[0001] The present disclosure relates to devices, methods, and kits for applying compositions to hair, including hair colouring, hair highlighting, and hair lowlighting compositions.BACKGROUND
[0002] Hair enhancements, particularly hair colouring and highlighting / lowlighting, are extremely time consuming and complicated, and require the services of trained colourists. A considerable amount of lost time and inefficiency at salons arises from the need to regularly prepare foils for the later use in salon client’s hair. In addition, the foil wrapping process is very involved with stylist / colourist having to hold their fingers and foils in precise orientations to section and secure the hair for colouring to achieve the desired colouring result. Delays caused during colouring and highlighting / lowlighting cause downstream delays in haircuts, straightening, and styling. All of this, in turn, reduces the throughput / volume of customers that salons can manage, and substantially increases costs for both salons and customers alike.
[0003] Additionally, hair foils and their application lead to inconsistent results. The top edges of foils are straight and unable to flex. This linearity and inflexibility produce irregular and inferior treatment. Because the top edge of the foil is rigid and straight, it cannot follow the contour of the scalp. Only the centre point of the top edge actually contacts the scalp when the foil is put into place. To either side of this centre point, the top edge extends away from the scalp. This means that a composition cannot be applied in even amounts to the section of hair in the foil. The hairs positioned precisely at the centre point of the foil can be treated all the way up to the scalp, given that the centre point contacts the scalp. The hairs positioned at any other position on the foil (to the left or right of the centre point) cannot be treated all the way up to the scalp. In addition, the progressive application of foils and application of the colour composition means that earlier applied foils have an extended exposure to the composition as compared to later applied foils. In the short term, this produces variations incolouring / highlighting / lowlighting (e.g., blotching) over the head of hair. In the long term, this causes damage in certain regions of the hair, i.e., regions that are regularly over exposed.
[0004] This increased exposure increases the potential for skin sensitivities such as dermatitis, and for serious allergic conditions such as anaphylaxis. It is noted that most hair colour and highlighting / lowlighting compositions contain known sensitisers such as 1,4-phenylenediamine (PPD) and 1,4 -toluenediamine (PTD). There is also increased risk of toxicity and illness from chemical exposure. Many hair colourants and highlighting / lowlighting treatments use chemicals, such as peroxide, alkalizers, ammonia, metal oxides including titanium dioxide and iron oxide, and a variety of other agents. Many of these chemical agents are toxic and some are classified as carcinogens. Because foil based application methods are inherently imprecise (lack of contouring, lack of uniformity, etc, as noted), this means that the noted chemical agents can contact the scalp, forehead, neck, ears, and other parts of the head each time that treatment is carried out.
[0005] From the customer’s standpoint, foils are inconvenient, awkward, and dated. The appearance of foils in one’s hair is highly unattractive. Foils often result in “blotches” of colour due to their imprecision (lack of contouring, lack of uniformity, etc, as noted). For the same reasons, foils can result in skin irritation. These effects are concerning to the customer. Moreover, there is a considerable and negative impact on the environment, given the single use nature of the foils, how the foils are made, and the source of materials used for foils. Foils are produced in an energy intensive process from non-sustainable materials. The single use nature of foils means that there is substantial waste. At the end of each hair treatment, the large pile of foils is discarded. This is problematic given the increasing focus of salons and colour manufacturers to join sustainability programmes, and the increasing awareness of customers as to environmental and sustainability issues.
[0006] Therefore, there is an ongoing need in the field for alternative means for applying colouring, highlighting, lowlighting, and other compositions to the hair.Particularly noted are means that provide improvements in one or more of: efficiency, accuracy, customer satisfaction, customer well being, and environmental considerations.SUMMARY
[0007] In one aspect, the disclosure encompasses a device for applying a hair composition to hair of a subject, the device comprising: at least one flap component, wherein the at least one flap component comprises at least one thermoplastic elastomer material, wherein the at least one flap component facilitates contact between the section of hair and the composition, and helps to protect the scalp and surrounding hair from contact with the composition, and wherein each flap component is adapted to fold or roll onto itself or to engage with a further flap component to provide paired flap components.

