Description

METHOD, SYSTEM AND RELATED APPARATUSES FOR WIRELESS SENSING IN COMMUNICATION NETWORKSCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 727,021, filed on December 02, 2024. The disclosure of the above patent application is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure relates to the field of communication technologies, and in particular, to a communication method, system and related apparatuses for wireless sensing in communication networks.BACKGROUND

[0003] Future generation wireless communication systems may be expected to rely on an analysis of transmissions, reflections, and scattering of wireless sensing signals and utilizing sensing assistance information (e.g., an environmental map, a user equipment (UE) position or velocity information) to provide network-wide sensing capabilities. A wireless sensing channel is characterized as a multipath channel with echoes from a target itself, an environmental background of the target and / or local environment / background of a sensing transmitter (STx) and a sensing receiver (SRx) . Such multipath channels exist under line-of-sight (LOS) or non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions. For instance, if the channel is associated with an LOS condition, the receiver may receive one copy of the transmitted sensing signal directly from the sensing transmitter in addition to receiving multiple copies of the sensing signal due to the surrounding environment.

[0004] In bi-static and multi-static sensing, the effect of echoes that are induced by the environment and environmental objects surrounding a sensing target or the sensing receiver / transmitter is undesirable.

[0005] This background information is provided to reveal information believed by the applicant to be of possible relevance to the present disclosure. No admission is necessarily intended, nor should be construed, that any one of the preceding information constitutes prior art against the present disclosure.SUMMARY

[0006] Some aspects of the present disclosure relate to: (i) providing a solution for classifying environmental echoes from a sensing perspective into echoes related to the sensing target itself, echoes related to ghost targets induced by only the environment and ghost targets induced by the environment and the target itself; (ii) devising new assistance data signaling related to the expected attributes of targets to help in reducing the biases due to having ghost targets; (iii) devising new LOS / NLOS indicators to identify different types of ghost targets.

[0086] In the following description, reference is made to the accompanying figures, which form part of the present disclosure, and which show, by way of illustration, specific aspects of one or more embodiments or examples of the present disclosure or specific aspects in which one or more embodiments or examples of the present disclosure may be used. It is understood that the embodiments or examples of the present disclosure may be used in other aspects and include structural or logical changes that may not be depicted in the figures. The following detailed description, therefore, is not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the present disclosure is defined by the appended claims.

[0087] Examples of wireless communication systems and devices are described below.

[0088] FIG. 1 is a simplified schematic illustration of a communication system according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 1, as an illustrative example, a simplified schematic illustration of a communication system is provided. The communication system 100 may include a radio access network 120. The radio access network (RAN) 120 may be a future generation radio access network, or a legacy (such as 5th generation (5G) , 4th generation (4G) , 3rd generation (3G) or 2nd generation (2G) ) radio access network, the RAN 120 may be a network using another radio access technology. In some implementations, radio access refers to a future generation air interface of standards which may include both terrestrial networks (TNs) and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) , and more details will be described below. One or more communication electronic device (ED) 110a, 110b, 110c, 110d, 110e, 110f, 110g, 110h, 110i, 110j (generically referred to as 110) may be interconnected to one another or connected to one or more network nodes 170a, 170b (generically referred to as 170) in the RAN 120. A core network (CN) 130 may be a part of the communication system and may be dependent or independent of the radio access technology used in the communication system 100. The communication system 100 may also include a public switched telephone network (PSTN) 140, the internet 150, and other networks 160.

[0089] In general, the communication system 100 enables communication of multiple wireless or wired elements. The communication system 100 may provide content, such as voice, data, video, and / or text, via broadcast, multicast, groupcast, unicast, etc. The communication system 100 may operate by sharing resources, such as carrier spectrum bandwidth, among its constituent elements.

[0090] The communication system 100 may provide a wide range of communication services and applications including enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services, ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services, massive machine type communication (mMTC) services, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) , immersive communication, massive communication, Hyper reliable and low-latency communication, ubiquitous connectivity, integrated AI and communication, and other services that can be provided by a future generation communication system. The communication system 100 may provide other services and applications such as earth monitoring, remote sensing, passive sensing and positioning, navigation and tracking, autonomous delivery and mobility, etc.

[0091] The communication system 100 may include a terrestrial communication system (or network) and / or a non-terrestrial communication system (or network) . The communication system 100 may provide a high degree of availability and robustness through a joint operation of a terrestrial communication system and a non-terrestrial communication system. For example, integrating a non-terrestrial communication system (or components thereof) into a terrestrial communication system can result in a heterogeneous network including multiple layers. The heterogeneous network may achieve better overall performance through efficient multi-link joint operation, more flexible functionality sharing, and faster physical layer link switching between terrestrial networks and non-terrestrial networks. The terrestrial communication system and the non-terrestrial communication system could be considered sub-systems of the communication system 100.

[0092] FIG. 2 is a schematic illustration of another example communication system according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. As described earlier, the communication system 100 may include EDs 110a, 110b, 110c, 110d (generically referred to as ED 110) , RAN 120a, 120b, and one or more of a CN 130, a PSTN 140, the internet 150, and other networks 160. In addition, the communication system 100 may also include a non-terrestrial network (NTN) 120c. The RANs 120a, 120b may include respective network nodes 170a, 170b such as base stations 170a, 170b, which may be generically referred to as terrestrial network (TN) devices or terrestrial transmit and receive points (T-TRPs) 170a, 170b (generically referred to as 170) . As referred to herein, the terms “TRP” and “base station” may be used interchangeably unless explicitly noted otherwise in a given example or section. For brevity, this disclosure may primarily refer to base station; however, absent an explicit limitation, references to TRP are merely non-limiting instances of interchangeable use. The T-TRPs 170a, 170b may be base stations mounted on a building or tower. In one implementation, the NTN 120c includes a RAN node such as base station 172, which may be generically referred to as an NTN device, a non-terrestrial node, a non-terrestrial network device, a non-terrestrial base station, or a non-terrestrial transmit and receive point (NT-TRP) 172.

[0093] In some implementations, the NT-TRP 172 is not attached to the ground, for example, in the case of an airborne base station. An airborne base station may be implemented using communication equipment supported or carried by a flying device. For example, a flying device may include an airborne platform (such as a blimp or an airship) , balloon, drone (such as quadcopter) , and other types of aerial vehicles. In some implementations, an airborne base station may be supported or carried by an unmanned aerial system (UAS) or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) , such as a drone. An airborne base station may be a moveable or mobile base station that can be flexibly deployed in different locations to meet network demand. A satellite base station is another example of a non-terrestrial base station. A satellite base station may be implemented using communication equipment supported or carried by a satellite. A satellite base station may also be referred to as an orbiting base station. High altitude platforms are yet another example of non-terrestrial base stations, including international mobile telecommunication base stations.

[0094] As referred to herein, and unless specified otherwise, a “TRP” may also refer to a T-TRP or an NT-TRP, a “T-TRP” may also refer to a “TN TRP” , and an “NT-TRP” may also refer to an “NTN TRP” . The NTN 120c may be considered to be a radio access network (RAN) , with operational aspects in common with the RANs 120a, 120b. The NTN 120c may include at least one NTN device and at least one corresponding terrestrial network device, the at least one NTN device may function as a transport layer device and the at least one corresponding terrestrial network device may function as a RAN node, which communicates with the ED 110 via the non-terrestrial network device. In addition, there may be an NTN gateway on the ground (i.e., referred to as a terrestrial network device) that also functions as a transport layer device to communicate with both the NTN device and the RAN node. The RAN node may communicate with the ED 110 via the NTN device and the NTN gateway. In some implementations, the NTN gateway and the RAN node may be located in the same device.

