Abstract

Provided a base drum bucket(100) for a portable drum kit. The base drum bucket(100) includes a striking side which when stuck by a base drum beater provides a base drum sound and the base drum bucket(100) comprises a body portion for containing percussion elements of a portable drum kit, and a plurality of retractable support posts(130). The support posts support percussion elements of a drum kit and support posts are movable between a retracted position and an extended position. The retractable support posts(130) include a locking mechanism for locking the support posts as a requisite extended position.

Description

PORTABLE DRUM AND DRUM SET, AND PARTS THEREOFTechnical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of musical instruments and more particularly relates to a drum, drum set and parts thereof, and more specifically to a drum set which includes bucket type base member for storing drum components of a drum kit during storage or transportation.Background of the Invention

[0002] A drum kit, drum set or trap set, is a set or collection of drums and other percussion instruments which are set up so as to be played by a percussionist by striking the instruments.

[0003] A traditional drum kit consists of a mix of drums, including for example snare drums, a bass drum, tom tom, cymbals, and may also include a woodblock and cowbell for example.

[0004] Traditional drum sets are typically large and comprise both a large number of components and components, many of which are large in size and are often difficult to place and transport.

[0005] Traditional drum sets are not always ideal, in particular for students, drum sets are both expensive and they take up a lot of space. Traditional drum sets are also not always ideal for a classroom setting, whereby the goal is to teach students how to play the drums. More recently kits have also included electronic instruments, Hornbostel-Sachs classification 53, with both hybrid and entirely electronic kits now in common use.

[0006] A standard modern drum kit, such as is used in popular music and also as is taught in many music schools, contains typically a snare drum mounted on a stand, placed between the player's knees and played with drum sticks, which may include rutes or brushes; a bass drum, played by a pedal operated typically by the right foot of the player; and one or more cymbals, played with the sticks. A kit may also include tom-tom type drums.

[0007] All of these instruments are classed as non-pitched percussion, allowing for the music to be scored using percussion notation, for which a loose semi-standardized form exists for the drum kit.

[0008] If some or all of such instruments are replaced by electronic drums, the scoring and most often positioning remains the same, thus allowing a standard teaching approach.

[0009] Adrum kit is usually played by a player seated on a drum stool or throne. A drum kit differs in general from those traditional instruments that produce melody or chords / pitch per se, even though drums are often placed musically alongside others that do provide chords or pitch, such as the piano or stringed instruments.

[0010] As is known, many drummers extend their kits from this basic pattern or arrangement, adding more drums, more cymbals, and other instruments which include pitched percussion.

[0011] In some styles of music particular extensions are normal, for example double bass drums are often used in heavy metal music. On the other extreme although more rarely, some performers omit certain elements from even the basic setup, also dependent on the style of music and individual preferences.

[0012] Object of the Invention

[0013] It is an objective of the present invention to provide a drum, drum set and parts thereof, which overcome or at least partially ameliorate some of the deficiencies as associated with those of the prior art.Summary of the Invention

[0014] In a first aspect, the present invention provides a base drum bucket for a portable drum kit, wherein said base drum bucket includes a striking side which when stuck by a base drum beater provides a base drum sound and wherein said base drum bucket comprises a body portion for containing percussion elements of a portable drum kit, and a plurality of retractable support posts, wherein said support posts support percussion elements of a drum kit and wherein said support posts are movable between a retracted position and an extended position, and wherein said retractable support posts include a locking mechanism for locking the support posts as a requisite extended position.

[0015] The support post may include an upper portion and a lower portion, where in the upper portion is slidingly engageable with respect to the lower portion, and wherein in the lower portion it disposed within the body portion of the bass drum bucket.

[0016] The support post may include a locking mechanism for locking the upper support portion relative to the lower support portion at said requisite extended position. The locking mechanism is preferably disposed external of the body portion of the base drum bucket.

[0017] The bass drum bucket may include an upper portion and a lower portion, and wherein the locking mechanism is disposed external of the base drum bucket and abutted against the upper surface of the upper portion. The lower portion of the support post may be abutted against an inner surface of the body portion of the bass drum bucket.

[0018] The support post may include an engagement mechanism and a complimentary fixation element extends through the body portion of the base from bucket from external of the bass drum bucket and engages with said engagement mechanism, such that the locking mechanism is urged against the upper surface of the upper portion, such that the upper portion is urged against the lower portion, so as to affix the upper portion and the lower portion relative to each other.

[0019] The upper portion may include an opening portion which is hingedly engaged with the remaining portion of the upper portion which allows for the opening of the bass drum bucket 1 and the access to the inside of the bass drum bucket.

[0023] The support post may include an upper portion and a lower portion, where in the upper portion is slidingly engageable with respect to the lower portion, and wherein in the lower portion it disposed within the body portion of a bass drum bucket.

[0042] INVENTION BACKGROUND:

[0043] The present invention is directed towards a bass drum bucket for a portable drum kit. The bass drum bucket is designed and configured so as to be able to contain various percussion elements of a drum kit inside the bucket, during transportation and storage.

