Description

A CONFIGURABLE GLUE DISPENSING STATIONFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] This invention relates to the robotic technique, and more particularly to a configurable glue dispensing station.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] With the rise of the 3C (Computer, Communication, Consumer Electronics) industry, the rapid development of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, as well as integrated circuits, has been remarkable. Traditional industrial glue dispensing has primarily focused on the automotive glue dispensing sector, where the precision and stability of the glue application have reached new heights under current industrial standards. With the rise of the 3C industry, the demand for automation in glue dispensing for electronic devices has become increasingly strong.

[0003] However, as compared to automotive glue dispensing, glue dispensing in the 3C industry is significantly different, requiring higher precision, finer glue lines, more complex dispensing processes, and lower costs.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The invention is defined by the claims.

[0005] According to one aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a configurable glue dispensing station comprising: a first type of glue dispensing device configured to apply glue on a work-piece; a first type of robot configured to held the first type of glue dispensing device or the work-piece; and a robot controller configured to couple to the first type of robot and the first type of glue dispensing device; wherein the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot including the first type of robot and a second type of robot, such that the second type of robot can be directly coupled to the robot controller to replace the first type of robot.

[0006] With the configurable glue dispensing station, the dispensing station may be configured with different types of robot based on actual needs, and thus provides a more flexible glue dispensing solution that can meet diverse glue dispensing demands and has the capability for modification and upgrades, allowing for rapid adaptation to new process requirements for next-generation products.

[0007] In some embodiments, the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot including the first type of robot, the second type of robot and a third type of robot, such that any one of the second type of robot and the third type of the third robot can be directly coupled to the robot controller to replace the first type of robot.

[0008] In some embodiments, the first type of robot, the second type of robot and the third type of robot are different from each other and selected from a group of a six-axis robot, a SCARA robot, and a gantry robot, respectively.

[0009] In some embodiments, the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of peripherals selected from a group of a 2D camera, a 3D camera, a line laser, a Z-laser, a crossbeam, a teach pendant unit (TPU) , a cleaning device, and a weighing device, such that any peripheral can be directly coupled to the robot controller, and enabled or disabled based on user’s needs.

[0010] In some embodiments, the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device including the first type of glue dispensing device and a second type of glue dispensing device, such that the second type of glue dispensing device can be selectively coupled to the robot controller to replace the first type of glue dispensing device.

[0011] In some embodiments, the robot controller has already been configured to support a plurality of gluing functions selected from a group consisting of tracking of a path to be glued, inspecting of the glue path, a gluing path edition function, a dynamic gluing function, a calibration function, a human machine interface (HMI) , a 2D or D3 vision function, a cleaning function, a weighing function, a process debugging function, a process parameter setting function, such that any of the gluing functions can selectively enabled or disabled based on actual needs.

[0012] In some embodiments, the human machine interface (HMI) may be configured with functions selected from a group of an online process debugging, a process parameter setting, a 2D or 3D visualization of the gluing path, and a calibration of positions of various components used within the glue dispensing station.

[0027] Embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in more details with reference to the drawings. Although the drawings illustrate some embodiments of the present disclosure, it should be appreciated that the present disclosure can be implemented in various manners and should not be interpreted as being limited to the embodiments explained herein. On the contrary, the embodiments are provided to understand the present disclosure in a more thorough and complete way. It should be appreciated that drawings and embodiments of the present disclosure are only for exemplary purposes rather than restricting the protection scope of the present disclosure.

[0028] In the descriptions of the embodiments of the present disclosure, the term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open-ended terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The terms “one embodiment” and “this embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The following text also can comprise other explicit and implicit definitions.

[0029] As described above, as compared to automotive glue dispensing, glue dispensing in the 3C industry is significantly different, requiring higher precision, finer glue lines, more complex dispensing processes, and lower costs.

[0030] For example, smartphones and laptops have high precision requirements for glue paths, which means higher demands on the path accuracy of robots. Traditional six-axis robots find it difficult to meet the path accuracy requirement of ±0.1mm. Additionally, in confined workspaces, due to the fact that the glue dispensing equipment is heavy, higher payload capacity is needed, requiring robots to handle equipment such as glue guns and cameras (which as a whole may be about 30kg) . Fig. 1 illustrates a schematic view of various types of robots with different path accuracy and payload capacity according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure. It is noted that for ease of understanding, in Fig. 1 merely three types of robot, i.e., a six-axis robot, a SCARA robot and a gantry robot, are illustrated, there, however, can be more different types of robot in the market.

