In particular, the disclosure relates to FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) to FPC or rigid PCB (Printed Circuit Board) direct connection with welding.
[0008] BACKGROUND
[0009] Typical solutions available on the market for connecting an FPC to another PCB which can be rigid or flexible are based on the following techniques. 1) A PCB is designed as a rigid-flexible PCB. This solution is expensive and limited by single PCB size. 2) A semi-flexible PCB with milled out portions is used to provide a flexible connection between two rigid parts. This solution is also expensive and limited by single PCB size. 3) Dedicated connectors or cables can be used. This solution is limited by geometry and affected by price related to extra parts such as connectors or sockets or cables if necessary. 4) Soldering provides a cheap solution based on bare material application but is sensitive for cracks caused by mechanical strains and materials extension according to temperature coefficients characteristic for each material.

[0014] This object is achieved by the features of the independent claims. Further implementation forms are apparent from the dependent claims, the description and the figures.
[0015] To overcome the above-described problems the disclosure presents a technique by which the first PCB (flexible) can be overlapped with a (second) flexible PCB (FPC) or a rigid one. Both two PCBs can be welded together in an area of mating pads with a spot-welding machine. Since copper is a material feasible for being welded, the process may be performed without any external materials. Hence, no extra layers on PCBs may be required. A standard stackup may be sufficient.
[0016] The solution described in this disclosure provides the following advantages: The solution can be implemented space-efficient by not using third party connectors. By using bare material instead of off-the-shelf components, the solution is cheaper and more environment-friendly, i.e., no single component production process behind and easy welding process in final application. Because of the character of the connection, i.e. by using welded connection of the same materials, e.g. copper, the relaxation of mating surfaces (caused by different extension temperature coefficient for different materials) can be realized without cracks and strains.
[0017] The presented solution can be implemented in various applications where flexible PCBs are used. For example, flexible PCBs that have always an interface to rigid master boards, e.g. applications in ambient lighting projects, charge ports, etc. Moreover, the solution represents a technology of connection between PCBs so it can be used also in other applications where multi-board systems are used, e.g., power distribution networks, lighting systems, HV Batteries, etc. The presented techniques can also be used for FPC-to-FPC connection, for example if the limit of single FPC length is reached.

[0028] According to a second aspect, the disclosure relates to a method for electrical connection of a first circuit board to a second circuit board by double-side welding, the method comprising: providing a first circuit board comprising at least one metal layer embedded within a plurality of cover layers, the at least one metal layer comprising at least one metal pad for an electrical connection of the first circuit board; providing a second circuit board comprising at least one metal layer embedded within a plurality of cover layers, the at least one metal layer comprising at least one metal pad for an electrical connection of the second circuit board; wherein the at least one metal pad of the first circuit board is overlying the at least one metal pad of the second circuit board when the first circuit board is placed on top of the second circuit board; placing the first circuit board on top of the second circuit board; electrically connecting two leads of a welding machine to part of the at least one metal pad on top of the first circuit board and part of the at least one metal pad on bottom of the second circuit board; and welding the at least one metal pad of the first circuit board to the at least one metal pad of the second circuit board by activating the welding machine.

The method (420) of claim 2, wherein activating the welding machine (130) enables a temporary current flow from a first lead (131) to a second lead (132) of the welding machine (130) via the at least one metal pad (311) of the first circuit board (110) and the at least one metal pad (311) of the second circuit board (120), the current flow welding the at least one metal pad (311) of the first circuit board (110) to the at least one metal pad (311) of the second circuit board (120).
5. The method (410, 420) of any of the preceding claims, wherein the first circuit board (110) is placed directly on top of the second circuit board (120) without any intermediate component in between.
6. The method (410, 420) of any of the preceding claims, wherein the welding comprises resistive or inductive welding.

8. The method (410, 420) of claim 7, wherein a size of the access holes (320) is same or different for two of the access holes (320).
9. The method (410, 420) of any of the preceding claims, wherein placing the first circuit board (110) on top of the second circuit board (120) comprises: placing a bottom surface of the first circuit board (110) on a top surface of the second circuit board (120).
10. An assembly (300) of a first circuit board (110) electrically connected to a second circuit board (120), the assembly (300) being obtained by a method according to any of the previous claims.
11. The assembly (300) of claim 10, wherein the first circuit board (110) is a flexible circuit board; and wherein the second circuit board (120) is a flexible or rigid circuit board.

The assembly (300) of claim 10 or 11 , comprising: at least one welding connection between at least one metal pad (311) of the second circuit board (120) and at least one metal pad (311) of the first circuit board (110) which is overlaying the at least one metal pad (311) of the second circuit board (120).
