[0040] Communications discussed herein may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, New Radio (NR) Access, Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , cdma2000, and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and the like. Furthermore, the communications may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.85G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) , and the sixth (6G) communication protocols. The techniques described herein may be used for the wireless networks and radio technologies mentioned above as well as other wireless networks and radio technologies. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0041] The terminal device or the network device may have Artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning capability. It generally includes a model which has been trained from numerous collected data for a specific function, and can be used to predict some information.

[0042] The terminal device or the network device may work on several frequency ranges, e.g. FR1 (410 MHz to 7125 MHz) , FR2 (24.25GHz to 71GHz) , frequency band larger than 100GHz as well as Tera Hertz (THz) . It can further work on licensed / unlicensed / shared spectrum. The terminal device may have more than one connection with the network device under Multi-Radio Dual Connectivity (MR-DC) application scenario. The terminal device or the network device can work on full duplex, flexible duplex and cross division duplex modes.

[0043] The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed in test equipment, e.g., signal generator, signal analyzer, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, test terminal device, test network device, or channel emulator.

[0044] The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the 1G, 2G, 2.5G, 2.75G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, 5G, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or 6G networks.

[0045] The term “circuitry” used herein may refer to hardware circuits and / or combinations of hardware circuits and software. For example, the circuitry may be a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuits with software / firmware. As a further example, the circuitry may be any portions of hardware processors with software including digital signal processor (s) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a terminal device or a network device, to perform various functions. In a still further example, the circuitry may be hardware circuits and or processors, such as a microprocessor or a portion of a microprocessor, that requires software / firmware for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. As used herein, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (s) or a portion of a hardware circuit or processor (s) and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware.

[0046] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0047] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as “best, ” “lowest, ” “highest, ” “minimum, ” “maximum, ” or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0048] It is to be noted that, in the present disclosure, if not specified otherwise, the term “OFDM symbol” indicates CP-OFDM symbol, or any variant of OFDM symbol, e.g., DFT-s-OFDM, GI-OFDM, zero CP OFDM, unique word OFDM, etc.

[0049] A study item on Ambient IoT has completed in 3GPP Rel-18, which provides a terminological and scoping framework for future discussions of Ambient IoT. This has defined representative use cases, deployment scenarios, connectivity topologies, Ambient IoT devices, design targets, and required functionalities. It also conducted a preliminary feasibility assessment and gave recommendations for down-selection in setting the scope of Rel-19 radio access network (RAN) work group (WG) level study. The study on A-IoT, which has been started in 3GPP RAN1 and RAN2 in Rel-19, targets at a new 3GPP IoT technology, suitable for deployment in a 3GPP system, which relies on ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for the very-low end IoT applications.

[0050] To support ambient IoT devices in the NR system, new features should be introduced, e.g., new waveform, new frame structure, new physical layer and higher layer procedures, etc. In order to detect R2D signal and generate device-to-reader (D2R) signal, an A-IoT device may need to generate a clock with a certain frequency. However, the A-IoT device may have poor performance, e.g., the clock frequency may drift over time and lead to severe sampling frequency offset (SFO) . Therefore, a clock acquisition part (CAP) should be used before a physical reader-to-device channel (PRDCH) for clock acquisition and calibration.

[0051] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of communication. In the solution, a first device (such as a Reader) may determine a preamble for an R2D transmission, where the R2D transmission is generated based on a value of a parameter indicating a number of chips in an OFDM symbol of the R2D transmission. The preamble includes a CAP with a first part and a second part that is adjacent to and directly follows the first part. The first part is determined based on a first value of the parameter and a duration of the first part is constant for different values of parameter being used for generating R2D transmissions, and the second part is determined based on a second value of the parameter and a duration of the second part is determined based on the value of the parameter. As such, the first part of CAP may be used for synchronization and the second part of CAP may be used for determining the value for parameter associated with the R2D transmission. Therefore, the R2D transmission can be efficiently received by the A-IoT device. Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0052] FIG. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 may include A-IoT devices 110-1 to 110-M (separately or collectively referred to as an A-IoT device 110) , a terminal device 120, a network device 130 and a core network (CN) entity 140.

[0053] For ease of description, the A-IoT device 110 may be referred to as a Device in some cases, and the terminal device 120 and the network device 130 may be collectively or separately referred to as a Reader in some cases. It is to be noted that although a base station (BS) and / or user equipment (UE) is illustrated as a reader, the device type of the reader can be in a different type which is not limited for this aspect.

[0054] In some examples, a transmission from the Device (i.e. ambient IoT device) to the Reader (the terminal device 120 or the network device 130) may be referred to as a device-to-reader (D2R) transmission or an uplink (UL) transmission. In some examples, a transmission from the Reader to the Device may be referred to as a reader-to-device (R2D) transmission or a downlink (DL) transmission.

[0055] The CN entity 140 may be a network function (NF) in CN, such as a 5GC or a 6G core network. For example, the CN entity 140 may be implemented as an A-IoT function (AIF) or an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) of a 5GC.

