Abstract
Description
[0001] A TRAFFIC RATED IN-GROUND CHAMBER
[0002] Technical Field of the Invention
[0003] The present invention relates generally to the field of in-ground chambers and more particularly to a traffic rated in-ground chamber while maintaining a sealed internal cavity for equipment such as geothermal manifold equipment.
[0004] Background to the Invention
[0005] Inspection chambers and their covers are subject to various regulations, including their load-bearing capacity, accessibility, safety and responsibility.
[0006] In-ground chambers are available, however, in-ground chambers, particularly those used to contain geothermal manifold equipment, are not traffic-rated (vehicular traffic), that is they are only for use in areas with little or no traffic (vehicular).
[0007] There is therefore a need for a traffic rated in-ground chamber which provides a sealed internal cavity for equipment.
[0008] Summary of the Invention
[0009] In one aspect, the invention resides in a traffic rated in-ground chamber with a sealed internal cavity, the chamber comprising
[0010] a primary chamber with a base wall, at least one side wall upstanding from the base wall to define an internal cavity and a primary lid to removably seal the internal cavity of the primary chamber;
[0011] a secondary lid frame positioned above the primary lid of the primary chamber and mounted above the primary chamber and
[0012] a secondary, load-rated lid provided on the secondary lid frame.
[0013] A traffic rated in-ground chamber with a sealed internal cavity with these features provides a primary chamber which can be sealed to protect equipment within but which itself, not necessarily load-rated and a secondary load-rated lid provided on a secondary lid frame which is not a part of the sealed internal cavity.
[0014] The traffic rated in-ground chamber may further comprise one or more structural members or assemblies (a riser ring) comprising an inner skin and outer skinwith an upper web extending between the inner skin and outer skin transversely to a stacking direction to form a U-shaped member or apparatus with an open bottom and a closed upper end.
[0015] Each of the inner skin and outer skin may comprise at least one removable portion, attached within the respective inner skin and outer skin by at least one line of weakness, the at least one removable portion within the respective inner skin and outer skin aligned to form an access opening through the inner skin and outer skin when removed.
[0016] The inground structural member or assembly may be designed to bear load. The member or assembly is particularly configured to bear load in a direction perpendicular to the upper web.
[0017] The structural member or assembly may be used as a riser ring for the traffic rated in-ground chamber. The structural member or assembly may be provided in any configuration, such as an elongate linear configuration or a corner configuration. One or more linear configurations may be connected to one or more corner configurations to form a riser ring. Alternatively, the member or assembly may be provided in a riser ring configuration having one or more side sections and / or one or more corner sections, but the chamber ring formed as single unit. If provided in a chamber ring configuration, the chamber ring may have any shape, although a circular or rectangular ring may be preferred.
[0018] In use, the structural member or assembly may be stackable above and / or below the primary chamber.
[0019] As mentioned above, it is preferred that the structural member or assembly is provided in a single piece, in a riser ring configuration. A riser ring may be provided above the primary chamber and / or below the primary chamber.
[0020] The structural member or assembly comprises an inner skin and an outer skin with an upper web extending between the inner skin and outer skin, transversely to a stacking direction to form a U-shaped member or apparatus with an open bottom and a closed upper end. Both the inner skin and outer skin preferably have a stepped free end provided at a lower end thereof. A laterally extending lip may be provided at the free end of one or both of the inner skin and outer skin. The laterally extending lip may preferably extend outwardly or away from the other of the skins. In a preferred embodiment, a laterally extending lip may be provided on one of the skins but not on the other.
[0021] Preferably, a laterally extending lip is provided on the outer skin but not on the inner skin. When provided on the outer skin, the laterally extending lip preferably extends away from the inner skin. The laterally extending lip may extend away from the outer skin in order to create a ridged outside surface to any in-ground chamber formed from the structural member or assembly or, if placed onto an upper end of a primary chamber, to positively locate an upper riser ring on an upper end of a primary chamber. It may assist with engaging with the ground in which the structural member or assembly is provided, once backfilled against the outer side of the outer skin.
[0022] The inner skin and outer skin may diverge away from each other as they extend from top to bottom. In one form, the inner skin may be substantially vertical, and the outer skin may be angled away from the inner skin from top to bottom. Alternatively, the inner skin and outer skin may be angled away from each other in opposite directions from top to bottom.
[0023] An inwardly stepped portion may be provided at an upper end of at least one, and preferably both of the inner skin and outer skin. In particular, a support shoulder may be provided at an upper end of the inner skin and the outer skin. The support shoulder will preferably extend inwardly toward the midline of the member or assembly, in other words, towards the other of the inner skin or outer skin.
