[0112] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture comprises a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) at an IAB donor node. An IAB node comprises a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.

[0113] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0114] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other combination of the time, frequency, space and / or code domain resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0115] In the following, “sensing processing procedure” may refer to “sensing processing functionality” , “sensing processing engine” , “sensing processing operation” , “sensing processing process” , “sensing data processing functionality” , or the like.

[0116] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the specific example of FIG. 1, communication environment 100 comprises a plurality of communication network devices, including an apparatus 110, a first network entity 120, a second network entity 130, a third network entity 140, or a fourth network entity 150. As shown in FIG. 1, the apparatus 110, the first network entity 120, the second network entity 130, the third network entity 140, or the fourth network entity 150 may communicate with each other.

[0117] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with a terminal device such as UE, and / or a network device such as base station as an example of the apparatus 110, a sensing management function (SeMF) or a sensing function (SF) as an example of the first network entity 120, a sensing processing function (SePF) as an example of the second network entity 130, a sensing operation repository function as an example of the third network entity 140, a sensing output repository function as an example of the fourth network entity 150.

[0118] It is to be understood that the number of network devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. In the other example embodiments, the communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implement example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0119] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0120] Currently, the goal of sensing service is to obtain awareness of the scene surrounding a sensing device, for example, including the capability to detect, localize, and track objects, the capability to form images, and / or the capability to extract features for recognition or classification purposes. However, the integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) that has been recently proposed may help to potentially achieve both high-data rate communications and high-resolution obstacle detection using the same hardware and spectrum resource. This may help to increase sensing capabilities, to improve sensing accuracy for scenarios or situations that traditional sensing techniques may not perform well (e.g., non-line of sight (NLOS) conditions, requirement for high velocity resolution, etc. ) , to enhance spectrum efficiency by sharing communication and sensing spectrum band, and to eventually reduce hardware and installation cost by combining sensing and communication equipment or hardware.

[0121] Different types of services and target vertical applications may benefit from the integrated sensing and communication services. In some solutions, different use cases and corresponding technical requirements have been described to make use of 5G-based sensing services, for example, intrusion detection (such as intruder detection in smart homes, pedestrian / animal intrusion detection on highways) , support autonomous driving (such as sensing assisted automotive maneuvering and navigation, sensing for parking space determination, and so on) , support unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight (such as UAV flight trajectory tracing, network assisted sensing to avoid UAV collision) , support automated guided vehicle (AGV) and autonomous mobile robots (AMR) in factories (such as AGV detection and tracking in factories, AMR collision avoidance in smart factories) , environment or weather monitoring (such as rain, pollution, flooding) , health monitoring (such as fall detection, contactless sleep monitoring service, health monitoring at home) , extended reality, or the like.

[0122] In the following, a sensing management function may be responsible to receive different types of sensing request from a sensing client. In some examples, the sensing client may be UE, application function (AF) or network exposure function (NEF) . In addition, the SeMF may configure and coordinate sensing functions and collect sensing measurement (sensing data) and provide sensing data and / or sensing outputs to the sensing client either directly or via NEF (for example, if the requesting client is third party external application or AF) . The SeMF receives requests that include information about the type of the sensing area, the sensing QoS (optionally UE (s) that may be sensed) .

[0123] There are different sensing approaches or types that may be used in an integrated sensing and communication system. RAN nodes such as BS and / or UEs may participate in a sensing procedure either for monostatic sensing or for bi-static sensing, including monostatic RAN-based sensing, Bi-static RAN-based sensing, Bi-static RAN and UE sensing, and UE-based sensing. As for monostatic RAN-based sensing, a BS acts as transmitter or sounder for transmitting sensing signal and the same BS acts as a receiver or sensor for receiving sensing signal. In this case, the transmitting and receiving arrays are placed together in a system. As for Bi-static RAN-based sensing, a BS acts as transmitter or sounder for transmitting sensing signal and one or more other BSs act as receiver (s) or sensor (s) for receiving sensing signal. As for Bi-static RAN and UE sensing, in one example, RAN (such as BS) may transmit a sensing signal and UE (s) may receive it to obtain a sensing data; in another example, UE may transmit a sensing signal and RAN (e.g., BS) may receive it to obtain a sensing data.

