AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional methods for reducing carbon dioxide require the use of solid catalysts and electrodes, necessitating complex equipment and conditions for carbon dioxide diffusion, making them less efficient and costly.

Method used

A method involving the reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon compound with an alkali metal in a specific organic solvent to form a compound with an alkali metal cation and radical anion, followed by reaction with carbon dioxide to create a cross-coupling product with a carbon-carbon bond, which is then reacted with water or an acidic solution to produce carboxylic acids at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Benefits of technology

Enables easy and cost-effective reduction of carbon dioxide to produce carboxylic acids, allowing for simple separation and recovery of products under mild conditions.

Abstract

This carbon dioxide reduction treatment method comprises: a step for reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon compound, having an unsubstituted aromatic ring or an aromatic ring substituted with a hydrocarbon group or an alkoxy group, with an alkali metal in at least one organic solvent selected from the group consisting of cyclic ether solvents and alkyl ether solvents, to obtain a compound (A) composed of alkali metal cations and radical anions of the aromatic hydrocarbon compound; a step for reacting carbon dioxide with the compound (A) to obtain a cross-coupling product having a carbon–carbon bond; and a step for reacting the cross-coupling product with water or an acidic aqueous solution to obtain a carboxylic acid.
