Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an interruption for an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) transmission. In one aspect of this solution, a terminal device establishes a connection via a primary cell towards a network device. The terminal device then receives a first indication for performing a cell procedure on a cell from the network device, and the cell is operating with an OD-SSB. No interruption due to a measurement is allowed until a second indication associated with an OD-SSB transmission of the cell is received.

[0047] Fig. 1B illustrates two cases of on-demand SSB operation. As shown in Fig. 1B, in case 1, there is no regular (always-on) SSB transmission in the SCell and only on-demand SSBs may be triggered from time to time. In case 2, there is an always-on SSB transmission in the SCell and on-demand SSBs may be triggered additionally.

[0048] It also agreed to use a radio resource control (RRC) based signaling and / or a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC CE) based signaling to indicate or activate the OD-SSB transmission on the cell. The OD-SSB is assumed being transmitted when UE receives such signaling. The signaling herein may be called OD-SSB indication message / command or first indication.

[0049] For a cell supporting on-demand SSB SCell operation, the RRC based signaling is supported to indicate on-demand SSB transmission on the cell, and the MAC CE based signaling is supported to indicate on-demand SSB transmission on the cell. In addition, it is to be further studied whether to supported a downlink control information (DCI) based signaling to indicate on-demand SSB transmission on the cell. The DCI based signaling does not provide SCell activation / deactivation.

[0050] The impact on interruption requirements due to OD-SSB indication is to be discussed. For OD-SSB scenarios, it was agreed to discuss OD-SSB based SCell activation requirements based on following RAN1 agreed scenarios: Case #1 and Scenario #2; Case #1 and Scenario #2A; Case #2 and Scenario #2; or Case #2 and Scenario #2A. It’s noted that follow RAN1 definition on the scenarios and cases, and this list can be updated pending on RAN1 further agreement.

[0051] It is to be noted that scenario 2 refers to the scenario where there is an indication from the network which triggers the OD-SSB between T1 and T2. Scenario #2A refers to the scenario where there is an indication from the network which triggers the OD-SSB “when UE receives SCell activation command” . Scenario #3A refers to the scenario where there is an indication from the network which triggers the OD-SSB “after UE receives SCell activation command until SCell activation is completed” . Scenario #3B refers to the scenario where there is an indication from the network which triggers the OD-SSB “when SCell activation is completed and SCell is activated” or “after SCell activation is completed and SCell is activated” . For discussion purpose, always-on SSB is SSB supported in legacy e.g. Rel-18 specifications.

[0052] For deactivated SCell measurement requirement, it was agreed to discuss OD-SSB based deactivated SCell measurement and SCell activation requirement which including both FR1 and FR2-1.

[0053] For OD-SSB based deactivated SCell measurement before OD-SSB indication, in (Case #1 Scenario #2) and (Case #1, Scenario #2A) , UE is not expected to perform the SSB based deactivated SCell L3 measurement before OD-SSB is triggered.

[0054] The UE requirements for interruption are defined for respective RRM procedures in different scenarios. They specify the maximum allowed interruption length as well as the victim cells at certain UE behavior. For instance, when the UE is receiving SCell addition / release message to add or release an SCell, this may cause the interruptions on any active serving cell in SA carrier aggregation (CA) operation. The interruption length is defined for intra-band CA and inter-band CA respectively. The interruption is caused by the UE due to need for turning on the additional receiver or retuning the receiver which is assumed to be used for newly added SCell. For this, the UE is allowed to cause interruptions.

[0055] Similarly, there will likely also be interruptions when UE receives SCell activation / deactivation, and when the UE is performing measurements on deactivated SCell. For interruptions at SCell addition / release, when any number of SCells between one and 7 is added or released using the same RRCConnectionReconfiguration message as defined in TS 38.331, the UE is allowed an interruption on any active serving cell during the RRC reconfiguration procedure as specified in TS 38.133 clause 8.2

[0056] For these procedures, the interruptions are caused because UE needs to turn on or retuning its radio frequency (RF) in order to receive SSBs from the SCell. The interruptions may refer to the interruptions due to a measurement or include at least the interruptions due to a measurement. Taking SCell addition as example in Fig. 1C, when UE receives the RRCReconfiguration message to add SCell into CA operation, it needs to switch on RF on SCell in order to receive SSB for the measurements on deactivated SCell. This RF retuning behavior on the SCell may cause interruptions on PCell and other active SCells (if configured) . Note, the exact time when the interruption occurs is not specified.

