Abstract

A method for synthesizing chalcogenide glass having improved IR transmittance without the need for purification of raw materials before melting is disclosed. The method comprises melting raw materials and an additive in an atmosphere controlled to mitigate reaction of the raw materials with oxygen in the atmosphere. The raw materials comprises at least one chalcogen element selected from the group consisting of sulfur, selenium, and tellurium. The additive is configured to chemically bind to oxygen during the melting. The additive is provided in an amount of less than 150 ppm.