[0056] In some examples, the network 100 may also include an additional carrier wave node (CWN) , which may transmit carrier wave e.g., for energy harvesting and backscattering, to the A-IoT device 110. In some examples, the CWN may be a device that is different from the terminal device 120 or the network device 130. In some other examples, the CWN may be implemented as one of the terminal device 120 or the network device 130. For example, the CWN may be a UE, a relay node, a gNB, or a network controlled node. For example, the CWN may be a logical entity implemented in a reader. For example, the CWN may be a unit, e.g., an embedded unit or a remote unit, of a reader. For example, the CWN may be outside topology or inside topology.

[0057] Communications in the environment, between a network device and a terminal device for example, between a network device / aterminal device and an A-IoT device for example, may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Divided Multiple Address (CDMA) , Frequency Divided Multiple Address (FDMA) , Time Divided Multiple Address (TDMA) , Frequency Divided Duplexer (FDD) , Time Divided Duplexer (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Divided Multiple Access (OFDMA) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0058] Embodiments of the present disclosure can be applied to any suitable scenarios. For example, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented at reduced capability NR devices. Alternatively, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented in one of the followings: NR multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) , NR sidelink enhancements, NR systems with frequency above 52.6GHz, an extending NR operation up to 71GHz, narrow band-Internet of Thing (NB-IOT)  / enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) over non-terrestrial networks (NTN) , NTN, UE power saving enhancements, NR coverage enhancement, NB-IoT and LTE-MTC, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) , NR Multicast and Broadcast Services, or enhancements on Multi-Radio Dual-Connectivity.

[0059] It is to be understood that the numbers of devices and their connection relationships and types shown in FIG. 1A are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The environment may include any suitable numbers of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0060] The Ambient IoT refers to a new class of IoT devices primarily powered by harvesting ambient energy from radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other viable ambient energy source. FIG. 1B illustrates an example schematic of a communication 105 between an A-IoT device 110 and a Reader (which is shown as the terminal device 120, and optional the Reader may be the network device 130) . It is to be noted that although the reader is illustrated as a UE in FIG. 1B, the device type of the reader can be in a different type which is not limited for this aspect.

[0061] The Ambient IoT is an extension of the existing IoT. Ambient IoT devices carry out many of the same functions as IoT devices and target many of the same use cases but require additional design choices to meet solution demands. By relying on energy harvested from ambient sources, the Ambient IoT makes it possible to develop lower-cost, smaller, and maintenance-free devices, allowing the IoT to become more scalable in existing use cases and in use cases still to be developed.

[0062] Harvesting energy from ambient sources generates only minimal amounts of power. This creates the inherent requirement for Ambient IoT devices to be less complex and more power efficient. The A-IoT device does not need to actively generate a signal, but communicates by reflecting electromagnetic waves generated by other devices.

[0063] The following connectivity topologies (topology 1 and topology 2) for Ambient IoT networks and devices are defined for the purposes of the study on ambient IoT in RAN. In all these topologies, the Ambient IoT device may be provided with a carrier wave from other node (s) either inside or outside the topology. The links in each topology may be bidirectional or unidirectional.

[0064] FIG. 1C illustrates an example schematic of deployment scenario 1 with topology 1 for an A-IoT device. In Topology 1, the ambient IoT device directly and bidirectionally communicates with a base station. The BS serves as the Reader for the ambient IoT device and performs operation (e.g., inventory, read, write, etc. ) to the ambient IoT device. The communication between the base station and the ambient IoT device includes Ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This topology includes the possibility that the BS transmitting to the Ambient IoT device is a different from the BS receiving from the Ambient IoT device. In topology 1, the base station and coexistence characteristics may include Micro-cell, co-site, etc.

[0065] FIG. 1D illustrates an example schematic of deployment scenario 2 with topology 2 for an A-IoT device. In Topology 2, the Ambient IoT device communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node between the device and the base station. The intermediate node serves as the Reader for the ambient IoT device and performs operation (e.g., inventory, read, write, etc. ) to the ambient IoT device. In this topology, the intermediate node can be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, etc. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node transfers Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the base station and the Ambient IoT device. In topology 2, the base station and coexistence characteristics may include Micro-cell, co-site, etc. In topology 2, the location of intermediate node may be indoor.

[0066] An overall objective of the study on ambient IoT shall be to study a harmonized air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for Ambient IoT to enable the following devices: ○ Device 1: ~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling  frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. ○ Device 2a: ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption, has energy storage,  initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. ○ Device 2b: ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption, has energy storage,  initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The device’s UL transmission is generated internally by the device.