[0044] Advantageously, the bass drum bucket provides the functional attribute of being a bass drum, whilst also being able to carry and store percussion elements such as snare drums, TomTom drums, cymbals and the like, as well as pedals for the bass drum and also other pedals such as for a hi-hat cymbal.

[0045] DEFICIENCIES IN PRIOR ART

[0046] Whilst there do exist other portable drum kits such as that for carrying percussion elements therein, the present inventor has identified disadvantages with such drum kits of the prior art, which include:

[0047] (i) difficulty in assembly,

[0048] (ii) numerous pieces requiring configuration wherein use,

[0049] (iii) extensive time for assembly,

[0050] (iv) extensive time for disassembly, and

[0051] (v) instability of the support of percussion elements.

[0052] Other disadvantages of the prior art include:

[0053] (i) complexity in assembling bass drum striker pedals,

[0054] (ii) complications in manufacture, and

[0055] (iii) excessive costs in manufacture.

[0056] PRESENT INVENTION

[0057] Referring to Figure 1a to Figure 1 i, there is shown an exemplary embodiment of a bass drum bucket 100 of an embodiment of the present invention.

[0058] The base drum bucket 100 is hollow so as to contain and store various percussion elements of a drum kit, and is comprised of a lower portion 110 and an upper portion 120 which is seated above and on top of the lower portion 110. The upper portion includes an opening portion 122, which is hingedly engaged with the remaining portion of the upper portion 120, which allows for the opening of the bass drum bucket 100 and the access to the inside of the bass drum bucket 100.

[0059] In the present embodiment, the bass drum bucket 100 includes a retractable bass drum pedal support 140 disposed at the right-hand side of the bass drum bucket for supporting a bass drum assembly including pedal 142 operably engaged with a bass drum striker 144 which strikes the bass drum bucket so that the bass drum bucket provides the function of being a bass drum for a drum kit.

[0060] Conveniently, the bass drum assembly can be stowed or stored within the bass drum bucket 100, and then, when required, removed from the bass drum bucket and engaged with the bass drum pedal support 140. Then, when no longer required, the bass drum assembly is stored within the bass drum bucket 100, and the bass drum pedal support retracted into a retractive position such as is shown in Figure 1g.

[0061] Also and advantageously, the embodiment of the present invention also includes a retractable hi-hat cymbal pedal support 150 as is shown in the retracted configuration for example in Figure 1d operability, when deployed, the hi-hat cymbal pedal support 150 as is shown in Figure 1 i supports a hi-hat cymbal pedal152 which is operatively connected to a hi-hat cymbal 154 in use. Similarly, hi-hat cymbal pedal support 150 can be retracted when not in use, and the hi-hat cymbal pedal 152 and the hi-hat cymbal 154 can be stowed within the bass drum bucket 100 when not in use and during transport.

[0062] Advantageously, the retractable bass drum pedal support 140 retractable hi-hat cymbal pedal support 150 provide a constant positioning of the pedals and provides the these are the assembly and disassembly and maintains the drum kit as a single unit.

[0063] The present invention includes a retractable support post 130, which is operable from external of the bass drum bucket 100, and can be extended upwardly from the base drum bucket 100 to a desired location or height the support post supports percussion elements such as drums as shown in Figure 1 i at requisite heights for a musician or player using a drum kit.

[0064] The bass drum bucket 100 of the present invention may be formed from polymeric material, and maybe formed by way of a molding process. As will be understood, in other or alternate embodiments, the bass drum bucket 100 may be formed from other materials or by other manufacturing processes, all of which will be understood to fall within the scope of the present invention.

[0065] Referring now to Figure 2a, 2b and 2c, there are shows a perspective view of an embodiment of a support post 200 in accordance with the present invention, in a fully retracted configuration, a partially extended configuration and in a fully extended configuration. The support post as shown in the present embodiment is substantially the same as that as depicted in the preceding embodiment in Figures 1a –1 i.

[0066] In the present embodiment, the support post 200 includes a lower portion 210 which is disposed within a bass drum bucket such as that as described in accordance with the present invention above and an upper portion 220 which is slidingly engageable with the lower portion of 210, and whereby the lower portion 220 restricts lateral movement of the upper portion 220 yet provides for axial relative movement between the lower portion 210 and the upper portion 220.

[0067] The upper portion 220 is a fixable at a requisite height by a locking mechanism provided by fixation element 230 which, as depicted in the present embodiment is a clamping type device which moves from a release position to a fixing position so as to allow for sliding engagement and to restrict or inhibit sliding engagement between the upper portion 220 and the lower portion 210.

[0068] The upper portion of 220 includes an engagement portion 222 for engagement with a complimentary engagement portion on a percussion element, so that the support post 200 can support a percussion element such as a drum, cymbal or the like, as is described above.