[0124] In the following, sensing data may refer to sensing measurement or sensing measurement information, which may include data derived from radio signals impacted (e.g. reflected, refracted, diffracted) by an object or environment of interest for sensing purposes, and optionally processed (e.g., within a 5G / 6G system, external server, application server, edge server, etc. ) . In this case, sensing output (s) includes processed sensing data such as requested by a service consumer (or sensing client) .

[0125] There are several types of sensing services that an ISAC system may provide and many sensing clients (e.g. AF, UE) may request at the same period of time, the same or similar sensing services. Each sensing service request may have an overlap at least partially in terms of the sensing area, the sensing QoS, the type of objects that need to be tracked. The ISAC system with the reception of each sensing service request undertakes to realize the appropriate sensing operation to collect the appropriate sensing measurements that may be processed so as to derive the sensing outputs that a sensing service has requested. FIG. 2 illustrates an example diagram of an architecture related to sensing communication. As shown in FIG. 2, for the communication between the terminal device 210 and the network device 220, each sensing session may take up significant percentage of radio and processing resources. At the network entity 230 (such as core network device) , huge amount of sensing data may be processed both on RAN / UE side and core network side different kinds of approaches such as periodogram or the like. In addition, there are around 40 use cases and may be thousands of req / second for various AF / SF clients both internal to public land mobile network (PLMN) and external integrations.

[0126] However, each sensing operation is a demanding task in terms of required radio and computational resources for the processing of sensing data (especially for continuous sensing operations) , required sensing resources to achieve the target sensing QoS, required communication resources for data exchange and energy requirements. Hence, there is the need for the ISAC system to identify how to coordinate the multiple sensing operations for sensing request to save or optimize sensing and communication resources, energy and computational resources. The ISAC may consume significant percentage of both radio and processing resources and such consumption may not scale if number of requests grows. In this case, there are several problems need to be addressed, including: a way of an ISAC system identifying that a new sensing service request may have an overlap (or similarity) with an ongoing or existing sensing services; a way of determining whether to adapt existing sensing operation (s) and which existing sensing operation (s) to be adapted, for supporting of a new sensing service; a way of adapting one or more sensing operation at a UE and / or BS supporting ongoing and new sensing service requests; and a way of determining whether to adapt a processing procedure at the SePF and how to adapt for the support of a new sensing service.

[0127] In accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for coordination and management of sensing service requests. In operation, an apparatus receives a request associated with a sensing operation from a network entity, and the apparatus determines whether to update the sensing operation based on the request associated with the sensing operation. In addition, the apparatus transmits a response to the request associated with the sensing operation to the network entity. In another solution, the apparatus receives a request for combining a plurality of sensing service requests or sensing subscriptions from a network entity, and the apparatus determines that the plurality of sensing service requests or sensing subscriptions are combined based on information of the plurality of sensing service requests or sensing subscriptions. With the solutions above, resource utilization can be improved. Specifically, for sensing clients requesting the same or similar sensing services at the same period of time, whether and how to reuse and / or adapt sensing sessions can be determined, and a plurality of sensing operations can be combined.

[0128] In some example embodiments, a sensing operations repository function may be introduced to keep track of: the active sensing operations at each sensing device (UE, BS) and their latest state and configuration; and also to keep track of the active sensing processing procedures, their configuration and achieved sensing QoS. In some example embodiments, a SeMF may be enhanced to identify for a sensing service request, whether there are the sensing operations (from such as monostatic, multi-static) and / or sensing processing procedures that may be reused based on the attributes of the sensing service request and the state and status information of current sensing operations and sensing procedures retrieved by the sensing operations repository function. In some example embodiments, if overlap (similarity) has been detected, the SeMF may determine which are the required modifications that need to be made at ongoing sensing operations taking place at UEs and BS as well as sensing processing procedures that are taking place at the SePF (s) , so as to support the sensing sessions and a sensing service request.

[0129] In some example embodiments, the SeMF may transmit a request associated with a sensing operation to a BS or a UE. For example, the request associated with the sensing operation may be a sensing operation modification request, which instructs the changes to be applied on the ongoing sensing operations by the respective BS or UE, at the sensing resources configuration, sensing topology, sensing measurements. In some other example embodiments, the SeMF may transmit to the SePF modifications needed to ongoing sensing procedures and instructs to the SePF the required updates for the sensing data processing.

