[0039] For network energy saving, an objective has been proposed to specify procedures and signaling to support OD-SSB Secondary Cell (SCell) operation. Specifically, procedures and signalling method (s) are to be specified to support on-demand SSB SCell operation for UEs in connected mode configured with Carrier Aggregation (CA) , for both intra-band and inter-band CA.

[0040] There are different on-demand SSB cases. For example, Case 1 assumes that there is no regular SSB or always-on SSB transmission in the SCell and only on-demand SSBs may be triggered from time to time, while Case 2 assumes that there is always-on SSB transmission in the SCell and on-demand SSBs may be triggered or activated additionally.

[0041] FIG. 2 shows an example of OD-SSB transmission for SCell activation for different on-demand SSB cases (Case 1 and Case 2) . The SCell configuration may be configured to the UE at time point T1. The SCell activation signaling may be received by the UE at time point T2. At time point T3, the UE may report CSI measurement to the NW indicating the completion of SCell activation.

[0042] As shown in FIG. 2, in Case 1, there are only OD-SSBs without any always-ON SSB. In Case 2, besides always-on SSB transmissions, the OD-SSB transmission may also be triggered by network. For Case 1, once on-demand SSB is triggered, its transmission is in a periodic manner.

[0043] Different scenarios are identified with respect to different on-demand SSB cases. As shown in FIG. 2, Scenario #2A refers to the case where OD-SSB is triggered when UE receives SCell activation command, Scenario #3A refers to the case where OD-SSB is triggered after UE receives SCell activation command until SCell activation is completed while Scenario #3B refers to the case where OD-SSB is triggered when SCell activation is completed and SCell is activated or after SCell activation is completed and SCell is activated.

[0044] The OD-SSB based operation has been discussed starting from the agreed cases and scenarios (as mentioned above) . In particular, the OD-SSB based measurement requirement on the deactivated SCell needs to be defined. For example, it is not clear how the UE performs the measurement on the deactivated SCell when both always-on SSB and OD-SSB are being transmitted i.e., Case 2.

[0045] As described above, unlike in Case 1, in Case 2 it is assumed that SCell is transmitting always-on SSBs, and OD-SSB transmission may also be triggered by the network depending on the requirement. Hence, both always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs are being transmitted in the SCell.

[0046] However, when OD-SSB is triggered on a deactivated SCell, it is not clear and not yet specified how a UE would perform the measurements while both OD-SSB and always-on SSBs are present. Thus, it should be investigated, when the OD-SSB transmission has triggered, whether to measure always-on SSBs together with the OD-SSBs or whether to measure only the OD-SSBs or always-on SSB in the deactivated cell.

[0047] FIG. 3 shows different scenarios where always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs are transmitted together by the SCell in the same frequency or carrier frequency, (i.e. with the same center frequency of SSBs) or in different frequency.

[0048] In some cases, always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs may be transmitted with the same time offset e.g. the time offset to the slot boundary, so that the SSB samples of one type of SSB e.g. OD-SSB may completely overlap with the other type of SSB e.g. always-on SSB e.g., Case 2-1 in FIG. 3. Also, there in some cases the time offset of the always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions may be different, e.g. case 2-2 in FIG. 3. Case 2-3 in FIG. 3 refers to the scenario where OD-SSBs and always-on SSBs are transmitted in two different frequencies. Measuring the SSBs of deactivated SCell in these cases may be considered.

[0049] Considering that OD-SSB may or may not in synchronization raster, this may lead to different scenarios as discussed above (in FIG. 3) where OD-SSBs and always-on SSBs may be on the same frequency, i.e., in Case 2-1. Case 2-2, or on different frequencies, i.e., Case 2-3 (as shown FIG. 3) . These frequency layers may or may not be the synchronization raster.

[0050] The case where the always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs are transmitted in different frequencies, as shown in Case 2-3 in FIG. 3 may also be considered. In this case as well, it is not clear how to do the SSB measurements in the deactivated SCell, i.e., to measure both always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs together or only OD-SSBs.

[0051] In accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution of cell measurement deactivation. In this solution, at least one SSB is received by the first apparatus 110 from a cell. If an OD-SSB activation signaling is received, the first apparatus 110 determines whether to perform or not to perform a measurement of an OD-SSB received from the cell based on a measurement status of the at least one SSB and / or a relationship between a first frequency used for transmitting the OD-SSB and a second frequency used for transmitting the at least one SSB.

[0052] In this way, the measurements on deactivated SCell can be minimized, and meanwhile capable UEs can be allowed to do faster SCell activation than less capable UEs.

[0053] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0054] Reference is now made to FIG. 4A, which shows a signaling chart 400A for communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 4A, the signaling chart 400A involves a first apparatus 110, a cell 102 which may be considered as a PCell and a further cell 104 which may be considered as a SCell or a PSCell. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling chart 400A.