[0024] A shaped depression and / or raised locating portion may be provided in at least one corner of the riser ring. The shaped depression may be formed at least partially into the inner skin / outer skin and / or the upper web extending between the inner skin and outer skin. The raised locating portion may extend upwardly from the inner skin / outer skin and / or the upper web extending between the inner skin and outer skin. The shaped depression and / or raised locating portion may positively locate a positioning assembly provided on the secondary lid frame to locate the secondary lid frame on the riser ring and / or secure the secondary lid frame against lateral movement relative to the riser ring. The shaped depressions, if provided, may be angled downwardly away from the central opening of the riser ring.
[0025] A drainage structure may be provided in association with any shaped depression in a corner of the structural member or assembly used as a riser ring. The drainage structure may correspond to a drainage system provided on a corner post of the primary chamber in an embodiment, as described below.
[0026] A particularly preferred form of riser ring is described in UK Patent Application No. 2319011.9.
[0027] A riser ring may be provided above the primary chamber. A riser ring may be provided below the primary chamber. The primary chamber may be supported by a riser ring on a bottom end thereof and support a riser ring on a top end thereof.
[0028] The central opening in any upper riser ring may be located about the primary lid. This may allow the primary lid of the primary chamber to be removed without obstruction from the upper riser ring.
[0029] The secondary lid frame may be positioned above the upper riser ring. This may position the secondary lid frame above the primary lid of the primary chamber and above the primary chamber (by the height of the riser ring). The secondary lid frame may be directly supported on and / or by the riser ring.
[0030] The traffic rated in-ground chamber comprises a primary chamber with a base wall, at least one side wall upstanding from the base wall to define an internal cavity and a primary lid to removably seal the primary chamber.
[0031] The base wall of the primary chamber may be located at the lower end of the primary chamber. The base wall may be planar. The base wall may extend completely across the lower end of the primary chamber to close the lower end of the primary chamber.
[0032] The primary chamber may comprise at least one side wall. The shape of the primary chamber may depend on the number of sidewalls provided. A circular or oval primary chamber may be formed from one sidewall. A rectangular primary chamber may comprise a pair of spaced apart end walls and a pair of spaced apart sidewalls. Inone embodiment, the end walls and sidewalls may be formed integrally with each other to form primary chamber with end walls and sidewalls formed as a single unit. Such a primary chamber may be formed by moulding in a single unit for example.
[0033] The at least one sidewall may be substantially planar from a lower end (to which the base wall is attached or formed) and an upper end. The at least one sidewall may be angled inwardly at an acute angle from lower end to upper end.
[0034] The at least one sidewall may be corrugated over the length of the sidewall / endwall.
[0035] The at least one sidewall may be provided with one or more strengthening or bracing portions or member. One or more ribs or bracing members may extend from the at least one sidewall inwardly toward a centre of the primary chamber. The ribs or bracing members may be planar. The ribs or bracing members may extend substantially perpendicularly to the portion of the at least one sidewall from which they extend. The ribs or bracing members may extend from the upper side of the base wall to an underside of an upper web. This may support the upper web and increase the load which can be borne by the primary chamber. A number of ribs or bracing members may be spaced over the length of the sidewall / endwall.
[0036] Each at least one sidewall may have an upper web extending inwardly from the side wall, transversely to a stacking direction. The upper web may extend from the upper end of the at least one sidewall. The upper web may be unitary with the at least one sidewall. An underside of the upper web may be supported by at least one rib or bracing member extending from the upper side of the base wall to an underside of an upper web. The upper web may be angled downwardly, inwardly toward the central opening.
[0037] The primary chamber of this configuration may be designed to bear load. The primary chamber is particularly configured to bear load in a direction perpendicular to the upper web but it will also bear load(s) in other directions.
[0038] The primary chamber may be provided with sidewalls in any configuration, such as an elongate linear configuration or a corner configuration. One or more linear configurations may be connected to one or more corner configurations to form theprimary chamber. Alternatively, the primary chamber may be provided in a unitary configuration having one or more side sections and / or one or more corner sections, but the primary chamber formed as single unit. If provided in a unitary configuration, the primary chamber may have any shape, although a rectangular primary chamber may be preferred.
[0039] In use, the primary chamber may be stackable above and / or below a riser ring. In one embodiment, the primary chamber may be provided between an upper riser ring and a lower riser ring.