[0130] In some example embodiments, for a BS-based sensing, a RAN node (e.g., BS) may determine and notify the SeMF whether a sensing operation may be reused and how it may be modified, according to the requirements of a sensing service request and transmit the modification information to the SeMF. Alternatively, for a UE-based sensing, UEs may determine and notify the SeMF whether a sensing operation may be reused and how it may be modified, and then transmit the modification information to the SeMF.

[0131] In some example embodiments, the SeMF may determine that a sensing service request may be already served with a sensing service request session served by another SeMF, and then may redirect the sensing client (e.g. AF / NF) that has sent the service request to the target SeMF. Alternatively, the source SeMF may determine the target SeMF and forward the request to the target SeMF. In some example embodiments, the SeMF may determine the sensing operations not required in all the related session and the removal of the sensing operations may be triggered.

[0132] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. It is noted that the following accompanying drawings may be implemented separately or in any suitable combination, which is not limited in the present disclosure.

[0133] FIG. 3 illustrates an example diagram of associations between sensing service request, sensing session, sensing operation and sensing processing procedure according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3, a sensing service request ID is created by the SeMF for a received sensing service request from a sensing client. In addition, for the handling or management by the SeMF, a sensing session ID is created by the SeMF, and a sensing service request ID corresponds to a sensing session ID. The sensing session ID includes one or more sensing operation IDs for the one or more sensing operations associated with a BS and / or a UE. For example, for a monostatic sensing by a BS, a sensing operation ID may be assigned. For a sensing operation (monostatic or multi-static, at a UE or at a BS) , a sensing operation ID is created and is transmitted to the respective UEs and / or BS involved in the sensing operation. Moreover, a sensing session ID includes one sensing processing procedure ID, that refers to the sensing processing procedure at the SePF, according to the sensing data received by one more sensing operations (sensing operation IDs) .

[0154] FIG. 6 illustrates an example signaling flow 600 for determination about whether and how to reuse and / or adapt existing sensing sessions according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 600 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 400 of FIG. 4. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 6, UE (s) 610 and / or BS (s) 620 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 4, a SeMF 630 is an example of the first network entity 120 shown in FIG. 4, a sensing operations repository function 640 is an example of the third network entity 140 shown in FIG. 4, a SePF 650 is an example of the second network entity 130 shown in FIG. 4, a sensing outputs repository function 660 is an example of the fourth network entity 150 shown in FIG. 4, and an AF 670 is an example of the device 460 shown in FIG. 4.

[0155] A sensing client such as the AF 670 or UE transmits (6005) a sensing service request to the SeMF 630. The request includes information that are related with the sensing service type, a sensing area, a sensing configuration or filters information, sensing QoS requirements and the like. The SeMF 630 may use the inputs of the sensing client to determine a sensing operation request message and the target sensing sessions attributes, and the SeMF 630 transmits (6010) the sensing operation request to the sensing operations repository function 640. The sensing operations repository function 640 identifies (6015) the relevant sensing operations, and transmits (6020) a sensing operations response to the SeMF 630. The sensing operations response may include the sensing session ID, the relevant sensing operation IDs, and sensing area and sensing configuration information for the sensing operations. Based on the received sensing operations response, the SeMF 630 identifies (6025) candidate sensing operation (s) and transmits (6030) a sensing outputs request including the sensing session ID and a sensing outputs descriptor to the sensing outputs repository function 660. Furthermore, the sensing outputs repository function 660 derives (6035) information of sensing processing and outputs, and transmits (6040) a sensing outputs response to the SeMF 630, the sensing outputs response including the sensing processing ID, sensing session ID (s) , the type of sensing outputs (e.g., type of objects detected, object tracked, point cloud information) , achieved Sensing QoS (e.g., in terms of accuracy, resolution, latency to derive sensing outputs) .

[0156] Moreover, the SeMF 630 may determine (6045) whether one or more existing sensing operations may be reused for the sensing service request. In addition, the SeMF 630 may determine to adapt an existing sensing operation if there is need to adapt the existing sensing operation. In some example embodiments, which type of adaptation may be applied considering the missing feature of the ongoing sensing operations. For example, a determined modification may include one or more of the following: adding more sensing resources, such as increasing sensing range resolution; increasing the duration of sensing pulses, such as increasing sensing mobility resolution; modifying transmitter power, such as adjusting a sensing range; adding one transmitter and / or receiver device in a multi-static sensing operation to increase the sensing coverage; or modifying processing of measurements at the UE or BS receiver side, such as changing the power thresholds for the filtering of (target) points to build the point clouds. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.