[0031] Moreover, the glue dispensing process imposes additional demands on the robots and peripherals, such as glue path positioning, glue path width re-inspection, and processes like weighing the glue dispensing equipment, cleaning the glue, and calibration. Different products, such as smartphones and tablets, have significantly different requirements for the glue dispensing process. Customers need a more flexible glue dispensing solution that can meet the current diverse glue dispensing demands and has the capability for modification and upgrades, allowing for rapid adaptation to new process requirements for next-generation products.

[0032] Therefore, there is a need for a solution that can adapt to the diverse needs of the market and customers, and offers strong scalability. For this purpose, the present disclosure aims at providing a flexible and configurable glue dispensing station to accommodate various glue dispensing needs.

[0033] It is noted that traditional glue dispensing setups can only configure a single type of robot with fixed glue dispensing equipment. In contrast, the configurable glue dispensing station of the present disclosure can quickly adapt to multiple processes and meet customer requirements for upgrades and testing new processes.

[0034] According to the design of the present disclosure, the configurable glue dispensing station may comprise a first type of glue dispensing device configured to apply glue on a work-piece; a first type of robot configured to held the first type of glue dispensing device or the work-piece; and a robot controller configured to couple to the first type of robot and the first type of glue dispensing device. As compared to the traditional glue dispensing station, the configurable glue dispensing station of the present disclosure may further allow for the configuration of different types of robot, different types of glue dispensing device, a plurality of peripherals and / or a plurality of gluing functions based on actual needs.

[0035] In the present disclosure, the ability to allow for the configuration of different types of robot is realized by configuring or programming the robot controller in advance. Those skilled in the art would appreciate that in this way, when the present configurable glue dispensing station is put into use, the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot, even though within the configurable glue dispensing station, merely a single type of robot is coupled to the robot controller.

[0036] Herein, it should be understood that throughout the present disclosure, the expression “configuring or programming the robot controller in advance” may be equivalent to “the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to” , and then the two can be used interchangeably.

[0037] For example, a plurality of different types of robot may include a first type of robot and a second type of robot, then the expression “the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot” may indicate that the second type of robot can be directly coupled to the robot controller to replace the first type of robot.

[0038] For another example, a plurality of different types of robot may include a first type of robot, a second type of robot and a third type of robot, then the expression “the robot controller has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot” may indicate that any one of the second type of robot and the third type of the third robot can be directly coupled to the robot controller to replace the first type of robot.

[0039] Typically, the first type of robot, the second type of robot and the third type of robot are different from each other and may be selected from a group of a six-axis robot, a SCARA robot, and a gantry robot, respectively. Fig. 2 shows a schematic view of three types of robot that may be selectively coupled to the robot controller.

[0040] In some embodiments, the actual needs may be selected from a group of a path accuracy requirement, a payload capacity requirement, a required degree of freedom for a robot, and a space limitation. For example, if the load capacity of a six-axis robot is insufficient, a four-axis SCARA robot can be configured, and if both high load capacity and high path accuracy are required, a gantry robot can be configured.

[0041] Further, in some embodiments, the configurable glue dispensing station can also allow for the configuration of different types of glue dispensing device based on actual needs.

[0042] Similar to the configuration of different types of robot, such an ability to allow for the configuration of different types of glue dispensing device is also realized by configuring or programming the robot controller in advance. Those skilled in the art would appreciate that in this way, when the present configurable glue dispensing station is put into use, the robot controller present has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device, even though within configurable glue dispensing station, merely a first type of glue dispensing device is coupled to the robot controller.

[0043] For example, if a first type of glue dispensing device is not satisfactory in a scenario, a second type of glue dispensing device can be selected to replace the first type of glue dispensing device.

[0044] In some embodiments, a plurality of different peripherals may be selectively configured for the configurable glue dispensing station based on actual needs. Typically, the plurality of different peripherals may be selected from a group of a 2D camera, a 3D camera, a line laser, a Z-laser, a crossbeam, a teach pendant unit (TPU) , a cleaning device, and a weighing device. Fig. 2 also shows a schematic view of a plurality of different peripherals that may be selectively coupled to the robot controller.

[0045] The ability to allow for the configuration of the different plurality of different peripherals is also realized by configuring or programming the robot controller in advance. Those skilled in the art would appreciate that in this way, when the present configurable glue dispensing station is put into use, the robot controller present has already been configured with an ability to operate with the plurality of different peripherals, such that any of the plurality of different peripherals can be directly coupled to the robot controller.