[0095] A base station (also referred to as a TRP as stated above) 170 may be a network element in radio access network responsible for radio transmission and reception in one or more cells to or from the user equipment. Base station 170 may be known by other names in some implementations, such as a base transceiver station (BTS) , a radio base station, a network node, a network device, a device on the network side, a transmit / receive node, a Node B, an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a Home eNodeB, a next Generation NodeB (gNB) , a transmission point (TP) , a site controller, an access point (AP) , a wireless router, a relay station, a terrestrial node, a terrestrial network device, a terrestrial base station, a positioning node, among other possibilities. The base station 170 may be a macro base station (BS) , a pico BS, a relay node, a donor node, or the like, or combinations thereof. When a base station 170 performs (or is configured to perform) a method described herein, it may be interpreted as the base station, one or more modules (or units) in the base station, a circuit or chip, or a combination thereof, may perform the method. For example, the circuit or chip may include a modem chip, also referred to as a baseband chip, a system on chip (SoC) including a modem core, system in package (SIP) , and the like, and may be responsible for one or more communication functions in the base station.

[0096] The EDs 110a-110d and TRPs 170a-170b, 172 are examples of communication equipment that can be configured to implement some or all of the operations and / or embodiments described herein. The T-TRP 170a forms part of the RAN 120a, which may include other TRPs, and / or other devices. Also, the TRP 170b forms part of the RAN 120b, which may include other TRPs, and / or devices. Each TRP 170a, 170b may transmit and / or receive wireless signals within a particular geographic region or area, sometimes referred to as a “cell” or “coverage area” . The TRPs 170a-170b may be responsible for allocating and  / or configuring resources and transmission and / or reception in a set of cells. A cell may be a radio network object that can be uniquely identified from a (cell) identification that is broadcasted over a geographical region or area from base stations associated with the cell. A cell can work in either FDD or TDD mode. A cell may be further divided into cell sectors, and a base station 170a-170b may, for example, employ multiple transceivers to provide service to multiple sectors. In some implementations, there may be established pico or femto cells where the radio access technology supports such. In some implementations, multiple transceivers could be used for each cell, for example using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. The number of RAN 120a-120b shown is an example only. Any number of RAN may be contemplated when devising the communication system 100.

[0097] Any base station may be a single element, as shown, or multiple elements, distributed in the corresponding RAN, or otherwise. In some implementations, a plurality of RAN nodes coordinate to assist the ED 110 in implementing radio access, and different RAN nodes separately implement different functions of the base station. For example, the RAN node may be a central unit (CU) , a distributed unit (DU) , a CU-control plane (CP) , a CU-user plane (UP) , or a radio unit (RU) etc. The CU and the DU may be separately deployed, or may be included in a same element (i.e., a baseband unit (BBU) ) . The RU may be included in a radio frequency device or a radio frequency unit (i.e., a remote radio unit (RRU) , an active antenna unit (AAU) , or a remote radio head (RRH) ) . In different systems, the CU (or the CU-CP and the CU-UP) , the DU, or the RU may also have different names, but a person skilled in the art may understand meanings thereof. For example, in an open radio access network (ORAN) system, a CU may also be referred to as an open CU (O-CU) , a DU may also be referred to as an open DU (O-DU) , and a CU-CP may also be referred to as an open CU-CP (O-CU-CP) . The CU-UP may also be referred to as an open CU-UP (O-CU-UP) , and the RU may also be referred to as an open RU (O-RU) . Any one of the CU (or the CU-CP, the CU-UP) , the DU, and the RU may be implemented by using a software module, a hardware module, or a combination of a software module and a hardware module.

[0098] Further, communication (s) between different devices / apparatuses in various embodiments of this application may refer to direct communication between different devices / apparatuses (that is, no forwarding is required by another device / apparatuses) , or may refer to communication (s) between different devices / apparatuses via another device / apparatus (that is, forwarding is required by another device / apparatus) . Alternatively, such communication (s) may refer to that a functional unit inside the device / apparatus uses another functional unit in the device / apparatus to communicate with another device / apparatus. In other words, "sending (or transmitting) information to... (an ED or a base station) " in this application may be understood as that a destination endpoint of the information is an ED or a base station. It may include sending / transmitting information directly or indirectly to an ED or a base station. Similarly, "receiving information from... (an ED or a base station) " may be understood as that a source endpoint of the information is an ED or a base station, and may include directly or indirectly receiving information from an ED or a base station. Necessary processing such as format conversion, digital-to-analog conversion, amplification, and filtering may be performed on the information between the source endpoint that sends the information and the destination endpoint. However, the destination endpoint may understand valid information from the source endpoint. Similar descriptions in this application may be understood similarly. Details are not described herein again. In the present disclosure, the terms "send" and "transmit" may be used interchangeably in embodiments of this application.

[0111] The apparatus 310 may further include one or more input / output devices (not shown) or interfaces. The input / output devices or interfaces permit interaction with a user or other devices in the network. Each input / output device or interface includes any suitable structure for providing information to or receiving information from a user, and / or for network interface communications. Suitable structures include, for example, a speaker, microphone, keypad, keyboard, display, touch screen, etc.

[0112] The processor 210 may perform (or control the apparatus 310 to perform) operations (or methods) described herein as being performed by the apparatus 310. For example, the processor 210 performs or controls the apparatus 310 to perform receiving transport blocks (TBs) , using a resource for decoding of one of the received TBs, releasing the resource for decoding of another of the received TBs, and / or receiving configuration information configuring a resource. In detail, the operation may include those operations related to preparing a transmission for UL transmission to the apparatus 320; those operations related to processing DL transmissions received from the apparatus 320; and those operations related to processing SL transmission to and from another apparatus 310. Processing operations related to preparing a transmission for UL transmission may include operations such as encoding, modulating, transmit beamforming, and generating symbols for transmission. Processing operations related to processing DL transmissions may include operations such as receive beamforming, demodulating and decoding received symbols. Processing operations related to processing SL transmissions may include operations such as transmit / receive beamforming, modulating / demodulating and encoding / decoding symbols. Depending upon the embodiment, a DL transmission may be received by the receiver 203, possibly using receive beamforming, and the processor 210 may extract signaling from the DL transmission (such as by detecting and / or decoding the signaling) . An example of signaling may be a reference signal transmitted by the apparatus 320. In some implementations, the processor 210 implements the transmit beamforming and / or the receive beamforming based on the indication of beam direction, such as beam angle information (BAI) , received from the apparatus 320. In some implementations, the processor 210 may perform operations relating to network access (such as initial access) and / or downlink synchronization, such as operations relating to detecting a synchronization sequence, decoding and obtaining the system information, etc. In some implementations, the processor 210 may perform channel estimation, such as using a reference signal received from the apparatus 320.

[0113] Although not illustrated, the processor 210 may form part of the transmitter 201 and / or part of the receiver 203. Although not illustrated, the memory 208 may form part of the processor 210.

[0114] The processor 210, the processing components of the transmitter 201, and the processing components of the receiver 203 may each be implemented by the same or different one or more processors that are configured to execute instructions stored in a memory (such as in the memory 208) .

[0115] The apparatus 320 includes one or more processors 260 (only one processor 260 is illustrated to in the figure) . The apparatus 320 may further include at least one transmitter 252 and at least one receiver 254 coupled to one or more antennas 256. Only one antenna 256 is illustrated to avoid congestion in the drawing. One, some, or all of the antennas 256 may alternatively be panels. The transmitter 252 and the receiver 254 may be integrated as a transceiver. The apparatus 320 may further include at least one memory 258. The apparatus 320 may further include scheduler 253. Only the transmitter 252, receiver 254, processor 260, memory 258, antenna 256 and scheduler 253 are illustrated for simplicity, but the apparatus 320 may include one or more other components. In present disclosure, the transceiver (or transmitter 252 and / or receiver254) may be viewed as an interface circuit.

