AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing vehicle driver line-of-sight estimation systems face accuracy limitations due to camera installation constraints, leading to difficulties in geometrically estimating visual recognition targets accurately.

Method used

A visual recognition target estimation device that utilizes a camera to acquire face orientation and line-of-sight angles, calculates offset angles, and determines sighting destinations using probability distributions based on face and gaze angles, even with limited camera accuracy.

Benefits of technology

Enables high-accuracy estimation of visual recognition targets by combining face orientation and line-of-sight angles, improving estimation robustness and accuracy despite camera limitations.

Abstract

A gaze target estimation device for estimating a gaze target of a driver of a vehicle on the basis of face image data obtained by photographing the face of the driver with a camera, the gaze target estimation device comprising: an angle acquisition unit for acquiring, on the basis of the face image data of the driver, a face orientation angle of the driver with reference to a face orientation when the driver faces the camera or a line-of-sight angle with reference to a line of sight when the driver faces the camera; an offset calculation unit for calculating, as an offset angle on the basis of the face orientation angle or the line-of-sight angle, an angle formed by the face orientation when the driver faces the camera and the front direction of the driver's seat or an angle formed by the line-of-sight direction when the driver faces the camera and the front direction of the driver's seat; and a determiner generation unit for generating, on the basis of the offset angle, a determiner to be used for determining the gaze target of the driver on the basis of the face orientation angle or the line-of-sight angle.
