[0001] HERBICIDAL COMPOSITION COMPRISING OXADIAZON,BENSULFURON-METHYL AND PENOXSULAM

[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a field of agrochemicals, particularly to herbicidal compositions. More specifically, the present invention relates to a stable synergistic herbicidal composition comprising A) a compound of Formula I, i.e., 5-tert-butyl-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; B) a compound of Formula II, i.e., methyl 2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl] methyl]benzoate or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; and C) a compound of Formula III, i.e., 2-(2,2-difluoroethoxy)-N-(5, 8 -dimethoxyfl, 2, 4]tri azolof l,5-c]pyrimidin-2-yl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzene-l -sulfonamide or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters or its derivatives for effective control of various weeds. The present invention also relates to a process for preparation of such herbicidal composition for synergistic and efficacious control of various undesirable weeds.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] In the field of agriculture and crop management, numerous factors influence crop establishment, growth, productivity, and final yield. Among these, infestation by weeds and other undesirable vegetation remains one of the most significant and persistent causes of yield loss. Such unwanted plants compete with cultivated crops for essential resources including nutrients, water, light, and space, thereby adversely affecting crop vigor, development, and productivity. In addition, certain weeds may exert allelopathic effects that further impair the growth and health of desirable plant species.

[0006] Effective management of weeds and undesirable plants is therefore critical from both agronomic and economic perspectives to achieve optimal crop performance and sustainable agricultural production. Over the years, a wide range of herbicidal active ingredients and formulations have been developed and deployed, either alone or in combination, to control weeds across different cropping systems. However, the extensive and repeated use of herbicides has resulted in the weed populations exhibiting reduced sensitivity or resistance to existing herbicidal treatments. To address resistance concerns and to improve the breadth and durability of weed control, combinations of multiple herbicidal actives have been proposed in the prior art. Such combinations are intended to enhance efficacy by targeting weeds through different biochemical pathways.

[0007] Nevertheless, many existing herbicidal compositions and mixtures suffer from significant drawbacks. These include limited effectiveness across different weed growth stages, inadequate control of mixed weed flora, increased selection pressure leading to resistance development, and undesirable effects on crops such as phytotoxicity, leaf discoloration, growth suppression, or inconsistent crop safety.

[0008] References may be made to CN 104186502, which discloses herbicidal combinations comprising Compound of Formula I and Compound of Formula III, and to CN107517987, which discloses a pesticide composition containing Compound of Formula III, flufenacet, and Compound of Formula I. Further, such prior-art compositions are associated with drawbacks including sub-optimal control across different weed growth stages, and formulation or performance limitations that restrict their ability to deliver stable, broad-spectrum, and durable weed control. In addition, certain prior-art formulations lack physical and chemical stability, require higher application doses, or have higher environmental impact and fail to provide sufficient desired activity. Consequently, these market-available products fail to fully address the need for a stable, synergistic, and resistance-mitigating herbicidal composition.

[0009] Accordingly, there remains a clear and unmet need in the art for an improved herbicidal composition that overcomes the limitations of existing products. In particular, there is a need for a stable and synergistic herbicidal composition that provides enhanced and broad-spectrum weed control, reduces the likelihood of resistance development, minimizes phytotoxic effects on cultivated plants, and delivers consistent performance at reduced application rates.

[0010] The present invention addresses these needs by providing a novel, stable, and synergistic herbicidal composition comprising mutually compatible active ingredients within defined weight percentage ranges. The composition is designed to target multiple biological pathways in weeds, thereby increasing control efficacy and reducing the probability of resistance development. The synergisticinteraction among the actives enables effective weed management at lower dosages, improved residual activity, and enhanced crop safety. The composition further contributes to improved plant health and yield potential, reduced labor inputs, lower environmental impact, and overall costeffectiveness for the end user, while being environmentally sustainable.

[0011] Although individual herbicidal active ingredients belonging to different chemical classes are known in the art, their standalone use or simple admixture has not adequately resolved the longstanding challenges associated with effective, durable, and safe weed management. Herbicides acting through a single biochemical pathway frequently exhibit limited spectrum of control and are prone to resistance development upon repeated use. Even where combinations of herbicides have been proposed, many prior-art formulations fail to deliver true synergistic efficacy, increased phytotoxicity risk, higher application doses, or formulation instability.