[0040] The at least one sidewall of the primary chamber may have a free end provided at a lower terminal end thereof. The free end may be provided outside the base wall. A stepped portion may be provided adjacent to the terminal free end of the at least one side wall of the primary chamber. The stepped portion may be stepped outwardly, away from the centre of the primary chamber. The stepped portion may allow the primary chamber to be positioned relative to a riser ring, to positively locate the primary chamber on the riser ring. The stepped portion may have a support shoulder extending outwardly away from the centre of the primary chamber. The support shoulder may abut an upper side of the base wall. A depending skirt or lip may be provided from an outer end of the support shoulder and terminating at a lower terminal end. If more than one sidewall is provided, each sidewall may have configuration such as this provided at a lower end thereof.
[0041] The primary chamber may have a central opening defined in an upper end thereof. The central opening may be removably sealed by the primary lid. The central opening may be defined on an inner end of the upper web. A primary lid seating configuration may be provided at an inner end of the upper web extending from each sidewall.
[0042] The primary lid seating configuration may be continuous about the central opening. The primary lid seating configuration may comprise an upstand provided continuously about the central opening. The upstand may be provided as an inner wall of a circumferential gutter or depression provided about the central opening. The gutter or depression may be provided as a part of a stepped formation provided at an inner end of the upper web extending from each sidewall. The stepped formation may be stepped downwardly toward the centre of the primary chamber. This may allow the primary lid to be received in position on the primary chamber with the upper surface of the primary lid approximately coplanar with the upper web.
[0043] The stepped formation may comprise any number of steps. In one embodiment, a first step may be provided at a first height below the upper web. The first step may be continuous about the central opening. A second step may be provided at a height below the first step and a second height below the upper web which is greater than the first height. The second step may be continuous about the central opening. The upstand may be provided at an inner side of the second step. This may define a gutter or depression between the second step and the upstand. When the primary lid is fitted, an outer wall of the primary lid may form a gutter or depression with the first step.
[0044] The first step may be angled downwardly towards at least one corner of the primary chamber.
[0045] A sealing assembly, perhaps in the form of a gasket may be provided in association with the primary lid seating configuration. Alternatively, a sealing assembly, perhaps in the form of a gasket may be provided in association with an outer portion of the primary lid. The sealing assembly may be continuous about the central opening to seal the primary lid to the primary chamber.
[0046] An enlarged area may be provided in one or more of the corners of the primary lid seating configuration. The enlarged area may be provided at the level of the second step and be coplanar and continuous therewith. The enlarged area may extend through the first step and at least partially into the upper web in the one or more corners. The enlarged area may be angled downwardly into the corner of the primary chamber. A drainage opening may be provided at the outer end of the enlarged area. An enlarged area may be provided in each corner.
[0047] A primary lid securing assembly may be provided in each enlarged area. In one form, the primary lid securing assembly may be provided as an annular boss, upstanding from the enlarged area. The annular boss may engage a fastener which also engages theprimary lid to secure the primary lid to the primary chamber. In one form, the annular boss may be internally threaded to engage an externally threaded fastener. A primary lid securing assembly may be provided in each corner.
[0048] A downwardly depending wall may extend from the inner end of the second step. The downwardly depending wall may be continuous about the central opening.
[0049] The primary chamber may have a corner post provided in each corner thereof. The corner post may be formed integrally with the sidewalls of the primary chamber. The corner post may be hollow. The corner post may be formed between the outer wall of the sidewall in the corner, a drainage channel corner wall sidewall on each side and an inner corner wall. The hollow interior of the corner post may be sealed from the internal volume of the primary chamber. The corner posts may have internal bracing provided so that the corner posts form part of the load bearing structure of the primary chamber.
[0050] The drainage opening in the enlarged area may lead to the hollow interior of the corner post. A lower opening may be provided at a lower end of the corner post. The lower opening may be formed by simply not providing the base wall in the corner posts. In other words, the base wall may be provided at the bottom of the primary chamber, but not in the corner posts. The lower opening of the corner posts may align with or be positioned above or within the shaped depression provided in at least one corner of a riser ring, if the primary chamber is provided on a riser ring. This may direct any water which enters the corner post through the drainage opening to an outside of the sealed volume of the primary chamber, downwardly through the corner post and outward away from the chamber.