[0067] R2D waveform of an R2D transmission may be generated based on on-off keying (OOK) . The time domain OOK signal may be M chips of one OFDM symbol, and a chip may be represented (e.g., upsampled) by L samples. An N’-points discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is performed on the samples of one OFDM symbol to obtain the frequency domain frequency, where N’=128, or N’=M*L, or N’=X (i.e., a number of subcarrier for R2D transmission) , or N’ is another value (e.g., 2n) . In addition, the frequency domain signal obtained by N’-points DFT may be mapped to X subcarriers of Btx, R2D. On the other side, an N-point inverse DFT (IDFT) may be performed to obtain the time domain signal.

[0068] An R2D timing acquisition signal (R-TAS) , immediately preceding the transmission of physical reader-to-device channel (PRDCH) , is included at least for timing acquisition and indicating the start of R2D transmission in the time domain. An R-TAS structure using a preamble is studied, in which a start-indicator part provides the start of the R2D transmission, and immediately precedes a clock-acquisition part which is used to determine the OOK chip duration of the subsequent PRDCH transmission. The preamble is not part of PRDCH.

[0069] The following options have been studied for the start-indicator part: - Option 1: ON-OFF transmission is considered based on energy / edge detection, and  multiple alternatives have been studied including: - Alt 1: A single ON-OFF transmission, i.e. one high-voltage transmission  followed by one low-voltage transmission, where ON and OFF may have same or different durations; - Alt 2: A multi-ON-OFF transmission, where different ON and different  OFF may have same or different durations and different parts may have same or different duration. - Option 2: ON-OFF sequence-based design is considered which consists of a pre- defined sequence for detection of start-indicator part based on digital correlation.

[0070] For both the options, it is observed that a fixed duration for the start-indicator part can be considered, regardless of the value of M used for PRDCH transmissions. For both the options, it may be beneficial that the start-indicator part is distinguishable at least from other parts of the R2D transmissions.

[0071] The clock-acquisition part is based on OOK without line coding, and includes rising / falling edges, including at least two rising or at least two falling edges for the device to determine the OOK chip duration.

[0072] In the present disclosure, a solution of the CAP, that is included in a preamble for an R2D transmission, is provided. The CAP may include two parts, each has one or a plurality of chips, a chip may be a high voltage chip (or called as a high voltage signal) or a low voltage chip (or called as a low voltage signal) . For example, a high voltage signal may be a non-zero power signal, and a low voltage signal may be a zero power signal. In some examples, the R2D transmission is generated based on an OFDM waveform framework, e.g., OOK-1 or OOK-4. In some examples, the high voltage chip may be interchangeably used with an OOK-ON chip, and the low voltage chip may be interchangeably used with an OOK-OFF chip. For example, a high voltage chip (or OOK-ON chip) may be represented by a bit value “1” , and a low voltage chip (or OOK-OFF chip) may be represented by a bit value “0” .

[0073] In the present disclosure, an A-IoT device may utilize the SIP to trigger a reception of CAP, and the SIP may have a constant time duration for different M values, where one M value is used for generating an R2D transmission (e.g., PRDCH) . In the present disclosure, an A-IoT device may utilize the CAP for clock calibration and may acquire chip length based on CAP. An A-IoT device may or may not need to acquire OFDM symbol length and / or the M value.

[0074] In the present disclosure, a chip length may refer to a duration or a time length of a chip. In the present disclosure, a chip may be a high voltage chip, a high voltage signal, or an OOK-ON chip; or may be a low voltage chip, a low voltage signal, or an OOK-OFF chip. In some examples, a chip length may also be referred to as an OOK chip duration.

[0075] In the present disclosure, a chip pattern may refer to a pattern of high voltage chip and low voltage chip (or high voltage signal and low voltage signal) (or OOK-ON chip and OOK-OFF chip) . In some examples, the chip pattern may be high-low pattern or ON-OFF pattern. For example, an adjacent chip of a high voltage chip (or an OOK-ON chip) is a low voltage chip (or an OOK-OFF chip) , and an adjacent chip of a low voltage chip (or an OOK-OFF chip) is a high voltage chip (or an OOK-ON chip) .

[0076] In the present disclosure, a parameter M is used to represent a number of chips in an OFDM symbol, which is only for illustration without any limitation. In some examples, the parameter may be represented in another form. In some examples, a value of the parameter may be selected from a set of candidate values. For example, the set of candidate values may include part or all of the following: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64…

[0077] FIG. 2 illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 200 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 200 may involve a first device 201 and a second device 202, where the first device 201 may be a Reader such as a terminal device 120 or a network device 130 as discussed with reference to FIG. 1A, and where the second device 202 may be a Device such as an A-IoT device 110 as discussed with reference to FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that the process 200 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0078] In the process 200, the first device 201 determines a preamble for an R2D transmission at 210. In some implementations, the R2D transmission may include a preamble and a PRDCH. In some implementations, the R2D transmission may be the PRDCH, and a preamble is adjacent to and is before the PRDCH. For example, the preamble is not part of PRDCH.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) is generated based on a value for a parameter. In the present disclosure, the value for the parameter may be represented as M value, which may be determined or selected from a set of candidate M values. In some examples, each candidate M value in the set may indicate a number of chips in an OFDM symbol of an R2D transmission.

