[0008] Fragrance compositions and uses thereof
[0009] The present disclosure relates to compositions, in particular fragrance compositions, and 5 uses thereof. Further aspects of the present disclosure will arise from the description below, in particular from the examples, as well as from the attached patent claims.
[0010] The perfume and oral care industries are in constant need of new compounds with unique and desirable organoleptic properties to meet evolving market demands and set new trends.
[0011] 0 A significant challenge in this field is the increasing necessity to replace long-established compounds that have, overtime, been identified or suspected to possess toxicological concerns, such as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic properties.
[0012] Among these compounds are salicylates, a class of substances which has found widespread use in perfumery and the fragrance industry. These compounds offer a broad spectrum of odour notes, ranging from balsamic to green-floral, solar-floral, and specific floral notes such as orchid, hyacinth, rose, reseda, and lilac. A common characteristic of many salicylates is a white-floral ylang-ylang character and a slightly medicinal Wintergreen note, which is particularly pronounced in methyl salicylate.
[0013] Previous efforts to replace salicylates have focused on replicating their common winter-0 green-ylang-ylang character using other fragrance components. For instance, Ylanganate (methyl-o-toluate; in context of the present application, tradenames are distinguished bycapitalization and not by TM or®) was introduced to provide white-floral notes reminiscent of orange blossom, ylang-ylang, and gardenia.
[0014] Ethyl 2-methylbenzoate (Salyssia) has also been introduced into perfumery, with its methyl salicylate-like note being surprisingly more pronounced than in methyl salicylate itself.
[0015] However, the effects of salicylates are not easily transferable to carba-analogous benzoates, largely due to the absence of the electronegative phenolic hydroxyl function, which results in different hydrogen bonding geometries and distinct odour profiles.
[0016] While Ylanganate and ethyl 2-methylbenzoate can satisfactorily replicate Wintergreen and ylang-ylang notes, they fall short for the broader range of salicylate notes, particularly those in the green-balsamic family and other floral profiles such as orchid, hyacinth, rose, reseda, and lilac.
[0017] Moreover, methyl and ethyl 2-methylbenzoate are often perceived as too harsh and medicinal, which significantly limits their applicability in fine perfumery.
[0018] Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to overcome the aforementioned disadvantages of the prior art.
[0019] A further object of the present invention is to provide novel compounds and compositions thereof that are useful as fragrances, not only by replacing existing toxicologically problematic salicylates but also by introducing new odour notes with a high signature effect.
[0020] Furthermore, the present invention aims to provide novel compounds and compositions thereof which are capable of enhancing the positive and desirable olfactory characteristics of other fragrances and / or (simultaneously) reducing, suppressing and / or masking undesirable, unpleasant olfactory characteristics.
[0021] Further objects underlying the present invention follow from the description below and the present patent claims.

[0147] Food, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals or homecare products provide an optimal medium for microbial contaminants: With proteins, sugar, vitamins, oils and water, they contain everything microorganisms need to grow. In particular, cosmetic or pharmaceutical formulations with a higher water content and / or great surfaces, such as emulsions or wet-wipes, or formulations with natural ingredients, which are contaminated with bacteria innately, are susceptible against microbial growth. The neutral pH-value and the storage in a warm and humid bathroom contribute to an ideal climate for bacteria and moulds. Via hand and mouth, a lot of microorganisms get into the product. Sometimes the product is already contaminated during the production process, for example from contaminated raw materials. Most of the microorganisms are harmless to the consumer. However, microbial contaminants can cause dangerous infections. In addition, some moulds and bacteria produce toxins which can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations.
[0148] Thus, in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical or homecare products industry and also in the food industry there is an ongoing need for agents with antimicrobial properties for product protection.
[0149] The search for suitable (active) substances that possess one or more of the said properties to an adequate extent is made more difficult forthose skilled in the art because there is no clear dependence between the chemical structure of a substance, on the one hand, and its biological activity towards specific microorganisms (germs) and its stability, on the otherhand. Furthermore, there is no predictable relationship between the antimicrobial action, toxicological acceptability, tolerance by the skin and the stability of a substance.