[0051] The primary chamber may have one or more handles provided thereon. The handles may be formed into or onto an outer side of the at least one sidewall. In one form, a handle may be formed by providing an enlarged lip or similar onto an outer side of the at least one sidewall. The enlarged lip may be an inverted U shape. The handles may be formed onto an outer side of the corner posts. The handles may be formed adjacent to a lower end of the corner posts. A handle may be provided onto an outer side of each corner post. The primary chamber may comprise one or more drainage arrangements. The drainage arrangements may be provided to expel / drain any liquid (which will usually be water in the use application) build up from an upper side of the primary chamber outside the sealed volume within the primary chamber. The drainage arrangements may be provided inside the at least one sidewall of the primary chamber but be separated from the sealed volume within the primary chamber.
[0052] The one or more drainage arrangements may comprise a drainage opening at an upper side thereof. The drainage opening may be provided in a low point of an upper side of the at least one sidewall and / or the upper web. The drainage opening may be provided in the stepped formation provided at an inner end of the upper web extending from each sidewall. This may promote downward movement of any liquid to an opening under gravity and then drainage through the drainage opening.
[0053] The one or more drainage arrangements may include at least one hollow post or similar. The hollow post may be at least partially defined by an inner surface of the at least one sidewall of the primary chamber. One or more other post walls may be provided to form a hollow volume with the drainage opening at an upper end thereof. The one or more other post walls may segregate (physically separate and seal) the hollow volume of the post from the sealed volume within the primary chamber.
[0054] A lower opening may be provided from each hollow post. The lower opening may allow any liquid entering the hollow post from above, to drain from a lower side of the primary chamber. The lower opening may be directed laterally outwardly away from the sealed volume within the primary chamber.
[0055] A primary lid is provided to removably seal the primary chamber. The primary lid may be substantially planar. The primary lid may be sized to fit over the central opening in the primary chamber, within the upper web.
[0056] At least one fastening point may be provided on the primary lid. The number of fastening points may be dictated by the number of corners on the primary chamber and / or primary lid. For example, where the primary lid is rectangular, four fastening points may be provided, one fastening point in each corner of the primary lid. The type of fastening point may also be dependent on the fastening method used to attach theprimary lid to the primary chamber and seal them together. In one form, an elongate threaded fastener may be used through an opening in the primary lid (with a sealing washer or similar) to engage with a corresponding internally threaded boss or captive nut provided on the primary chamber.
[0057] The primary lid may be a shaped or contoured upper surface, curved or angled downwardly towards one or more drainage openings, whether provided at least one of the corners of the primary chamber or elsewhere. One or more angled gutters or similar may be provided in or into an upper surface of the primary lid. A main longitudinal gutter may be provided. One or more transverse gutters may be provided extending from the main longitudinal gutter to a drainage opening. A corner gutter may be provided extending from the main longitudinal gutter to each corner of the primary lid. The gutters may have any shape to convey and preferably direct water or liquid to the corners, such as a V-shape or U-shape.
[0058] The primary lid may have a configuration similar to a pitched roof on a building, but with a less angled slope. The regions on the upper side of the primary lid separated by the gutters may include ribbing or similar to guide liquid to one of the gutters on the primary lid, or to the gutter or depression provided about a periphery of the primary lid (the stepped portion).
[0059] A depending lip or similar may be provided about a perimeter on the underside of the primary lid. In use, the depending lip may be received at least partially in the gutter or depression of the second step. The depending lip may contact a gasket or seal provided on the primary chamber or be provided adjacent to a gasket or seal provided on the primary lid.
[0060] The underside of the primary lid may be provided with one or more reinforcing arrangements or structures. A plurality of reinforcing ribs may be provided extending from an underside of the primary lid.
[0061] The traffic rated in-ground chamber comprises a secondary lid frame positioned above the primary lid of the primary chamber and mounted above the primary chamber.
[0062] The secondary lid frame may have at least one formation to secure against the uppermost edge of the primary chamber and / or riser ring. The at least one formationmay engage with or abut a corresponding formation provided on an upper edge of the primary chamber and / or riser ring.
[0063] The secondary lid frame may be manufactured from a number of elongate members attached together. The secondary lid frame can have any size and any shape, generally corresponding to the size and shape of the primary chamber and / or riser ring relative to which it will fit. The secondary lid frame may be a perimeter frame.
[0064] Each frame member may have an L-shaped cross-sectional shape. An L-shaped cross-sectional shape may be formed by provision of a pair of planar portions. The cross-sectional shape may be consistent over the length of the frame members. The frame members may be connected or joined together at their respective ends to form a perimeter frame. Any connection method can be used. The ends of the frame members may be square cut or mitre cut.
[0065] The secondary lid frame may be provided with one or more grouting formations provided to enhance the engagement of the secondary lid frame with a mortar bed surrounding an upper portion of the primary chamber and / or riser ring, if provided.
