Abstract

Techniques pertaining to handling eCall parameters in a peer generation while performing an eCall inactivity procedure in a current generation in mobile communications are described. An apparatus (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) performs an eCall inactivity procedure in a current system of a current generation. The apparatus also performs an operation to handle one or more parameters of one other system of one other generation in an event that the UE is operating in a single-registration or corresponding registration mode.

Description

METHODS OF HANDLING ECALL PARAMETERS IN PEER GENERATION WHILE PERFORMING ECALL INACTIVITY PROCEDURE IN CURRENT GENERATION IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)

[0001] The present disclosure claims the priority benefit of India Patent Application No. 202521008873, filed 03 February 2025, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to handling eCall parameters in a peer generation while performing an eCall inactivity procedure in a current generation in mobile communications.BACKGROUND

[0003] In wireless communications such as mobile communications under the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specification, an eCall inactivity procedure is performed only in a 3GPP access and applicable only to a user equipment (UE) configured for eCall-only mode as specified in the 3GPP technical specification (TS) 31.102. As specified, the procedure is to be started when: (a) the UE is in any 5GMM-REGISTERED substate except substates 5GMM-REGISTERED. PLMN-SEARCH or 5GMM-REGISTERED. NO-CELL-AVAILABLE; (b) the UE is in 5GMM-IDLE mode or 5GMM-CONNECTED mode with RRC inactive indication; and (c) one of the following conditions applies: (1) timer T3444 expires or is found to have already expired and timer T3445 is not running; (2) timer T3445 expires or is found to have already expired and timer T3444 is not running; or (3) timers T3444 and T3445 expire or are found to have already expired. Correspondingly, the UE is to perform the following actions: (a) all non-access stratum (NAS) timers are stopped and associated procedures aborted except for timers T3245, the timer TF, the timer TG, (see TS 23.122) , and the timer instance associated with the entry in the list of "PLMNs not allowed to operate at the present UE location" ; and the UE is to reset the registration attempt counter and service request attempt counter; (b) if the UE is currently registered to the network for 5GS services, perform a de-registration procedure; (c) delete any 5G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, list of equivalent PLMNs, and ngKSI; and (d) enter 5GMM-DEREGISTERED. eCALL-INACTIVE state. Moreover, if the UE is configured for eCall-only mode as specified in TS 31.102 and moves from a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) Radio Access Network (GERAN) or Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) to Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) , the UE is perform the following: (a) if timer T3242 is running, start timer T3444 with the time left on T3242 and stop timer T3242; (b) if timer T3243 is running, start timer T3445 with the time left on T3243 and stop timer T3243; and (c) if timer T3242 or timer T3243 is running, perform an initial registration procedure for 5GS services.

[0004] However, when a UE performs an eCall inactivity procedure in a current system of a current generation, (e.g., 5th Generation (5G) System (5GS) ) , and if / when the UE is supporting (e.g., currently registering) also another system of another generation, the UE behavior is undefined regarding how the UE is to handle Mobility Management (MM) parameters such as globally unique temporary identifier (GUTI) , last visited registered tracking area identity (TAI) , key set identifier (KSI) and so on of a peer or another generation. Also, if the UE does not handle parameters in the peer / another generation and the UE moves from the current generation to another generation, then UE would use incorrect and / or outdated MM parameters while performing a registration procedure.

[0005] Therefore, there is a need for a solution of handling eCall parameters in a peer generation while performing an eCall inactivity procedure in a current generation in mobile communications.SUMMARY

[0017] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 3 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 3.

[0018] Referring to FIG. 1, network environment 100 involves a UE 110 in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 (e.g., a mobile network including an NTN and a TN) via a terrestrial network node 125 (e.g., an evolved Node-B (eNB) , a Next Generation Node-B (gNB) , or a transmission / reception point (TRP) ) and / or a non-terrestrial network node 128 (e.g., a satellite) . For example, the terrestrial network node 125 and / or the non-terrestrial network node 128 may form a non-terrestrial network (NTN) serving cell for wireless communication with the UE 110. In some implementations, the UE 110 may be an IoT device such as an NB-IoT UE or an enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) UE (e.g., a bandwidth reduced low complexity (BL) UE or a coverage enhancement (CE) UE) . In such communication environment, the UE 110, the network 120, the terrestrial network node 125, and the non-terrestrial network node 128 may implement various schemes pertaining to handling eCall parameters in a peer generation while performing an eCall inactivity procedure in a current generation in accordance with the present disclosure, as described below. It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately.

