Abstract

Methods and apparatus for frequency-selective beam management in wireless communication systems are disclosed. A user equipment (UE) receives configuration dividing a frequency band into multiple subbands for beam management. The UE measures and reports beam quality for reference signals in each subband separately. The network indicates different transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states for different subbands, enabling the UE to apply optimal receive beams and transmit beams for each subband. The TCI states provide quasi co-location (QCL) Type D information for downlink reception and spatial filter information for uplink transmission on a per-subband basis. This frequency-selective approach overcomes limitations of existing systems that apply a single beam across the entire frequency band, enabling more accurate beamforming and improved system performance in multi-beam wireless systems.

Description

METHOD FOR FREQUENCY-SELECTIVE BEAM MANAGEMENTCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONSThe application claims priority to US provisional patent application No. 63 / 752,259 , filed on January 31, 2025, which is incorporated by reference in the present application in its entirety.BACKGROUND OF DISCLOSURE1. Field of Disclosure

[0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of communication systems, and more particularly, to a method for frequency-selective beam management. 2. Description of Related Art

[0002] The 5G New Radio (NR) system, particularly when operating in Frequency Range 2 (FR2) , relies on a multi-beam architecture for highly directional transmission and reception. For beam management, the gNB transmits multiple Channel State Information Reference Signal (CSI-RS) or synchronization signal (SS)  / physical broadcast channel (PBCH) blocks (SSB) , with each reference signal corresponding to a specific transmit beam. The User Equipment (UE) performs beam measurement and reports the results to the network. Critically, the current NR system assumes that a single optimal beam is applicable across the entire allocated frequency band for both downlink reception and uplink transmission.Technical Problem

[0003] The main drawback of the existing beam management method is that the system operates under the inherent assumption that a single optimal beam applies to the whole channel bandwidth. However, in real-world scenarios, the wireless channels are frequency-selective, meaning the ideal beam for a given UE varies across different subbands within the allocated frequency. The current design's rigid application of a single, wideband precoder or TCI state to the entire band results in sub-optimal system operation. Therefore, the current 5G / NR system cannot support the necessary fine-grained frequency-selective beam training and indication per subband, leading to degraded link performance and reduced data rates.

[0004] This limitation leads to sub-optimal link adaptation and degraded overall performance, necessitating innovative techniques to support frequency-selective beam management to improve network capacity and data rates. Hence, a method for frequency-selective beam management is desirable.SUMMARY

[0029] The New Radio (NR)  / 5G system supports operation in Frequency Range 2 (FR2) , which fundamentally relies on a multi-beam architecture. This architecture involves the gNB (e.g., gNB 20) transmitting multiple downlink (Tx) beams and receiving multiple uplink (Rx) beams, while the UE (e.g., UE 10) is also equipped with multiple Tx and Rx beams. Establishing proper communication requires the gNB and the UE to identify and select the optimal pair of Tx and Rx beams. For example, association between a Receive (Rx) beam and a Transmit (Tx) beam may be provided by transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states and / or Quasi Co-location (QCL) Type D information. To facilitate this selection, NR employs a Channel State Information (CSI) framework, which includes beam measurement and reporting.

[0030] Specifically, the gNB (e.g., gNB 20) transmits multiple CSI-RS resources or SS / PBCH blocks (SSB) , with each resource potentially corresponding to a distinct Tx beam. The UE (e.g., UE 10) is requested to measure the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP or L1-SINR) of these transmitted reference signals. L1-RSRP stands for layer one reference signal received power (RSRP) , and L1-SINR stands for layer one signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) . The gNB then uses this information to indicate the appropriate beams for the UE's downlink reception (e.g., for physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) and physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) ) and uplink transmission (e.g., for physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , and sounding reference signal (SRS) ) . Given that each CSI-RS or SSB represents one Tx beam, a gNB configured with N transmit beams must configure and transmit an equivalent number of reference signal resources (i.e., CSI-RS resources or SS / PBCH blocks) , where N is a positive integer.