[0066] The grouting formations may take the form of grouting bars. The grouting bars may have any shape. The grouting bars may have any configuration. Any number of grouting bars may be provided. The grouting formations may extend outwardly from the secondary lid frame in order to better engage the mortar bed.
[0067] A grouting formation may be provided at at least one corner of the secondary lid frame. Preferably, a grouting formation is provided at all of the corners of the corners of the secondary lid frame.
[0068] In an embodiment, a grouting bar may be provided in a generally V-shaped or U-shaped configuration. In this form, the grouting bar will normally be a single length of bar, typically metal. The bar is usually bent to the desired shape. One end of the grouting bar is normally fixed to a secondary lid frame member on one side of the secondary lid frame and the other end of the grouting bar is normally fixed to a secondary lid frame member on a second side of the secondary lid frame. The grouting bar will then straddle a corner of the secondary lid frame.
[0069] The grouting bar may have any cross-sectional shape. The at least one formation is typically provided relative to an underside of the cover or cover frame. The at least one second formation may extend from an underside of the secondary lid frame (if provided as an extension) or into / through the underside of the secondary lid frame (if provided as an opening).
[0070] The at least one formation may have any form provided that it corresponds to the corresponding formation on the primary chamber and / or riser ring to secure the secondary lid frame relative to the primary chamber and / or riser ring.
[0071] The at least one formation may be provided as an extension, such as a tab, pin, post, plate or similar provided on the secondary lid frame and configured to be received in a corresponding opening or depression provided on the uppermost edge of the primary chamber and / or riser ring. The at least one formation may be provided as an opening or depression provided on the secondary lid frame and configured to receive a corresponding an extension, such as a tab, pin, post, plate or similar provided on the uppermost edge of the primary chamber and / or riser ring. Once juxtaposed correctly he at least one formation and the corresponding formation may limit the lateral movement of the secondary lid frame relative to the primary chamber and / or riser ring.
[0072] The at least one formation may extend from the secondary lid frame in any direction. The at least one second formation may extend laterally from the secondary lid frame, preferably to an external side of the cover or cover frame. The at least one second formation may extend downwardly from the secondary lid frame.
[0073] The at least one formation may correspond to the shaped depression and / or raised locating portion provided in at least one corner of the riser ring to secure the cover relative to the in-ground chamber against at least lateral movement.
[0074] The secondary lid frame may be smaller than the external dimension of the primary chamber and / or riser ring relative to which it is mounted. The internal dimension of the secondary lid frame may be sized to allow passage of the primary lid therethrough.
[0075] As mentioned above, the secondary lid frame typically does not extend laterally beyond the extremities of the primary chamber and / or riser ring. The at least oneformation may extend laterally beyond the extremities of the primary chamber and / or riser ring.
[0076] The underside of the secondary lid frame may be directly supported, preferably about the perimeter of the secondary lid frame, by an upper surface of the primary chamber and / or riser ring (apart from the openings or depressions where these are provided as the at least one first formation).
[0077] The traffic rated in-ground chamber comprises a secondary, load-rated lid provided on the secondary lid frame.
[0078] The secondary, load-rated lid may be formed as a single unit. The secondary, load-rated lid may be sized to be closely received within the secondary lid frame. The secondary lid may be approximately the same height as the secondary lid frame to provide a flush finish.

[0097] Figure 20 is an isometric view of the chamber shown in Figure 1 configured as an in-ground geothermal manifold chamber.Figure 21 is a sectional view of the configuration shown in Figure 20 along line H-H.
[0098] An example of a traffic rated in-ground chamber 10 with a sealed internal cavity is illustrated in the accompanying Figures. The in-ground chamber 10 illustrated comprises a primary chamber 11 with a base wall 12, a side wall 13 upstanding from the base wall 12 to define an internal cavity 60 and a primary lid 14 to removably seal the primary chamber 11. A secondary lid frame 15 is positioned above the primary lid 14 of the primary chamber 11 and mounted above the primary chamber 1. A secondary, load-rated lid 16 is provided on the secondary lid frame 15.
[0099] As illustrated, the traffic rated in-ground chamber 10 may comprise an upper riser ring 17 and a lower riser rings 18. Each riser ring illustrated comprises an inner skin and outer skin with an upper web extending between the inner skin and outer skin transversely to a stacking direction to form a U-shaped member or apparatus with an open bottom and a closed upper end. Each riser ring 17, 18 is designed to bear load, particularly in a direction perpendicular to the upper web.
