[0003] The present invention relates, in general, to bathroom aids and more particularly to a chair for shower.

[0004] Background

[0005] Shower chairs are often provided in bathrooms of persons with mobility problems. To save space, installation of foldable shower chairs in such bathrooms is preferred. Quite often, however, some form of bathroom renovation is required when installing a foldable shower chair due to incompatible wall configurations such as, for example, partition walls and hollow block walls, which are typically non-load-bearing. The renovation costs significantly increase the overall installation costs for the shower chair.

[0006] Another issue of shower chairs is that shower chairs are not suitable for use throughout the entire shower process. A conventional shower chair simply provides a seat for a user to sit on, however user struggles to find support to be positioned on the seating area and to change positions during the shower process. One of the solutions is to install a separate wall mounted grab bar in the bathroom to assist the shower process, but this is likely to increase installation costs.

[0009] Accordingly, in a first aspect, the present invention provides a chair for shower, comprising a frame comprising a seat support portion and an upright portion; a leg member attached to the seat support portion of the frame; an upright mount configured to mount the upright portion of the frame to the support structure; and an arm pivotably attached to the upright portion of the frame. As described in the preferred embodiment, advantageously, configuration of the upright mount may allow load bearing on the arm (e.g., when a user leans on the arm of the chairs to change positions or use the arm of the chairs as support) to be transferred to the upright portion of the frame and eventually to the support structure via theupright mount. In this way, the chair may withstand greater load and has improved structural strength.

The present invention is illustrated by way of example and is not limited by the accompanying figures, in which like references indicate similar elements. It is to be understood that the drawings are not to scale and have been simplified for ease of understanding the invention. It is to be understood that the same or equivalent functions may be accomplished by different embodiments that are intended to be encompassed within the scope of the invention.

[0047] Referring to FIGS. 1A-1D, a chair 10 for shower according to a first embodiment is shown. The chair 10 includes a frame 12 comprising a seat support portion 120; a leg member 14 attached to the seat support portion 120 of the frame 12; a mount 16 configured to mount the frame 12 to a support structure 18; and a reinforcement member 20 configured to couple the mount 16 to the leg member 14. The chair 10 allows the reinforcement member 20 to transfer loads bearing on the seat support portion 120 (e.g. a user seating on the chair 10) away from the support structure 18 to the leg member 14.

[0048] The frame 12 is a foldable frame, and the leg member 14 is pivotally attached to the seat support portion 120 of the frame 12, as illustrated in Fig. 1D. The U-shaped grab bar 131 provides compressive resistance to the load applied onto the arm and thereby helps prevent deformation of the arm 134. An armpad 135 is attached to the arm 134, the armpad 135 is best illustrated in FIG. 1C. The armpad 135 provides a cushioning effect for comfort when a user grabs the at least one arm 134 for support or rests an arm on the armpad 135. The armpad 135 is made of polyamide for easy maintenance while the arm 134 is made of stainless steel for strength.

[0049] The leg member 14 includes a plurality of front legs 140 and a plurality of rear legs 142. A height of at least one of the plurality of front legs or rear legs is adjustable or retractable for about ±20 mm. A height adjustment mechanism 144 is provided at at least one of the plurality of front legs 140 or rear legs 142. Each of the front legs 140 further includes an anti-slip rubber tip 145 at a tip of the corresponding front leg 140. The leg member 14 includes a stretcher 146 extending across a pair of the front legs 140 or rear legs 142. Advantageously, the at least one stretcher 146 may act as a brace between corresponding pairs of the front legs and the rear legs, helping to reinforce the front legs140 and / or the rear legs 142.

The back mount plate 160 and the two side mount plates 164 are formed of a piece of sheet metal, bent into shape, so as to increase a strength of the mount 16. Moreover, as illustrated in FIG. 2C, each buttress 200 comprises a bend 204 formed between the proximal end 201 and the distal end 202. The proximal end of each buttress 200 is coupled directly to the mount 16. The chair 10 may still be folded completely as illustrated in FIG. 2D with only one bend 204. In addition, referring to FIG. 2B, the two arms 134 are connected with a bar 133. The two arms 134 are singularly formed such that the two arms may be simultaneously raised or lowered together in a single operation. Advantageously, connecting both the first and second arms 134 into a singular unit increases load-bearing capabilities of the first and second arms 134 by spreading a loadapplied on one or both the first and second arms 134 across the bar 133 connecting both the first and second arms 134.

To unfold the chair 10, the seat support portion 120 of the chair 10 is pivoted and lowered to a first position as shown in FIGs. 1C, 2C and 3A, where the seat support portion 120 is substantially perpendicular to support structure 18 (e.g., a wall). At the same time, the leg member 14 (e g., a pair of front legs) pivotably attached to the seat support portion 120 are pivoted and lowered until the leg member 14 (i.e. , the pair of front legs) rest on a ground. A chair for shower, comprising:a frame comprising a seat support portion and an upright portion;a leg member attached to the seat support portion of the frame;an upright mount configured to mount the upright portion of the frame to the support structure; andan arm pivotably attached to the upright portion of the frame.

2. The chair of claim 1 , wherein the arm comprises a stop provided at a distal end of the arm.

3. The chair of claim 1 or 2, wherein the arm further comprises an armpad.

4. The chair of any one of claim 1 to 3, wherein the arm further comprises a U-shaped grab bar.

5. A chair for shower, comprising:a frame comprising a seat support portion;a leg member attached to the seat support portion of the frame;a mount configured to mount the frame to a support structure; anda reinforcement member configured to couple the mount to the leg member.

6. The chair of claim 5, wherein the frame is a foldable frame, and wherein the leg member is pivotally attached to the seat support portion of the frame.

7. The chair of claim 5 or 6, wherein the leg member comprises a plurality of front legs, and optionally a plurality of rear legs.

8. The chair of claim 7, wherein a height of at least one of the plurality of front legs or rear legs is adjustable.

9. The chair of claim 7 or 8, wherein the leg member further comprises at least one stretcher extending across a pair of the front legs or rear legs.

The chair of any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the reinforcement member comprises a plurality of buttresses configured to couple the mount to the corresponding front leg, wherein each buttress comprises a proximal end proximate to the mount and a distal end extending away from the mount and coupled to the corresponding front leg.

16. The chair of claim 15, wherein a distal corner of each side mount plate is chamfered to form a chamfered edge.

17. The chair of any one of claims 5 to 16, wherein the frame further comprises an upright portion.

18. The chair of claim 17, further comprising at least one arm pivotably attached to the upright portion of the frame.

19. The chair of claim 18, wherein the at least one arm comprises a stop provided at a distal end of the at least one arm.

20. The chair of claim 18 or 19, wherein the at least one arm comprises a U-shaped grab bar.

21. The chair of any one of claims 18 to 20, wherein the at least one arm comprises a first arm and a second arm, each of the first and second arms being pivotably attached to corresponding upright portion of the frame, and wherein the first and second arms are singularly formed.

22. The chair of any one of claims 18 to 21, further comprising a backrest attached to the upright portion of the frame.

23. The chair of any one of claims 5 to 22, wherein the seat support portion comprises a seat.
