[0046] The objective of sensing services is to gain comprehensive awareness of the environment surrounding a sensing device. This may involve detecting, localizing, and tracking objects, forming images, and extracting features for recognition and classification purposes, and the like. Recently, the integrating of sensing and communication (ISAC) has been proposed for achieving both high-data rate communications and high-resolution obstacle detection by using the conventional hardware and spectrum resources, which will enhance sensing capabilities, improving accuracy in a scenarios where traditional sensing techniques may not perform well, such as in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions, or when high velocity resolution is required. Additionally, it may improve spectrum efficiency by sharing the communication and sensing spectrum band, and may eventually reduce hardware and installation costs by combining sensing and communication equipment / hardware.

[0047] The integrated sensing and communication services provided by 5G or beyond 5G systems could potentially benefit various types of services and target vertical applications. Currently, various use cases and their corresponding technical requirements have been described to make use of the capabilities of 5G-based sensing services. These use cases may include at least intrusion detection, for example, intruder detection in smart homes, pedestrian or animal intrusion detection on highways, or the like; assistance for autonomous driving, for example, sensing-assisted automotive maneuvering and navigation, sensing-assisted parking space determination, or the like; assistance for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight, for example, through trajectory tracing and collision avoidance; assistance for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in factory, for example, AGV detection and tracking, AMR collision avoidance, or the like; environment and weather monitoring for rain, pollution, and flooding, or the like; health monitoring for fall detection, contactless sleep monitoring, in-home health monitoring; and enhanced extended reality (XR) experiences.

[0048] To facilitate wireless sensing in 5G and beyond-5G scenarios, it is necessary to introduce a new functionality within the 5G Core (5GC) , specifically the sensing management function (SeMF) . The SeMF will be responsible for receiving different tpyes of sensing requests from various sensing clients, such as UEs, AFs (for example, the third apparatus illustrated in FIG. 1) , or NEFs. Upon receiving these requests, which include detailed information about the sensing area, quality of service (QoS) requirements, and optionally, the specific UE (s) to be sensed, the SeMF will be responsible for configuring and coordinating the sensing functions. Additionally, the SeMF will collect the sensing measurements (sensing data) and provide this data, or the sensing outputs derived from it, to the requesting sensing client. This can be done directly or via the NEF, particularly if the requesting client is a third-party external application or AF.

[0049] In an ISAC system, various types of sensing methods can be employed. RAN nodes, such as BSs and / or UEs, can participate in sensing procedures for either monostatic or bi-static sensing. The monostatic RAN-based sensing may involve a BS serving as both the transmitter / sounder (responsible for transmitting the sensing signal) and the receiver / sensor (responsible for receiving the sensing signal) , utilizing a system where the transmit and receive arrays are co-located. Further, the bi-static RAN-based sensing may involve a BS serving as the transmitter / sounder, with one or more other BSs serving as the receiver (s)  / sensor (s) . Additionally, the bi-static RAN and UE sensing allows for two scenarios: either the scenario that the RAN (such as the BS in the RAN) transmits the sensing signal and one or more UE (s) receive it to gather sensing data, or a UE transmits the signal and the RAN (BS) receives it. Moreover, the UE-based sensing can be divided into two categories, i.e., mono-static and bi-static types. In the mono-static UE-based sensing, a UE can function as both the transmitter and receiver, performing sensing by receiving its own transmitted signal. Conversely, the bi-static UE-based sensing may involve a pair of UEs using device-to-device (D2D) PC5 sidelink signals to perform sensing operations, with each UE receiving the transmitted signal from the peer UE. Finally, the multi-static sensing can provide flexibility in pairing the sensing transmitter and receiver, allowing one transmitter to send signals to multiple receivers and a receiver to measure signals from multiple transmitters.

[0050] Sensing data, also referred to as sensing measurements or sensing measurement information, includes data obtained from radio signals, such as those from 3GPP, non-3GPP networks, WiFi, radar, and Lidars, among others. These signals are influenced (e.g., reflected, refracted, or diffracted) by objects or environments of interest for sensing purposes. This sensing data can optionally be processed within various systems, including 5G / 6G networks, external servers, application servers, edge servers, or the like. The processed output, known as sensing outputs, comprises data specific to the requirements of service consumers or sensing clients.

