Description

HAY.001027. WO INTERNATIONAL PCTSTABTLTZING BLANKET APPARATUSInventors: Leah Agus WestbrookWilliam Hays WestbrookApplicant: Cloudfit LLCTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This disclosure relates to bedding, and more particularly to stabilizing blanket apparatus with fitted skirt.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] Conventional blankets are commonly used on mattresses in conjunction with fitted sheets for everyday bedding needs. While fitted sheets remain taut on the mattress due to elasticized edges, ordinary blankets often rest freely atop the sheet and can shift or slide during normal use. The movement of these blankets can create undesirable bunching and require frequent repositioning to maintain a neat and comfortable sleeping surface. This repeated effort to straighten a blanket can be time-consuming, particularly in settings where maintaining a crisp bed appearance is a priority. Additionally, blanket sliding may expose users to cold air at night or cause disruption when multiple occupants share the bed.SUMMARY OF INVENTIONTechnical Problem

[0003] Conventional blankets often rest freely atop a fitted sheet and frequently shift or slide during normal use, creating undesirable bunching that requires repeated, time-consuming repositioning to maintain a neat appearance. This movement can also expose users to cold air during the night or cause disruptions when multiple occupants share the bed.Solution to Problem

[0004] A stabilizing blanket apparatus is disclosed that integrates a fitted skirt with a blanket to prevent the blanket from shifting or sliding off a mattress. The fitted skirt is configured to wrap around the mattress much like a fitted sheet, incorporating elasticized elements to secure it along the sides and beneath the mattress. At selected attachment points, the blanket is coupled to the fitted skirt, leaving a portion of the blanket free to fold back for quick and easy access to theHAY.001027. WO INTERNATIONAL PCTbed. In some embodiments, the blanket includes an opening at the upper rim of the fitted skirt to expose the underlying fitted sheet, while in other embodiments the apparatus can cover the mattress fully without requiring a separate fitted sheet. Corner structures at the intersections of boundary portions conform to the mattress corners, enhancing the stability of the skirt.

[0005] The blanket may include an overhang feature at its periphery to fully or partially conceal the fitted skirt. Reinforced stitching at terminal ends accommodates repeated folding of the blanket without compromising structural integrity. The blanket can be sized for various mattress dimensions and may be filled to serve as a comforter, while both the blanket and fitted skirt can be fabricated from flexible fabrics to facilitate easy laundering and bed-making. The disclosed apparatus offers a convenient solution for maintaining a neat appearance of the bed, streamlining the bed-making process, and ensuring the blanket remains securely positioned. Advantageous Effects of Invention

[0006] The disclosed stabilizing blanket apparatus effectively solves the problem of shifting bedding by integrating a fitted skirt that secures the blanket to the mattress, much like a fitted sheet. By anchoring the blanket via the fitted skirt's elasticized elements and corner structures, the apparatus ensures the blanket remains substantially in place even during use, significantly reducing the likelihood of slipping or bunching. This configuration streamlines the bed-making process and maintains a consistently neat appearance without requiring constant adjustment.

[0007] Additionally, the apparatus offers functional flexibility through its specific stitching configuration. Because the skirt stitching couples only a portion of the blanket to the skirt while leaving the upper half decoupled, users retain easy access to the bed and can fold the blanket back quickly. The inclusion of a blanket overhang further enhances the aesthetic by concealing the fitted skirt, while reinforced stitching at terminal ends ensures durability against repeated folding.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0038] Now turning to the drawings, FIG.1-4 show a stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) in accordance with a first illustrated embodiment. The stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) is shown engaged to a mattress (10) that comprises a top section (11), a bottom section (12) opposite the top section (11), and a plurality of side sections (13) extending therebetween. The plurality of side sections (13) includes an upper side section (14), a lower side section (15), a first lateral side section (16), and a second lateral side section (17). The intersection of two of the plurality of side sections (13) with the bottom section (12) forms a plurality of lower corners (18). A conventional fitted sheet (19) is shown wrapped over the mattress (10) and covers the entire top section (11), each of the plurality of side sections (13), and a portion of the bottom section (12), including each lower corner (18). It will be appreciated that the disclosed stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) can be used in conjunction with any conventional fitted sheet without requiring alteration of the fitted sheet itself.

[0039] The stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) includes a blanket (110) and a fitted skirt (130) coupled together. The blanket (110) has a top surface (111) and a bottom surface (112) opposite the top surface (111). A perimeter ofthe blanket (110) is defined by atop periphery (113), a bottom periphery (114), a first lateral periphery (115), and a second lateral periphery (116). A midsection (117) of the blanket (110) corresponds to the geographic midpoint of the mattress (10) when the stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) is coupled thereto, effectively dividing the blanket (110) into an upper half (118) and a lower half (119). In one embodiment, the blanket (110) includes a blanket overhang (120) along its bottom periphery (114), first lateral periphery (115), and second lateral periphery (116) to ensure coverage of the fitted skirt (130). In some versions, the blanket (110) may include fill material to serve as a comforter, while still maintaining a flexible structure suitable for easy folding and positioning.

