[0002] STABILIZING COMPOSITION FOR HALOGEN-CONTAINING POLYMERS FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention concerns a stabilized halogen-containing polymer, preferably polyvinylchloride (PVC), obtainable through the use of a stabilizing composition comprising at least one [3-diketone, at least one [3-aminocrotonate having a molecular weight equal to or greater than 256 g / mol and at least one hydrotalcite.

[0004] STATE OF THE ART

[0005] Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a well-known commodity plastic with a broad spectrum of properties. It can be rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible. It is widely used in various construction applications, including water, sewage, or drainage pipes and in many extruded profiles. The rigid PVC form has broad acceptance and exhibits a good market growth in major PVC product applications.

[0006] However, PVC is thermally unstable at processing temperatures. When PVC is heated to 170-200°C, chlorine and hydrogen in the molecules are eliminated, releasing hydrochloric acid (HCI), which in turn accelerates the thermal degradation process of the number of conjugated double bonds formed during the processing. It also causes the level of colour in the sample to range from yellow to black. HCI can also deteriorate the mechanical, thermal, and physical properties of PVC. Therefore, heat stabilizers are widely used to safeguard the vinyl products at all stages by improving the heat resistance of PVC products at high temperatures, preventing the chain reaction of degradation.

[0007] Heavy metal-based heat stabilizers such as lead (Pb)-based products are responsible for a large proportion of products in the heat stabilizer group. These products were widely used for the stabilization in Europe. However, through the regulation (Ell) 2023 / 923 of 3 May 2023 requiring that PVC polymers or copolymers thereof contain < 0.1% by weight of lead and its compounds, the use of Pb has been restricted due to toxicological concerns.

[0008] Consequently, considerable efforts have been devoted towards the development of new stabilization systems for PVC processing, which is driven by a desire to move away from stabilizers based on heavy metal.

[0009] Tin (Sn)-based stabilizers are now used in Europe and provide good stability and transparency. Lately however, tin (Sn)-based stabilizers are being investigated fortheirP023937WO-01 Notarbartolo & Gervasi S.p.A.

[0010] potential reprotoxicity, as well.

[0011] Alternative stabilizers to replace Pb-based stabilizers such as calcium zinc (Ca-Zn) and organic based stabilizers (OBSs) have been investigated. Their usage has been increased both in Europe and, in recent years due to economic growth, in emerging markets, as well; producers all over the world are switching to calcium zinc and organic alternatives because of legislation, market pressure, or on a voluntary basis, as they represent the most sustainable alternative, (adapted from Polymers 2022, 14, 133; Gardi, Polici, Gestione degli additivi per plastiche in allegato XIV e XVII del REACH, in “Reach-OSH“, Bologna (Italy), 15-16 / 10 / 2019).

[0012] Chinese patent application CN114437428A discloses an NBR / PVC modified foam material comprising a thermal stabilizer, said thermal stabilizer being mainly based on a Ca-Zn stabilizer and comprising:

[0013] - 100 parts of calcium and zinc salt of an epoxidated fatty acid;

[0014] - 5-7 parts of a polyol catalyst;

[0015] - 8-12 parts of an epoxide plasticizer;

[0016] - 2-4 parts of an organic phosphite auxiliary antioxidant;

[0017] - 1-2 parts of a [3-diketone;

[0018] - 10-13 parts of a zeolite;

[0019] - 12-15 parts of a hydrotalcite;

[0020] - 0.5-2 parts of an aminocrotonate; and

[0021] - 0.51 parts of an a-phenylindole.

[0022] Chinese patent application CN 102604271 A discloses a Mg-Zn composite thermal stabilizing composition for PVC articles, comprising:

[0023] - 10-60% by weight of magnesium compounds;

[0024] - 3-30% by weight of a zinc soap;

[0025] - 5-30% by weight of antioxidants;

[0026] - 5-20% by weight of [3-diketones;

[0027] - 0-20% by weight of lubricants; and

[0028] - 0-40% by weight of other organic substances.

[0029] European patent application EP3243869A1 discloses a composition for stabilizing halogen-containing polymers, comprising [3-diketones and a metallic compound selected from the group consisting of ZnO, Mg(OH)2 and Ca(OH)2.P023937WO-01 Notarbartolo & Gervasi S.p.A.

[0030] Despite the stabilizers described above, there is still the need to provide stabilizers capable to lower and / or retard colour variation upon PVC processing under thermal heating.

[0031] Therefore, a composition, which is compliant with the effective regulations, and which allows to obtain a high thermal stability for the polymer is yet to be developed.

[0270] The test was carried out as follows:

[0271] The PVC formulations obtained according to the invention were two-roll milled for 3 minutes at 190°C with a two-roll mill model MCC / N 150X300-E from Battaggion® to obtain 0.3-0.5 mm sheets. Rectangular samples (1.5x24 cm) were then cut from each sheet.

[0272] Samples were compression moulded at 180°C for 4 minutes with a Labtech Hydraulic laboratory bench top type LP20-B at 150 bar. Colour value b* was evaluated with a colorimeter X-Rite QA2000 according to ASTM D-1925. According to this rule, the lower is b* the better is the thermal stabilization.

[0273] This test of thermal stabilization was representative of the thermal stabilizationP023937WO-01 Notarbartolo & Gervasi S.p.A.

[0274] obtained in the processing of a halogen containing polymer, as it was performed after a two-roll mill calendering process and subsequent compression at high temperature. The test was carried out with formulation containing the ingredients of Table 1 added with the ingredients of the formulations shown in the following table 7. This set of tests was aimed at highlighting the superiority of [3-aminocrotonate having a molecular weight equal to or greater than 256 g / mol as measured summing up the mass of the atoms of the chemical structure.

[0275] Formulation 25 was the comparative example, comprising methyl-3-aminocrotonate (CAS 14205-39-1, MW=115.13 g / mol) (16) as a low-molecular weight [3-aminocrotonate and formulations 26 and 27 contained the stabilizing compositions according to the invention.

[0276] Table 7: high-temperature compression tests for formulations 25-27

[0277]

[0278] ** Alcamizer P93 (CAS 169314-88-9)

[0279] From the table 7, it is evident that the compositions according to the present invention (26, 27) showed a better thermal stability than the comparative composition (25), comprising a [3-aminocrotonate having a molecular weight lower than 256 g / mol as measured summing up the mass of the atoms of the chemical structure.