[0072] Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown a sectional view of a bass drum bucket 300 and a support post 300 in accordance with the present invention. The present sectional view is representative of the bass drum bucket in accordance with the previous embodiments as well as the support post as described and shown in reference to the previous embodiments.

[0073] As is shown, the bass drum bucket 300 includes a lower portion 310 and an upper portion 320 which includes a movable lid portion 322 hinge idly engaged so as to allow access two within the body of the bass drum bucket 300 for the storage and transportation of percussion elements for a drum kit.

[0084] Compared with support posts as provided by the prior art for similar such bass drum bucket devices, the prior art devices are not provided in a secure manner and in many cases are a separate element and are not provided in a manner which opposes lateral forces.

[0085] As will be understood by those skilled in the art, percussion element such as a drum is not hit from above and as such, they will always be electoral component of the force from a drumstick when applied to such a percussion element and as such, the support post must be able to resist movement and is sufficiently stable in the lateral direction as well as in the vertical direction.

[0086] Support posts of the prior art which merely slot into a hole in the bass drum bucket do not provide the level of resistance to lateral forces which the present invention by way of effectively a cantilevered upper support member, which is provided by the present invention.

[0087] Furthermore, support posts of the prior art are removable and as such, require alignment and fixation when affixed to a bass drum bucket, which causes complications and also may not provide the requested support and strength for the support of percussion element.

[0088] Still further, support posts of the prior art, in some examples, are not linear and have a bend at a requisite angle and as such, such support posts cannot be retractable within a base drum bucket as provided by the present invention.

[0089] The present invention provides numerous advantages over the prior art, including, yet not limited to:

[0090] (i) ease of deployment when setting up a drum kit,

[0091] (ii) is a retraction when disassembling a drum kit,

[0092] (iii) ensures that no support posts are lost or misplaced,

[0093] (iv) ensures that they support the posts at present when required when performance or operation of the drum kit is required,

[0094] (v) resistance to lateral loads during the striking of percussion elements,

[0095] (vi) ease of manufacture,

[0096] (vii) ease of assembly of bass drum bucket,

[0097] (viii) provides for adjustability of height of percussion elements, and

[0098] (ix) simplicity of operation.

Claims

1.A base drum bucket for a portable drum kit, wherein said base drum bucket includes a striking side which when stuck by a base drum beater provides a base drum sound and wherein said base drum bucket comprises:a body portion for containing percussion elements of a portable drum kit, anda plurality of retractable support posts, wherein said support posts support percussion elements of a drum kit and wherein said support posts are movable between a retracted position and an extended position, and wherein said retractable support posts include a locking mechanism for locking the support posts as a requisite extended position.2.A base drum bucket according to claim 1, wherein the support post includes an upper portion and a lower portion, where in the upper portion is slidingly engageable with respect to the lower portion, and wherein in the lower portion it disposed within the body portion of the bass drum bucket.3.A bass drum bucket according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the support post includes a locking mechanism for locking the upper support portion relative to the lower support portion at said requisite extended position.4.A bass drum bucket according to claim 3, wherein the locking mechanism is disposed external of the body portion of the base drum bucket.5.A bass drum bucket according to claim 4, wherein the bass drum bucket includes an upper portion and a lower portion, and wherein the locking mechanism is disposed external of the base drum bucket and abutted against the upper surface of the upper portion.6.A bass drum bucket according to claim 5, wherein the lower portion of the support post is abutted against an inner surface of the body portion of the bass drum bucket.7.A bass drum bucket according to claim 6, wherein the support post includes an engagement mechanism and a complimentary fixation element extends through the body portion of the base from bucket from external of the bass drum bucket and engages with said engagement mechanism, such that the locking mechanism is urged against the upper surface of the upper portion, such that the upper portion is urged against the lower portion, so as to affix the upper portion and the lower portion relative to each other.8.A base drum bucket according to any one of claims 2 to 7, wherein upper portion includes an opening portion which is hingedly engaged with the remaining portion of the upper portion which allows for the opening of the bass drum bucket 1 and the access to the inside of the bass drum bucket.9.A base drum bucket according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the base drum bucket is substantially enclosed in use.10.A bass drum bucket according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the body portion is formed from a polymeric material.11.A retractable support post for support percussion elements of a portable base drum bucket of drum kit, wherein said support posts are movable between a retracted position and an extended position, and wherein said retractable support posts include a locking mechanism for locking the support posts as a requisite extended position.12.A retractable support post, wherein the support post includes an upper portion and a lower portion, where in the upper portion is slidingly engageable with respect to the lower portion, and wherein in the lower portion it disposed within the body portion of a bass drum bucket.13.A retractable support post according to claim 11 or claim 12, wherein the support post includes a locking mechanism for locking the upper support portion relative to the lower support portion at said requisite extended position.14.A retractable support post according to claim 13, wherein the locking mechanism is disposed external of body portion of the base drum bucket.15.A portable drum kit comprising a base drum bucket according to claims 1 to 10, and a plurality of percussion elements.