[0057] However, if the SCell is in OD-SSB operation especially in Case 1, there is no SSBs to be measured before the OD-SSB is triggered / activated via the OD-SSB signalling message. It was also agreed that the UE is not expected (required) to perform the SSB based deactivated SCell L3 measurements before OD-SSB is triggered. Therefore, it is not necessary for the UE to switch on or retune the RF immediately upon receiving a SCell addition message, as there is no SSB, and the UE is not able to receive any SSB to for example measure after RF retuning. More importantly, the UE need not turn on or retune the receiver chain for SCell measurements before any reference signal (in this example SSB) is available for measurements. The existing interruption requirements are too relaxed and to be changed considering the OD-SSB availability.

[0058] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a solution is provided for determining an interruption for an OD-SSB transmission. In this way, unnecessary interruption is avoided. Therefore, the communication efficiency is improved. Principles and implementations of embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to Figs. 2-9.

[0059] Fig. 2 illustrates a signaling chart illustrating an example process 200 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to Fig. 1A. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120. It would be appreciated that although the process 200 has been described in relation to the communication system 100 of Fig. 1A, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios with similar issues.

[0060] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 establishes 210 a connection 215 via a primary cell towards the network device 120. Correspondingly, the network device 120 establishes 220 a connection 215 via a primary cell with the terminal device 110. The primary cell is managed by the network device 120, i.e., the cell 101 as shown in Fig. 1A.

[0061] Continuing with reference to Fig. 2, the network device 120 transmits 225 a first indication 230 for performing a cell procedure on a cell to the terminal device 110, and the cell is operating with an OD-SSB. At 240, no interruption due to a measurement is allowed until a second indication associated with an OD-SSB transmission of the cell is received.

[0062] In some embodiments, the first indication 230 may indicate that the cell is to be added, the cell is to be released, the cell is to be activated, or the cell is to be deactivated. For example, the first indication 230 may be a RRCReconfiguration message to add the cell into an operation. In addition, the cell may comprise a SCell, a primary secondary cell (PSCell) or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) SCell.

[0063] On the side of the communication, the terminal device 110 receives 235 the first indication 230 for performing a cell procedure on a cell from the network device 120. The cell is operating with an OD-SSB, and no interruption due to a measurement is allowed until a second indication associated with an OD-SSB transmission of the cell is received. Alternatively or additionally, an interruption due to a measurement may be allowed after the second indication is received. The interruption may refer e.g. to an interruption on the PCell and / or the connection towards the primary cell in order to enable measurements on the cell, e.g. a SCell. The interruptions due to a measurement may be the existing interruptions at SCell addition / release or SCell activation / deactivation as specified in TS 38.133 clause 8.2. It may also be part of the existing interruption as the UE may need perform some RF activities other than measurement when receiving the first indication.

[0064] In some embodiments, the second indication may indicate an OD-SSB transmission is to be activated on the cell or the OD-SSB transmission is to be deactivated on the cell. For example, the second indication may be an OD-SSB indication, an OD-SSB activation message, or an OD-SSB deactivation message. The OD-SSB indication or the OD-SSB activation message is used to trigger the OD-SSB transmission on a cell and the OD-SSB deactivation message (or similar method) is used to stop the OD-SSB transmission on a cell.

[0065] For instance, when a SCell is in an OD-SSB operation, no interruption is allowed at SCell addition and SCell activation and deactivated SCell measurements before OD-SSB is triggered. In an example, the interruption requirement at SCell addition may be applied if the OD-SSB has been triggered before receiving a SCell addition message or the OD-SSB indication messages comes together with or captured in the SCell addition. In another example, the interruption requirement at SCell activation may be applied if OD-SSB has been triggered before receiving the SCell activation message or the OD-SSB indication message comes together with or captured in the SCell activation. In yet another example, the interruption requirement during measurements on deactivated SCell may be applied only if OD-SSB has been triggered on the deactivated SCell before receiving a SCell addition message.