[0012] The present invention represents a significant technical advancement by providing a stable and synergistic herbicidal composition comprising a carefully selected combination of active ingredients having distinct yet complementary biochemical modes of action. In particular, the composition integrates a phenyloxadiazolone herbicide acting through disruption of cell membrane integrity and protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibition, together with one or more pyrimidinyl sulfonylurea and triazolopyrimidine herbicides acting through inhibition of acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS). This strategic combination enables simultaneous interference with multiple essential physiological and metabolic processes in undesirable plants.

[0013] The synergistic effect in the herbicidal composition of the present invention, enables the use of reduced amounts of active ingredients, thereby lowering chemical load, minimizing phytotoxic risk to desirable plants, and improving environmental compatibility.

[0014] Further, the actives selected for the present invention are mutually compatible, allowing formulation into a stable composition that maintains physical integrity, uniformity, and biological performance over time. The inventive composition provides effective weed suppression without causing adverse effects such as crop injury, discoloration, or growth retardation, and contributes to improved plant vigor and yield potential. The enhanced efficacy and selectivity also translateinto operational benefits, including reduced need for repeated applications, lower labor input, and improved cost efficiency for end users.

[0015] A compound of Formula I, i.e., 5-tert-butyl-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-l,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one is a phenyloxadiazolone herbicide and used to control bindweed and some annual broad-leaved weeds. [0017] Moreover, a compound of Formula III, i.e., 2-(2,2-difluoroethoxy)-N-(5,8-dimethoxy[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidin-2-yl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzene-1-sulfonamide is a triazolopyrimidine herbicide used on rice crops for the control of broad-leaved weeds, aquatic weeds and certain grasses. It pertains to inhibition of plant amino acid synthesis due to inhibition of acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS). It is used for controlling sedges, broad-leaved weeds including loosestrife, chickweed and clover, aquatic weeds including water plaintain and water hyacinth, certain grasses including barnyard grass, young watergrass, annual blackgrass and buckwheat, Echinochloa spp., Ludwigia spp., found in rice, cereals, orchards, olives, chicory, lawns, etc.

[0018] In view of the drawbacks associated with the prior arts, there exists a need to provide a stable synergistic herbicidal composition for synergistic and effective control of weeds. The present invention satisfies the existing needs, as well as others, and generally overcomes the deficienciesfound in the prior art. The present invention composition is synergistic, efficacious, environmentally friendly, simple to formulate, stable and is safe to use. The inventive composition thus represents a meaningful advancement in the field of herbicidal technology and provides a practical and effective solution to persistent weed management challenges.

[0019] Thus, an herbicidal composition of the present invention aims to overcome the problems of the prior art and provides a stable synergistic herbicidal composition comprising bioactive amounts of A) Compound of Formula I, i.e., 5-tert-butyl-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)- 1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; B) Compound of Formula II, i.e., methyl 2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl] methyl]benzoate or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters and derivatives; and C) Compound of Formula III, i.e., 2-(2,2-difluoroethoxy)-N-(5,8-dimethoxy[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidin-2-yl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzene-1-sulfonamide or its agrochemically acceptable salts, esters or its derivatives.

[0186] In one embodiment, additives such as Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer or Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter is an organosilicone based powder adjuvant that can enhance the water absorption efficiency of hard-to-wet soils by increasing their water infiltration, drainage, water retention and hydrophilicity; tallow amine ethoxylate increases thebiocompatibility in environmental applications and help in the interactions of active ingredients; ammonium sulphate help is resistant to leaching and helps the crop to utilize nitrogen efficiently; urea clathrate provides superior wetting and spray retention properties and serves as an excellent nitrogen source for crops and epoxide soybean oil provides increased active ingredient uptake and improved rain fastness to the composition; and epoxide soybean oil provides increased active ingredient uptake and improved rain fastness to the composition. The said additives are stable and hygroscopic resulting in an efficient uptake and functioning.