[0055] In a case where there is always-on SSB transmission in the SCell and on-demand SSBs may be triggered additionally, as shown in FIG. 4A, at least one SSB may be received (402) by the first apparatus 110 from a device managing the further cell 104 (e.g., a SCell or a PSCell) . It is to be understood that one or more SSBs may be transmitted from the device managing the further cell 104 to the first apparatus periodically, as shown in FIG. 2, Case 2. The cell 104 in this case is a deactivated cell. Hereinafter the at least one SSB may also be referred to as at least one always-ON SSB.

[0056] When the SCell is in deactivated state, the first apparatus 110 may be required to measure the SSBs (i.e., the always-on SSBs) before OD-SSB is triggered. The first apparatus 110 may keep (404) on measuring always-on SSBs until OD-SSBs are triggered in the further cell 104.

[0057] A signaling of the OD-SSB activation for the cell 106 may be received by the first apparatus 110 from the cell 102 (e.g., a PCell or PSCell) . For example, a device managing the cell 102 may transmit (406) an OD-SSB activation signaling to the first apparatus 110. As an example, the OD-SSB activation signaling may be an OD-SSB activation command or RRC reconfiguration message indicating the activation of OD-SSB.

[0058] After receiving the activation of the OD-SSB, the first apparatus 110 may start receiving OD-SSB from further cell 104. For example, the device managing the further cell 104 may transmit (408) an OD-SSB to the first apparatus 110. It is to be understood that the OD-SSB may also be transmitted periodically if being triggered. The periodicity of the at least one SSB transmission may be different from the periodicity of the transmission of the OD-SSB.

[0059] Upon receiving OD-SSB activation signaling, the first apparatus 110 may determine (410) whether the measurement on OD-SSB is required.

[0060] As mentioned above, there are two different scenarios for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions, i.e., the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are the same or different. It is to be understood that the frequency used for a transmission used herein may also refer to a frequency range. The frequency used herein may also be referred to as a frequency layer, a bandwidth part, or a carrier frequency.

[0061] Considering the first apparatus 110 has measured the always-ON SSB before a trigger of the OD-SSB, the first apparatus 110 may determine whether the measurement on OD-SSB is required considering the measurement state of the always-ON SSB and whether the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are the same or different.

[0062] FIG. 4B illustrates a flowchart of a process 400B for determining measurement on OD-SSB in a case where the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are the same and FIG. 4C illustrates a flowchart of a process 400C for determining measurement on OD-SSB in a case where the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are different. The process for determining whether the measurement on OD-SSB is required will be described with reference to FIG. 4B and FIG. 4C.

[0063] In a case where the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are the same, as shown in FIG. 4B, at block 415, the first apparatus 110 may measure the at least one always-on SSB from the SCell. At Block 420, upon the OD-SSB is triggered, as an option, at block 425, if the first apparatus 110 has sent a measurement report of the measurement (s) on the at least one SSB (i.e., the always-ON SSB or OD-SSB on the same frequency) , at block 445, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required. For example, if the measurement report based on the always-ON SSB had been sent by the first apparatus 110 within a certain time period before receiving OD-SSB activation signaling, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required. In another example, if OD-SSB has been triggered on the same frequency before OD-SSB is triggered at block 420 and the measurement report based on the OD-SSB had been sent by the first apparatus 110 within a certain time period before receiving OD-SSB activation signaling, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required.

[0064] Because if the measurement report of the measurement (s) on the at least one SSB from the SCell (e.g., further cell 104) has been sent from first apparatus 110 to the network, the SCell can be considered as being known. Thus, if the SCell is known for the first apparatus, the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required. That is, the first apparatus 110 may not need to measure OD-SSB in deactivated state if the SCell is known. Without further measurement on OD-SSB, faster SCell activation can be achieved.

[0065] As another option, at block 430, if the first apparatus 110 has measured the at least one always-ON SSB for a certain time period, at block 445, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required. For example, the certain time period may be predefined or based on the network indication, e.g., obtained from a configuration signaling received from the cell 102 (e.g., the PCell) . As an example, the certain time period may be predefined as the time for a cell detection, the time for identifying a new cell or a measurement period. More specifically, the certain time period may comprise a time for a cell detection, a time for identifying cell, a measurement period for intra-frequency measurement or a measurement period for intra-frequency measurement on a deactivated cell.

[0066] It is also possible that, at block 435, if the measurement result of the at least one always-ON SSB is above a threshold, at block 445, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required.

[0067] As another option, at block 440, if the OD-SSB is QCL-ed with the at least one always-ON SSB, at block 445, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required. The OD-SSB and the at least one always-ON SSB are QCL-ed means that these two types of SSBs are transmitted in the same direction or in the same beam or with the same TCI state. Thus, no need to measure the OD-SSB if the first apparatus 110 has already measured the at least one always-ON SSB.