[0100] As shown, each riser ring 17, 18 has is generally rectangular with four side sections and four corner sections formed as single unit. In use, the upper riser ring 17 is provided stacked above the primary chamber and the lower riser ring is provided below the primary chamber, with the primary chamber stacked thereon.
[0101] As seen best in the sectional views, both the inner skin and outer skin have a stepped free end provided at a lower end thereof. A laterally extending lip may be provided at the free end of both of the inner skin and outer skin, extending away from the other of the skins. A depending wall is provided from the lateral end of each laterally extending lip to form the stepped free end. As shown, the stepped free ends assist with seating the upper riser ring 17 on the primary chamber 11. The inner skin and outer skin of the riser rings 17, 18 diverge away from each other as they extend from top to bottom.
[0102] As shown in Figure 15 in particular, a shaped depression 19 is provided in each corner of the riser ring 17, 18. The shaped depression 19 may positively locate a grouting bar provided on the secondary lid frame 15 therein to locate the secondary lidframe 15 on the upper riser ring 17 and / or secure the secondary lid frame 19 against lateral movement relative to the upper riser ring 17.
[0103] The central opening in the upper riser ring 17 is located about the primary lid 14 as shown in Figure 15. This allows the primary lid 14 of the primary chamber 11 to be removed without obstruction from the upper riser ring 17.
[0104] As shown, the secondary lid frame 15 is positioned above the upper riser ring 17. This may position the secondary lid frame 15 above the primary lid 14 of the primary chamber 11 and above the primary chamber 11 (by the height of the riser ring 17). The secondary lid frame 15 is directly supported on and / or by the upper riser ring 17.
[0105] The base wall 12 of the primary chamber 11 is located at the lower end of the primary chamber 11. The base wall 12 shown is planar and extends completely across the lower end of the primary chamber 11 to close the lower end of the primary chamber 11 and partially form the cavity with the side wall 13.
[0106] The primary chamber 11 may comprise at least one side wall 13. In the embodiment illustrated, the side wall has side wall portions and end wall portions formed integrally with each other to form a primary chamber 11 with a single sidewall 13 formed as a unit. Such a primary chamber 11 may be formed by moulding in a single unit, for example and then fixing the base wall 12 to close the lower end of the primary chamber 11.
[0107] The sidewall 13 is substantially planar from a lower end (to which the base wall 12 is attached or formed) to an upper end and angled inwardly at an acute angle from lower end to upper end. As shown in Figure 7, the sidewall 13 is corrugated over its length. This may increase the strength or load that can be borne.
[0108] The side wall 13 of the illustrated embodiment is provided with strengthening or bracing portions as shown in Figure 8, spaced over the length of the side wall 13. A plurality of ribs 20 may extend from an inner surface of the sidewall 13 inwardly toward a centre of the primary chamber 11. The illustrated ribs 20 are planar and extend substantially perpendicularly to the portion of the sidewall 13 from which they extend. The ribs 20 extend from the upper side of the base wall 12 to an underside of an upperweb 21 provided on the side wall 13. This may support the upper web 21 and increase the load which can be borne by the primary chamber 11.
[0109] The upper web 21 extends inwardly from the side wall 13, transversely to a stacking direction, from the upper end of the side wall 13. In the illustrated unitary embodiment, the upper web 21 is unitary with the side wall 13. An underside of the upper web 21 is supported by the ribs 20 extending from the upper side of the base wall 12 to an underside of an upper web 21. The upper web 21 may be angled downwardly toward the central opening of the primary chamber 11.
[0110] As shown (perhaps best in Figure 8), the sidewall 13 of the primary chamber 11 has a free end provided at a lower terminal end thereof. The free end may be provided outside the base wall 12.
[0111] A stepped portion may be provided adjacent to the terminal free end of the side wall 13 of the primary chamber 11. The stepped portion is stepped outwardly, away from the centre of the primary chamber 11. The stepped portion may allow the primary chamber 11 to be positioned relative to the lower riser ring 18, to positively locate the primary chamber 11 on the lower riser ring 18. The stepped portion has a support shoulder extending outwardly away from the centre of the primary chamber 11 to abut an upper side of the base wall 12. A depending skirt or lip is provided from an outer end of the support shoulder and terminating at a lower terminal end. In the illustrated embodiment, this configuration extends about a lower end of the sidewall and allows the mounting of the base wall 12 to the sidewall 13 to form the primary chamber 11.
[0112] The primary chamber 11 has a central opening defined in an upper end thereof which is removably sealed by the primary lid 14. The central opening is defined by an inner end of the upper web 21.