[0187] In one embodiment of the present invention, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer has superspreading ability, it significantly lowers the surface tension of spray solutions, allowing them to spread uniformly across plant surfaces, including waxy or hard-to-wet leaves. This enhances the penetration and absorption of herbicides, leading to improved efficacy. Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer is especially effective in low-volume spray applications and helps increase rainfastness and reduce runoff. Its use supports more efficient herbicide delivery, often allowing for reduced application rates.

[0188] In one embodiment of the present invention, the inclusion of both Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter and tallow amine ethoxylate in a formulation significantly enhances its surface activity and delivery efficiency. Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer, a trisiloxane-based super-spreader, dramatically reduces surface tension, enabling rapid and uniform spreading of the solution across plant surfaces, even on waxy or water-repellent leaves. In synergy, tallow amine ethoxylate, a non-ionic surfactant, acts as a powerful wetting and penetration agent, improving the absorption of active ingredients into plant tissues. This combination ensures maximum bioavailability and performance of herbicidal actives.

[0189] In one embodiment of the present invention, ammonium sulphate particularly as a water conditioner and adjuvant. It helps improve the efficacy of herbicides, by binding with hard water cations such as calcium and magnesium that would otherwise reduce herbicidal absorption and activity. By preventing these ions from interacting with the active ingredient, ammonium sulphate enhances uptake into plant tissues. It may also act as a nitrogen source, supporting plant growth. In one embodiment of the present invention, Epoxide soybean oil, a bio-based plasticizer and solvent, improves formulation compatibility, reduces phytotoxicity, and enhances the dispersionof active compounds. Derived from renewable sources, both additives support sustainable agriculture by offering low toxicity, biodegradability, and improved formulation efficiency without compromising efficacy.

[0190] In one embodiment of the present invention, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer, tallow amine ethoxylate, ammonium sulphate, and epoxide soybean oil are additives used individually or in combination to enhance the performance of herbicidal formulations. Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer, a superspreading organosilicone surfactant, reduces surface tension and improves leaf coverage and penetration of active ingredients. Tallow amine ethoxylates, as non-ionic surfactants, aid in emulsification and enhance herbicide uptake. Ammonium sulphate serves as a water conditioner, preventing hard water ions from reducing herbicide efficacy, while also acting as a nitrogen source. Epoxide soybean oil, a biodegradable solvent and plasticizer, improves formulation stability, compatibility, and reduces phytotoxicity. Used alone or synergistically, these additives optimize spray performance, improve bioavailability of actives, and support sustainable and effective crop protection.

[0191] In one embodiment, additives such as urea clathrate, Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer or Siloxane Polyalkyleneoxide Copolymer super-wetter, tallow amine ethoxylate, ammonium sulphate, and epoxide soybean oil either alone or in combination thereof, present in the range of 0.001 - 20% by weight of the composition.

[0447] Evaluation of synergistic effect of herbicidal composition of the present invention

[0448] A synergistic effect of two or more products exists whenever the action of an active ingredient composition is greater than the sum of the actions of the individual components. Synergism was calculated by using Colby’s method (Weeds, vol. 15 No. 1 (Jan 1967), pp. 20-2.

[0449] The synergistic action expected for a given composition of two active components can be calculated as follows:

[0450] XY

[0451] E = (X + Y) - - 100The synergistic action expected for a given composition of three active components can be calculated as follows:

[0452] (XY+YZ+XZ) (XYZ)

[0453] E = (X + Y + Z) - - + - 100 10000

[0454] Where:

[0455] E represents expected percentage of herbicidal control for the composition of the two or three actives’ ingredients at defined doses (for example equal to x, y and z, respectively).

[0456] X is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula I) at a defined dose (equal to x).

[0457] Y is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula II) at a defined dose (equal to y).

[0458] Z is the percentage of herbicidal control observed by the compound (Compound of Formula III) at a defined dose (equal to z).

[0459] When the percentage of herbicidal control observed for the composition is greater than the expected percentage, there is a synergism effect.

[0460] Observed control (%)

[0461] Ratio = - Expected control (%)

[0462] Ratio of O / E > 1, synergism observed

[0463] The present invention is illustrated by way of examples; the examples are meant for illustrative purposes and should not be construed as limiting.