[0066] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit the second indication to the terminal device 110. Correspondingly, the terminal device 110 may receive the second indication from the network device 120. Alternatively or additionally, the first indication 230 and the second indication may be comprised in a same message. In other words, the first indication and the second indication may be transmitted separately or together. In addition, the second indication may be received via a MAC CE, a DCI signaling or an RRC signaling.

[0067] In addition, the interruption due to a measurement may include the interruption at receiving the first indication 230 and / or the interruption at receiving the second indication. For example, the interruption may be allowed at a cell addition and a cell activation.

[0068] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine an allowed interruption based on the second indication. For instance, interruption requirements relating to the allowed interruption may be determined based on the starting at the OD-SSB indication / activation and at the OD-SSB deactivation. In some embodiments, in order to determine the allowed interruption, the terminal device 110 may determine a length of the allowed interruption, on at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed, or a combination of above two items.

[0069] The terminal device 110 may be allowed an OD-SSB related interruptions on any active serving cell of up to a time period X when receiving the second indication, and the value of X may be determined based on any of the following options.

[0070] Alternatively or additionally, in order to determine the occurrence and the length of the allowed interruption, the terminal device 110 may determine the occurrence and the length of the allowed interruption based on whether an always-on SSB is present in the cell. For the case of no always-on SSB present, the cell interruption requirements follow the OD-SSB related interruptions, and interruptions are allowed for OD-SSB. For the case of always-on SSB present, the cell interruptions occurring from OD-SSB may be in addition to any interruptions caused by the always-on SSB.

[0071] If the always-on SSB is not present in the cell, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication. In other words, the terminal device 110 may be allowed interruptions based on the OD-SSB configuration.

[0072] In some embodiments, if the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption as a first length. This may include the case where the OD-SSB has been triggered earlier and receiving the OD-SSB indication / activation message (i.e., the second indication) for the SCell is not the initial time, or the case where OD-SSB has been triggered before for the SCell e.g. the OD-SSB has been activated and deactivated. Additionally, if the OD-SSB transmission has not been activated before receiving the second indication, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption as a second length longer than the first length. This may include the case where the OD-SSB has not been triggered earlier and receiving the OD-SSB indication / activation message (i.e., the second indication) for the SCell is the initial time, or the case where OD-SSB is triggered for the first time on the SCell after SCell addition and the terminal device 110 has not measured the SCell before.

[0073] As shown in Fig. 3, at time instance T1, the terminal device 110 receive a RRCReconfiguration message to add the SCell into the operation. Since OD-SSB has not been triggered on the SCell, no interruption is allowed when SCell is added. At time instance T2, the terminal device 110 receives an OD-SSB indication or activation command to inform the terminal device 110 that the transmission of OD-SSB on the SCell has been triggered or to be triggered. The terminal device 110 may send HARQ in response to the command and take some time to process the MAC CE i.e. Tmin. The beginning of the first slot containing the first OD-SSB burst may arrive no earlier than Tmin.

[0074] The terminal device 110 may be allowed an interruption#1 and at OD-SSB activation #1. After some time, OD-SSB Tx is stopped by OD-SSB deactivation (and an interruption #1’ is allowed) and again activated by OD-SSB activation #2 at time instance T3, and an interruption#2 is allowed at OD-SSB activation #2. After some time, SCell activation command is received and an interruption #3 is allowed. It can be seen that the interruption#2 is shorter than the interruption #1.

[0075] If the always-on SSB is present in the cell, the terminal device 110 may determine allowed interruptions based on the always-on SSB and / or the OD-SSB. For instance, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on a same carrier frequency. The carrier frequency may refer to a frequency layer, a frequency, or an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) or the frequency location of the center frequency of SSBs.

[0076] In some embodiments, if the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on different carrier frequencies, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on the time for switching band width part (BWP) . The interruption caused by OD-SSB reception may need to include at least a time period for BWP switching i.e. BWP switching time. At the OD-SSB activation, the terminal device 110 may switch the BWP according to a BWP including the OD-SSB. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may not switch BWP to a BWP including the OD-SSB, but instead cause interruptions for each used OD-SSB e.g. if UE supports the measurement on OD-SSB without BWP switching.

[0077] In addition, if the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on the same carrier frequency, the terminal device 110 may determine the interruption is allowed for both the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB.