[0046] In addition, in some embodiments, the robot controller may have also already been configured to support a plurality of gluing functions such that any of the gluing functions can be selectively enabled or disabled based on actual needs. The plurality of gluing functions may be selected from a group consisting of tracking of a path to be glued, inspecting of the glue path, a gluing path edition function, a dynamic gluing function, a calibration function, a human machine interface (HMI) , a 2D or D3 vision function, a cleaning function, a weighing function, a process debugging function, a process parameter setting function.

[0047] Particularly, in some embodiments, the human machine interface (HMI) may be configured with functions selected from a group of an online process debugging, a process parameter setting, a 2D or 3D visualization of the gluing path, and a calibration of positions of various components used within the glue dispensing station. In some embodiments, the human machine interface (HMI) may be configured with a main user interface comprising a list of glue path points, a 3D visualization interface for the list of glue path points, a point attribute editing interface, a multi-recipe management interface, a calibration interface, etc.

[0048] To better understand the configurable glue dispensing station of the present disclosure, below are some application scenarios showing the configurability of the present configurable glue dispensing station. Scenario 1: Glue Dispensing with Six-axis Robot

[0049] Fig. 3 shows a typical arrangement for a configurable glue dispensing station configured with a six-axis robot. This application scenario is e.g., for applying glue to a phone frame. Due to the complexity of the glue dispensing process for the phone frame, the robot needs a high degree of freedom. Also, the load capacity and path accuracy are not necessary high. As a result, as shown in Fig. 3, a six-axis robot 2 may be selectively coupled to the robot controller 1 for the glue dispensing, although the robot controller 1 may have already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot.

[0050] Further, the robot controller 1 may also have already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device and / or a plurality of peripherals. For example, as shown in Fig. 3, a first type of glue dispensing device 3, a linear laser 4 and a 2D camera 5 may be used, wherein the first type of glue dispensing device 3 may be equipped with a gluing nozzle having a specific size or shape, the linear laser 4 may be used to scan the surface of the work piece in advance, and the 2D camera 5 may be used to detect the gluing position and gluing quality.

[0051] It is therefore known that the specific type of robot, the specific type of glue dispensing device, the specific peripheral may be selected depending on the actual needs. Due to the fact that the robot controller 1 has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot, a plurality of peripherals, and / or a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device, it would be easy for a user to replace a specific type of robot, peripheral, or glue dispensing device with another type of robot, peripheral, or glue dispensing device based on actual needs. Scenario 2: Glue Dispensing with SCARA Robot

[0052] Fig. 4 shows a typical arrangement for a configurable glue dispensing station configured with a SCARA robot. In some scenarios, a high payload capacity is required and a working space is limited. Also, a certain level of path accuracy is required and a planar glue dispensing is sufficient. In this application scenario, although the robot controller 1 may have already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot, a SCARA robot 6 may be selectively coupled to the robot controller 1 for the glue dispensing.

[0053] Just as in the Scenario 1, although the robot controller 1 has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device and a plurality of peripherals, in Fig. 4 a first type of glue dispensing device 3, a linear laser 4 and a 2D camera 5 may be selectively used. Scenario 3: Glue Dispensing with Gantry Robot

[0054] Fig. 5 illustrates a typical arrangement for a configurable glue dispensing station configured with a Gantry robot. In some scenarios, a high path linearity and repeatability accuracy is required. Also, a planar glue dispensing is sufficient. In this application scenario, although the robot controller 1 has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot, a Gantry robot 7 may be selectively coupled to the robot controller 1 for the glue dispensing.

[0055] Just as in the Scenario 1, although the robot controller 1 has already been configured with an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device and a plurality of peripherals, in Fig. 5 a first type of glue dispensing device 3, a linear laser 4 and a 2D camera 5 may be selectively used.

[0056] The above Scenarios 1-3 are mainly focused on configuration of different types of robot, different types of glue dispensing device and a plurality of peripherals, various gluing functions may also be supported, enabled or disabled by the robot controller. Scenario 4: Human Machine Interface (HMI)

[0057] The human machine interface (HMI) can be supported by the robot controller, and may be enabled or disabled by the robot controller. As a typical human machine interface (HMI) , it may be configured with functions selected from a group of an online process debugging, a process parameter setting, a 2D or 3D visualization of the gluing path, and a calibration of a position of various components used within the glue dispensing station. Typically, these functions may be displayed in the human machine interface.