[0080] In some examples, one M value may be determined, which is used for generating the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) that mentioned at 210, and the M value indicates a number of OOK chips in an OFDM symbol of the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) .

[0081] In some example embodiments, the preamble includes a SIP and a CAP, where the CAP includes a first part and a second part. For example, the first part of the CAP may be represented as CAP1, and the second part of the CAP may be represented as CAP2. In some examples, the first part (i.e., CAP1) is adjacent to and directly follows the SIP. In some examples, the second part (i.e., CAP2) is adjacent to and directly follows the first part. For example, CAP2 is immediately follows CAP1. FIG. 3A illustrates an example of an R2D transmission 310. As illustrated, a preamble 312 is adjacent to and is before the PRDCH 314; and the preamble 312 includes SIP 3122 and CAP 3124. For example, the CAP 3124 may include two parts.

[0082] In some examples, the first part may be used for clock calibration, for example, the first part may be within a same OFDM symbol, that is the first part does not cross an OFDM symbol boundary. For example, a duration of the first part may be shorter than or equal to the length of an OFDM symbol. In some examples, the second part may be used for determining the chip length of PRDCH, which can be cross an OFDM symbol boundary.

[0083] In some implementations, the first part of CAP includes at least one chip (e.g., at least one OOK chip) , such as at least one OOK-ON chip, at least one OOK-OFF chip, at least one high voltage signal, or at least one low voltage signal. In some example embodiments, a duration of the first part of CAP is constant for different candidate M value. In some examples, the duration of CAP1 is irrelevant to the M value. In some examples, the duration of CAP1 is not related to (or not associated with) a number of chips in an OFDM symbol of the R2D transmission (or the PRDCH) . In some examples, a duration of an OOK chip (e.g., a chip length) in the first part is constant for different candidate M values.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the first part of CAP may be generated based on a first value of the parameter, which may be represented as a first M value. In some example embodiments, the second part of CAP may be generated based on a second value of the parameter, which may be represented as a second M value.

[0085] In some examples, the first value may the not the same as (i.e. different from) the second value used for the second part and / or the value used for the PRDCH. For example, the first M value is different from the second M value used for CAP2. For example, the first M value is different from the M value used for PRDCH. For example, the first M value may be variable for different M values for PRDCH. For example, the first M value may be variable for different second M values for CAP2.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the first part of CAP may include only one chip, which may be a high voltage chip, such as an OOK-ON chip. In some examples, the SIP may be end with a low voltage chip (such as an OOK-OFF chip) . In some examples, the second part of CAP may start with a low voltage chip (such as an OOK-OFF chip) . As such, there will be a transition edge at each side of the first part of CAP (i.e. the only one OOK-ON chip of the CAP1) , accordingly the A-IoT device may identify the CAP1, e.g., by using edge / energy detection. FIG. 3B illustrates an example of R2D transmission 320. As illustrated, CAP1 includes one OOK-ON chip, each of the last chip 321 of SIP and the first chip 322 of CAP2 is an OOK-OFF chip.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the first part of CAP may include two chips with one high voltage chip and one low voltage chip, such as one OOK-ON chip and one OOK-OFF chip. In some examples, the duration of the first part may equal to a length of an OFDM symbol including or excluding CP. For example, the first M value for CAP1 is 1, and optional the subcarrier spacing (SCS) for the OFDM symbol for CAP1 is 30kHz. For another example, the first M value for CAP1 is 2, and optional the SCS for the OFDM symbol for CAP1 is 15kHz. FIG. 3C illustrates an example of R2D transmission 330. As illustrated, CAP1 includes one OOK-ON chip and one OOK-OFF chip. For example, the ON-OFF pattern may be applied for CAP1.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the first part of CAP may include four chips with two high voltage chips and two low voltage chips, such as two OOK-ON chip and two OOK-OFF chips. In some examples, the two OOK-ON chips (or the two OOK-OFF chips) are not adjacent. FIG. 3D illustrates an example of R2D transmission 340. As illustrated, CAP1 includes two OOK-ON chips and two OOK-OFF chips. For example, the ON-OFF pattern may be applied for CAP1 and the first M value for CAP1 may be 4, in this case, the ON-OFF pattern of CAP1 may be [1 0 1 0] , where “1” represents an OOK-ON chip and “0” represents an OOK-OFF chip.

[0089] In some example embodiments, a chip in CAP1 may comprise multiple consecutive sub-chips, and the multiple consecutive sub-chips of a chip in CAP1 are all OOK-ON sub-chips or OOK-OFF sub-chips, where a duration of the chip equals to a sum of durations of the multiple consecutive sub-chips. For example, an OOK-ON chip in CAP1 generated with a first M value of 2 may be equivalent to two consecutive OOK-ON sub-chips generated with a first value of 4. In some examples, a value of the parameter for generating a sub-chip of the CAP1 may be same as the second value or the value of the parameter.