[0078] As shown in Fig. 4, it is assumed that there is always-on SSBs or regular SSBs available in the SCell and OD-SSB is triggered by network when needed. At time instance T1, the terminal device 110 receives the RRCReconfiguration message to add the SCell into operation. The terminal device 110 is required to measure regular SSB based on the always-on SSB, hence interruption #0 applies at SCell addition.

[0079] At time instance T2, the terminal device 110 receives an OD-SSB indication or an activation command to inform the terminal device 110 that the transmission of OD-SSB on the SCell has been triggered or to be triggered. The terminal device 110 may send HARQ in response to the command and take some time (i.e., Tmin) to process the MAC CE. The beginning of the first slot containing the first OD-SSB burst may arrive no earlier than Tmin.

[0080] As the terminal device 110 may need to switch on the RF for measuring (e.g., for measuring the OD-SSB) , the RF returning or activation may be needed for monitoring the OD-SSB. If the OD-SSB is on the same frequency layer with regular SSB i.e. Case 2-2, an interruption is allowed at OD-SSB activation for switching on the RF. If the OD-SSB is not on the same frequency layer with regular SSB i.e. Case 2-1, in addition to switch on the RF, the terminal device 110 may need to perform BWP switching in order to measure OD-SSB. Hence an interruption #1 is allowed at OD-SSB activation where the interruption length can be the same as the interruption at active BWP switching plus margin (for switching on the RF) . The margin can also be zero.

[0081] Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the cell and at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed are within a same frequency band. The at least one cell is the victim cell i.e. the active serving cell being interrupted, and the at least one cell does not include the cell above. The at least one cell and the cell may be on the same band with the SCell where OD-SSB is triggered i.e., intra-band. The at least one cell and the cell may also be on different bands i.e., inter-band CA.

[0082] If the cell and the at least one cell are within the same frequency band, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on a length of OD-SSB burst time and a length of retuning time. If the cell and the at least one cell are on different frequency bands, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on the length of retuning time. In other words, the allowed interruption for different frequency bands is shorter than the interruption for the same frequency band.

[0083] On the other side, the network device 120 may also determine an allowed interruption based on the second indication in the same way. In some embodiments, in order to determine the allowed interruption, the network device 120 may determine a length of the allowed interruption, at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed, or a combination of above two items.

[0084] Alternatively or additionally, in order to determine the length of the allowed interruption, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether an always-on SSB is present in the cell.

[0085] If the always-on SSB is not present in the cell, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication. If the always-on SSB is present in the cell, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on a same carrier frequency.

[0086] In some embodiments, if the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption as a first length. Additionally, if the OD-SSB transmission has not been activated before receiving the second indication, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption as a second length longer than the first length.

[0087] In some embodiments, if the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on the same carrier frequency, the network device 120 may determine the interruption is allowed for both the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB.

[0088] In addition, if the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on different carrier frequencies, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on the time for switching band width part (BWP) .

[0089] Alternatively or additionally, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the cell and at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed are within a same frequency band.

[0090] If the cell and the at least one cell are within the same frequency band, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on a length of OD-SSB burst time and a length of retuning time. If the cell and the at least one cell are on different frequency bands, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on the length of retuning time.

[0091] Alternatively or additionally, the allowed interruption may be started upon receiving the second indication. For example, the interruption at OD-SSB indication / activation may started from the time instance when the terminal device 110 receives the OD-SSB indication / activation message.

[0092] Additionally, the allowed interruption may be started a period after receiving the second indication. The period is for processing, sending a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback for the second indication, and getting ready to receive or measure the OD-SSB. For example, the interruption at OD-SSB indication / activation may started no earlier than Tmin after receiving the OD-SSB indication / activation message. As shown in Fig. 3 or 4, Tmin is the time for processing and sending the HARQ ACK / NACK.

[0093] In general, when a cell is in OD-SSB operation, unnecessary interruption may be avoided at the cell addition, the cell activation and during measurements on a deactivated cell. The interruption requirement at OD-SSB activation enables network be aware of the potential interruption and may help network with the proper scheduling on the cell.