[0116] In some implementations, the parts of the apparatus 320 may be distributed. For example, some of the modules of the apparatus 320 may be located remote from the equipment that houses the antennas 256 for the apparatus 320 (thereby also can be viewed as one or more nodes) , and may be coupled to the equipment that houses the antennas 256 over a communication link (not shown) sometimes known as front haul, such as common public radio interface (CPRI) . Therefore, in some implementations, the term apparatus 320 may also refer to nodes on the network side that perform processing operations, such as determining the location of the apparatus 310, resource allocation (scheduling) , message generation, and encoding / decoding, and that are not necessarily part of the equipment that houses the antennas 256 of the apparatus 320. The nodes may also be coupled to other apparatus 320s. In some implementations, the apparatus 320 may actually be a plurality of nodes that are operating together to serve the apparatus 310, such as through the use of coordinated multipoint transmissions, or the use of ORAN system as described above in the application.

[0117] The processor 260 performs operations including those related to: preparing a transmission for DL transmission to the apparatus 310, processing an UL transmission received from the apparatus 310, preparing a transmission for backhaul transmission to another apparatus 320, and processing a transmission received over backhaul from another apparatus 320. Processing operations related to preparing a transmission for DL or backhaul transmission may include operations such as encoding, modulating, precoding (such as multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding) , transmit beamforming, and generating symbols for transmission. Processing operations related to processing received transmissions in the UL or over backhaul may include operations such as receive beamforming, demodulating received symbols, and decoding received symbols. The processor 260 may also perform operations relating to network access (such as initial access) and / or DL synchronization, such as generating the content of synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) , generating the system information, etc. In some implementations, the processor 260 also generates an indication of beam direction, such as BAI, which may be scheduled for transmission by a scheduler 253 which will be described below. In some implementations, the processor 260 implements the transmit beamforming and / or receive beamforming based on beam direction information (such as BAI) received from another apparatus 320. The processor 260 performs other network side processing operations described herein, such as determining the location of the apparatus 310, determining where to deploy another apparatus 320, etc. In some implementations, the processor 260 may generate signaling, such as to configure one or more parameters of the apparatus 310 and / or one or more parameters of another apparatus 320. Any signaling generated by the processor 260 is sent by the transmitter 252. In some implementations, the apparatus 320 implements physical layer processing. In some implementations, the apparatus 320 may implement higher layer functions such as functions at the medium access control (MAC) or radio link control (RLC) layer in addition to physical layer processing. The apparatus 320 may further include scheduler 253 coupled to the processor 260 or integrated in the processor 260. The scheduler 253 may be included within or operated separately from the apparatus 320a. The scheduler 253 may schedule UL, DL, SL, and / or backhaul transmissions, including issuing scheduling grants and / or configuring scheduling-free (such as “configured grant” ) resources.

[0118] The apparatus 320 may further include a memory 258 storing instructions used to perform operations described herein. The memory 258 may also store data used, generated, or collected by the apparatus 320. For example, the memory 258 could store software instructions or modules configured to implement some or all of the functionality and / or embodiments described herein and that are executed by the processor 260.

[0119] Although not illustrated, the processor 260 may form part of the transmitter 252 and / or part of the receiver 254. Also, although not illustrated, the processor 260 may implement the scheduler 253. Although not illustrated, the memory 258 may form part of the processor 260.

[0120] The processor 260, the scheduler 253, the processing components of the transmitter 252, and the processing components of the receiver 254 may each be implemented by the same or different one or more processors that are configured to execute instructions stored in a memory, such as in the memory 258.

[0121] The apparatus 320 and / or the apparatus 310 may include other components, but these have been omitted for the sake of clarity.

[0122] Note that “signaling” , as used herein, may alternatively be called control signaling, control message, control information, or message for simplicity. Signaling between a base station (such as the TRP 170a-b, 172) and a UE or sensing device (such as ED 110) , or signaling between a different UE or sensing device (such as between ED 110a and ED 110b) may be carried in physical layer signaling (also called as dynamic signaling) , which is transmitted in a physical layer control channel. For DL, the physical layer signaling may be known as downlink control information (DCI) which is transmitted in a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) . For UL, the physical layer signaling may be known as uplink control information (UCI) which is transmitted in a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) . For SL, signaling between different UEs or sensing devices (such as between ED 110a and ED 110b) may be known as SL control information (SCI) which is transmitted in a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) . Signaling may be carried in a higher layer (such as higher than physical layer) signaling, which is transmitted in a physical layer data channel, such as in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) for downlink signaling, in a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) for uplink signaling, and in a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH) for SL signaling. Higher layer signaling may also be called static signaling, or semi-static signaling. Higher layer signaling may be radio resource control (RRC) protocol signaling or media access control -control element (MAC-CE) signaling. Signaling may be included in a combination of physical layer signaling and higher layer signaling.

[0123] It should be noted that in present application, “information” , when different from “message” , may be carried in one single message, or be carried in more than one separate message.

[0124] FIG. 4 is a schematic illustration of an apparatus (e.g., an apparatus 410) in a communication system according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The apparatus 410 may be a communication device or an apparatus implemented in a communication device such as the ED 110 or the TRPs 170a-170b, 172. For example, the apparatus implemented in a communication device may be an integrated circuit, which in some contexts may be known by other colloquial names, such as chip, modem, modem chip, baseband chip, or baseband processor. In some implementations, one or more integrated circuits can be packaged into a system-on-chip, a system-in-package, or a multi-chip module. The apparatus may include one or more integrated circuits or include one or more integrated circuits and other discrete components. In some implementations, the apparatus 410 may be a module in the ED 110, or the apparatus 310. In some implementations, the apparatus 410 may be a module in one of the TRPs 170a-170b, 172, or apparatus 320.

[0125] In an example, the apparatus 410 may include one or more processors / processor cores 411, and an interface circuit 412. The apparatus 410 may further include a memory 413. The one or more processors / processor cores 411 are configured to process signals and execute one or more communication protocols. The memory 413 is configured to store at least a part of corresponding computer program instructions and / or data. In an example, the one or more processors (or processor cores) 411 execute the computer program instructions stored in the memory 413 to implement related operations (for example, inputting, outputting, receiving, and transmitting) in the method embodiments disclosed herein. In some implementations, the memory 413 being configured to store the corresponding computer program instructions and / or data may mean that the memory 413 is configured to store all of the corresponding computer program instructions and / or data for execution by the one or more processors / processor cores 411. In some implementations, the memory 413 being configured to store the corresponding computer program instructions and / or data may mean that the memory 413 is configured to store a part of the corresponding computer program instructions and / or data. For example, the part of the corresponding computer program instructions and / or data may include computer program instructions and / or data that need to be currently executed by the one or more processors / processor cores 411. Thus, the memory 413 may store different parts of computer program instructions and / or data for a plurality times for the one or more processors (or processor cores) 411 to perform related operations in the method embodiments disclosed herein. As a communication interface, the interface circuit 412 is configured to implement communication with another component. For example, the interface circuit 412 may communicate a signal with other apparatus / system such as a radio frequency processing apparatus, or processor system. Optionally, to reduce a load of the one or more processors (or processor cores) , a baseband signal processing circuit 414 may be also disposed to implement processing of at least a part of baseband signals, including signal demodulation, modulation, encoding, decoding, or the like.

[0126] Apparatus 410 may be processor 210 (or 260) in apparatus 310 (or 320) , in some scenarios, or included in processor 210 (or 260) in apparatus 310 (or 320) in some scenarios. Apparatus 410 may be or include a baseband chip. In some implementations, the apparatus 410 may be independently packaged into a chip. In some implementations, the apparatus 310 (or 320) includes different types of chips. The apparatus 410 may be packaged into a processor chip (for example, an SoC chip or an SIP chip) with the different types of chips. In some implementations, the apparatus 410 may be packaged into a chip with some or all of circuits of a radio frequency processing system that may further included in the apparatus 310 (or 320) .

