Abstract

Systems and methods for intraoperative blood loss quantification in surgical sponges are provided. A system includes: a surgical sponge receptacle including: a housing including a lid including an opening receiving a used surgical sponge, a container in the housing, a tray between the opening and the container, and pivotable between: a measurement position, and a discharge position: a camera capturing, in real time, an image of the used surgical sponge, a mass sensor outputting a signal for a mass of the used surgical sponge, one or more motors pivoting the tray between the measurement position and the discharge position, and a controller operatively coupled to the camera, the mass sensor, and the one or more motors, and configured to: obtain the image and the mass signal, determine a mass of the used surgical sponge from the mass signal, and command the one or more motors to pivot the tray.