[0464] Experiment for Synergistic activity of stable synergistic herbicidal composition of present invention:

[0465] Example 1- Details of experiment on Rice crop:

[0466] Field experiment for synergistic activity of Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III for the control of Grassy Weed, Sedges (GW) & Broad Leaf Weed (BLW) in rice crop was conducted at farmer field in District- Karnal, Haryana.

[0467] To evaluate the synergistic effect, rice (Variety: IR 36) crop was sown in 5 m x 5 m plots maintaining 20 cm x 15 cm (row to row and plant to plant) distance with three replications and inRandomized Block Design (RBD). The treatments were applied as foliar application 2-5 leaves of weeds as early post-emergence by using knapsack sprayer fitted with flat fan nozzle in the form of SC formulation @ 2500 ml. / ha. Each active component was applied at recommended doses in different ternary and binary compositions. Solo components and market samples were also taken for comparison. [0505] T29 Untreated check -The treatments T1 to T28 were used as foliar application whereas no treatment was done for T29 control treatment only water was sprayed. The unwanted weeds recorded in the field were infested with Grassy Weeds (GW) i.e., Echinochloa colonum (Awn less barnyard grass), Echinochloa crus galli (Barnyard grass), Fimbrystylis miliacea (Hoorah grass); Sedges i.e. Cyperus difformis (Motha / Dila), Cyperus iria (Motha) and Broad leaf Weeds (BLW) viz. Alternanthera sessilis (Gudrisag), Ammania baccifera (Aginbuti ), Ludwigia spp. (Water Purslane), Marsilea quadrifoliate ( Chaupatiya), Monochorea vaginalis(Panpatta) Sphenoclea zeylenica ( Goose weed) etc. On the observation of field Echinochloa spp. (Barnyard grass) and Ludwigia spp. (Water Purslane ) were found to be most dominating and uniformly distributed in the experimental field. So, Echinochloa spp. and Ludwigia spp. were selected as representative weeds of Grassy Weed (GW) and Broad leaf Weed (BLW) respectively for evaluation of synergistic effect, bio-efficacy and phytotoxic effect of ternary composition, binary composition and solo products.

[0506] Early post-emergence treatment of unwanted weed plant population was observed from 0.25 m2area replicated thrice per plot at 30 days after application for weed control efficacy. Observations for Echinochloa spp. (GW) and Ludwigia spp. (BLW) were recorded at 30 days after application by observing m2area each replication per plot and based on number of weeds and Percent weed control efficacy (WCE) over control was calculated. Based on the Percent weed control efficacy in GW and BLW population the Expected control was calculated and compared with Observed control. The results of the trial have been presented here under in Table 2.

[0611] It is clearly evident from the data shown in above Table 2 for per cent control GW and BLW in rice crop that the ternary composition of the present invention comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III T1 to T4 are synergistic for both type of weeds control with > 1 Colby’s Ratio. The binary composition of herbicides (Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III) T13 to T16 and (Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula III) T9 to T12 are effective after ternary composition for the control of both type of weeds, but fail to represent any synergistic effect, whereas binary composition with (Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II) T5 to T8 are least effective against Grassy Weed (GW) and Broad Leaf Weed (BLW) in comparison to ternary composition for both type of weeds control, and fail to represent any synergistic effect, respectively. All binary compositions and solo product are shown less effective control of in both type of weeds control in compared to ternary compositions.

[0612] Example 2: Bio-efficacy evaluation of the stable synergistic herbicidal composition (Compound of Formula 118% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC) of the present invention on Rice crop.

[0613] For the ternary and binary herbicidal composition based on Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC evaluation under field conditions, the basic test composition Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC were used for trial. For ternary herbicidal composition, Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC was used and for binary herbicidal composition, Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% SC, Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC and Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC were used. The solo formulations of Compound of Formula I 18% SC, Compound of Formula II 2.2% SC and Compound of Formula III 1% SC were also used for comparison. The formulation of Compound of Formula I 25% EC, Compound of Formula II 60% DF and Compound of Formula III 2.67% OD available in the market were used for comparison.