[0068] In a case where the frequency used for always-on SSB and OD-SSB transmissions are different, as shown in FIG. 4C, at block 450, the first apparatus 110 may measure the at least one always-on SSB from the SCell. Upon the OD-SSB is triggered at Block 455, at block 460, the first apparatus 110 determines whether the measurement on OD-SSB and the always-ON SSB are supported by the first apparatus 110 simultaneously. Some UEs depending on their capability can measure always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs transmitted in different frequencies (or different BWPs) simultaneously. However, some other UEs may not have this capability. If the first apparatus 110 has this capability, the first apparatus 110 may, at block 465, perform the measurement on always-on SSBs and OD-SSBs simultaneously.

[0069] If the first apparatus 110 does not have this capability, as an option, if the first apparatus 110, at block 470, determines a frequence separation between a frequency used for always-ON SSB transmission and a further frequency used for an OD-SSB transmission does not exceed a threshold, at block 490, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required.

[0070] As another option, if the first apparatus 110, at block 475, determines that a quality of the at least one SSB is above a threshold level or a further quality of the OD-SSB is lower than the threshold level, at block 490, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required.

[0071] The quality of the signal mentioned herein may be referred to a RSRP level, RSRQ or a SINR level, etc. For example, if the RSRP levels of OD-SSBs are less than a threshold or if the RSRP levels of the always-on SSBs are above a threshold, the OD-SSB may not need to be measured.

[0072] Alternatively, the quality check condition may be combined along with the frequency separation condition. That is, if a frequence separation between a frequency used for always-ON SSB transmission and a further frequency used for an OD-SSB transmission does not exceed a threshold, the first apparatus 110 may further check whether the quality of the at least one SSB is above the threshold level or the further quality of the OD-SSB is lower than the threshold level.

[0073] As another example, if the first apparatus 110, at block 480, determines that the at least one SSB comprises a cell-defined (CD) SSB and the OD-SSB belongs to non-cell-defined (NCD) SSB, at block 490, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required.

[0074] As another example, if the first apparatus 110, at block 485, determines that a difference between an SSB transmission periodicity and an OD-SSB transmission periodicity is within a threshold difference, at block 490, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the measurement on OD-SSB is not required. For example, if always-on SSB and OD-SSB periodicities are not largely different to each other or if the difference between these two periodicities is less than a threshold, the OD-SSB may not need to be measured.

[0075] Alternatively, based on the periodicity of the SSB transmissions, the first apparatus 110 may decide which type of SSBs to be measured. For example, if the OD-SSB transmission periodicity is lower than that of the always-on SSBs, the first apparatus 110 may measure only the OD-SSBs and ignore always-on SSBs until OD-SSB transmission burst is over.

[0076] FIG. 5 shows a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at an apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0077] At block 510, the first apparatus 110 receives at least one synchronization signal block, SSB from a cell of the apparatus.

[0078] At block 520, in accordance with a determination that an on-demand SSB, OD-SSB activation signaling for the cell is received, At block 530, the first apparatus 110 determines to perform or not to perform a measurement of an OD-SSB received from the cell based on at least one of: a measurement status of at least one SSB from the cell, or a relationship between a first frequency used for transmitting the OD-SSB and a second frequency used for transmitting the at least one SSB.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is the same as the second frequency and a measurement report associated with the at least one SSB has been reported to a network node, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the measurement report associated with the at least one SSB has been reported to the cell within a certain time period before receiving the OD-SSB activation signaling.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is the same as the second frequency and the at least one SSB has been measured by the apparatus for a certain time period, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0082] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the cell is known, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0083] In some example embodiments, the certain time period is predefined as at least one of the following: a time for a cell detection, a time for identifying a cell, a measurement period for intra-frequency measurement, or a measurement period for intra-frequency measurement on a deactivated cell.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is the same as the second frequency and a measurement result associated with the at least one SSB is above a threshold, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is the same as the second frequency and the OD-SSB is quasi-co-located with the at least one SSB that is measured by the apparatus, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is different with the second frequency and a frequency separation between the first and the second frequency is within a threshold, determining respective qualities of the OD-SSB and the OD-SSB; and in accordance with a determination that a quality of the at least one SSB is above a threshold level or a further quality of the OD-SSB is lower than the threshold level, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the at least one SSB comprises a cell-defined SSB and the OD-SSB belongs to non-cell-defined SSB, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the first frequency is different with the second frequency and a difference between an SSB transmission periodicity and an OD-SSB transmission periodicity is within a threshold difference, determining that the measurement on the OD-SSB is not required.

[0089] In some example embodiments, the method 500 further comprises: in accordance with a determination that the at least one SSB comprises a cell-defined SSB and an OD-SSB transmission periodicity is shorter than an SSB transmission periodicity, performing the measurement on at least one OD-SSB until an end of an OD-SSB transmission burst.