[0127] FIG. 5 is a schematic illustration an apparatus in a communication system according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure, which illustrates an example of apparatus 510. The apparatus 510 may include corresponding modules or units configured to implement methods and / or embodiments described herein. In some implementations, the apparatus 510 includes a processing unit 512 and a communication unit 513. Optionally, the apparatus 510 may further include a storage unit 511 configured to store apparatus program code (or instructions) and / or data.

[0129] The apparatus 510 may be a base station side apparatus, for example, a base station or a module in a base station, or a circuit or a chip responsible for a communication function in a base station. In some implementations, the apparatus 510 may be the apparatus 320. The processing unit 512 may be the processor 260 (the scheduler 253 may also be included) . The communication unit 513 may include a receiving unit and / or a transmitting unit. The receiving unit and / or the transmitting unit may be the transmitter 252 and / or the receiver 254 respectively. The storage unit 511 may be the memory 258.

[0130] In some implementations, when the apparatus 510 is an ED 110 or a module in an ED 110, a function of the apparatus 510 may be implemented by one or more processors. Specifically, the processor may include a modem chip, or a system on chip (SoC) chip or an SIP chip that includes a modem core. A function of the communication unit 513 may be implemented by a transceiver circuit.

[0131] In some implementations, when the apparatus 510 is a circuit or a chip that is responsible for a communication function in an ED 110, for example, a modem chip, a system on chip (SoC) chip or an SIP chip that includes a modem core, a function of the processing unit 512 may be implemented by a circuit system that is in the chip and that includes one or more processors or processor cores. A function of the communication unit 513 may be implemented by an interface circuit or a data transceiver circuit on the foregoing chip.

[0132] It may be understood that the units in the apparatus 510 may be logical or functional. Each function may correspond to one functional unit, or two or more functions may be integrated into one functional unit. In actual implementation, all or some of the units may be integrated into one physical entity, or may be distributed in different physical entities. In addition, the foregoing functional units may be implemented in a form of hardware, may be implemented in a form of software, or may be implemented in a form of a combination of hardware and software. Whether a function is performed in a form of hardware or software depends on particular applications and design constraint conditions of the technical solutions. A person skilled in the art may use different methods to implement the described functions for each particular application, but it should not be considered that the implementation goes beyond the scope of this application.

[0133] In an example, a functional unit in any one of the foregoing apparatuses may be configured as one or more integrated circuits for implementing the methods disclosed herein, for example, one or more application-specific integrated circuits (application-specific integrated circuits, ASICs) , one or more central processing units (central processing units, CPUs) , one or more microprocessors (microcontroller units, MCUs) , one or more digital signal processors (digital signal processors, DSP) , one or more field programmable gate arrays (field programmable gate arrays, FPGAs) , or a combination of at least two of these integrated circuit forms.

[0134] In an example, the storage unit 511 may include a random access memory, a flash memory, a read-only memory, a programmable read-only memory, an electrically erasable programmable memory, and / or a register.

[0135] A processor, a processor system, an application processor, a baseband processor, a processor circuit, or a processor core may be collectively referred to as a processor. The processor may include one or a combination of a central processing unit (CPU) , a digital signal processor (DSP) , a microprocessor (microprocessor unit, MPU) , a microcontroller (microcontroller unit, MCU) , a graphics processing unit (GPU) , a field programmable gate array (FPGA) , an artificial intelligence processor (AI processor) , or a neural network processing unit (NPU) .

[0136] Memory or a storage unit may include one or more of the following storage media: a random access memory (RAM) , a static random access memory (static RAM, SRAM) , a dynamic random access memory (dynamic RAM, DRAM) , a phase-change memory (PCM) , a resistive random access memory (resistive RAM, ReRAM) , a magneto-resistive random access memory (magneto-resistive RAM, MRAM) , a ferroelectric random access memory (ferroelectric RAM, FRAM) , a cache, a register, a read-only memory (ROM) , a flash memory (flash memory) , an erasable programmable read-only memory (erasable programmable ROM, EPROM) , a hard disk, and the like. In an example, computer program instructions used to execute embodiments may be stored in a non-volatile memory, for example, at least a part of a memory or storage unit (for example, one or more of a ROM, a flash memory, an EPROM, or a hard disk) . When a terminal runs, a part or all of corresponding computer program instructions may be loaded to a memory that has a higher transmission speed with the processor, for example, at least a part of a memory or a storage unit (for example, one or more of a RAM, an SRAM, a DRAM, a PCM, a RERAM, an MRAM, a FRAM, a cache, or a register) , so that the processor executes the computer program instructions to perform the steps in the method embodiments disclosed herein.

[0137] Several factors may impact the accuracy of sensing systems, of which multipaths may be considered as one of the key factors. The multipaths deteriorate the sensing results in situations where the multipaths create multiple ghost targets at the receiver side. Moreover, traditional sensing technologies may assume a line-of-sight (LOS) to the sensing target. However, the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) condition is generally the dominant channel condition in actual situations which may introduce large biases in the sensed information. In bi-static and multi-static sensing, the multipath channel components, in addition to the LOS component (if it exists) , may include (i) echoes directly coming from the environment, i.e., the transmitted signal may experience one bounce on an environmental object (EO) before the signal is received at the sensing receiver; this is denoted by TX-EO-RX (ii) an echo coming directly from the sensing target itself which is denoted by TX-ST-RX (iii) a random echo that may be induced by stochastic clutter (SC) which is denoted by TX-SC-RX (iv) an echo that experienced two bounces, the two bounces may include a first bounce at an EO and a second bounce at the sensing target before being received at the sensing receiver, and this echo is denoted by TX-EO-ST-RX (v) an echo that experienced two bounces where the first bounce happens at the sensing target and the second bounce happens at an EO, and this echo is denoted by TX-ST-EO-RX (vi) similarly, there may be two-bounce echoes that experience clutter at each of the two bounces like TX-SC-ST-RX and TX-ST-SC-RX.

[0138] Ghost targets may be defined as unreal targets that appear at undesirable locations in data such as, but not limited to, radar data or sensing data and are caused by the presence of multiple indirect reflections between the sensing transmitter (STx) and the sensing receiver (SRx) .

[0139] FIG. 6 is an illustration of the effect of an example environment in creating ghost targets due to the different multipath channel components according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 6 illustrates the different echoes that the sensing receiver may receive due to the sensing signal transmitted towards the real target. FIG. 7 is an illustration of possible power delay profiles of a received sensing signal at the sensing receiver according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 6 shows four possible ghost targets that may induce multipath peaks at the sensing receiver as indicated in FIG. 7.

[0140] In monostatic sensing, several signal de-ghosting algorithms and techniques may be employed that aim to identify direct paths (paths from the radar system to the sensing target and then reflected directly from the target to the radar system) and indirect paths (paths that bounce multiple times between the radar and the sensing target) . One such technique is based on matching the angle of departure (AoD) with the angle of arrival (AoA) of the received multipath component since the angles of arrival of the direct paths are equal to the angles of departure. Another technique is based on range gating, that is, to identify direct paths based on their delay proximity to the target delay and indirect paths based on their delay disparity. Another technique is based on jointly analyzing delay-doppler distribution of the received multipaths where the indirect paths due to static objects have almost zero Doppler shifts.

[0141] In bi-static and multi-static sensing, ghost target suppression may be more difficult to achieve than in a monostatic sensing setup. This is due to the separation between the transmitter and receiver in bi-static sensing and multi-static sensing setups. For instance, the angle of departure of the direct paths are not equal to the angle of arrival. This is because of the different orientations and locations of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver (s) . Hypothesis testing may be used to check whether a target component belongs to the NLOS or not.