[0031] In the NR / 5G systems, the gNB (e.g., gNB 20) implements beam indication through the signaling of Transmission Configuration Indicator (TCI) states. A UE (e.g., UE 10) may be provided with either a list of joint TCI states or separate TCI lists for Downlink (DL) and Uplink (UL) . Each joint TCI state provides the complete spatial configuration, which includes: 1. Quasi Co-location (QCL) Type D information for downlink reception (defining the spatial Receiver (Rx) parameters) . 2. Reference information for the UL Transmit (Tx) spatial filter for uplink transmission, referred to as. 3. Association with a set of uplink power control parameters, including P0, alpha α, closed loop power control index, and the pathloss Reference Signal (RS) .

[0032] Alternatively, the configuration can be split: 1. Each DL TCI state provides the QCL Type D configuration for downlink reception. 2. Each UL TCI state provides reference information for the UL Tx spatial filter and may also be associated with the uplink power control parameters (P0, alpha α, closed loop index, and pathloss RS) .

[0033] The reference information for the UL Transmit (Tx) spatial filter may be referred to as UL Tx spatial filter information in the description. The NR / 5G systems implement the beam indication function through the signaling of TCI states. The gNB indicates either a joint TCI state or a pair of separate Downlink (DL) and Uplink (UL) TCI states to the UE (e.g., UE 10) via a Downlink Control Information (DCI) signal. Upon receiving the DCI and feeding back an Acknowledge (ACK) to the gNB, the UE applies the indicated TCI state (s) starting from the first slot that is at least a predetermined time (beamAppTime symbols) after the last symbol of the PUCCH or PUSCH carrying the ACK, where beamAppTime is a positive integer. From the QCL Type D information in the indicated TCI state, the UE derives the spatial Receiver (Rx) beam for PDSCH and PDCCH reception. Similarly, the UE derives the Transmit (Tx) beam for PUSCH, PUCCH, and / or SRS transmission from the UL Tx spatial filter information. Furthermore, the UE uses the TCI state to derive uplink power control parameters and pathloss reference signals to calculate its transmit power.

[0034] Frequency-Selective Beam Management

[0035] To overcome the challenges associated with wideband beam management, the present disclosure provides exemplary techniques for frequency-selective beam management, including methods for beam reporting and beam indication / switching tailored to subbands.

[0036] With reference to FIG. 2, for example, an embodiment of a UE 10 includes one of the UE 10a or UE 10b, an embodiment of a base station 20 (e.g., gNB) includes the base station 20a. Although the UE 10 and the base station 20 are detailed as examples in the description, the disclosed method may be applied to other UEs and / or other base stations. Uplink (UL) transmission of a control signal or data may be a transmission operation from a UE to a base station. Downlink (DL) transmission of a control signal or data may be a transmission operation from a base station to a UE.

[0037] Step S001: The gNB 20 transmits to a user equipment (UE) a subband configuration according to which a frequency band includes a plurality of subbands for beam management. The UE 10 receives the subband configuration.

[0038] Step S002: The UE 10 measures, for each subband of the plurality of subbands, Layer 1 reference signal received power (L1-RSRP) for each reference signal of a plurality of reference signals. The UE 10 reports a subband beam measurement report obtained from the measuring. The subband beam measurement report includes, for each subband, at least one reference signal indicator and a corresponding L1-RSRP value for the reference signal. The gNB 20 receives the subband beam measurement report.

[0039] Step S003: The gNB 20 transmits, in response to the subband beam measurement report, a transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state indication specifying, for each subband, beam information derived from a quasi co-location (QCL) Type D reference signal or an uplink (UL) transmit spatial filter reference signal. The beam information is for downlink reception or uplink transmission in the corresponding subband. The UE 10 receives the TCI state indication.

[0040] Step S004: The UE 10 applies the beam information to downlink reception or uplink transmission in the corresponding subband.

[0041] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the subband configuration comprises at least one of: a number of physical resource blocks (PRBs) per subband, or a total number of subbands in the frequency band.

[0042] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the entire frequency band is treated as a single subband according to an explicit or implicit signal of whether the subband configuration is present. The gNB 20 and the UE 10 treat the entire frequency band as a single subband in response to an explicit or implicit signal of whether the subband configuration is present.