[0113] As shown in Figure 9, a seating configuration is provided at an inner end of the upper web 21 extending from each sidewall 13 to seat the primary lid 14.
[0114] The seating configuration is continuous about the central opening. In the illustrated embodiment, the seating configuration comprises an upstand provided continuously about the central opening against which an edge of the primary lid 14 abuts when fitted and secured. The upstand 22 may be provided as an inner wall of acircumferential gutter or depression provided about the central opening. The gutter or depression may be provided as a part of a stepped formation provided at an inner end of the upper web 21 extending from each sidewall 13. The stepped formation may be stepped downwardly toward the centre of the primary chamber 11. This may allow the primary lid 14 to be received in position on the primary chamber 11 with the upper surface of the primary lid 14 approximately coplanar with the upper web 21 as shown in Figures 8 and 9 in particular.
[0115] The stepped formation may comprise any number of steps. In the embodiment illustrated, a first step 23 is provided at a first height below the upper web 21. The first step 23 is continuous about the central opening. A second step 24 is provided at a height below the first step 23 and a second height below the upper web 21 which is greater than the first height. The second step 24 is also continuous about the central opening. An upstand 25 is provided at an inner side of the second step 24. This defines a gutter between upstand 22 and upstand 25. When the primary lid 14 is fitted, an outer wall of the primary lid 14 forms a gutter with the first step 23.
[0116] The first step 23 may be angled downwardly towards a corner of the primary chamber 11.
[0117] A sealing assembly, for example, a gasket may be provided in association with the seating configuration. Alternatively, a sealing assembly may be provided in association with an outer portion of the primary lid 14. The sealing assembly may be continuous about the central opening to seal the primary lid 14 to the primary chamber 11.
[0118] An enlarged area (not numbered) is provided in the corners of the primary lid seating configuration. The enlarged area in the illustrated embodiment is provided at the level of the second step 24 and be coplanar and continuous therewith. The enlarged area extends through the first step 23 and at least partially into the upper web 21 in the corners of the primary chamber 11. The enlarged area is angled downwardly into the corner of the primary chamber 11, away from the central opening. A downwardly depending wall 28 extends from the inner end of the second step 24. The downwardly depending wall 28 is continuous about the central opening. In the illustrated embodiment, a drainage opening 26 is provided at the outer end of the enlarged area in each corner.
[0119] An annular boss 27, upstanding from the enlarged area is also provided in each enlarged area to secure the primary lid 14 to the primary chamber 11. The annular boss 27 shown engages a fastener (shown as a captive bolt on the primary lid in Figure 5) which also engages the primary lid 14 to secure the primary lid 14 to the primary chamber 11. In the illustrated form, the annular boss 27 is internally threaded to engage an externally threaded fastener.
[0120] As best seen in the section views in Figures 8, 11, 16 and 17, the primary chamber has a corner post 29 provided in each corner thereof. The corner post 29 is formed integrally with the side wall 13 of the primary chamber 11. The corner post 29 is hollow. The corner post 29 is formed between the outer wall of the sidewall 13 in the corner, a drainage channel corner wall sidewall 30 on each side, and an inner corner wall 31. The hollow interior of the corner post 29 is sealed from the internal cavity of the primary chamber 11. The corner posts may have internal bracing (as shown in Figure 18) provided so that the corner posts 29 form part of the load bearing structure of the primary chamber 11.
[0121] As shown in Figure 16, the drainage opening 26 in the enlarged area leads to the hollow interior of the corner post 29. A lower opening is provided at a lower end of the corner post 29 by simply not providing the base wall 12 in the corner posts 29. In other words, in the illustrated embodiment, the base wall 12 is provided at the bottom of the primary chamber 11 , but not in the corner posts 29. The lower opening of the corner posts 29 aligns with or be positioned above or within the shaped depression 19 provided in the corners of the lower riser ring 18. This may direct any water which enters the corner post 29 through the drainage opening 26 to an outside of the sealed cavity 60 of the primary chamber 11, downwardly through the corner post 29 and outward away from the chamber 11 through the drainage structure 32 provided in association with the shaped depression 19 in a corner of the lower riser ring 18. As mentioned, the drainage is through the corner posts, outside the sealed cavity 60 of the primary chamber 11.The illustrated primary chamber 11 has handles 33 provided thereon. The handles 33 of the illustrated embodiment are formed into or onto an outer side of the sidewall 13 of the corner posts 29. As shown, a handle 33 may be formed by providing an enlarged lip or similar onto an outer side of the corner post 29. The enlarged lip may be an inverted U shape. The handles 33 are formed adjacent to a lower end of the corner posts 29.
