AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Aerosol hairsprays using Dimethyl Ether (DME) as a propellant face challenges in achieving stable formulation mixtures and optimal spray characteristics due to low VOC content, leading to unstable formulations and poor performance.

Method used

An aerosol hairspray formulation comprising 30-50% DME propellant, 30-50% water, 1-9% alcohol, and 1-5% high glass transition temperature acrylate copolymers, ensuring a stable and cohesive mixture with excellent spray and drying properties.

Benefits of technology

The formulation provides a stable, uniform mixture with fine spray characteristics and quick drying times, maintaining performance attributes while using a more environmentally friendly propellant.

Abstract

The invention relates to a dimethyl ether aerosol hairspray product. The hair spray product comprising: a) a pressurisable container comprising: i) a container wall which encloses a reservoir for storing a base formulation and a propellant; b) an aqueous base formulation comprising: (i) from 30 wt % to 50 wt % water, by total weight of the base formulation and propellant; (ii) from 1.0 wt % to 9 wt % alcohol, by total weight of the base formulation and propellant; and (iii) from 1.0 wt % to 5 wt % by total weight of the base formulation and propellant of one or more acrylate co-polymer hairstyling polymers with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of more than 35° C; c) 40 to 50 wt% of a dimethyl ether (DME) propellant by total weight of the base formulation and propellant; and d) a spraying device attached to the container for dispensing the base formulation from the reservoir of the container, which comprises a valve and an actuator. The invention provides a low-VOC hair spray with excellent stability, performance, spraying and drying properties.