[0142] 5G positioning assistance data / information provides coarse information about the existence of LOS or NLOS condition between each TRP and a target UE (e.g., a positioning receiver) . This LOS or NLOS information about the channel condition may be used as an indication of how reliable the measurements or the position calculations associated with it are.

[0143] Most of the angle matching techniques may require higher angular resolution to accurately identify direct paths and indirect paths. Moreover, these techniques also work mostly in a monostatic sensing setup and may not perform reliably in a bi-static and / or multi-static sensing setups. Additionally, these techniques may not be able to identify the indirect paths induced by the environment or an environmental object that is near the target since they may have similar or approximately similar angles of arrival and / or angles of departure.

[0144] On the other hand, range gating techniques may not be reliable in urban areas due to the large number of reflections / scattering from environmental objects that are in the proximity of the target which induce multipath with comparable delays and ranges. For instance, all objects between the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver, that lie on an elliptic contour where its focal points are the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver, have the same range or delay.

[0145] Doppler-based techniques have limited capabilities for identifying indirect paths or ghost targets that have similar speeds to the speed of the target.

[0146] 5G positioning LOS and NLOS indicators may be defined for positioning targets and not for the sensing targets assuming that the positioning targets are equipped by processing circuitries. These indicators only indicate the condition of the channel between a positioning anchor and the target UE. The indicators may provide ambiguous information to the sensing receiver when it is used to indicate channel conditions of the sensing targets. For instance, the path from the sensing transmitter to the target and then from the sensing target to the sensing receiver is considered “indirect path or NLOS path” when it is compared to the direct path from the sensing transmitter to the sensing receiver using the perspective of positioning procedure and its NLOS / LOS indicator.

[0147] In bi-static and multi-static sensing, the effect of echoes that are induced by the environment and environmental objects surrounding the sensing target or the sensing receiver / transmitter are undesirable. It creates multiple ghost targets that make detecting or sensing the main target nearly impossible. This effect intensifies in urban or suburban environments where the sensing transmitter, the sensing receivers and / or the sensing target are surrounded by many reflectors / scatters, especially, when the sensing area is relatively small. This increases the probability of receiving multi-bounce paths with relatively high power which in turn increases the probability of having multiple ghost targets. Thus, a generalized framework for exploiting environmental information to reduce ghost targets in bi-static and / or multi-static sensing is required.

[0148] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to utilizing assistance information related to a sensing target and / or one or more ghost targets for enabling a sensing receiver determine and / or obtain measurements related to the sensing target.

[0149] Aspects of the present disclosure enable the sensing transmitter or a network node (that orchestrates the sensing procedure) to utilize the knowledge of the positions of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver and the environmental map (e.g., a map of the environment) to predict one or more characteristics of the possible ghost targets, such as, but not limited to, expected AOAs, AODs, delays, powers, and to indicate these characteristics to the sensing receiver. The sensing receiver then utilizes the information about the characteristic of the ghost targets to identify the ghost targets and cancel these ghost targets out from either the received signals and / or from the decision output. For instance, if the decision output includes only delays of the received signals, the decision function at the receiver may output a set of delays of the received multipath signals and with the knowledge of the delay of the ghost target (s) , the receiver may remove the closest output delay to the delay of the ghost target from the set of output delays.

[0150] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to application scenarios where the sensing procedures described herein are conducted in bi-static and / or multi-static sensing setups.

[0151] Sensing Management Function (SeMF) : It is a physical or a logical network entity that orchestrates the sensing procedures starting from sending assistance data, coordinating measuring and reporting procedures to calculating sensing parameters.

[0152] Sensing Transmitter (STx) : It is either a network node or a UE in an RRC-connected state, that is able to receive sensing assistance data, send sensing reference signals according the required configuration set by the network. The position of this node is known by the node itself with an accuracy higher that the accuracy required for positioning the target UE.

[0153] Sensing Receiver (SRx) : It is either a network node or a UE in an RRC-connected state, that is able to receive sensing assistance data and receive and process multiple echoes of a received sensing reference signals according the required configuration set by the network. The position of this node is known by the node itself with an accuracy higher than the accuracy required for positioning the target UE.

[0154] Sensing Target (ST) : It is a passive sensing target or a UE in an idle state or a turned OFF state which needs to be sensed. In some situations, the ST may not be able to receive, transmit or process sensing signals.

[0155] Ghost Target (GT) : Ghost targets are unreal targets that appear at undesirable locations in data such as, but not limited to, radar data or sensing data, and are caused by the presence of multiple indirect reflections between the sensing transmitter (STx) and the sensing receiver (SRx) .

[0156] Clutter: Clutter is the unwanted return (echoes) from uncharacterized environment background.

[0157] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to enabling the sensing transmitter (STx) or a network node (that orchestrates the sensing procedure) to utilize the knowledge of the positions of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver (SRx) and the environmental map to predict one or more characteristics of the possible ghost targets, such as, but not limited to, expected AOAs, expected AODs, expected delays, expected powers, and indicate these characteristics to the sensing receiver.

[0158] Echoes received at the sensing receiver due to environmental objects, may be an undesirable outcome of the target sensing procedure, which may induce various types of ghost targets: (i) ghost targets that are induced by the target’s local environment, e.g., objects in the vicinity of the sensing target. These ghost targets are associated with the TX-EO-RX channel paths (ii) ghost targets that are induced by the sensing transmitter’s local environment, e.g., objects in the vicinity of the sensing transmitter. These ghost targets are associated with the TX-EO-ST-RX channel paths and (iii) ghost targets that are induced by the sensing receiver’s local environment, e.g., objects in the vicinity of the sensing transmitter. These ghost targets are associated with the TX-ST-EO-RX channel paths. It is worth mentioning that latter two types of ghost targets are dependent on the target and environment, whereas the former depends on only the environment.

[0159] FIG. 8 is an illustration of an example target-independent ghost target due to TX-EO-RX echoes according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The ghost targets due to TX-EO-RX channel paths / components shown in FIG. 8 may have undesirable impact on the detection of the real target since the power of its received components may overshadow the received components of the sensing target itself, i.e., TX-ST-RX. Moreover, its delay may be very close to the delay of the real target which adds more ambiguity. However, this type of ghost target may be predicted with high precision since it depends on direct reflection / scattering from the environment that may be predicted given the RF / geometric environmental map information and locations of the sensing transmitter and sensing receiver.

[0160] There are ghost targets that depend on the target itself such as ghost targets due to TX-EO-ST-RX and TX-ST-EO-RX echoes. FIG. 9 is an illustration of an example target-dependent ghost target due to TX-EO-ST-RX echoes according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 10 is an illustration of an example target-dependent ghost target due to TX-ST-EO-RX echoes according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The attributes / characteristics of these ghost targets may be predicted given the coarse position information about the target in addition to the RF / geometric environmental map information and locations of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver.

[0161] FIG. 11 is a schematic flowchart of a method according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The method may be performed by a first device, and may be applied to a communication system (e.g., a sensing network) including a first device (e.g., a sensing receiver) , a second device (e.g., a sensing transmitter) , and a third device (e.g., an SeMF) . Referring to FIG. 11, the method may include the following steps:

[0162] At step 1101, the first device receives assistance information related to one or more targets from the third device.

[0163] At step 1102, the first device receives a sensing signal from the second device.

[0164] At step 1103, the first device transmits a sensing result to the third device. The sensing result is determined based on the assistance information by the first device. In some implementations, the sensing result is transmitted, after the first device obtains or determines the sensing result. The sensing result may be determined based on utilizing or processing the assistance information at the first device.