[0090] In some implementations, the second part of CAP may be generated based on a second value, i.e., the second M value. In some example embodiments, the second part of CAP may be used to indicate the M value for the PRDCH. In some example embodiments, the second part of CAP may include one or a plurality of chips, e.g., including at least one OOK-ON chip and at least one OOK-OFF chip. In some example embodiments, a duration of the second part is determined based on the M value.

[0091] In some examples, the first device 201 may generate the second part based on the second M value, and may determine a duration of the second part based on the M value.

[0092] In some example embodiments, the second M value for CAP2 may be the same as the M value for the PRDCH. FIG. 3E illustrates an example of R2D transmission 350. As illustrated, CAP2 includes multiple OOK chips, and a chip length in the CAP2 equals to a chip length in the PRDCH; in other words, the second M value for CAP2 equals to the M value for PRDCH.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the second M value for CAP2 may be different from the M value for the PRDCH. FIG. 3F illustrates an example of R2D transmission 360. As illustrated, CAP2 includes multiple OOK chips, and a chip length in the CAP2 does not equal to a chip length in the PRDCH; in other words, the second M value for CAP2 is different from the M value for PRDCH.

[0094] In some example embodiments, the second M value for CAP2 may be constant, and the ON-OFF pattern for CAP2 may be determined from a set of candidate ON-OFF patterns. In some examples, each of the candidate ON-OFF patterns in the set may be associated with an M value (or a chip duration) used for the PRDCH.

[0095] In some example embodiments, a duration of the second part of CAP (CAP2 duration) may be determined based on the M value. In some examples, for different M values, the duration of CAP2 may be different. FIG. 3G illustrates an example of R2D transmission 370. As illustrated, CAP2 includes multiple OOK chips, and a duration of CAP2 may depend on the M value. As illustrated, the CAP2 duration for M=m1 is longer than the CAP2 duration for M=m2.

[0096] In some examples, a duration of the second part of CAP (CAP2 duration) may be constant for different second M values, and the ON-OFF pattern for CAP2 is determined based on the second M value and the CAP2 duration. For example, the ON-OFF pattern for CAP2 may be an repeated [1 0] or [0 1] pattern, and the repetition number of [1 0] and [0 1] is dependent on the CAP2 duration. For example, the ON-OFF pattern for CAP2 may be a combination of [1 0] and [0 1] , and the number of the combination is dependent on the CAP2 duration.

[0097] In some examples, the ON-OFF pattern for CAP2 may be constant for different second M values, and the duration of the second part of CAP (CAP2 duration) may be different for different second M values.

[0098] Referring back to FIG. 2, the first device 201 transmits the R2D transmission at 220. At the other side of communication, the second device 202 detects to receives the preamble for the R2D transmission, and accordingly receive the R2D transmission based on the preamble at 230.

[0099] In some implementations, the second device 202 may detect SIP. The second device 202 may start to detect (or measure or receive) the CAP after detecting SIP. In some examples, the second device 202 may start to detect the first part of CAP (i.e., CAP1) after detecting SIP. In some examples, the second device 202 may detect (or measure or receive) CAP1 based on a first M value. In some examples, the second device 202 may detect (or measure or receive) CAP1 based on the first M value and the ON-OFF pattern of CAP1. In some examples, the second device 202 may perform to achieve synchronization or clock acquisition / calibration based on CAP1.

[0100] In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may assume a first M value to detect the CAP1. For example, the assumed M value may be a default value, a constant value, a predefined value, a value configured or preconfigured by a high layer. In some example embodiments, blind detecting may be used by the second device 202 to determine the first M value, for example, a duration of detected OOK chip may be used.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may perform clock calibration based on the first part of the CAP. In some examples, the second device 202 may determine an ideal number of samples of the first part of the CAP based on the first value; count a number of samples in the duration of the first part of the CAP; and perform the clock calibration based on the ideal number and the counted number. For example, the second device 202 may count the samples in the duration of received CAP1 (or one or more OOK chips, e.g., OOK-ON chips, in CAP1) , and compare the counted number of samples with the ideal number of samples calculated based on the clock frequency (i.e., without considering SFO) and the duration of CAP1 (or duration of an OOK chip in CAP1) .

[0102] In some implementations, the second device 202 may further receive the second part of CAP (i.e. CAP2) and determine the M value for PRDCH based on the CAP2.

[0103] In some example embodiments, the second M value for CAP2 is the same as the M value for PRDCH, and the second device 202 may determine that a chip duration of PRDCH is the same as that of CAP2.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the second M value for CAP2 is different from the M value for PRDCH. In some examples, the second device 202 may determine the M value (and / or a chip length) for PRDCH based on a control signal in the PRDCH. In some examples, the second device 202 may determine the M value (and / or a chip length) for PRDCH based on based on the first M value for CAP1 and the second M value for CAP2. For example, the M value or the chip length for PRDCH may be determined based on a function of one or multiple of the following: the first M value for CAP1, a chip length of CAP1, the second M value for CAP2, or a chip length of CAP2. For instance, the first value for CAP1 may be represented as M1, and the second value for CAP2 may be represented as M2, and the M value may be determined based on a first function of M1*M2 or a second function of M1 / M2.