[0157] According to the determined configuration, the SeMF 630 transmits (6050) the sensing configuration modification request to the relevant UE 610 and / or BS 620. The sensing configuration modification request may include the target UE ID or BS ID, the sensing session ID, the relevant sensing operation ID and an updated resources configuration and / or an updated sensing configuration based on the determined configuration. Based on the received sensing configuration modification request, the BS 620 may update (6055) the sensing operation or may not update the sensing operation. Alternatively, the UE 610 may update (6055) the sensing operation or may not update the sensing operation. Furthermore, the UE 610 and / or the BS 620 transmits (6060) the sensing configuration modification response indicating acceptance or rejection to the SeMF 630.

[0158] Furthermore, the SeMF 630 may determine (6065) whether existing sensing processing may be reused and if there is a need for an adaptation. In case of an adaptation or modification is needed, the SeMF 630 may transmit (6070) a sensing processing modification request to the SePF 650 including the sensing processing ID, the relevant sensing session ID (s) and an updated processing configuration. For example, the processing configuration may include at least one of the following: changing processing of existing sensing session ID and adding measurements from a new sensing operation or a modified sensing operation; combining data from different sensing session IDs; or changing the target object if another object signature may be used in the filtering. Alternatively, the SeMF 630 may transmit (6070) a sensing processing addition request to the SePF 650. The SePF 650 may update or create (6075) a new sensing processing procedure based on the determination of the SeMF 630. In addition, the SePF 650 may transmit (6080) a sensing processing modification response or a sensing processing addition response to the SeMF 630. Furthermore, the SeMF 630 transmits (6085) a sensing service response to the AF 670 (or any other sensing client) indicating the acceptance or not of the request. Thereinafter, the sensing service is executed and the network provides to the sensing client the requested sensing inputs. It is noted that the two repositories shown in FIG. 6 may be collocated.

[0159] FIG. 7 illustrates an example flowchart for the decision of reusing, modifying and / or establishing sensing operations and / or sensing procedures according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, FIG. 7 will be described with reference to FIG. 6, for example, some steps shown in FIG. 7 will be performed by a SeMF like the SeMF 630 in FIG. 6.

[0160] As shown in block 710, the SeMF collects information for ongoing sensing operations and processing procedures. In addition, at block 720, the SeMF determines whether existing sensing operations is reused. If the sensing operations may not be reused, it proceeds to block 730, and a new sensing operation procedure is determined and established, then a new sensing processing procedure is created at block 740. If the sensing operations may be reused, it proceeds to block 750, the SeMF determines if or how to adapt existing sensing operations and the adaptation is executed. Furthermore, at block 760, whether there is a need for new sensing operations is determined. If there is a need for new sensing operations, it proceeds to block 730, and a new sensing operation procedure is determined and established, then a new sensing processing procedure is created at block 740. If there is not a need for new sensing operations, it proceeds to block 770, to determine whether an existing sensing processing procedures may be reused. If the existing sensing processing procedures may not be reused, it proceeds to block 740 to create a new sensing processing procedure, then create the session ID and associate with the sensing request ID. If the existing sensing processing procedures may be reused, it proceeds to block 780 to determine if or how to adapt existing sensing processing procedures and execute adaptation, then create the session ID and associate with the sensing request ID.

[0161] The SeMF may determine the sensing operations not required in all the related session and may trigger the removal of the sensing operations. In case AF / NF service operations removal request leads to only the removal of the overlap, then there is no need to exchange any message with the sensing device but the successful response may be sent to AF / NF about the deletion of the service operations. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.

[0162] FIG. 8 illustrates an example signaling flow 800 for base station-based determination about whether and how to reuse and / or adapt existing sensing sessions according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 800 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 400 of FIG. 4. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 8, UE (s) 610 and / or BS (s) 620 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 4, SeMF 630 is an example of the first network entity 120 shown in FIG. 4. As shown in FIG. 8, the RAN such as BS 620 is the entity that controls the configuration and resources of a sensing operation, e.g., for BS-based sensing (monostatic or multi-static) then the BS is the entity responsible to determine whether a sensing operation may be reused or may be modified.