[0614] The stable synergistic herbicidal composition of the present invention comprising Compound of Formula I 18% + Compound of Formula II 2.2% + Compound of Formula III 1% SC for the controlof Grassy Weed (GW) & Broad Leaf Weed (BLW) in transplanted rice variety (Variety: IR 36) was sown in 5 m x 5 m plots maintaining 20 cm x 10 cm (row to row and plant to plant) distance with three replications and in Randomized Block Design (RBD). The treatments were applied as foliar application 2 - 5 leaves of weeds by using knapsack sprayer fitted with flat fan nozzle in the form of SC formulation @ 2500 ml / ha. Each active component was applied at recommended doses in different ternary and binary compositions. Solo components and market samples were also taken for comparison.

[0615] The observations were recorded for the following objectives.

[0616] Objectives:

[0617] 1. Bio-efficacy evaluation against Grassy Weed (GW) in transplanted rice crop

[0618] 2. Bio-efficacy evaluation against Broad Leaf Weed (BLW) in transplanted rice crop 3. Bio-efficacy evaluation based on per cent weed control efficacy over control of GW. 4. Bio-efficacy evaluation based on percent weed control efficacy of BLW.

[0619] 5. Bio-efficacy evaluation based on crop yield and percent increase over control.

[0620] 6. Phytotoxicity evaluation on transplanted rice crop

[0653] Methodology:

[0654] The treatments T1 to T18 and T20 were used as 2-5 leaves stage of weeds whereas no treatment was done for T19 untreated control plots. The treatments were applied as foliar application at the time of 2 - 5 leaves stage of weeds. Each active component was applied at recommended dose in different ternary and binary compositions. Solo components were also taken for comparison. The unwanted weeds recorded in the field were infested with Grassy Weeds (GW) i.e., Echinochloa colonum (Awn less barnyard grass), Echinochloa crusgalli (Barnyard grass), Fimbrystylis miliacea (Hoorah grass); Sedges i.e. Cyperus difformis (Motha / Dila), Cyperus iria (Motha) and Broad leaf Weeds (BLW) viz. Altemanthera sessilis ( Gudrisag), Ammania baccifera (Aginbuti ), Ludwigia spp. (Water Purslane), Marsilea quadrifoliate (Chaupatiya), Monochoreavaginalis(Panpatta) Sphenoclea zeylenica (Goose weed) etc. On the observation of field Echinochloa spp. (Barnyard grass) and Ludwigia spp. (Water Purslane) were found to be most dominating and uniformly distributed in the experimental field.

[0655] Observations for GW & BLW were recorded at before, 30 days after application by observing m2area in each replication per plot and based on number of weeds and per cent weed control over control was calculated. The rice grain yield was recorded after harvest crop. The observations for phytotoxicity to rice crop at 1, 2, 5, 7, 10 and 15 days after application were also recorded. The data were subjected to statistically analysis of variance. Results are presented in Table 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D.

[0838] From the examples, it is clearly seen that the stable synergistic herbicidal composition of the present invention is superior for controlling the GW at 30 days after application (Table 2A) and for controlling BLW at 30 days after application (Table 2B) in rice crop as compared to the binary composition and solo component comprising at recommended dosage levels. The yield of rice crop also improved in the ternary stable synergistic herbicidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III SC as compared to binary and solo combinations (Table 2C). One of the reasons of higher rice grain yield may be due to better control of both type of weeds.

[0839] Further, the stable synergistic herbicidal composition comprising Compound of Formula I + Compound of Formula II + Compound of Formula III SC @ 1875 ml, 2500 ml, 3125 ml and 5000ml / ha further showed no phytotoxicity in the rice crop even after 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 days after application (Table 2D).

[0840] In particular, it has now been found, surprisingly that, for example, the herbicidal activity of the stable synergistic herbicidal composition of present invention, compared with the herbicidal activity of individual components, is synergistic. In fact, various advantageous properties associated with the compositions according to the invention, include but are not limited to: knock down effect on weeds at all developmental stages of weeds, preventing discoloration of leaves of plants and crops, enhanced tenderness to plants and crops, preventing ageing of plants and crops and other advantages familiar to a person skilled in the art.

[0841] From the above investigations, it will be observed that numerous modifications and variations can be effectuated without departing from the true spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. It is to be understood that no limitations with respect to the specific embodiments illustrated is intended or should be inferred. It should be understood that all such modifications and improvements have been deleted herein for the sake of conciseness and readability but are properly within the scope of the following claims.