[0094] It is to be understood that example embodiments of the present disclosure are applicable to 6G as well. Example embodiments of the present disclosure may be captured in the 3GPP TS 38.133 clause 8, Rel-19 UEs and gNBs support the R19 OD-SSB operation can implement some embodiments of the present disclosure. For instance, TS 38.133 CR: 8.2.2.2.1 Interruptions at SCell addition / release When any number of SCells between one and 7 is added or released using the same  RRCConnectionReconfiguration message as defined in TS 38.331 [2] , the UE is allowed an interruption on any active serving cell during the RRC reconfiguration procedure as follows:  …. If an SCell is added or released and the Scell is configured with OD-SSB, the interruption  requirement at SCell addition / release will apply only if OD-SSB has been triggered. Or If an SCell is added or released and the Scell is configured with OD-SSB, the interruption requirement at SCell addition / release will not apply if OD-SSB is not triggered. 8.2.2.2. X Interruptions at OD-SSB activation / deactivation When OD-SSB is activated or deactivated in an SCell, the UE is allowed an interruption on  any active serving cell: - of up to X1 slot, if the OD-SSB has not been triggered on the SCell before the OD-SSB  activation, or - of up to X2 slot, if the OD-SSB has not been triggered on the SCell before the OD-SSB  activation. Where X1 and X2 are specified in Table 8.2.2.2. X-1 and 8.2.2.2. X-2 respectively. 8.2.2.2.3 Interruptions during measurements on deactivated SCC Interruptions on PCell or activated SCell (s) due to measurements when an SCell is  deactivated are allowed with up to 0.5%probability of missed ACK / NACK when the configured measCycleSCell [2] is 640 ms or longer. If an SCell is added or released and the Scell is configured with OD-SSB, the interruption  requirement during measurements on deactivated SCC will not apply if OD-SSB transmission is not triggered.

[0095] Fig. 5 illustrates an example process of proposed solution according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 500 may involve a UE 501, a PCell 502, and a Cell 1 503. It is understood that the process 500 can be considered as a more specific example of the process 200 in Fig. 2. Thus, the UE 501 of Fig. 5 may represent for example the terminal device 110 of Fig. 2, the PCell 502 of Fig. 5 may represent for example the network device 120 of Fig. 2 or a cell managed by the network device 120 of Fig. 2, e.g., the cell 101 of Fig. 1A, and the Cell 1 503 of Fig. 5 may represent for example the network device 120 of Fig. 2 or a cell managed by the network device 120 of Fig. 2, e.g., the cell 102 of Fig. 1A.

[0096] At 511, the UE 501 is in the connected mode with the PCell 502. The Cell1 503 is assumed to be able to support OD-SSB Tx. At 513, PCell 502 transmits a RRCReconfiguration message to the UE 501 to add Cell1 503 into CA operation (i.e. as an SCell) . The RRCReconfiguration message may comprise an indication that the cell is to be added, i.e., the first indication 230 described in Fig. 2. At 515, as the OD-SSB is not triggered yet, no interruption is allowed on the PCell 503. At 517, PCell 502 transmits an OD-SSB indication / activation message to the UE 501 to inform the UE 501 that the OD-SSB transmission on the Cell1 503 has been triggered or to be triggered. At 519, interruption is allowed at OD-SSB indication. At 520, the UE 501 determines the allowed interruption length based on 1) if the OD-SSB is in the same or different BWP as the always-on SSB or 2) if the OD-SSB has been triggered before receiving the SCell addition. At 521 and 523, the Cell 1 503 transmits the OD-SSB to UE 501. In some examples, always-on SSB is present in the Cell1 503, and the Cell1 503 operates in an active mode together with sending regular SSBs for synchronization purposes. In some other examples, always-on SSB is not present in the Cell1 503, and the regular SSB transmission / repetition is stopped, but instead OD-SSBs are sent depending on needs, e.g. on request of a UE for a connection, in case of adding a UE, etc. At 525, the PCell 502 transmits the OD-SSB deactivation message to the UE 501 to inform the UE 501 that the OD-SSB transmission on the Cell1 503 has been deactivated or to be deactivated. At 527, an interruption is allowed at the OD-SSB deactivation. In addition, the OD-SSB is assumed not transmitted afterwards.

[0097] Fig. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to Fig. 1A.