[0163] A sensing client such as the AF 670 or UE transmits (8005) a sensing service request to the SeMF 630. The request includes information that are related with the sensing service type, a sensing area, a sensing configuration or filters information, sensing QoS requirements and the like. The SeMF 630 may use the inputs of the sensing client to determine a sensing operation request message and the target sensing sessions attributes, and the SeMF 630 transmits (8010) the sensing operation request to the sensing operations repository function 640. The sensing operations repository function 640 identifies (8015) the relevant sensing operations, and transmits (8020) a sensing operations response to the SeMF 630. The sensing operations response may include the sensing session ID, the relevant sensing operation IDs, and sensing area and sensing configuration information for the sensing operations. Based on the received sensing operations response, the SeMF 630 identifies (8025) candidate sensing operation (s) and transmits (8030) a sensing outputs request including the sensing session ID and a sensing outputs descriptor to the sensing outputs repository function 660. Furthermore, the sensing outputs repository function 660 derives (8035) information of sensing processing and outputs, and transmits (8040) a sensing outputs response to the SeMF 630. In this case, the sensing outputs response may include the sensing processing ID, sensing session ID (s) , the type of sensing outputs (e.g., type of objects detected, object tracked, point cloud information) , achieved Sensing QoS (e.g., in terms of accuracy, resolution, latency to derive sensing outputs) .

[0164] Moreover, the SeMF 630 selects (8045) a target sensing operation (s) , and the SeMF 630 transmits (8050) , to the BS 620, a sensing configuration request including the target sensing operation ID (s) and the sensing service request requirements. Hence, the BS 620 determines (8055) whether and how to adapt existing sensing operation and transmits (8060) a sensing configuration modification response to the SeMF 630, which indicates one of the following: the sensing operation ID may be (re) used as it is currently configured; the sensing operation ID needs to be updated in terms of resources configuration, or sensing measurements and the like; or a new sensing operation needs to be created. According to the notifications or responses received by the BS 620, and possibly by other UEs or BSs, the SeMF 630 may decide (8065) on sensing operation to use or not use the indication at the sensing configuration modification response. In addition, the SeMF 630 may transmit (8070) the sensing configuration modification execution response indicating acceptance or rejection to the BS 620. The BS 620 may update (8075) the sensing operation based on the sensing configuration modification execution response.

[0165] Furthermore, the SeMF 630 may determine (8080) whether existing sensing processing may be reused and if there is a need for an adaptation. In case of an adaptation or modification is needed, the SeMF 630 may transmit (8085) a sensing processing modification request to the SePF 650 including the sensing processing ID, the relevant sensing session ID (s) and an updated processing configuration. For example, the processing configuration may include at least one of the following: changing processing of existing sensing session ID and adding measurements from a new sensing operation or a modified sensing operation; combining data from different sensing session IDs; or changing the target object if another object signature may be used in the filtering. Alternatively, the SeMF 630 may transmit (8085) a sensing processing addition request to the SePF 650. The SePF 650 may update or create (8090) a new sensing processing procedure based on the determination of the SeMF 630. In addition, the SePF 650 may transmit (8095) a sensing processing modification response or a sensing processing addition response to the SeMF 630. Furthermore, the SeMF 630 transmits (8095) a sensing service response to the AF 670 (or any other sensing client) indicating the acceptance or not of the request. Thereinafter, the sensing service is executed and the network provides to the sensing client the requested sensing inputs. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.

[0166] FIG. 9 illustrates an example signaling flow 900 for user equipment-based determination about whether and how to reuse and / or adapt existing sensing sessions according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 900 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 400 of FIG. 4. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 9, UE (s) 610 and / or BS (s) 620 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 4, SeMF 630 is an example of the first network entity 120 shown in FIG. 4. As shown in FIG. 9, the UE 610 is the entity that controls the configuration and resources of a sensing operation, e.g., for UE-based sensing (monostatic or multi-static) then the UE is the entity responsible to determine whether a sensing operation may be reused or may be modified.

