The combination of heat exposure, repeated opening of the packaging, and potential contact with water or skin may increase the risk of microbial contamination and the growth of microorganisms. Accordingly, there is a need for antimicrobial agents or an-timicrobial systems in sunscreen formulations in order to ensure microbiological stability and product safety during storage and use.

[0014] Accordingly, sunscreen formulations typically comprise one or more antimicrobial agents in order to inhibit microbial growth and to preserve the microbiological integrity of the product throughout its shelf life and during consumer use. However, many commonly used antimicrobial agents in cosmetic formulations have only limited suitability to be used in sunscreen formulations. Therefore, finding antimicrobial agents, which are effective, consumer-acceptable, compatible with various UV filters I absorbers and stable across the typical pH range of many sunscreen formulations is a significant challenge.

[0015] Many sunscreen products are formulated as emulsions comprising an aqueous phase and an oil phase. Under the above-described conditions, in particular upon prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures and sunlight, such emulsions may become unstable and may partially separate into different phases. Such phase separation is highly undesirable as it compromises the product's homogeneity, sensory properties, and UV-protective efficacy, rendering the formulation unsuitable for consumer use.

[0016] Hydroxypropyl benzoate was found to be a multifunctional cosmetic agent, which enhances the solubility of lipophilic ingredients, which possesses antimicrobial properties and at the same time acts as emulsion stabilizer, while respecting the balance of the skin microbiome.

[0017] As described above, sunscreen compositions are complex mixtures and providing good emulsion stability is always a challenge. It was found that even with hydroxypropyl benzoate, many sunscreen compositions did not succeed in the emulsion stability tests and the preservative efficacy testing. Thus, many sunscreen compositions were not considered acceptable even though hydroxypropyl benzoate was included.

[0018] The primary object of the present invention was thus to provide a sunscreen formulation, particularly a sunscreen formulation with hydroxypropyl benzoate, which provides high physical emulsion stability and preferably a high protection against microbial contamination. More particularly, an object was to identify a combination of hydroxypropyl benzoate with specific solubilizers, yielding a sunscreen formulation that exhibits outstanding physical emulsion stability and robust protection against microbial contamination, even under stress conditions.The primary object of the present invention is solved by a sunscreen composition comprising

[0025] It was surprisingly found that combining hydroxypropyl benzoate with a solubilizer selected from the group consisting of 1 ,3-propanediol, 1 ,2-pentanediol, 1 ,2-hexanediol, 1 ,2-hepta-nediol, 1 ,2-octanediol, and ethylhexylglycerin, provided improved physical emulsion stability as well as microbial stability such that an acceptable sunscreen composition was obtained.

[0026] Moreover, this was further surprising, since the usually excellent solubilizer and solvent 1 ,2-propylene glycol did not provide such emulsion stability. This was particularly surprising, since 1 ,2-propylene glycol is widely used as solubilizer and solvent.

[0027] In contrast, the solubilizer(s) selected from the group consisting of 1 ,3-propanediol, 1 ,2-pentanediol, 1 ,2-hexanediol, 1 ,2-heptanediol, 1 ,2-octanediol, and ethylhexylglycerin provided an increased emulsion stability and led to an increased antimicrobial effect in the sunscreen.

[0308] Premix Phase A without Neo Heliopan 310 and Keltrol® CG-SFT. Heat up to 40°-50°C and sprinkle Neo Heliopan 310 on the surface. Then heat up to 85°C and disperse the Keltrol® CG-SFT in the hot oil phase by using an Ultra-Turrax®.
