Abstract

Scalable bioreactor platforms and methods of scaling cell cultures are provided that are scalability in bioreactor platform, process, and performance. The bioreactor platform can include a first bioreactor system having a first bioreactor containing a first fixed-bed substrate for adhering cells thereto, and a second bioreactor system having a second bioreactor containing a second fixed-bed substrate for adhering cells thereto. The first fixed-bed substrate has a first surface area, and the second fixed-bed substrate has a second surface area that is larger than the first surface. One or more controllers operating the first and second bioreactor systems control a process variable in the second bioreactor system at a value that is determined by multiplying the value used in the first bioreactor system by a scaling factor N, where N is equal to the second surface area (m2) divided by the first surface area (m2).