[0167] A sensing client such as the AF 670 or UE transmits (9005) a sensing service request to the SeMF 630. The request includes information that are related with the sensing service type, a sensing area, a sensing configuration or filters information, sensing QoS requirements and the like. The SeMF 630 may use the inputs of the sensing client to determine a sensing operation request message and the target sensing sessions attributes, and the SeMF 630 transmits (9010) the sensing operation request to the sensing operations repository function 640. The sensing operations repository function 640 identifies (9015) the relevant sensing operations, and transmits (9020) a sensing operations response to the SeMF 630. The sensing operations response may include the sensing session ID, the relevant sensing operation IDs, and sensing area and sensing configuration information for the sensing operations. Based on the received sensing operations response, the SeMF 630 identifies (9025) candidate sensing operation (s) and transmits (9030) a sensing outputs request including the sensing session ID and a sensing outputs descriptor to the sensing outputs repository function 660. Furthermore, the sensing outputs repository function 660 derives (9035) information of sensing processing and outputs and transmits (9040) a sensing outputs response to the SeMF 630. The sensing outputs response may include the sensing processing ID, sensing session ID (s) , the type of sensing outputs (e.g., type of objects detected, object tracked, point cloud information) , achieved Sensing QoS (e.g., in terms of accuracy, resolution, latency to derive sensing outputs) .

[0168] Moreover, the SeMF 630 selects (9045) a target sensing operation (s) , and the SeMF 630 transmits (9050) , to the UE 610, a sensing configuration request including the target sensing operation ID (s) and the sensing service request requirements. Hence, the UE 610 determines (9055) whether and how to adapt existing sensing operation and transmits (9060) a sensing configuration modification response to the SeMF 630, which indicates one of the following: the sensing operation ID may be (re) used as it is currently configured; the sensing operation ID needs to be updated in terms of resources configuration, or sensing measurements and the like; or a new sensing operation needs to be created. According to the notifications or responses received by the UE 610, and possibly by other UEs or BSs, the SeMF 630 may decide (9065) on sensing operation to use or not use the indication at the sensing configuration modification response. In addition, the SeMF 630 may transmit (9070) the sensing configuration modification execution response indicating acceptance or rejection to the UE 610, and the UE 610 may update (9075) sensing operation based on the sensing configuration modification execution response.

[0169] Furthermore, the SeMF 630 may determine (9080) whether existing sensing processing may be reused and if there is a need for an adaptation. In case of an adaptation or modification is needed, the SeMF 630 may transmit (9085) a sensing processing modification request to the SePF 650 including the sensing processing ID, the relevant sensing session ID (s) and an updated processing configuration. For example, the processing configuration may include at least one of the following: changing processing of existing sensing session ID and adding measurements from a new sensing operation or a modified sensing operation; combining data from different sensing session IDs; or changing the target object if another object signature may be used in the filtering. Alternatively, the SeMF 630 may transmit (9085) a sensing processing addition request to the SePF 650. The SePF 650 may update or create (9090) a new sensing processing procedure based on the determination of the SeMF 630. In addition, the SePF 650 may transmit (9095) a sensing processing modification response or a sensing processing addition response to the SeMF 630. Furthermore, the SeMF 630 transmits (9095) a sensing service response to the AF 670 (or any other sensing client) indicating the acceptance or not of the request. Thereinafter, the sensing service is executed and the network provides to the sensing client the requested sensing inputs. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.

[0170] FIG. 10 illustrates an example signaling flow 1000 for setting and updating sensing operations information according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 1000 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 400 of FIG. 4. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 10, UE (s) 610’ , UE (s) 610 and / or BS (s) 620 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 4, SeMF 630 is an example of the first network entity 120 shown in FIG. 4, a sensing operations repository function 640 is an example of the third network entity 140 shown in FIG. 4, a SePF 650 is an example of the second network entity 130 shown in FIG. 4, and an AF 670 is an example of the device 460 shown in FIG. 4.

[0173] The entity responsible for the processing of sensing data, such as the SePF 650 in the network or a SePF in the UE 610 and the AF 670 may set or update the information for sensing processing to the sensing outputs repository function 650 including information for the sensing measurements provided as inputs for the processing as well as structure of the outputs that are provided to a sensing client. In some example embodiments, establishment of sensing operation that is BS-based (monostatic, multi-static) and UE assisted may be performed (11010) on the UE 610, BS 620, SeMF 630, and / or SePF 660. In addition, the SePF 660 may transmit (11020) an indication for setting or updating sensing processing procedures information to the sensing outputs repository function 660. Alternatively, establishment of sensing operation that is UE based may be performed (11030) on the UE 610 and / or the UE 610’ . In addition, the UE 610 may transmit (11040) an indication for setting or updating sensing processing procedures information to the sensing outputs repository function 660. In some other example embodiments, establishment of sensing operation that is non-3GPP based may be performed (11050) on the AF 670 and / or non 3GPP sensing. In addition, the AF 670 may transmit (11060) an indication for setting or updating sensing processing procedures information to the sensing outputs repository function 660.