[0122] As shown, the primary lid 14 is substantially planar but with a convex upper wall (as best shown in Figure 10). The primary lid 14 is sized to fit over the central opening in the primary chamber 11, within the upper web 21.
[0123] The number of fastening points are provided on the primary lid 14. Where the primary lid is rectangular, as in the illustrated embodiment, four fastening points are provided, one fastening point in each corner of the primary lid 14. The type of fastening point is also be dependent on the fastening method used to attach the primary lid 14 to the primary chamber 11 and seal them together. In the illustrated form, an elongate threaded bolt 36 is used through an opening in the primary lid 14 (with a sealing washer or similar) to engage with the corresponding internally threaded boss 27 provided on the primary chamber 11.
[0124] The primary lid 14 shown (best in Figure 10) has contoured upper surface, curved downwardly towards the corners of the primary chamber 11. A main longitudinal gutter 34 provided. A corner gutter 35 is provided extending from the main longitudinal gutter 34 to each corner of the primary lid 14. The gutters 34, 35 are shaped to convey and direct water or liquid to the corners of the primary lid 14 and then into the corners of the primary chamber 11 to drain through the corner posts as described above.
[0125] As shown in Figure 5, the primary lid 14 may have a configuration similar to a pitched roof on a building, but with a less angled slope. The regions on the upper side of the primary lid 14 separated by the gutters 34, 35 may include ribbing 37 or similar to guide liquid to one of the gutters on the primary lid 14, or to the gutter or depression provided about a periphery of the primary lid (the stepped portion).A depending lip 38 is provided about a perimeter on the underside of the primary lid 14, as shown in Figure 9. In use as shown, the depending lip 38 is received at least partially in the gutter of the second step 24. The depending lip may contact a gasket or seal provided on the primary chamber 11 or be provided adjacent to a gasket or seal provided on the primary lid 14.
[0126] The underside of the primary lid 14 is provided with a plurality of reinforcing ribs 39 extending from an underside of the primary lid 14.
[0127] The secondary lid frame 15 shown in Figure 1, is manufactured from a number of elongate members attached together. The secondary lid frame can have any size and any shape, generally corresponding to the size and shape of the primary chamber 11 and / or upper riser ring 17 relative to which it will fit.
[0128] The secondary lid frame 15 may be a perimeter frame to receive the secondary lid 16 thereinto. Each frame member of the secondary lid frame 15 illustrated has an L-shaped cross-sectional shape formed by provision of a pair of planar portions perpendicular to each other.
[0129] The secondary lid frame 15 has a grouting formation 40 provided at each corner to secure against the uppermost edge of the primary chamber 11 and / or upper riser ring 17. Each grouting formation 40 engages with or abuts a corresponding shaped depression 19 provided on an upper edge of the upper riser ring 17. The grouting formations may also enhance the engagement of the secondary lid frame 15 with a mortar bed surrounding an upper portion of the primary chamber 11 and / or riser ring 17, if provided.
[0130] As shown in Figure 1 (and others), the grouting formations 40 extend outwardly from the secondary lid frame 15 in order to better engage the mortar bed.
[0131] As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the secondary lid frame 15 may be smaller than the external dimension of the primary chamber 11 and / or riser ring 17 relative to which it is mounted. The internal dimension of the secondary lid frame 15 may be sized to allow passage of the primary lid 14 therethrough. The underside of the secondary lid frame 15 is directly supported about the perimeter of the secondary lid frame 15 by an upper surface of the primary chamber 11 and / or upper riser ring 17 as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
[0132] The secondary, load-rated lid 16 shown in the Figures is formed as a single unit. The secondary, load-rated lid 16 is sized to be closely received within the secondary lid frame 15. The secondary lid 16 may be approximately the same height as the secondary lid frame 15 to provide a flush finish.
[0133] The secondary lid 16 may be load-rated. The secondary lid 16 may itself be load rated to comply with appropriate requirements. The secondary lid 16 may for example meet the requirements of BS EN124: 1994 (B125).
[0134] The secondary lid 16 may be of any type but is a concrete infill lid in the embodiment illustrated. The secondary lid 16 may be lockable or securable relative to the secondary lid frame 15 or simply retained in place by its weight. Lifting holds 41 may be provided in the secondary lid 16 such as those shown in Figures 1 and 2.
[0135] The one or more embodiments are described above by way of example only. Many variations are possible without departing from the scope of protection afforded by the appended claims.