[0043] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the subband beam measurement report comprises reference signal indicators and corresponding L1-RSRP values for a plurality of reference signals in each subband, including an absolute L1-RSRP for a strongest reference signal per subband and differential L1-RSRP for remaining reference signals. For example, the reporting comprises transmitting K×M reference signal indicators and corresponding L1-RSRP values, including an absolute L1-RSRP for a strongest reference signal per subband and differential L1-RSRP for remaining reference signals, where K is a number of reference signals per subband, and M is the number of subbands.

[0044] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the subband beam measurement report comprises: a subband identifier field followed by a block of reference signal indicators and L1-RSRP values for an identified subband.

[0046] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the TCI state indication comprises a plurality of separate TCI states, each containing one QCL Type D reference signal and corresponding to one configured subband, and each TCI state is associated with a respective subband of the TCI state for downlink reception. The UE 10 applies each TCI state to a respective subband of the TCI state for downlink reception. For example, the TCI state indication comprises N separate TCI states, each containing one QCL Type D reference signal and corresponding to one subband, and the UE applies each TCI state to its respective subband for downlink reception.

[0047] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, for uplink transmission, a UL transmit spatial filter the UE 10 applied to a portion of a frequency domain resource allocation in a corresponding subband is derived from the UL transmit spatial filter reference signal indicated per subband.

[0048] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, each TCI state of the TCI state indication includes a single UL transmit spatial filter reference signal mapped to one corresponding subband.

[0049] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, each TCI state of the TCI state indication includes multiple UL transmit spatial filter reference signals, each mapped to one corresponding subband.

[0050] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, each TCI state of the TCI state indication comprises both QCL Type D information for downlink and UL transmit spatial filter information for uplink corresponding to a respective subband.

[0051] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, each TCI state of the TCI state indication is associated with uplink power control parameters including at least one of P0, alpha, closed-loop power control index, or pathloss reference signal.

[0052] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, a downlink for the downlink reception comprises physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) , or channel state information (CSI) reference signal (RS) .

[0053] In one or more embodiments of the disclosure, the reference signals comprise CSI-RS resources or synchronization signal (SS)  / physical broadcast channel (PBCH) blocks (SSBs) .

[0054] Subband-Based Operation

[0055] In one embodiment, a UE (e.g., UE 10) is configured to operate subband-based beam management. The system of the disclosure provides the configuration for beam management subbands, which may specify either the number of Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) constituting one subband (e.g., N PRBs) or the total number of subbands (M) within the allocated frequency. N and M are positive integers. The UE is then requested to partition the whole band accordingly and measure reference signals for each designated subband before reporting the per-subband beam measurement results to the network (e.g., gNB 20) .

[0056] Downlink and Uplink Indication

[0057] The UE (e.g., UE 10) may be indicated a reference signal for beam management in each subband. 1. Downlink (DL) Beam Indication: For downlink reception, the UE is requested to apply the reference beam information (e.g., derived from a Quasi Co-location Type D configuration) associated with the provided reference signal for a given subband. This derived spatial parameter (i.e., the reference beam information) is applied only to PDCCH or PDSCH reception occurring in that corresponding subband. 2. Uplink (UL) Beam Indication: For uplink transmission, the UE is indicated a reference signal that provides the spatial reference (i.e., UL Tx spatial filter information) for determining the Transmit (Tx) spatial filter for a specific subband. The UE applies this determined Tx spatial filter only to the transmission of PUSCH, PUCCH, and / or SRS within the corresponding subband.

[0058] Fallback Mechanism

[0059] In simplified operation, the configuration of subband beam management may indicate that the whole allocated band constitutes a single subband (i.e., reverting to wideband operation) . For example, a special value may be used to signal this, or the UE (e.g., UE 10) may default to assuming a single wideband subband if no explicit subband configuration is provided by the network (e.g., gNB 20) .