[0019] Under various proposed schemes in accordance with the present disclosure, when a UE (e.g., UE 110) performs an eCall inactivity procedure in a current system (e.g., 5GS) , the UE may perform one or more operations for parameters of another system of another generation if / when the UE is operating in a single-registration or corresponding registration mode. For instance, the UE may handle MM parameters of the other system of the other generation (e.g., GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, KSI, attempt counters and the like) as in the case when the UE performs the eCall inactivity procedure in the peer or the other system of the other generation. The current generation may be a 2nd Generation (2G) , 3rd Generation (3G) , 4th Generation (4G) , 5th Generation (5G) or 6th Generation (6G) . The peer or the other generation may be another of 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G.

[0020] Under a proposed scheme in which the current generation is 6G and the peer generation is 5G or 4G, when the UE performs an eCall inactivity procedure in 6G, then: (a) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 5G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, next-generation KSI (ngKSI) , attempt counters (e.g., registration attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when UE performs the eCall inactivity procedure in 5G; or (b) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 4G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, enhanced KSI (eKSI) , attempt counters (e.g., attach / TAU attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when the UE performs the eCall inactivity procedure in 4G.

[0021] Under a proposed scheme in which the current generation is 5G and the peer generation is 6G or 4G, when the UE performs an eCall inactivity procedure in 5G, then: (a) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 6G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, 6G KSI (6gKSI) , attempt counters (e.g., registration attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when the UE performs the eCall inactivity procedure in 6G; or (b) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 4G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, eKSI, attempt counters (e.g., attach / TAU attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when the UE perform the eCall inactivity procedure in 4G.

[0022] Under a proposed scheme in which the current generation is 4G and the peer generation is 6G or 5G, when the UE performs an eCall inactivity procedure in 4G, then: (a) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 6G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, 6gKSI, attempt counters (e.g., registration attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when the UE perform the eCall inactivity procedure in 6G; or (b) the UE may handle MM parameters such as 5G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, ngKSI, attempt counters (e.g., registration attempt counter, service request attempt counter) for the case when the UE perform the eCall inactivity procedure in 5G.

[0023] As an illustrative example without limiting the scope of the present disclosure, an eCall inactivity procedure may be performed only in a 3GPP access and applicable only to a UE configured for eCall-only mode as specified in 3GPP TS 31.102

[0022] . The procedure may be started when: (a) the UE is in any 5GMM-REGISTERED substate except substates 5GMM-REGISTERED. The UE may then perform the following actions: (a) all NAS timers may be stopped and associated procedures aborted except for timers T3245, the timer TF, the timer TG, (see 3GPP TS 23.122 [5] ) , and the timer instance associated with the entry in the list of "PLMNs not allowed to operate at the present UE location" ; and the UE may reset the registration attempt counter and service request attempt counter; (b) if the UE is currently registered to the network for 5GS services, perform a de-registration procedure; (c) delete any 5G-GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, list of equivalent PLMNs, and ngKSI; and (d) enter 5GMM-DEREGISTERED. eCALL-INACTIVE state; and € if the UE is operating in single-registration mode, the UE may handle Enhanced Packet System (EPS) Mobility Management (EMM) parameters EMM state, 4G-GUTI, last visited registered TAI, TAI list, eKSI, attach attempt counter, tracking area updating attempt counter and service request attempt counter as specified in TS 24.301 for the case when the eCall inactivity procedure is performed in EMM. If the UE is configured for eCall-only mode as specified in 3GPP TS 31.102

[0023] and moves from GERAN or UTRAN to NG-RAN, the UE may perform the following actions: (a) if timer T3242 is running, start timer T3444 with the time left on T3242 and stop timer T3242; (b) if timer T3243 is running, start timer T3445 with the time left on T3243 and stop timer T3243; and (c) if timer T3242 or timer T3243 is running, perform an initial registration procedure for 5GS services. Notably, timers T3242 and T3243 are specified in 3GPP TS 24.008

[0012] .