[0105] In some examples, the second M value for CAP2 may be constant. For example, a set of candidate ON-OFF patterns may be predefined, and each of the candidate ON-OFF patterns is associated with an integer, then the second device 202 may determine the M value (or chip length) for PRDCH based on the integer and the first M value for CAP1. For instance, the multiplication of the integer and the first M value (or chip length) may be used for determining the M value (or the chip length) for PRDCH.

[0106] In addition, the second device 202 receives the PRDCH based on the detected CAP (which includes CAP1 and CAP2) at 230. In some examples, the second device 202 may receive the PRDCH based on the determined M value or the chip length for PRDCH.

[0107] Accordingly, the second device may perform synchronization or clock acquisition  / calibration based on the first part of CAP, and may determine chip duration of the PRDCH based on the second part of CAP.

[0108] According to embodiments with reference to FIGS. 2-3G, the CAP may include a first part (CAP1) and a second part (CAP2) . A duration of the CAP1 may be constant and irrelevant to M value for PRDCH, thus the second device does not need to determine the duration of CAP1, it is beneficial for the second device to acquire synchronization and clock calibration based on the first part. The CAP2 is used to determine the M value, and the duration of CAP2 can be variable for different M values for PRDCH, therefore the CAP2 can be shorter for a large M value, and the overhead can be reduced.

[0109] Reference is further made to FIG. 4, which illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 400 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may involve a first device 201 and a second device 202, where the first device 201 may be a Reader such as a terminal device 120 or a network device 130 as discussed with reference to FIG. 1A, and where the second device 202 may be a Device such as an A-IoT device 110 as discussed with reference to FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that the process 400 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0110] In the process 400, the first device 201 determines a preamble for an R2D transmission at 410. In some implementations, the R2D transmission may include a preamble and a PRDCH. In some implementations, the R2D transmission may be the PRDCH, and a preamble is adjacent to and is before the PRDCH. For example, the preamble is not part of PRDCH.

[0111] In some example embodiments, the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) is generated based on a value for a parameter. In the present disclosure, the value for the parameter may be represented as M value, which may be determined or selected from a set of candidate M values. In some examples, each candidate M value in the set may indicate a number of chips in an OFDM symbol of an R2D transmission.

[0112] In some examples, one M value may be determined, which is used for generating the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) that mentioned at 410, and the M value indicates a number of OOK chips in an OFDM symbol of the R2D transmission (e.g., the PRDCH) .

[0113] In some example embodiments, the preamble includes a SIP and a CAP, where the CAP may be adjacent to and directly follows the SIP. In some examples, the CAP may be determined based on the value for parameter, i.e., the M value.

[0114] In some implementations, a duration of the CAP may be determined based on a subset to which the M value belongs. In some examples, multiple subsets may be mapped to multiple durations respectively. Take two subsets as an example, a duration of the CAP is a first duration in case the M value belongs to a first subset of values; and a duration of the CAP is a second duration in case the M value belongs to a second subset of values. For example, the first duration does not equal to the second duration. It should be noted that there may be a third subset, etc. and any two subsets may not have an intersection.

[0115] In some example embodiments, a set of candidate M values may include multiple integer values each being larger than 0. In some examples, the set of candidate M values may include part or all integer values of the following: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64…

[0116] In some examples, each of the first subset or the second subset may include at least one candidate M value from the set of candidate M values. In some examples, there is no intersection between the first subset and the second subset. In some examples, a maximum value in the first subset is smaller than a minimum value in the second subset, and the first duration is longer than the second duration.

[0117] In some examples, each candidate M value in the first subset is smaller than a threshold, and each candidate M value in the second subset is larger than the threshold. For instance, the threshold may be 5, or 7, or another value.

[0118] In some examples, each candidate M value in the first subset is smaller than or equal to (or smaller than) a threshold, and each candidate M value in the second subset is larger than (or larger than or equal to) the threshold. For instance, the threshold may be 4, or 8, or another value.

[0119] As an example, the first subset may include at least two values among 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8. For instance, the first subset may be [1 2 4 6 8] . For instance, the first subset may be [1] , [2] , [4] , [6] , and [8] .

[0120] As an example, the second subset may include at least two values among 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, and 64. For instance, the second subset may be [6 8 12 16 24 32 48 64] . For instance, the second sub set may be [6 8] , [12 16] , [24 32] , and [48 64] .

[0121] In some examples, the first duration is mapped to values in the first subset, for example, the first duration is the same for different candidate M values within the first subset. In some examples, the second duration is mapped to values in the second subset, for example, the second duration is the same for different candidate M values within the second subset.