[0058] Just as an example, Fig. 6 illustrates a main user interface of the human machine interface. As shown in Fig. 6, the main interface consists primarily of the glue path points list (e.g., on the left side) and the 3D visualization interface (e.g., on the right side) . Glue path points can be imported from RAPID. mod files or other files containing point information. Combined with RobotStudio's path generation function, this allows for quick deployment and modification of glue paths. Each point provides attribute editing options, such as whether height measurement is required, whether there should be an offset, whether the glue valve should be turned on or off, and more.

[0059] The 3D visualization interface on the right side allows users to observe the path direction and attributes of the points, thereby reducing the likelihood of incorrect point coordinates or attributes due to selection or operational errors during on-site deployment. Additionally, 3D models can be imported and observed alongside the points to ensure setup accuracy before debugging.

[0060] Fig. 7 illustrates a point attribute editing interface of the human machine interface. As shown in Fig. 7, attribute options are provided for each point. This interface may be used to fine-tune position accuracy due to system errors. Fig. 8 illustrates a calibration interface of the human machine interface. As shown in Fig. 8, the calibration interface provides calibration operations for different TCPs (Tool Center Points) such as cameras, glue guns, laser pointers, etc.

[0061] In addition, a multi-recipe management interface may be provided, which may provide options for saving and retrieving different work piece types.

[0062] Although the human machine interface is described above comprising a main user interface, a 3D visualization interface for the list of glue path points, a point attribute editing interface, a multi-recipe management interface, or a calibration interface, it is understood that different or additional interfaces may be comprised by the human machine interface. Scenario 5: Other Gluing Functions

[0063] As described above, the robot controller of present disclosure may have already been configured to support, enable or disable a plurality of gluing functions as desired. In contrast, the traditional glue dispensing station are typically equipped with fixed gluing functions, and the user cannot configure the gluing function as desired.

[0064] For example, the robot controller may have already been configured to support a 2D vision function, such that a 2D camera may be directly connected / coupled to the robot controller. In some embodiments, the 2D camera may identify six feature points on the work piece to determine its X, Y, and θ (theta) positioning. By converting these coordinates, it provides the overall glue path trajectory for the work piece.

[0065] For another example, the robot controller may have already been configured to support an automatic calibration function. In this event, the 2D camera may also be selected to couple to the robot controller. In some embodiments, the 2D camera may use a checkerboard pattern as shown in Fig. 9 to calibrate the camera's internal parameters. Additionally, by capturing images at nine different points, it achieves automatic calibration for the entire gluing system.

[0066] For yet another example, the robot controller may have already been configured to support a nozzle calibration function. In this event, the 2D camera may also be selected to couple to the robot controller. During the nozzle calibration process, as shown in Fig. 10, the gluing system may apply the glue with the gluing nozzle to create a cross pattern and read the physical coordinates of the cross center to calculate the nozzle's center position P1 (X1, Y1) . Then, the 2D camera may identify the image coordinates of the cross center position P2 (X2, Y2) . By calculating the difference ΔP = P2 -P1, the system may achieve the nozzle calibration.

[0067] Various embodiments have been described with respect to the configurable glue dispensing station. Those skilled in the art would appreciate that the present disclosure thus provides an upgradeable and configurable glue dispensing station that meets diverse customer needs. Particularly, a user may selectively configure the glue dispensing station with different types of robot, different types of glue dispensing device, a plurality of different peripherals, and / or a plurality of gluing functions based on actual needs. In this way, the glue dispensing station can be upgraded or modified as desired without replacing the robot controller. Further, such an upgrade or modification may be implemented by the user itself without the participation of the manufacturer of the glue dispensing station. This would be particularly advantageous for customers in developing new processes, prototyping, and testing, reducing the development cycle and testing costs while providing a wide range of options.

[0068] In addition, those skilled in the art would appreciate that the present disclosure may also be directed to a computer readable medium having a computer program stored thereon which, when implemented by a robot controller, enables the robot controller to have an ability to operate with a plurality of different types of robot, a plurality of different types of glue dispensing device, a plurality of different peripherals, and / or a plurality of gluing functions.

[0069] Other variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, from a study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims. In the claims, the word "comprising" does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article "a" or "an" does not exclude a plurality. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage. Any reference signs in the claims should not be construed as limiting the scope.