[0174] FIG. 12 illustrates an example signaling flow 1200 for redirection of sensing operation according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 1200 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 400 of FIG. 4. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 12, UE (s) 610 and / or BS (s) 620 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 4, the SeMF 630 is an example of the first network entity 120 shown in FIG. 4, a source SeMF 1210 is an example of the third network entity 140 shown in FIG. 4, and an AF 670 is an example of the device 460 shown in FIG. 4.

[0175] The AF 670 transmits (12010) a sensing service request to the source SeMF 1210, and after the source SeMF 1210 checks with the sensing operations repository, the source SeMF 1210 may determine (12020) that the received sensing service request from the sensing client may be served by an existing sensing session at another SeMF (atarget SeMF 1220) , then the request may be handed over to the target SeMF 1220. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.

[0176] In some example embodiments, the source SeMF 1210 may transmit (12030) a sensing service redirect request to the AF 670. In this case, the sensing service redirect request may include the target SeMF information, the target sensing session information. Furthermore, the AF 670 may transmit (12040) another sensing service request to the target SeMF 1220. In some examples, the sensing service request may include the parameters in the sensing service request of the step 12010, and other parameters including an indication of redirection and target sensing session information. It is noted that the AF 670 above may be another requesting entity like UE or NF.

[0177] In some other example embodiments, the source SeMF 1210 may transmit (12050) a sensing service request to the target SeMF 1220. In some examples, the sensing service request may include the parameters in the sensing service request of the step 12010, and additional parameters including an indication of redirection and target sensing session information. After receiving the redirected sensing service request, the target SeMF 1220 then may adapt (12060) sensing sessions if needed as described in previous example embodiments in FIG. 6, FIG. 8 and FIG. 9, and the details are not described here again.

[0178] FIG. 13 illustrates an example signaling flow for combining sensing operations according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example signaling flow 1300 is an implementation of the example signaling flow 500 of FIG. 5. In particular, in the example embodiments discussed with respect to FIG. 12, a sensing device UE 1310 and / or a sensing device NG-RAN 1320 is an example of the apparatus 110 shown in FIG. 5, an AMF 1330 is an example of the other network entity 520 shown in FIG. 5, and a SeMF 1340 is an example of the network entity 510 shown in FIG. 5.

[0179] Due to ongoing session (s) and considering the limited radio and processing resources in BSs (and UEs) , the sensing device may decide to combine or merge two or more sensing requests and provide notifications to the SeMF 1340 about the decision to reuse existing / ongoing sensing operations. The sensing device may make such a decision by using local information of ongoing sensing operations together with sensing service request or subscription request information that the SeMF 1340 sends to the sensing device. Sensing device decision may be based on one or more of the below information related to ongoing sensing session and / or received in the sensing request from the SeMF 1340: acceptable and / or best-effort delay in sensing measurement response; sensing QoS including accuracy, resolution, granularity and confidence level; sensing request type; client information of the sensing session (for priorities, etc. ) ; assistance information provided for the sensing session including non-3GPP sensing methods which may be used, and sensing devices (e.g., new / extra sensing devices involved into the sensing session) ; the radio resources that may be provided or required to support the sensing session (and its QoS requirements) . In this way, as much as possible of the radio and processing resources can be reuse.