[0122] In some implementations, an M value in the first subset is used for the CAP, in this case, the CAP may start from a start of an OFDM symbol, or may start from a time instance in an OFDM symbol. In some example embodiments, a duration of the CAP that is based on an M value in the first subset may be longer than one OFDM symbol, e.g., 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 OFDM symbols.

[0123] In some example embodiments, the CAP is determined based on an M value in the first subset, and the ON-OFF pattern of CAP may include a number of repetitions of [1 0] or [0 1] pattern or combinations of [0 1] and [1 0] . In some examples, if M=1, then an OOK-ON chip (ahigh voltage signal) or an OOK-OFF chip (alow voltage signal) duration comprises CP of the OFDM symbol. FIG. 5A illustrates an example of a preamble 510. As illustrated, when M=1, the CAP may include an OOK-ON chip 511 and an OOK-OFF chip 512, each OOK chip has a duration of the OFDM symbol including the CP.

[0124] In some examples, if M>1, a first OOK chip (ahigh voltage signal or a low voltage signal) in an OFDM symbol does not comprise the CP duration. As illustrated in FIG. 5, when M=2 or M=4, the first chip in CAP is an OOK-ON chip starting from a start of an OFDM symbol excluding CP.

[0125] For example, the (M*K) -th or (M*K+1) -th OOK chip (ahigh / low voltage signal) may start from a start of the OFDM symbol excluding CP, where K=0, 1, 2, … For example, the [M* (K+1) -1] -th or [M* (K+1) ] -th OOK chip (ahigh / low voltage signal) may end at an end of a CP, where K=0, 1, 2, … As illustrated in FIG. 5A, each of the chip 514 and the chip 516 starts from a start of the OFDM symbol 519 excluding the CP 518, and each of the chip 513 and the chip 515 ends at an end of the CP 518.

[0126] In some example embodiments, the CAP is determined based on an M value in the first subset, and the CAP starts from a time instance within an OFDM symbol. In some examples, the CAP ends at an end of an OFDM symbol. In some examples, for an M value in the first subset (M≠1) , a first chip of the CAP within an OFDM symbol is a high voltage chip and a last chip of the CAP within the OFDM symbol is a low voltage chip; or a first chip of the CAP within an OFDM symbol is a low voltage chip and a last chip of the CAP within the OFDM symbol is a high voltage chip.

[0127] In some examples, if M>1, a first OOK chip (ahigh voltage signal or a low voltage signal) in an OFDM symbol (except the case that there is only one OOK chip in an OFDM symbol) does not comprise the CP of the OFDM symbol, and a last OOK chip (ahigh voltage signal or a low voltage signal) in an OFDM symbol comprises the CP of the next OFDM symbol. FIG. 5B illustrates an example of a preamble 520. As illustrated, when M=2 or M=4, the CAP may start at 521, which is a time instant within an OFDM symbol 527. For chips of the CAP in the OFDM symbol 528, the first chip 522 / 523 starts at a start of the OFDM symbol 528 excluding the CP, and the last chip 524 / 525 ends at an end of the CP of the next OFDM symbol 529.

[0128] For example, the (M*K + H) -th or (M*K+ H + 1) -th OOK chip (ahigh / low voltage signal) may end at the end of an CP, where K=0, 1, 2, … For example, the (M*K + H +1) -th or (M*K + H +2) -th OOK chip (ahigh / low voltage signal) may start from a start of an OFDM symbol excluding CP, where K=0, 1, 2, … H is a number related to the number of OOK chips in the first OFDM symbol of the CAP, e.g., the number of chips of CAP in the OFDM symbol 527 as illustrated in FIG. 5B. For example, H may be determined based on M*h, where h is a number not larger than 1, e.g., h=1 / 2, 3 / 4, etc.

[0129] In some examples, the ON-OFF pattern, for CAP based on M value in the first subset, may include a number of repetitions of [1 0] or [0 1] pattern, and the repetition number is a number not smaller than 1.

[0130] In some implementations, an M value in the second subset is used for the CAP, in this case, the CAP may start from a start of an OFDM symbol, or may start from a time instance in an OFDM symbol. In some example embodiments, a duration of the CAP that is based on an M value in the second subset may equal to or be shorter than one OFDM symbol, e.g., 0.25, 0.5, or 0.75 OFDM symbols.

[0131] In some examples, the M value is in a second subset, and the CAP starts from a time instance within an OFDM symbol, that is from the middle of the OFDM symbol. In some examples, the CAP may end at the end of the OFDM symbol. In some examples, a duration of the CAP may be shorter than a length of the OFDM symbol, such as a half of the OFDM symbol duration, a third of the OFDM symbol duration, a fourth (or 3 / 4) of the OFDM symbol duration. In some examples, the ON-OFF pattern may include a number of repetitions of [1 0] or [0 1] pattern or combinations of [1 0] and [0 1] . FIG. 5C illustrates an example of a preamble 530. As illustrated, when M=8 or M=16, the CAP starts at 531 which is a time instance within the OFDM symbol 539, and ends at 532 which is the end of the OFDM symbol 539. As illustrated, the CAP does not cross a boundary of an OFDM symbol, and a duration of the CAP is shorter than the OFDM duration.

