Abstract

A unique set of viral antigens with serological responses that are significantly reduced in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were identified by profiling pan-viral serological repertoires among 2,647 study subjects. A common epitope (CE1) shared among reactive viral antigens belonging to the rhinovirus and enterovirus families was identified. Administration of the CE1 peptide induced cytolytic activity of T cells and killing of HCC tumor cells. Immunogenic peptides and compositions based on the CE1 peptide, and their use for the treatment, early intervention and prophylaxis of liver cancer (such as HCC or cholangiocarcinoma), are described.