[0098] At block 610, the terminal device 110 establishes a connection via a primary cell towards a network device. At block 620, the terminal device 110 receives, from the network device, a first indication for performing a cell procedure on a cell, wherein the cell is operating with an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) , and no interruption due to a measurement is allowed until a second indication associated with an OD-SSB transmission of the cell is received.

[0099] In some embodiments, an interruption due to a measurement may be allowed after the second indication is received. In some embodiments, an interruption due to a measurement may include the interruption at receiving the first indication and / or the interruption at receiving the second indication.

[0100] In some embodiments, the first indication may indicate one of the following: the cell is to be added, the cell is to be released, the cell is to be activated, or the cell is to be deactivated.

[0101] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further receive, from the network device, the second indication. In some embodiments, the first indication and the second indication may be comprised in a same message.

[0102] In some embodiments, the second indication may indicate one of the following: OD-SSB transmission is to be activated on the cell, or OD-SSB transmission is to be deactivated on the cell.

[0103] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further determine an allowed interruption based on the second indication. In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the allowed interruption by: determining at least one of a length of the allowed interruption or at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed.

[0104] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption by: determining the length of the allowed interruption based on whether an always-on SSB is present in the cell.

[0105] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether an always-on SSB is present in the cell by: based on determining that the always-on SSB is not present in the cell, determining the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication; or based on determining that the always-on SSB is present in the cell, determining the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on a same carrier frequency.

[0106] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication by: based on determining that the OD-SSB transmission has been activated before receiving the second indication, determining the length of the allowed interruption as a first length, or based on determining that the OD-SSB transmission has not been activated before receiving the second indication, determining the length of the allowed interruption as a second length longer than the first length.

[0107] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on based on whether the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on the same carrier frequency by: based on determining that the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on the same carrier frequency, determining the interruption is allowed for both the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB.

[0108] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on the same carrier frequency by: based on determining that the always-on SSB and the OD-SSB are on different carrier frequencies, determining the length of the allowed interruption based on the time for switching band width part (BWP) .

[0109] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the length of the allowed interruption by: determining the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the cell and at least one cell on which the allowed interruption is allowed are within a same frequency band.

[0110] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further determine the length of the allowed interruption based on whether the cell and at least one cell are within the same frequency band by: based on determining that the cell and the at least one cell are within the same frequency band, determining the length of the allowed interruption based on a length of OD-SSB burst time and a length of retuning time, or based on determining that the cell and the at least one cell are on different frequency bands, determining the length of the allowed interruption based on the length of retuning time.

[0111] In some embodiments, the allowed interruption may be started upon receiving the second indication, or the allowed interruption may be started a period after receiving the second indication, wherein the period is for processing, sending a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback for the second indication, and getting ready to receive or measure the OD-SSB.

[0112] In some embodiments, the cell may comprise one of a secondary cell (SCell) , a primary secondary cell (PSCell) or a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) SCell, or the second indication may be received via a medium access control (MAC) control element (MAC CE) , a downlink control information (DCI) signaling or a radio resource control (RRC) signaling.

[0113] Fig. 7 shows a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a network device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the network device 120 with reference to Fig. 1A.

[0114] At block 710, the network device 120 establishes a connection via a primary cell with a terminal device. At block 720, the network device 120 transmits, to the terminal device, a first indication for performing a cell procedure on a cell, wherein the cell is operating with an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) , and no interruption due to a measurement is allowed until a second indication associated with an OD-SSB transmission of the cell is received by the terminal device.

[0115] In some embodiments, an interruption due to a measurement may be allowed after the second indication is received by the terminal device. In some embodiments, an interruption due to a measurement may include the interruption at receiving the first indication and / or the interruption at the second indication is received by the terminal device.

[0116] In some embodiments, the first indication may indicate one of the following: the cell is to be added for the terminal device, the cell is to be released, the cell is to be activated, or the cell is to be deactivated.

[0117] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may further transmit, to the terminal device, the second indication. In some embodiments, the first indication and the second indication may be comprised in a same message.

[0118] In some embodiments, the second indication may indicate one of the following: OD-SSB transmission is to be activated on the cell, or OD-SSB transmission is to be deactivated on the cell.

[0119] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may further determine an allowed interruption based on the second indication. In some embodiments, the network device 120 may determine the allowed interruption by: determine at least one of a length of the allowed interruption or at least one cell on which the interruption is allowed.