[0165] In an example process, the third device may transmit assistance information related to one or more targets to the first device, the second device may transmit a sensing signal to the first device, after receiving the assistance information and the sensing signal, the first device may determine a sensing result based on the assistance information and the sensing signal. At the third device side, the third device may receive the sensing result sent from the first device. Since the assistance information is related to one or more targets, the performance of the sensing process can be improved. In some cases, introducing of the assistance information related to one or more targets may help in reducing the biases due to ghost targets.

[0166] In an embodiment, the second device may receive assistance information related to one or more targets; and transmit a sensing signal to the first device, wherein the sensing signal is obtained based on adapting beamforming according to the assistance information. At the first device side, first device may receive the sensing signal obtained based on adapting beamforming according to the assistance information. After receiving the assistance information related to one or more targets, the second device may utilize the received assistance information to adapt the characteristics or the parameters of the sensing signal, e.g., steer the direction of the sensing beamforming in a way that avoids creating multiple ghost targets, to be transmitted to the first device. In this method, the performance of the sensing process can be improved.

[0167] In an implementation, the one or more targets may include a sensing target and wherein the assistance information includes expected characteristics related to the sensing target. In some cases, the assistance information may include statistics data related to the sensing target which may include a range or a window of measurements for enabling the sensing receiver to identify measurements related to the sensing target. Accordingly, the first device, when processing the measurements, identifies that measurements outside the range or window of measurements indicated in the assistance information, are associated with ghost targets and processes the sensing information related to the sensing target accordingly.

[0168] In an implementation, the one or more targets may include one or more ghost targets, wherein the assistance information includes expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets. In some cases, the assistance information may include assistance data related to the ghost targets that is aimed to help the sensing receiver identify the attributes or characteristics of the ghost targets by matching the attributes of the received multipath signals and the expected ghost target data.

[0169] In an implementation, the assistance information may be determined based on at least one of a coarse position of the sensing target, a position of the second device, a position of the first device, or an environmental map. In some cases, the assistance information may be predicted based on at least one of a coarse position of the sensing target, a position of the second device, a position of the first device, or an environmental map.

[0170] In an implementation, the expected characteristics related to the sensing target may include coarse measurements related to at least one of an angle of arrival (AOA) , an angle of departure (AOD) , a delay, or a power of signals related to the sensing target. In some cases, the coarse measurements may include one or more attributes or characteristics of sensing targets, such as an AOA, an AOD, a power and a relative time difference (RTD) .

[0171] In an implementation, the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets may include coarse measurements related to at least one of an AOA, an AOD, a delay, or a power of signals related to the one or more ghost targets. In some cases, the coarse measurements may include one or more attributes or characteristics of expected ghost targets, such as an expected AOA, an expected AOD, an expected power and an expected relative time difference (RTD) .

[0172] In an implementation, the assistance information may include assistance information related to a threshold number of ghost targets, wherein the threshold number is determined based on a processing capability of the first device. Based on the indicated assistance information related to the threshold number of ghost targets, the processing of the first device may be guaranteed.

[0173] In an implementation, step 1103 may include identifying one or more ghost targets based on at least one of the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets, or the expected characteristics related to the sensing target and the received sensing signal.

[0174] In some cases, based on the at least one of the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets, or the expected characteristics related to the sensing target and the received sensing signal, the first device may identify the one or more ghost targets, and transmit information related to the identified one or more ghost targets as the sensing result to the third device. Based on the information related to the identified one or more ghost targets, the third device may identify the sensing target. This improves the overall performance of the sensing process.

[0175] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to ghost target assistance data (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) being signaled as a part of sensing assistance data (e.g., the assistance information related to one or more targets mentioned above) to help the sensing receiver (e.g., the first device mentioned above) to identify the ghost targets from real intended sensing targets.

[0176] FIG. 12 is an illustration of example attributes of the ghost targets according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. The ghost target assistance data (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) may be used by the an SeMF (e.g., the third device) to provide one or more attributes or characteristics of expected ghost targets, such as an expected AOA, an expected AOD, an expected power and an expected relative time difference (RTD) , and their uncertainties per ghost target as a part of assistance data signaled to the sensing receiver. The term ‘uncertainties’ used in the present disclosure may refer to the uncertainty of the characteristics related to the ghost targets, i.e., the uncertainty of the AOA, uncertainty of the AOD, uncertainty of the RTD, and uncertainty of power. For instance, if the AOA is 30 degrees and its uncertainty is + / -3 degrees, a channel path / component that is related to a GT is “likely / expected / anticipated” to be received at the sensing receiver at the AOA of 30 degrees + / -3 degrees (e.g., 29 degrees, or 31 degrees) .

[0177] The expected angle of departure (AOD) may be provided as global coordinates or as relative or local coordinates to the sensing receiver. For instance, the AOD may be provided relative to the direction of LOS, if it exists, or a hypothetical LOS (LOS direction or line connecting the position of the sensing transmitter to the position of the sensing receiver) . Given the environmental map, location information of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver, and AODs of ghost targets may be predicted. For target-independent ghost targets, AODs of TX-EO-RX echoes can be calculated based on identifying the environmental objects (EO) that may interact with the transmitted sensing signal and eventually contribute with a TX-EO-RX echo at the sensing receiver. For each identified EO, an AOD is calculated as the departure angle toward that identified EO.For example, this AOD can be calculated as the departure angle in the direction of the line connecting the location of the sensing transmitter to an intersection point on the surface of the identified EO (as illustrated in FIG. 12) . This intersection point is obtained by intersection of the line, connecting the mirror of the position of the sensing transmitter around the EO surface to the position of the sensing receiver, with the surface of the identified EO. Thus, for each visible / identified EOj, the TX or the SeMF can calculate the angle of departure of the j-th ghost target associated with EOj. On the other hand, for the ghost targets related to TX-ST-EO-RX and TX-EO-ST-RX echoes, the visibility or the identification of EOs, that may contribute with echoes and create ghost targets at the sensing receiver, may be based on utilizing coarse position information about the sensing target in addition to the environmental map, and the location information of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver. The coarse position information of the sensing target may be used to calculate either the AOD from the sensing transmitter to the sensing target, in case it is a TX-ST-EO-RX echo, or the AOD from the sensing transmitter to the identified EO that may contribute by an echo that hits the sensing target and creates a TX-EO-ST-RX echo.

[0178] Similarly, the expected AOA may be provided as global coordinates or relative or local coordinates to the sensing receiver and the AOA may be provided relative to the direction of LOS. The visibility or the identification of the EO to certain targets is determined based on the coarse position information of the target and beamforming information of the sensing TX. Referring to FIG. 12, for each visible EOj, the RX or the SeMF can calculate the angle of arrival of the j-th ghost target associated with EOj.

[0179] Another attribute of the ghost target is the delay of the received echo due to the ghost target. The expected delay of ghost target may be included in the ghost target assistance data in the form of relative time difference (RTD) between the delay of the received echo of the ghost target and a reference delay or time. Since the locations of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver are known, a delay of hypothetical line of sight can be calculated and utilized as a reference delay. The reference LOS delay is given as where ptx and prx are the locations of the sensing transmitter and receiver respectively, and C is the speed of light. Thus, the relative time difference of the i-th ghost target is given as may be associated by RTD uncertainty.

[0180] In some implementations, the ghost target assistance data may be divided into two groups concatenated together into one list. The first group is related to the attributes of target-independent ghost targets, i.e., AODs, AOAs, RTDs and power of TX-EO-RX echoes. The second group is related to the attributes of the target-dependent ghost targets i.e., AODs, AOAs, RTDs and power of TX-EO-ST-RX and TX-ST-EO-RX echoes. Maximum numbers of ghost targets per group is defined based on the processing capabilities of the sensing transmitter and the sensing receiver.