[0376] Manufacture: For manufacture of the flap component, styrene-ethylene- butylene-styrene (SEBS) film was obtained as styrene block copolymer thermoplastic elastomer, extruded and slit. The SEBS film was translucent, elastic, and tacky, with a smooth finish. The film was provided in sheets 24 cm wide and 50 meters long, with 0.2mm thickness. These sheets were cut to an essentially rectangular shape, approximately 9 cm wide and 27 cm long.
[0377] Methodology: Nineteen stylists trialled the device (HYLO). Fourteen of these used the product regularly enough to understand the HYLO product and how it worked. To start, each stylist was given a short training session by an educator to overview functional and practical elements of the HYLO product.
[0378] Over the course of the trials, the HYLOs were used on a range of hair types (blonde, dark, thin, thick, small / large heads) and for achieving a range of treatments (colour, retouch, root to tip). Full head and half head colourings were performed. A qualitative researcher was engaged to prepare questions for the stylists and to observe the stylists while they worked. Eight stylists were observed over a three hour period while working on 4 clients, and were afterwards asked questions.
[0379] Results: The HYLO product appealed to the stylists questioned. Unprompted, three of the stylists said that they would switch to using the HYLO in its current form if it were commercially available. One of the stylists who loved the product and was particularly creative with it, asked to continue to use the product after the trial.

[0381] Aim: To assess the speed and consistency of lifting colour from hair using the HYLO product.
[0382] Background: During the first testing of the HYLO product (Example 1), more than half of the stylists commented that the HYLO product was lifting colour faster than foil. This was particularly noted when the station (where foil was being applied) was adjacent to the air conditioning unit. One stylist commented that foil can take up to 30 minutes longer to lift when the client is situated at that station. The educator said that the HYLO lifted colour faster than foil in a normal environment even when the client was under the air conditioning unit.
[0383] In addition to this, several stylists commented that they were getting a higher quality colour result with the HYLO product than they had with foil. Words used by stylists to describe this quality were “consistent” and “smooth”. One commented that he was getting a colour result like he would expect the scientists in Germany would be getting when they are testing products in a lab.
[0384] Methodology: On a clean table, plastic mats were laid out. Eight mats included pre-cut foil (EZ classics). One mat included a HYLO device. Each of the eight mats with foil included a card stating the number of minutes difference between opening the HYLO after processing and opening the foil after processing (the HYLO being opened before the foil). This included time differences of: 0 minutes, 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 6 minutes, 8 minutes, 10 minutes, 12 minutes, and 14 minutes. The precut foils and HYLO were approximately the same size and weight.
[0385] Prior to the experiment, the air conditioning was used to lower the temperature of the room to approximate the temperature of the average salon, i.e., between 22°C and 24°C. The room temperature achieved was 25 °C. The ducts for the air conditioning were located well away from the colouring station. To assess the results, a senior colouring educator / experienced colourist was employed. Oro Therapy Gold Activator 6% was utilised as the developer. De Lorenzo NOVALITE dust free powder lightener was utilised as the bleaching agent. These were standard salon products and the components were mixed as would normally be mixed in the salon, i.e., two parts developer to one part lightener. The lightener was allowed to remain active until it was washed off.
[0386] The hair samples were cut from a mannequin with straight human hair. The educator cut sections of hair that were all the same starting colour. Approximately the same number of stands of hair were cut. A bundle was sellotaped to each piece of the pre-cut foil and to the HYLO. The lightener and developer were mixed thoroughly and then applied to the hair on the HYLO and to the hair on each foil. The hair samples were folded into the HYLO or into the foils in a methodical swift sequence. The same amount of the developer / lighter mixture was applied to each of the cut sections of hair. The foil was folded in half in accordance with standard techniques for hair on the crownof the head. Each foil was patted down to ensure good contact between the hair and the mixture. After 31 minutes of processing the “same time” foil and HYLO were opened (0 minutes difference), and the mixture was washed off the hair using warm water. The next foil was opened at 33 minutes (2 minutes difference) and then washed. This procedure was repeated until the last foil was opened at 45 minutes (14 minutes difference). The hair samples were fully dried.
[0387] Results: The educator noticed the HYLO sample processing quicker than would be normally expected. Once washed and dried, the educator assessed the HYLO sample in comparison to the foil samples and noted significant evenness and consistency from the HYLO: “It has depth and consistency from start of application to the end / consistency of shade”. It was assessed to be a quality result. The educator further noted that the foil required 8 to 12 minutes longer (39 to 43 minutes of processing) to achieve the same colouring result as the HYLO (31 minutes of processing). See Figure 20. When the foil samples with shorter processing were assessed (31 to 37 minutes), these had not lifted to the same extent as the HYLO (31 minutes).
[0388] The aim is to repeat these experiments with test subjects. It is noted that the speed and consistency of processing is enhanced when performed on a human head. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that the heat of the client’s head warms up the hair composition and causes it to react faster. WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A device for applying a hair composition to hair of a subject, the device comprising: at least one flap component, wherein the at least one flap component comprises at least one thermoplastic elastomer material, wherein the at least one flap component facilitates contact between the section of hair and the composition, and helps to protect the scalp and surrounding hair from contact with the composition, and wherein each flap component is adapted to fold or roll onto itself or to engage with a further flap component to provide paired flap components.
2. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: elastomeric alloys, polyamides, copolyesters, olefins, polyolefin blends, block copolymers, thermoplastic nanofibers, and thermoplastic styrenic elastomers.
3. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene (SEPS), styrene block copolymer (SBC), styrene -butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene- styrene (SIS), and any combination thereof.
4. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is SEBS.