[0150] Thus, there is still an ongoing need to develop novel compositions that are microbial safe and microbial stable during shelf life. The cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry is permanently searching for ingredients which can improve this aspect. In particular, there is continued interest in the market to improve both the potential and the range of efficiency of such antimicrobials, either by achieving a higher performance of an antimicrobial with the same amounts, or, vice versa, by achieving the same performance with lower amounts of an antimicrobial, so that the overall content of antimicrobials can be reduced in the ready-for-use formulation.
[0151] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a composition, which develop a synergistic action against a multiplicity of bacteria, yeast, mould and fungi, especially in a cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation or homecare product, and its use by which the activity or growth of microorganism in a cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation or homecare product can be suppressed or inhibited.
[0152] Furthermore, it is an object of the present invention, to provide a food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation or homecare product comprising said composition. Furthermore, it is an object of the present invention, to provide a substance, by which the antimicrobial efficacy of an antimicrobial component can be boosted. Furthermore, it is an object of the present invention, to provide a method for suppressing or inhibiting of microorganisms' growth in food, a cosmetic or a pharmaceutical preparation or homecare product.
[0153] The invention is based on the surprising finding that the use of one or more selected from the group consisting of ethyl 2-methylbenzoate, propyl 2-methylbenzoate, butyl 2-methyl-benzoate, pentyl 2-methylbenzoate, hexyl 2-methylbenzoate, [(E)-2’-methylbut-2’-enyl] 2-methylbenzoate and [(E)-3’-methylpent-3’-en-2’-yl] 2-methylbenzoate, or a fragrance composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein or a composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein in an antimicrobially effective amount, preferably with an antimicrobial compound, that results in a synergistic antimicrobial efficacy action against a multiplicity of microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, mould and fungi. The use of such a composition in food, a cosmetic or pharmaceutic preparation or homecare product in turn results in microbial stable formulations which can be stored. Surprisingly, the synergistic antimicrobial efficacy is directed also against species of the genus Candida, such asCandida albicans and Aspergillus, such as Aspergillus brasiliensis, which both are known to be combated only with great difficulty.
[0154] In a preferred embodiment, the use is for suppressing or inhibiting microorganism growth in food, a cosmetic or a pharmaceutical preparation or homecare product.

[0163]
[0164] :, the present disclosure relates to the use of one or more selected from the group consisting of ethyl 2-methylbenzoate, propyl 2-methylbenzoate, butyl 2-methyl-benzoate, pentyl 2-methylbenzoate, hexyl 2-methylbenzoate, [(E)-2'-methylbut-2'-enyl] 2-methylbenzoate and [(E)-3'-methylpent-3'-en-2'-yl] 2-methylbenzoate, or the fragrance composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein or the composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein for masking, inhibiting and / or reducing malodour. In many areas, perfumes or fragrances are used for masking malodours. Annoyance caused by malodours occurs frequently in daily life and impairs personal well-being. Such malodours are, for example, those resulting from substances transpired or excreted by humans, in particular, perspiration, faeces and urine, odours caused by animal faeces or urine, in particular, those of domestic pets, kitchen odours, such as those resulting from the preparation of onions, garlic, cabbage or fish, odours due to tobacco smoke, and in particular, cold tobacco smoke, moulds and waste.
[0165] In addition, malodours are caused by many industrially produced basic materials used in cleansing agents, such as, for example, detergents and fabric softeners, or in body care products, such as, for example, soaps and cosmetics. The use of specific cosmetic preparations, such as, for example, hair dyes, hair-forming agents and depilatories, also produce malodours. Many rubber and plastic products also produce malodours if, due to the method of their manufacture, they still contain quantities of highly odourous, volatile active ingredients.
[0166] These malodours are usually caused by particularly odourous substances which are, however, frequently only present in trace amounts. Such substances include, for example, ni-trogen-containing compounds such as ammonia and amines, heterocyclic compounds such as pyridines, pyrazines, indoles, etc. and sulphur-containing compounds such as hydrogensulfide, mercaptans, sulfides, etc. The masking of malodours is a problem, which is difficult to handle and solve with perfume or fragrance compositions. Various methods have been developed to counter or reduce malodour beyond odour masking with strong fragrance. Activated carbon and zeolites have been used as absorbents for malodours but these are not suited for incorporation into many products.
