking tape is retained flat on the roll so as to be dispensable therefrom in a planar formation; andwherein, in use, the caulking tape is dispensed flat from the roll such that the masking tape strips are pressed against and adhered to the edge surfaces of the adjacent substrates while maintaining central alignment by viewing the gap through the transparent cover strip, the transparent cover strip being peelable away to leave the masking tape strips adhered in place, caulking material being thereafter applied into the gap, and the masking tape strips being subsequently removable together with any excess caulking material to leave a clean caulk joint.
2. The caulking tape system of claim 1, wherein the nominal gap between the masking tape strips is approximately 3 mm for use with grout or epoxy filler materials between adjacent substrates.
3. The caulking tape system of claim 2, wherein the nominal gap between the masking tape strips is approximately 6 mm for use with caulking joints at 90-degree corner surfaces.
4. The caulking tape system of claim 3, wherein the nominal gap between the masking tape strips is approximately 11 mm for use with external cladding or brickwork expansion joints.
5. The caulking tape system of claim 4, wherein outer edges of the transparent cover strip extend beyond respective outer edges of the masking tape strips to facilitate lifting and removal of the cover strip without disturbing adhesion of the masking tape strips.
6. The caulking tape system of claim 5, wherein the transparent cover strip extends beyond each respective outer edge of the masking tape strips by a width approximately half of that defined between the masking tape strips.
7. The caulking tape system of claim 6, wherein the extension of the transparent cover strip beyond the masking tape strips enables adjacent caulking tape sections to be aligned edge-to-edge such that, upon removal of the cover strips, the gaps between respective masking tape strips are equal, permitting multiple parallel joints to be formed with uniform spacing.
8. The caulking tape system of claim 7, wherein the transparent cover strip is formed from a flexible plastic material.
9. The caulking tape system of claim 8, wherein the transparent cover strip is formed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
10. The caulking tape system of claim 9, wherein the masking tape strips are formed from a paper-based material.
11. The caulking tape system of claim 10, wherein the transparent cover strip comprises an adhesive weaker than that of the masking tape strips such that removal of the cover strip does not lift the masking tape strips from the surfaces.
12. The caulking tape system of claim 11 , wherein the transparent cover strip includes a central line of weakness, crease, or perforation to facilitate bending of the tape along internal or external corners during application.
13. The caulking tape system of claim 12, wherein the caulking tape is wound on the roll such that the transparent cover strip forms the outermost layer.
14. The caulking tape system of claim 13, wherein the underside of the transparent cover strip comprises adhesive portions that adhere to upper surfaces of the masking tape strips such that, when the caulking tape is dispensed from the roll, the masking tape strips are carried together with the cover strip in a fixed spaced-apart arrangement.
15. The caulking tape system of claim 14, wherein the transparent cover strip is tear resistant to maintain integrity when peeled away after the masking tape strips are adhered.
16. The caulking tape system of claim 15, wherein the transparent cover strip includes printed or embossed guide markings parallel to the masking tape strips to assist in alignment along the joint.
17. The caulking tape system of claim 16, wherein the transparent cover strip is configured to be removed in a single continuous pulling action along the roll length without lifting the masking tape strips from the edge surfaces.
18. The caulking tape system of claim 17, wherein the masking tape strips and transparent cover strip are co-extruded or laminated in a manufacturing process that maintains consistent spacing between the masking tape strips.
19. The caulking tape system of claim 1, wherein the central region of the transparent cover strip aligned with the nominal gap is substantially free of adhesive to prevent adhesion to the substrates during application and to facilitate smooth unrolling of the caulking tape from the roll.
20. The caulking tape system of claim 19, wherein outer edge portions of the transparent cover strip extending beyond the masking tape strips are also substantially free of adhesive so that they do not adhere to the substrates during use.
21. The caulking tape system of claim 20, wherein longitudinal adhesive lines are provided on the underside of the transparent cover strip in positions corresponding to the masking tape strips so that the adhesive lines adhere to upper surfaces of the masking tape strips while leaving the central region and any outer edge portions of the transparent cover strip substantially free of adhesive.
22. The caulking tape system of claim 21, wherein the longitudinal adhesive lines extend continuously along the length of the transparent cover strip to maintain fixed spacing between the masking tape strips during winding, storage, and dispensing of the caulking tape.
23. The caulking tape system of claim 22, wherein the adhesive of the longitudinal lines exhibits a bond strength weaker than that of the adhesive on the undersides ofthe masking tape strips so that the transparent cover strip can be peeled away without detaching the masking tape strips from the substrates.
24. A method of forming a joint between adjacent substrates using the caulking tape system of claim 1, the method comprising the steps of:applying the caulking tape across a gap between edge surfaces of the adjacent substrates so that the masking tape strips adhere respectively to the edge surfaces while the transparent cover strip spans the gap;removing the transparent cover strip to expose a channel defined between the masking tape strips;dispensing filler material into the channel to occupy the gap between the adjacent substrates; andremoving the masking tape strips after partial curing of the filler material to leave a clean, uniformly bounded joint.
25. The method of claim 24, wherein prior to applying the caulking tape, the edge surfaces of the substrates are cleaned to remove dust, oil, or other contaminants to improve adhesion of the masking tape strips.
26. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is dispensed from the cylindrical roll while maintaining it in a planar formation, the masking tape strips being simultaneously applied in their spaced-apart arrangement as the tape is unrolled.
27. The method of claim 24, wherein the transparent cover strip is peeled away by lifting an overlapping outer edge of the cover strip and drawing it rearwardly along the length of the joint while leaving the masking tape strips adhered to the substrates.
28. The method of claim 24, wherein the filler material is dispensed into the exposed channel through a nozzle or caulking gun, the masking tape strips preventing overflow of the filler material onto visible surfaces of the substrates.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein after the filler material has been applied, the surface of the filler material is smoothed using a tool or blade before the masking tape strips are removed.
30. The method of claim 29, wherein the masking tape strips are peeled away after partial curing of the filler material, removing with them any excess filler material deposited adjacent the edges of the joint.
31. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is applied to internal or external corners by folding the transparent cover strip along a central line of weakness such that the masking tape strips adhere to intersecting surfaces of the substrates.
32. The method of claim 24, wherein the nominal gap between the masking tape strips is selected according to the intended application, including approximately 3 mm for grout joints, approximately 6 mm for corner caulking, and approximately 11 mm for external or expansion joints.
33. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is applied in successive parallel lengths, the outer edges of the transparent cover strips of adjacent lengths being aligned to produce multiple joints of uniform spacing after the cover strips are removed.
34. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is used for forming joints between glass panels, between external cladding sections, between tiles, or along control joints in masonry or concrete substrates.
35. The method of claim 34, wherein the filler material comprises a sealant, grout, silicone, polyurethane, epoxy, or equivalent curable composition selected according to the joint type and exposure conditions.
36. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is progressively peeled from the roll and applied along the joint while simultaneously pressing the masking tape strips onto the edge surfaces of the substrates, enabling continuous sealing along extended joint lengths.
37. The method of claim 24, wherein the transparent cover strip is removed in a single continuous pulling action along the length of the joint prior to or during dispensing of the filler material.
38. The method of claim 24, wherein the caulking tape is applied to external fagades, tiled surfaces, or glazing systems to produce uniform, residue-free joints with visually straight boundaries.