[0180] At step 13010, an ISAC session is triggered either by in-field device (UE) , RAN nodes, or the AMF 1330 by mobility event, or the SeMF 1340 internal status (e.g., timer) , other NF induced request (like emergency event) , internal client, external client (thru NEF) or roaming client. At step 13020, the sensing service request is handled by the SeMF 1340. In some example embodiments, the SeMF 1340 transmits (13030) a subscription to the AMF 1330. In some other example embodiments, the SeMF 1340 transmits (13040) a subscription to the sensing device NG-RAN 1320. The sensing device (sensing device UE 1310 or sensing device NG-RAN 1320) obtains (13050) merged ISAC session. In some example embodiments, the AMF 1330 transmits (13060) a Namf_ISAC_EventNotify to the SeMF 1340. In some other example embodiments, the sensing device NG-RAN 1320 transmits (13070) a Namf_ISAC_EventNotify to the SeMF 1340. At step 13080, an ISAC session is replied either for in-field device (UE) , RAN nodes, or the AMF 1330 by mobility event, or the SeMF 1340 internal status (e.g., timer) , other NF induced request (like emergency event) , internal client, external client (thru NEF) or roaming client which maps to step 13010. In this way, resource utilization can be improved. Specifically, a plurality of sensing operations can be combined.

[0181] Different types of sensing request may be sent by multiple clients, and the SeMF 1340 undertakes to configure the sensing session. The sensing device decides to merge or combine sensing requests or sensing subscription requests and thus the device reuses as much as possible radio processing resources according to all (merged) sensing service requirements. In some example embodiments, sensing device may send a notification to the SeMF 1340 about the decision to combine two or more sensing requests or subscriptions. In some other example embodiments, the sensing device may convert a synchronous sensing measurement request to an asynchronous subscription and sending the response over Next Generation RAN Policy Provisioning and Administration (NRPPa) or service-based interface (SBI) events.

[0182] Merging of ISAC sessions by sensing devices e.g. gNB or UE (s) , follows and implements logic similar to the one detailed as shown in FIG. 3 with universally unique identifier (UUID) of the sensing session. The interaction between the SeMF 1340 and sensing devices (sensing device UE 1310 or sensing device NG-RAN 1320) may be transmitted directly or transmitted via the AMF 1330.

[0183] If a single sensing device (RAN node) is selected by the SeMF 1340, interaction is transmitted directly between the SeMF 1340 and sensing device. If sensing device is RAN node, the protocol may be NRPPa (or its variant for sensing) . Alternatively, if sensing device is UE, the protocol may be LTE positioning protocol (LPP) (or its variant) . When sensing session involves multiple UEs and their respective serving RAN nodes (e.g., BS) , interaction is transmitted via AMF which routes the LPP over NAS, also routes NRPPa over NGAP to respective serving RAN nodes (BS) of UEs. The protocol may be based on NRPPa, on dedicated sensing protocol or using SBI interface. subscription over NRPPa is equivalent to event or response over NGAP, and subscription using SBI.

[0184] For the configuration from the SeMF 1340 to the RAN nodes NRPPa signaling may be used or another NG-AP protocol such as sensing protocol. For the configuration messages from the SeMF 1340 to UEs LPP protocols may be used, or a sensing protocol e.g., via NAS messages transparent or not to the AMF 1330 or via RRC messages from the BS. For the sending data reporting from the UE and / or BSs to the SePF data / user plane signaling or control plane could be used. For instance, large volume may be sent via data / user plane paths, or a combination of protocols according to the type of receiver (UE of BS) and reporting type. It should be noted that the SePF may be located in the core network, or alternatively to a MEC internally or externally to the communication network. In some deployments, the SePF and the sensing outputs repository function may be collocated. In case of untrusted AF, a NEF service may be introduced between AF and the SeMF 1340 for API handling as a secured exposure. A NEF or the new exposure NF may be introduced between the AF and the SePF for secured sensing data exposure.

[0185] If there is no associated sensing service request with AF / NF for the given region, the SeMF 1340 has to support the deletion of the sensing operation. In addition, the SeMF 1340 has to remove the corresponding sensing processing deletion to the SePF. Moreover, the SeMF 1340 has to update Sensing Operations Rep Function about the sensing service request deletion. If the sensing service request removes only the overlap of sensing, there may be no impact in sensing operations and actions towards the SePF.

[0186] FIG. 14 shows a flowchart of an example method 1400 implemented at an apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 1400 will be described from the perspective of the apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0187] At block 1410, the apparatus receives, from a first network entity, a request associated with a sensing operation.

[0188] At block 1420, the apparatus determines whether to update the sensing operation based on the request associated with the sensing operation.

[0189] At block 1430, the apparatus transmits, to the first network entity, a response to the request associated with the sensing operation. In this way, resource utilization can be improved.