[0167] Thus, while it is apparent from the prior art that there are many methods which attempt to prevent malodour none are completely satisfactory. Thus, the underlying objective of the present invention was to provide compounds and compositions, which can be used not only for masking malodour, but also for malodour prevention, malodour elimination, malodour receptor blocking and perceptual integration.
[0168] This is solved by the use according to the fifteenth aspect of the present disclosure, of one or more selected from the group consisting of ethyl 2-methylbenzoate, propyl 2-methylben-zoate, butyl 2-methylbenzoate, pentyl 2-methylbenzoate, hexyl 2-methylbenzoate, [(E)-2'-methylbut-2'-enyl] 2-methylbenzoate and [(E)-3'-methylpent-3'-en-2'-yl] 2-methylbenzoate, or the fragrance composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein or thecomposition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein for masking, inhibiting and / or reducing malodour.
[0169] In a preferred embodiment of the use according to the fifteenth aspect, the malodour is selected from the group consisting of sweat, wet fabric, smoke, kitchen, bathroom, wet dog (pets), scalp malodour, fishy odours (TMA), intimate hygiene, and ammonia.
[0170] In the same or a further preferred embodiment of the use according to the fifteenth aspect, the use is for masking, inhibiting and / or reducing malodour in a formulation selected from the group consisting of all purpose cleaner, preferably comprising one or more of citric acid, formic acid, sodium hydroxide, dish wash concentrate and any combination thereof, rim blocks, fabric softener, liquid detergent, powder detergent, pods, incontinence pads, fem pads, carpet cleaner, textile refresher.
[0171] In the same or a further preferred embodiment of the use according to the fifteenth aspect, the one or more selected from the group consisting of ethyl 2-methylbenzoate, propyl 2-methylbenzoate, butyl 2-methylbenzoate, pentyl 2-methylbenzoate, hexyl 2-methylben-zoate, [(E)-2'-methylbut-2'-enyl] 2-methylbenzoate and [(E)-3'-methylpent-3'-en-2'-yl] 2-methylbenzoate, or the fragrance composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein or the composition according to any one of the aspects disclosed herein is used in an amount of 0.1 - 25%, preferably 0.1-15%, more preferably 0.1%-5%, most preferably 0.1%-2% weight percent, calculated on the total amount of the mixture.

[0350] Comp.4.2.2 Lush white florals and juicy pear brighten the top, while a crisp green salicylate facet adds freshness and body. The improved honey note rounds the finish for a comforting signature.
[0351] Ex.4.2.1 A bubble-gum fruitiness pops with a Wintergreen sparkle and a creamy ylang nuance. The ginger spicyness is turned up with a cleaner, less balsamic base.
[0352] Ex.4.2.2 A modern airy freshness with a soft cyclamen floralcy salicylate accent. It balances spice and sweetness to reveal a more nature ginger character.
[0353] Ex.4.2.3 Sun-kissed white floral note melts into a creamy, softly balsamic heart that amplifies the honeyed, edible comfort and reduces the ginger sharpness.

[0383] Comp.4.3.2 A refined cappuccino note with a cleaner, less sticky sweetness is lifted by a fresh green sparkle and floral body. Smooth and modern elegance while keeping the coffee signature perfectly in balance.
[0384] Ex.4.3.1 A white-floral heart of ylang and creamy petals gives the cappuccino theme a twist by dialing back the gourmand notes. A medicinal edge sharpens the profile and enhances the woody note.
[0385] Ex.4.3.2 Airy-cyclamen and jasmine notes brighten the composition by wrapping the coffee note in a soft, white-floral veil. The result feels less sticky and more aromatic, with a stronger lavender nuance that adds cleanliness and diffusion.
[0386] Ex.4.3.3 Perfectly balanced cappuccino character which is richerand more roasted. It unfolds into a creamy heart and a balsamic warmth rounds the finish.