[0132] In some examples, the M value is in a second subset, and the CAP starts from a start of an OFDM symbol including or excluding the CP. In some examples, a duration of the CAP may equal to a length of the OFDM symbol. In some examples, the ON-OFF pattern may include a number of repetitions of [1 0] or [0 1] pattern or combinations of [1 0] and [0 1] . For example, the number of repetitions is not smaller than 1.

[0133] In some examples, when the M value is larger than a threshold (such as 8, 9, or another value) , the last consecutive multiple chips of the CAP are low voltage chips. For example, an association between the M value and a number of the last consecutive multiple chips is predefined.

[0134] For example, when the M value is large than 8, the ON-OFF pattern of CAP may include N consecutive OOK-ON chips or OOK-OFF chips, e.g., at the end of the CAP or end of an OFDM symbol, where N is associated with the M value. For instance, if the M value is not smaller than 16, N is determined based on 2*floor (M / 16) or 2*floor [ (Ncp / Nchip) *a] , where Ncp is the CP duration and Nchip is the OOK chip duration, a is a number and a may be associated with the value of M, e.g., a=1, 1.5, or 2 for different values of M. For example, N = 2*floor (M / 16) or N = 2*floor [ (Ncp / Nchip) *2] .

[0135] For example, the association between the M value and N may be defined as: for M=16, N=2; for M=24, N = 2; for M=32, N =4; for M = 46, N =4; and M=64, N=8. It is understood that association is only for illustration without any limitation. In some examples, the association may be represented by a function, a table, a mapping list, or the like, the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0136] FIG. 5D illustrates an example of a preamble 540. As illustrated, when M=8 or M=16, the CAP starts from a start of the OFDM symbol 549 and ends at the end of the OFDM symbol 549. As illustrated, when M=16, the last two chips 545 of the CAP may be with low voltage, e.g., two consecutive OOK-OFF chips. As such, there will be beneficial for the CP of the OFDM symbol 549.

[0137] FIG. 5E illustrates an example of a preamble 550. As illustrated, when M=8 or M=16, the CAP starts from a start of the OFDM symbol 559 and ends at the end of the OFDM symbol 559. As illustrated, when M=16, the last two chips 555 of the CAP may be with high voltage, e.g., two consecutive OOK-ON chips. As such, there will be beneficial for the CP of the OFDM symbol 559.

[0138] Referring back to FIG. 4, the first device 201 transmits the R2D transmission at 420. At the other side of communication, the second device 202 detects to receives the preamble for the R2D transmission, and accordingly receive the R2D transmission based on the preamble at 430.

[0139] In some implementations, the second device 202 may detect SIP. The second device 202 may start to detect (or measure or receive) the CAP after detecting SIP.

[0140] In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may assume the first duration or the second duration, and may detect (or measure or receive) the CAP based on the assumed duration. In some example embodiments, blind detecting may be used by the second device 202 to detect the CAP. In some examples, the M value may be determined based on the detect CAP. For example, the second device 202 may determine that a chip duration of PRDCH is the same as that of CAP.

[0141] In some example embodiments, the SIP may end at an end of an OFDM symbol, the second device 202 may assume that the CAP starts from a start of CP or from an end of a CP of a next OFDM symbol. In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may assume that the CAP starts with a high (or low) voltage signal after the SIP, a duration of which may be assumed to equal to a CP length. For example, in a case like M=16 as shown in FIG. 5D or FIG. 5E, the last N consecutive chips in the CAP may be interpreted by the second device 202 as a part of the CAP or not a part of the CAP.

[0142] In addition, the second device 202 receives the PRDCH based on the detected CAP (which includes CAP1 and CAP2) at 230. In some examples, the second device 202 may receive the PRDCH based on the determined M value or the chip length for PRDCH.

[0143] Accordingly, the second device may determine chip duration of the PRDCH based on the CAP.

[0144] According to embodiments with reference to FIGS. 4-5E, at least two subsets of M values are configured with different durations for CAP. In some examples, a small M value may correspond to a longer duration of CAP than that for a large M value. As such, a required CAP duration can be relatively short due to a short chip duration for M values in a second subset (e.g., exceeding a threshold) , therefore a handling for the CAP can be easily made. In other words, it is beneficial to divide the set of candidate M values into two or more subsets and use different CAP durations (and also start time) for different subsets, in this way, the CP can be better handled and the overhead may be reduced.

[0145] In should be noted that some example embodiments above may be combined into some other embodiments. In some examples, the CAP may include a first part (CAP1) and a second part (CAP2) , where a duration of the second part may be a first duration or a second duration. In some examples, there may be a D2R transmission in FIG. 2 or FIG. 4.

[0146] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the first device which may perform the method 600 can be the first device 201, such as the terminal device 120 or the network device 130 discussed above in FIG. 1A.