[0060] Subband Beam Measurement and Reporting

[0061] In one method, a user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) is configured to perform subband beam measurement on reference signals and report the corresponding results to the network (e.g., gNB 20) . The network provides the UE with the configuration of reference signals for measurement and the specific configuration of subbands for beam management. 1. Partitioning by Fixed PRB Count

[0062] In one example, the configuration specifies N, the number of PRBs per subband for beam management. The UE partitions the allocated band such that: The subband #0 for beam management includes the PRBs #0 through #N-1 in the allocated band. The subband #1 for beam management includes the PRBs #N through #2N-1 in the allocated band. The subband #p for beam management includes the PRBs #pN through # (p-1) N-1. N and p are positive integers, and p represents the subband index. 2. Partitioning by Fixed Subband Count

[0063] The configuration may alternatively specify M, the total number of subbands for beam management in the band. If the total number of PRBs in the band is P, the UE (e.g., UE 10) partitions the band into M subbands of approximately equal size, where   is the size of the larger subbands,   is a ceiling operator, and   means ceiling operation of P / M. The partitioning proceeds such that: The subband #0 for beam management may include the PRBs #0 through # The subband #1 for beam management may include the PRBs #  through #2 The subband #p for beam management may include the PRBs #p  through #   up to the band edge. P and M are positive integers.

[0064] The UE is requested to measure the L1-RSRP for each reference signal within each designated subband. For instance, if the UE is configured with N1 reference signals and M1 subbands, the UE may be requested to measure and report the L1-RSRP for K reference signals in each of the M1 subbands. K, N1, and M1 are positive integers.

[0065] In a single reporting instance (e.g., via Uplink Control Information (UCI) in PUCCH or PUSCH, medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) , or radio resource control (RRC) ) , the UE reports the measurement results, which may include: 1. K times M1 indicators, where each indicator identifies a measured reference signal for beam measurement; and 2. For each reported indicator, one value of L1-RSRP or differential L1-RSRP, which corresponds to the indicated reference signal and an associated subband.

[0066] An example of a report content structure

[0067] The UE (e.g., UE 10) may report the subband L1-RSRP measurement according to a defined report content structure. Furthermore, the reporting may utilize differential L1-RSRP values to reduce signaling overhead. The following Table 1 shows an example of report:

[0068] Table 1

[0069] The reporting of beam measurement results may be structured by subband. Specifically, as illustrated in the Table 1, a first indicator field can specify the subband to which a subsequent block of information pertains.

[0070] For example, a block comprising Reference Signal Indicators #1 through #4 and their corresponding L1-RSRP values are reported for the subband indicated by the first indicator. The block of Reference Signal Indicators #5 through #8 and their corresponding differential RSRP values are then reported for a second, separate subband. The block of Reference Signal Indicators #9 through #12 and their corresponding differential RSRP values are then reported for a third, separate subband, and so on.

[0071] Downlink Transmission Method

[0072] In a corresponding method, the user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) is provided with Transmit (Tx) beam information for downlink transmission from the gNB (e.g., gNB 20) for each configured subband. To receive a downlink transmission (e.g., PDSCH, PDCCH, or CSI-RS) from the gNB, the UE assumes the use of the Receive (Rx) beam corresponding to the provided Tx beam information to receive the portion of the downlink transmission that falls within that specific subband. For example, association between a Receive (Rx) beam and a Transmit (Tx) beam may be provided by QCL-Type D information.

[0073] One TCI state: - In one example, the user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) may be provided with one or more TCI states. Each TCI state is configured with multiple reference signals for QCL Type D. Particularly, each of these reference signals provides the QCL-Type D information for a single subband of beam management. For instance, if the UE is configured with N1 subbands, each TCI state contains N1 RSs, with each RS providing the QCL-Type D information for one of the N1 subbands. For a downlink transmission (e.g., PDCCH, PDSCH, or CSI-RS) , the UE is indicated a single TCI state. To receive the downlink transmission, for each subband, the UE applies the corresponding QCL-Type D reference signal-contained within the indicated TCI state-to a portion of the frequency domain resource allocation that falls within the respective subband.