[0181] In an implementation, the first device may receive an indication of a path transmitted by the third device, wherein the indication includes at least one of a line-of sight (LOS) indication or a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) indication, wherein the indication of the path includes a first indication and a second indication, wherein the first indication is for a first link from the second device to the sensing target and wherein the second indication is for a second link from the sensing target to the first device, wherein the path includes the first link and the second link. After receiving the indication of the path, the first device may identify the one or more ghost targets based on the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets, the indication of the path and the received sensing signal. In general, the indication of the path provides information about the type of the ghost target. In some cases, the first device may identify a ghost target when it is determined that the channel path corresponding to the received sensing signal is related to the ghost target based on the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets, the indication of the path and the received sensing signal. In some cases, the indication can be used for indicating the best estimate or the likelihood of the LOS or NLOS of at least one path from the sensing transmitter to the sensing target and from the sensing target to the sensing receiver. In other words, the indication of the path is used for identifying different types of ghost targets. Based on both of the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets and the indication of the path, the accuracy of the determination of the one or more ghost targets is improved, thereby the biases due to having ghost targets is reduced.

[0182] In an implementation, the second device may receive an indication of a path transmitted by the third device, wherein the indication includes at least one of a line-of sight (LOS) indication or a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) indication, wherein the indication of the path includes a first indication and a second indication, wherein the first indication is for a first link from the second device to the sensing target and wherein the second indication is for a second link from the sensing target to the first device, wherein the path includes the first link and the second link. After receiving the indication of a path, the second device may update the received indication of a path based on at least one of one or more beamforming parameters pertaining to the second device or an environmental change pertaining to the second device, and transmit the updated indication of a path to the first device or the third device. In this method, the indication of a path can be optimized at least one of one or more beamforming parameters pertaining to the second device or an environmental change pertaining to the second device.

[0183] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator (e.g., the indication of a path mentioned above) . FIG. 13 is an illustration of example sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 13, the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator may be an information element that indicates the condition of the channel from the sensing transmitter (STx) to the sensing target (ST) and the channel from the sensing target (ST) to the sensing receiver (SRx1 or SRx2) .

[0184] The sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator may be defined as a field that specifies the best estimate or the likelihood of the LOS or NLOS of at least one path from the sensing transmitter to the sensing target and from the sensing target to the sensing receiver.

[0185] In an implementation, the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator can be indicated as a compound indicator of the two links / hops / steps (i.e., from the sensing transmitter to the target and from the target to the sensing receiver) with a value of 1 corresponding to the LOS between sensing TX (STx) and sensing Target (ST) and LOS between sensing Target ST and sensing RX (SRx) and a value of 0 corresponding to having NLOS in any of these links. It may be indicated as a form of soft indicator by using an integer value '0' which indicates likelihood 0, integer value '1' which indicates likelihood 1 with a scale factor 0.1 and range 0 to 1. Also, it may be indicated as a form of hard binary indicator by assuming FALSE which indicates likelihood '0' , and TRUE which indicates likelihood '1' . The two links / hops / steps may include the first link from the second device to the sensing target and the second link from the sensing target to the first device mentioned above. Table 1

[0186] Table 1 depicts different types of channel paths and how they are related to ghost targets and their corresponding fields, wherein each field represents a link, according to an implementation of the present disclosure.

[0187] In another implementation, the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator may consist of two fields concatenated together where the first field (e.g., the first indication mentioned above) represents the likelihood of LOS or NLOS between the sensing TX and Target and the second field (e.g., the second indication mentioned above) represents the likelihood of LOS or NLOS between the target and the sensing RX. Additionally, each field may be represented by either a soft indication or a hard indication. In another implementation, the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator may consist of two coupled or combined fields; one field is for indicating the type of the link, e.g., “0” for TX-ST and “1” for ST-RX link and the second field is for indicating the status of the link whether it is LOS or NLOS using either hard indication or soft indication. The sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator (e.g. a target / sensing-LOS-NLOS-indicator) is a per path indicator. For example, if the sensing receiver received 3 paths, the sensing receiver reports a sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator for each path.

[0188] In an implementation, the first device identifies one or more ghost targets based on the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets, the indication of the path and the received sensing signal. In this method, the accuracy of identifying the one or more ghost targets is improved. After the identifying the one or more ghost targets, the undesired ghost targets may be cancelled out from the received signal, thereby the biases due to having ghost targets is reduced.

[0189] In some cases, after receiving expected ghost target assistance data (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) and the sensing LOS / NLOS indicator (e.g., the indication of a path mentioned above) , the RX (e.g., the first device mentioned above) may be able to identify GTs and cancel them out from the received signal.

[0190] The received paths / echoes, that have LOS-LOS indicator (i.e., depicted in the first row of Table 1) and their delays, AOAs and AODs that match with delays, AOAs and AODs of expected ghost target assistance data (1 bounce or in the first group) , are classified as TX-EO-RX echo and undesired ghost targets and the undesired ghost targets are cancelled out from the received signal.

[0191] The paths / echoes, that have LOS-NLOS or NLOS-LOS indicator, and their delays and / or AOAs and / or AODs that match with delays, AOAs and / or AODs of expected ghost target assistance data (2 bounce or in the second group) , are classified as TX-EO-ST-RX or TX-ST-EO-RX echoes and undesired ghost targets and the undesired ghost targets are cancelled out from the received signal. Since these echoes (e.g., the TX-EO-ST-RX or TX-ST-EO-RX echoes) may have some information related to the target, they may be utilized in a better way than just cancelling them from the received signals. For example, these echoes (e.g., the TX-EO-ST-RX or TX-ST-EO-RX echoes) may be further processed to extract the information related to the target itself after identifying them as ghost targets.

[0192] In an implementation, step 1103 may include estimating a sensing parameter by cancelling the identified one or more ghost targets; and transmitting the sensing result including the estimated sensing parameter, wherein the sensing parameter includes at least one of an AoA, a delay, a velocity or a velocity vector related to the sensing target.

[0193] At the third device side, the third device may receive the sensing result including the estimated sensing parameters. In some cases, due to the environment and the existence of the sensing target, the sensing receiver may receive multiple echoes of the transmitted signals where some of these echoes may create ghost targets. After receiving the multiple echoes of the transmitted signals, the first device may identify the one or more ghost targets. After identifying the one or more ghost targets, the first device may estimate one or more sensing parameters by cancelling the identified one or more ghost targets, and transmit the estimated sensing parameters in the sensing result, to the third device. After receiving the sensing result which includes the estimated sensing parameters, the third device may determine the position information of the sensing target according to the estimated sensing parameters. In this method, the sensing time and latency may be reduced, and the reliability and / or accuracy of the sensing result may be improved. In this implementation, the identification and cancellation of the one or more ghost targets are performed by the first device.

[0194] In an implementation, the sensing result may include the indication of the path determined by performing measurements on the sensing target and multipath measurements. At the third device side, the third device may receive the indication of the path. In some cases, due to the environment and the existence of the sensing target, the sensing receiver may receive multiple echoes of the transmitted signals where some of these echoes may create ghost targets, after receiving the multiple echoes of the transmitted signals, the first device may collect multipath measurements and transmit the collected multipath measurements to the third device. In some cases, the first device may determine the indication of the path by performing measurements on the sensing target, and transmit the determined indication of the path to the third device. In some cases, the first device may transmit the collected multipath measurements and the determined indication of the path including in the sensing result to the third device. After receiving the indication of the path and the multipath measurements, the third device may identify one or more ghost targets based on the indication of the path and the multipath measurements, estimate a sensing parameter by cancelling the identified one or more ghost targets, and determine the position information of the sensing target according to the estimated sensing parameter. In this implementation, the identification and cancellation of the one or more ghost targets are performed by the third device. In this method, the sensing time and latency may be reduced, the reliability and / or accuracy of the sensing result may be improved, and the overhead of the first device may be reduced.

