In alternative embodiments, provided are chimeric products of manufacture and methods for delivering a proteinaceous cargo, a polypeptide or peptide, or a compound to or into a cell, for example, a eukaryotic cell such as a mammalian or a human cell, or to a plant cell, or to an individual in need thereof. In alternative embodiments, provided are molecular syringes, which can be termed Contractile Injection Systems (CIS) or Metamorphosis Associated Contractile structures (MACs), which can target animal (eukaryotic) cells, including human cells.