[0120] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may determine the length of the allowed interruption by: determining the length of the allowed interruption based on whether an always-on SSB is present in the cell.

[0173] Step 2: If SN decided to accept the request, it sends SgNB Addition Request Acknowledge to the MN and may perform at least one of the following steps: Allocate the necessary radio resources transport network resources decides Pscell and other SCG Scells and provide the new SCG radio resource  configuration to MN In case of bearer options that requires X2-U between MN and SN provides X2-U TNS address information In case of SCG radio resources being requested provide SCG radio resource configuration

[0174] In case SN is or is about to operate in SD-SSB mode, the SN may include the corresponding OD-SSB config into the SgNB Addition Request Acknowledge message. Steps 1 and 2 may be performed between steps 511 and 513 of Fig. 5.

[0175] OD-SSB config may include one or more of SSB transmission pattern, SSB bitmap, presence, periodicity, and may include one or more of the following parameters:

[0176] Depending on network requirement, the SN can selectively transmit only a few SSB and inform UE of which SSBs are transmitted and which are not transmitted. This transmission pattern is informed via a RRC IE (Information Element) called ssb-PositionInBurst.

[0177] The information about the activation of OD-SSB transmission may be transmitted in steps 2 and 3 messages, or e.g. in a step after step 5, but before step 6-0 to enable UE SN Cell detection. Mapped to Fig. 5 the OD_SSB activation may be included in step 513 message, or send separately thereafter, e.g. in step 517 (after a respective OD_SSB activation has been received from Cell1) .

[0178] Step 3: If NR gNB accept the SN addition request and provides all the necessary information to LTE eNB, LTE eNB generate RRC Connection Reconfiguration message carrying all the necessary information and send it to UE. This message carries NR RRC Connection Configuration in it so that UE can figure out the necessary configuration information for NR gNB.

[0179] Step 3 may correspond to step 513 of Fig. 5.

[0180] Step 4: After UE received RRCConnectionReconfiguration, it checks if all the configurations in the message is doable in UE side, it sends RRCConnectionReconfigurationComplete message. This message includes NR RRC Response as well.

[0181] Step 4 may be included between steps 513 and 517 of Fig. 5.

[0182] Step 5: Once MN (LTE eNB) received RRCConnectionReconfigurationComplete from UE, the MN informs SN (NR gNB) that UE has completed the reconfiguration procedure.

[0183] Step 5 may be included between steps 513 and 517 of Fig. 5.

[0184] Step 6-0: Based on the information contained in NR RRCConnectionConfiguration within RRC Connection Reconfiguration message or in a separate OD-SSB activation message as illustrated above, UE detects SSBlock (PSS, SSS and PBCH) of NR gNB.

[0185] Step 6: Once UE successfully detects OD-SSB (e.g. including PSS, SSH, and / or PBCH of NR gNB) , it performs RACH procedure to PSCell of the SN (NR gNB) . UE acquires information required for RACH procedure from RRC Connection Reconfiguration message.

[0186] Generally, various embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented in hardware or special purpose circuits, software, logic or any combination thereof. Some aspects may be implemented in hardware, while other aspects may be implemented in firmware or software which may be executed by a controller, microprocessor or other computing device. While various aspects of embodiments of the present disclosure are illustrated and described as block diagrams, flowcharts, or using some other pictorial representations, it is to be understood that the block, apparatus, system, technique or method described herein may be implemented in, as non-limiting examples, hardware, software, firmware, special purpose circuits or logic, general purpose hardware or controller or other computing devices, or some combination thereof.

[0187] Example embodiments of the present disclosure also provides at least one computer program product tangibly stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium. The computer program product includes computer-executable instructions, such as those included in program modules, being executed in a device on a target real or virtual processor, to carry out the methods 600 and 700 as described above with reference to Figs. 6-7. Generally, program modules include routines, programs, libraries, objects, classes, components, data structures, or the like that perform particular tasks or implement particular abstract data types. The functionality of the program modules may be combined or split between program modules as desired in various embodiments. Machine-executable instructions for program modules may be executed within a local or distributed device. In a distributed device, program modules may be located in both local and remote storage media.