[0195] In an implementation, the sensing result may include sensing measurements related to the sensing target. At the third device side, the third device may receive the sensing measurements related to the sensing target. In some cases, after identifying and cancelling out the one or more ghost targets, the first device may determine the sensing measurements and transmit the determined sensing measurements to the third device. After receiving the determined sensing measurements, the third device may determine the position information of the sensing target based on the sensing measurements. In this implementation, the identification and cancellation of the one or more ghost targets are performed by the first device. In this method, the sensing time and latency may be reduced, the reliability and / or accuracy of the sensing result may be improved, and the overhead of the third device may be reduced.

[0196] In an implementation, the sensing result may include position information of the sensing target. At the third device side, the third device may receive the position information of the sensing target. In some cases, after identifying and cancelling out the one or more ghost targets, the first device may determine the position information of the sensing target and transmit the determined position information to the third device. In this implementation, the identification and cancellation of the one or more ghost targets are performed by the first device. In this method, the sensing time and latency may be reduced, the reliability and / or accuracy of the sensing result may be improved, and the overhead of the third device may be reduced. In another implementation, the received sensing result may further include sensing measurements. After receiving the determined sensing measurements, the third device may determine the position information of the sensing target based on the sensing measurements at the third device side, and compare the determined position information with the received position information to improve the accuracy of the position information of the sensing target.

[0197] It should be noted that information including in the sensing result of the present disclosure is not limited to at least one of: the estimated sensing parameter, the indication of the path determined by performing measurements on the sensing target and multipath measurements, sensing measurements related to the sensing target, the position information of the sensing target, or other information used for indicating the sensing result can be included in the sensing result.

[0198] In an implementation, the first device may further transmit an updated indication of the path, wherein the updated indication of the path is determined by performing path-related measurements. In some cases, the first device may perform path-related measurements (e.g., LOS / NLOS measurements or estimation) to obtain the updated indication of the path, and transmit the updated indication of the path to the third device. In this method, the indication of the path at the third device side is optimized.

[0199] In an implementation, the first device may further receive at least one of updated assistance information or an updated indication of the path from the second device, wherein the at least one of the updated assistance information or the updated indication of the path is obtained based on at least one of one or more beamforming parameters pertaining to the second device or an environmental change pertaining to the second device.

[0200] In an implementation, the second device adapts beamforming for transmission of the sensing signal according to the assistance information.

[0202] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a few example signaling procedures according to different implementations of the present disclosure.

[0203] FIG. 14 is a schematic flowchart of a method according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 14 illustrates the signaling procedure for enabling the sensing receiver 1403 (e.g., the first device mentioned above) detect the ghost target efficiently. The signaling procedure may begin by sending, to the sensing receiver 1403, target assistance data related to a sensing target or one or more ghost targets (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the sensing target or expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) as part of the sensing assistance data (e.g., the assistance information related to one or more targets mentioned above) . In some implementations, the target assistance data may include statistics data related to the sensing target (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the sensing target mentioned above) which may include a range or a window of measurements for enabling the sensing receiver 1403 identify measurements related to the sensing target. Accordingly, the sensing receiver 1403, when processing the measurements, identifies that measurements outside the range or window of measurements indicated in the assistance data, are associated with ghost targets and processes the sensing information related to the sensing target accordingly. In some implementations, the target assistance data may include assistance data related to the ghost targets (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) that is aimed to help the sensing receiver 1403 identify the attributes or characteristics of the ghost targets by matching the attributes of the received multipath signals and the expected ghost target data. Additionally, the SeMF 1401 (e.g., the third device mentioned above) may send target assistance data to the sensing transmitter 1402 (e.g., the second device mentioned above) . The sensing transmitter 1402 may utilize the target assistance data to adapt the characteristics or the parameters of the sensing signal, e.g., steer the direction of the sensing beamforming in a way that avoids creating multiple ghost targets, to be transmitted to the sensing receiver 1403. Further, the SeMF 1401 may send, to the sensing transmitter 1402 and the sensing receiver 1403, a sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicator (e.g., the indication of a path mentioned above) for identifying the type of the ghost targets. Optionally, the sensing transmitter 1402 may send an updated sensing assisted ghost target data and / or an updated sensing target’s NLOS / LOS indicator (e.g., the at least one of updated assistance information or an updated indication of a path mentioned above) . The updated assistance data (e.g., the updated sensing assisted ghost target data and / or the updated sensing target’s NLOS / LOS indicator) is obtained at the sensing transmitter 1402 and may be based on the beamforming parameters or a change of the environment that the sensing transmitter may measure or capture. The sensing transmitter 1402 may transmit to the sensing receiver 1403 a bi-static sensing signal that may illuminate the surface of the sensing target. Due to the environment and the existence of the sensing target, the sensing receiver 1403 may receive multiple echoes of the transmitted signals where some of these echoes may create ghost targets. The sensing receiver 1403 may utilize ghost target sensing assistance data and the sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicators to identify ghost targets and their types and cancel their echoes from the received signal. This enables the sensing receiver 1403 to estimate the sensing parameters of the sensing target accurately. The sensing receiver 1403 may feedback the estimated sensing parameters of the sensing target to the SeMF 1401. Optionally, the sensing receiver 1403 may include updated sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicators in the measurement report to the SeMF 1401 if it is able to perform LOS / NLOS measurements or estimation.

[0204] FIG. 15 is a schematic flowchart of a method according to one or more embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 15 illustrates another signaling procedure for enabling the sensing receiver 1503 (e.g., first device mentioned above) detect the ghost target efficiently.

[0205] Referring to FIG. 15, the signaling procedure begins by sending to the sensing receiver 1503, target assistance data related to a sensing target or one or more ghost targets (e.g., the expected characteristics related to the sensing target or expected characteristics related to the one or more ghost targets mentioned above) as a part of the sensing assistance data (e.g., the assistance information related to one or more targets mentioned above) to help the sensing receiver 1503 to identify the attributes of the ghost targets by matching the attributes of the received multipath signal and the expected ghost target data. Additionally, the SeMF 1501 (e.g., the third device mentioned above) may send target assistance data to the sensing transmitter 1502 (e.g., the second device mentioned above) . The sensing transmitter 1502 may utilize this data to adapt the characteristics or the parameters of the sensing signal, e.g., steer the direction of the sensing beamforming in a way that avoids creating multiple ghost targets, to be transmitted to the sensing receiver 1503. The sensing transmitter 1502 may send to the SeMF 1501, a sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indictor (e.g., the indication of a path mentioned above) of the attributes of ghost targets received in the assistance data previously. The sensing transmitter 1502 transmits to the sensing receiver 1503 a bi-static sensing signal that may illuminate the surface of the sensing target. Due to the environment and the existence of the sensing target, the sensing receiver 1503 may receive multiple echoes of the transmitted signals where some of these echoes may create ghost targets. The sensing receiver 1503 collects multipath measurements and may feed them back to the SeMF 1501. The sensing receiver 1503 may include sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicators in the measurement report to the SeMF 1501 based on performing LOS / NLOS measurements on the sensing target. The SeMF 1501 utilizes the received sensing target’s LOS / NLOS indicators received from the sensing transmitter 1502 and the sensing receiver 1503 along with the multipath measurements to cancel out the ghost targets and estimate the sensing parameters of the sensing target accurately.

[0206] Aspects of the present application aim to achieve one or more of the following: ● defining classification of environment echoes from a ghost target perspective; ● introducing assistance data signaling to help in reducing the biases due to ghost targets; ● introducing LOS / NLOS indicators to identify different types of ghost targets; ● introducing methods for detecting ghost targets and enhancing bi-static sensing.