14. A kit for applying a hair composition to hair of a subject, the kit comprising:(a) at least one flap component according to a preceding aspect, wherein the at least one flap component comprises at least one thermoplastic elastomer material, and(b) optionally, instructions for use.
15. The kit of claim 14, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: elastomeric alloys, polyamides, copolyesters, olefins, polyolefin blends, block copolymers, thermoplastic nanofibers, and thermoplastic styrenic elastomers.

The kit of claim 14, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene (SEPS), styrene block copolymer (SBC), styrene -butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene- styrene (SIS), and any combination thereof.
17. The kit of claim 14, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is SEBS.

A method of preparing a device for applying a hair composition to hair of a subject, the method comprising: obtaining at least one flap component, wherein the at least one flap component comprises at least one thermoplastic elastomer material,wherein the at least one flap component facilitates contact between the section of hair and the composition, and helps to protect the scalp and surrounding hair from contact with the composition, and wherein each flap component is adapted to fold or roll onto itself or to engage with a further flap component to provide paired flap components.
32. The method of claim 31, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: elastomeric alloys, polyamides, copolyesters, olefins, polyolefin blends, block copolymers, thermoplastic nanofibers, and thermoplastic styrenic elastomers.

The method of claim 31, wherein the at least one thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene (SEPS), styrene block copolymer (SBC), styrene -butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene- styrene (SIS), and any combination thereof.

A method of utilising a device, the device comprising at least one flap component, wherein the at least one flap component comprises at least one thermoplastic elastomer material, wherein the at least one flap component facilitates contact between the section of hair and the composition, and helps to protect the scalp and surrounding hair from contact with the composition, and wherein each flap component is adapted to fold or roll onto itself or to engage with a further flap component to provide paired flap components, the method comprising:(i) providing the flap component,(ii) positioning the section of hair onto the flap component;(iii) applying a hair composition to the section of hair;(iv) folding or rolling the flap component over the section of hair, or adding a further flap component over the section of hair to provide paired flap components, and allowing treatment for a necessary duration.
45. The method of claim 44, wherein the thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: elastomeric alloys, polyamides, copolyesters, olefins, polyolefin blends, block copolymers, thermoplastic nanofibers, and thermoplastic styrenic elastomers.

The method of claim 44, wherein the thermoplastic elastomer material is selected from the group consisting of: styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS), acrylonitrile - butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene (SEPS), styrene blockcopolymer (SBC), styrene-butadiene- styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), and any combination thereof.

54. The method of any one of claims 44 to 53, which further includes one or more of: prior to (ii), engaging a flap component with a section of hair of the subject; or prior to (iii), tensioning the section of hair onto the flap component.

The method of any one of claims 44 to 54, which further includes one or more of: the applying of the hair composition is via a composition supply in the flap component; the applying of the hair composition is via a reservoir provided with the flap component; or the applying of the hair composition is via a pouch or chamber provided with the flap component.
56. The method of any one of claims 44 to 55, wherein: the applying of the hair composition is facilitated by a tool; and / or the applying of the hair composition is facilitated by a comb, brush, pick, applicator, or any combination thereof.
57. The method of any one of claims 44 to 56, wherein: the necessary duration is determined by inspection of the section of hair by a user; orthe necessary duration is communicated by one or more sensing means on the device to one or more electronic devices.
58. The method of any one of claims 44 to 57, wherein the one or more electronic devices are selected from the group consisting of: smart watches, mobile phones, tablets, personal computers, and any combination thereof.
59. The method of any one of claims 44 to 58, wherein steps (i)-(iv) are repeated for additional sections of hair until all desired sections of hair are treated.
60. The method of any one of claims 44 to 59, wherein the device is removed and cleaned following treatment.