[0074] Multiple TCI states: - In one example, the user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) may be configured with one or more TCI states, where each TCI state contains only a single reference signal (RS) for QCL Type D. Subsequently, the UE may be indicated N1 TCI states for downlink transmission, with each indicated TCI state corresponding to a unique subband of beam management. To receive a downlink transmission (e.g., PDCCH, PDSCH, or CSI-RS) , for each subband, the UE is requested to apply the QCL-Type D information contained in the indicated TCI state that corresponds to the specific subband of the frequency domain resource allocation.

[0075] Uplink Transmission Method

[0076] In one method, a user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) is provided with UL Transmit (Tx) spatial filter information for each subband of beam management. To transmit an uplink transmission (e.g., PUSCH, PUCCH, or SRS) , the UE uses the corresponding UL Tx spatial filter information associated with a specific subband to transmit the portion of the uplink transmission that falls within that subband's frequency resource allocation. An example of configuration via TCI state is detailed in the following.

[0077] One TCI state: - In one specific example, the UE (e.g., UE 10) may be provided with one or more TCI states. Each TCI state may be configured with multiple reference signals (RSs) for the UL Transmit (Tx) spatial filter, where each RS provides the information necessary to determine the UL Tx spatial filter for a unique subband of beam management. For instance, if the UE is configured with N1 subbands, a single indicated TCI state may contain N1 RSs. Each of these N1 RSs provides the necessary information for determining the UL Tx spatial filter for one of the N1 subbands. When the UE receives an indication for one TCI state for an uplink transmission, for each subband, it applies the corresponding UL Tx spatial filter-derived from the RS contained in the indicated TCI state-to each part of the frequency domain resource allocation associated with its respective subband.

[0078] Multiple TCI states: - In yet another example, the user equipment (UE) (e.g., UE 10) may be configured with one or more TCI states, where each TCI state contains only a single reference signal (RS) for the UL Transmit (Tx) spatial filter. Subsequently, the UE may be indicated N1 TCI states for uplink transmission, with each indicated TCI state corresponding to a unique subband of beam management. To transmit PUSCH, PUCCH, or SRS, for each subband, the UE is requested to apply the UL Tx spatial filter contained in the indicated TCI state that corresponds to the specific subband of the frequency domain resource allocation.

[0079] The proposed methods may enable more accurate beam formulation across the entire band; thus, frequency-selective multi-beam operation is effectively supported.

[0080] The various embodiments described herein provide significant technical effects that address the limitations of existing wideband beam management systems. By enabling the application of distinct spatial configurations on a subband level, embodiments of the disclosed method yield one or more of the following technical benefits:

[0081] The core technical effect is the ability to overcome the limitations imposed by frequency-selective fading channels. In contrast to conventional systems that apply a single, suboptimal wideband precoder, the disclosed method allows the gNB to configure and the UE to apply a unique Transmit Configuration Indicator (TCI) state and / or spatial filter for each designated subband. This ensures that the precoding and beamforming applied to each portion of the allocated bandwidth are tailored to the actual channel conditions of that specific subband. Consequently, the methods achieve optimal link adaptation and significantly improve the uplink and downlink connection quality over the entire assigned bandwidth.

[0082] By accurately matching the beam direction and spatial filtering to the channel characteristics on a subband granularity, the system maximizes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for the scheduled data transmission. This direct improvement in link quality translates into higher achievable data rates, leading to a substantial increase in overall system capacity and cell throughput.

[0083] The invention provides a means to efficiently utilize the complex multi-beam antenna arrays deployed in FR2. By defining TCI states and spatial filters per subband, the gNB gains the necessary control to exploit frequency diversity and spatial selectivity simultaneously. This avoids the waste of spatial resources that occurs when a single compromised wideband beam is used. Thus, every configured resource block group contributes optimally to the data transmission.

[0084] The proposed architecture efficiently signals the necessary spatial information. By configuring multiple subbands within a single UE with a set of TCI states, the signaling overhead associated with repeatedly updating the spatial filter parameters is minimized. The system can leverage a single Downlink Control Information (DCI) message to implicitly or explicitly indicate the distinct spatial configurations for multiple subbands, providing fine-grained control without proportional expansion of the control channel overhead.