[0024] As another illustrative example without limiting the scope of the present disclosure, an eCall inactivity procedure may be applicable only to a UE configured for eCall-only mode as specified in 3GPP TS 31.102

[0017] . The procedure may be started when: (a) the UE is in any EMM-REGISTERED substate except substates EMM-REGISTERED. PLMN-SEARCH or EMM-REGISTERED. NO-CELL-AVAILABLE; (b) the UE is in EMM-IDLE mode; and (c) one of the following conditions applies: (1) timer T3444 expires or is found to have already expired and timer T3445 is not running; (2) timer T3445 expires or is found to have already expired and timer T3444 is not running; or (3) timers T3444 and T3445 expire or are found to have already expired. The UE may then perform the following actions: (a) all NAS timers are stopped and associated procedures aborted except for timers T3245, the timer TD, the timer TE, the timer TH (see 3GPP TS 23.122 [6] ) and the timer instance associated with the entry in the list of "PLMNs not allowed to operate at the present UE location" ; and the UE may reset the attach attempt counter, tracking area updating attempt counter and service request attempt counter; (b) if the UE is currently registered to EPS services only, perform a detach procedure for EPS services only; (c) if the UE is currently registered for both EPS services and non-EPS services, perform a combined detach procedure for EPS services and non-EPS services; (d) delete any GUTI, TAI list, last visited registered TAI, list of equivalent PLMNs, and eKSI; (e) enter EMM-DEREGISTERED. eCALL-INACTIVE state; and (f) handle 5th Generation (5G) Mobility Management (5GMM) parameters 5GMM state, 5G-GUTI, last visited registered TAI, TAI list, ngKSI, registration attempt counter and service request attempt counter as specified in TS 24.501 for the case when the eCall inactivity procedure is performed in 5GMM. Additional Notes

[0037] The herein-described subject matter sometimes illustrates different components contained within, or connected with, different other components. It is to be understood that such depicted architectures are merely examples, and that in fact many other architectures can be implemented which achieve the same functionality. In a conceptual sense, any arrangement of components to achieve the same functionality is effectively "associated" such that the desired functionality is achieved. Hence, any two components herein combined to achieve a particular functionality can be seen as "associated with" each other such that the desired functionality is achieved, irrespective of architectures or intermedial components. Likewise, any two components so associated can also be viewed as being "operably connected" , or "operably coupled" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality, and any two components capable of being so associated can also be viewed as being "operably couplable" , to each other to achieve the desired functionality. Specific examples of operably couplable include but are not limited to physically mateable and / or physically interacting components and / or wirelessly interactable and / or wirelessly interacting components and / or logically interacting and / or logically interactable components.

[0038] Further, with respect to the use of substantially any plural and / or singular terms herein, those having skill in the art can translate from the plural to the singular and / or from the singular to the plural as is appropriate to the context and / or application. The various singular / plural permutations may be expressly set forth herein for sake of clarity.

[0039] Moreover, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims, e.g., bodies of the appended claims, are generally intended as “open” terms, e.g., the term “including” should be interpreted as “including but not limited to, ” the term “having” should be interpreted as “having at least, ” the term “includes” should be interpreted as “includes but is not limited to, ” etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to implementations containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an, " e.g., “a” and / or “an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one” or “one or more; ” the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should be interpreted to mean at least the recited number, e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations, " without other modifiers, means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”

[0040] From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that various implementations of the present disclosure have been described herein for purposes of illustration, and that various modifications may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the various implementations disclosed herein are not intended to be limiting, with the true scope and spirit being indicated by the following claims.