[0040] The fitted skirt (130) comprises a plurality of boundary portions (131) that include a top boundary portion (132), a bottom boundary portion (133), a first side boundary portion (134), and a second side boundary portion (135). Each boundary portion (131) is configured to engage a corresponding side section of the mattress (10). The top boundary portion (132) aligns with the upper side section (14), the bottom boundary portion (133) aligns with the lower side section (15), the first side boundary portion (134) aligns with the first lateral side section (16), and the secondHAY.001027. WO INTERNATIONAL PCTside boundary portion (135) aligns with the second lateral side section (17). The plurality of boundary portions (131) forms an upper rim (136) and a lower rim (138), with an opening (137) disposed between the upper rim (136) so that the conventional fitted sheet (19) disposed on the top section (11) of the mattress (10) is exposed through the opening (137). In certain embodiments, the upper rim (136) is positioned below the top section (11) of the mattress (10) to avoid interfering with the conventional fitted sheet (19). Conversely, in other embodiments, the fitted skirt (130) may be devoid of such an opening (137) and include an upper layer of fabric connected to the upper rim (136) to cover the top section (11) of the mattress (10), thus dispensing with the need for a conventional fitted sheet (19). The lower rim (138) is configured to wrap under the mattress (10) and engage the bottom section (12). To achieve a snug and secure fit, the lower rim (138) is provided with an elasticized element (139) that exerts tension around the side sections (13) of the mattress (10) in a manner similar to a conventional fitted sheet. A plurality of corner structures (140), each formed at the junction of two boundary portions (131), conforms around the lower corners (18) of the mattress (10). These corner structures (140) help maintain the fitted skirt (130) in a stable position during use and when the blanket (110) is folded down for access.

[0041] The blanket (110) is coupled to the fitted skirt (130) by skirt stitching (141), which is illustrated in red for clarity. This skirt stitching (141) joins the upper rim (136) of the bottom boundary portion (133), along with a portion of the upper rim (136) of both the first side boundary portion (134) and the second side boundary portion (135), to the bottom surface (112) of the blanket (110). The blanket (110) is thereby secured to the fitted skirt (130) along the lower half (119) and a portion of the upper half (118), while another portion of the upper half (118) remains free of stitching. The resulting unstitched portion allows the upper half (118) of the blanket (110) to fold and disengage from the fitted skirt (130) for quick and easy access. The skirt stitching (141) terminates at terminal ends (142), which define the specific points where coupling between the blanket (110) and the fitted skirt (130) ceases. Because repeated folding of the blanket (110) can stress these terminal ends (142), reinforced stitching (143) is applied at these areas to ensure durability over time. In some embodiments, the terminal ends (142) are located on the upper half (118) of the blanket (110) so that only a portion of the upper half (118) is free to fold away. In other embodiments, the terminal ends (142) may be placed at the midsection (117) so that the entire upper half (118) can fold away. In yet another embodiment, the terminal ends (142) can be positioned in the lower half (119) to allow both the entire upper half (118) and part of the lowerHAY.001027. WO INTERNATIONAL PCThalf (119) to disengage from the fitted skirt (130). Alternatively, the skirt stitching (141) may extend along the entirety of the first and second boundary portions (134, 135), thereby coupling the entire upper half (118) of the blanket (110) to the fitted skirt (130) without any foldable portion.

[0042] The blanket overhang (120) incorporated into the bottom periphery (114), the first lateral periphery (115), and the second lateral periphery (116) effectively covers one or more of the boundary portions (131) of the fitted skirt (130). In some embodiments, the blanket overhang (120) is dimensioned to completely cover the respective boundary portions (131) so that the fitted skirt (130) is concealed when the blanket (110) is fully extended on the mattress (10). For instance, the bottom boundary portion (133), the first side boundary portion (134), and the second side boundary portion (135) may be fully covered by the blanket overhang (120). In the illustrated embodiment, the top periphery (113) does not extend beyond the top boundary portion (132) of the fitted skirt (130) and instead the top periphery (113) aligns with the top section (11) of the mattress (10). However, in alternative designs, the top periphery (113) may also include a similar overhang for stylistic or functional purposes.

[0043] The described stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) provides numerous benefits. By securing the blanket (110) with the fitted skirt (130) around the mattress (10), the blanket (110) remains substantially in place even when partially folded or when in use, thereby simplifying bed making and reducing the likelihood of blankets shifting or slipping off. Users still retain easy access to the mattress (10) and sheets beneath, particularly where the opening (137) and the unstitching along a portion of the upper half (118) permit the blanket (110) to be folded back. While the illustrated embodiment is shown sized for a queen mattress based on the exemplary dimensions displayed, it should be understood that the stabilizing blanket apparatus (100) may be sized for a variety of mattress dimensions, including twin, full, king, or other sizes as desired. Both the blanket (110) and the fitted skirt (130) can be fabricated from a wide range of flexible fabrics, such as polycotton microfiber, to provide comfort, durability, and ease of care.

[0044] While various details, features, and combinations are described in the illustrated embodiments, one having skill in the art will appreciate a myriad of possible alternative combinations and arrangements of the features disclosed herein. As such, the descriptions are intended to be enabling only, and non-limiting. Instead, the spirit and scope of the invention is set forth in the appended claims.HAY.001027.