[0051] The processing of sensing data can take place within the radio unit (RU) , with the measurement results reported to the SeMF. Alternatively, in a distributed architecture, a dedicated new network function within the 5G Core (5GC) , such as the SePF, can handle the processing of sensing measurements. The SePF can be hosted independently, co-located with the RAN or UE, or integrated with the SeMF, providing flexibility in the deployment and operation of sensing systems. However, the sensing performance of the ISAC system may need to be further improved, especially in terms of multiple sensing related operations responsive to a sensing service request.

[0052] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example process 200 for performing multiple sensing related operations responsive to a sensing service request according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 200 may involve the first apparatus 110, the second apparatus 120 and the third apparatus 130 as illustrated in FIG. 1. In some embodiments, the first apparatus may include a SeMF, the second apparatus may include a SePF, and the third apparatus may include an AF or a NF. It would be appreciated that although the process 200 has been described in the communication network 100 of FIG. 1, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios where different network devices are jointly deployed to provide respective services. Through the example process 200, the sensing performance of the ISAC system can be improved, particularly in terms of multiple sensing related operations responsive to a sensing service request.

[0053] As shown in FIG. 2, at 212, the third apparatus 130 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, a sensing service request 214 for a sensing object including at least a sensing request type and a monitoring duration. Then, based on receiving the sensing service request 214 at 216, at 220, the first apparatus 110 may trigger multiple sensing related operations for the sensing object corresponding to the sensing service request 214.

[0054] In some embodiments, the multiple sensing related operations may include at least detecting whether the sensing object enters a first zone of a predetermined area; starting tracking the sensing object when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area; and reporting information on the sensing object to the third apparatus at different periodicities when the sensing object is in other different zones of the predetermined area except for the first zone, for example, in a second zone or a third zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the third zone of the predetermined area can be within the second zone of the predetermined area, and the second zone of the predetermined area can be within the first zone of the predetermined area, as illustrated in FIG. 4 below. To be noted, the number of zones of the predetermined area herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. In some other embodiments, there may be any suitable number of zones within the predetermined area.

[0055] In such embodiments, the sensing request type may include at least Geo Fencing monitoring (for example, monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which authorized objects are allowed to travel) , Geo Caging monitoring (for example, monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which an approved flight route or a boundary of the zone is allowed to travel) , or NO-FLY zone monitoring (for example, monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which no object is allowed to travel) .

[0056] Further, in such embodiments, the monitoring duration may indicate a start time for monitoring a sensing object and / or an end time for monitoring a sensing object. For example, the monitoring duration can be continually active, time-constrained, or activated by specific events.

[0057] In some embodiments, the sensing service request 214 may further include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area. For example, this information can be a 3D map. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the sensing service request does not include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area (or alternatively include a part of the information) . In such embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine information on multiple zones of the predetermined area that are not included in the sensing service request. For example, in some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include information on one zone (e.g. the third zone) , then information on the other zones can be determined by the first apparatus 110 based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus 110 or at least one regulatory requirement associated with the sensing request type. Alternatively, in such embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine information on zones where privacy requirements are required to be adjusted, or information on zones where context switchover is required. In addition, in some embodiments, the sensing service request 214 may further include priorities for sensing related operation.

[0058] In some embodiments, the sensing service request 214 may further include at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. In such embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration. For example, in some embodiments, the at least one reporting configuration may include at least a type of a sensing object to be detected in a predetermined area, at least one criterion for reporting the sensing object detected in the predetermined area, frequency of reporting for the sensing object detected in the predetermined area, at least one criterion for changing the frequency of the reporting, at least one criterion for stopping the reporting, at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirement in different zones of the predetermined area, at least one criterion for adjusting privacy requirements, or at least one criterion for context switchover.

[0059] Alternatively, in some other embodiments, the sensing service request 214 may include no reporting configuration. In such embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine, based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus 110, at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. Then, the first apparatus 110 may determine the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration.

[0060] At 232, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a first subscription message 234 for reporting when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. Then, at 240, based on sensing measurement data collected from at least one sensing device (for example, the sensing transmitter or the sensing receiver, each of which can be either a base station or a UE) , determine whether the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. Then, at 252, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, a first notification message 254 for informing the first apparatus 110 that the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. Then, based on receiving the first notification message 254 at 256, at 260, the first apparatus 110 may determine to start tracking the detected sensing object.

[0061] In some embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may further transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a second subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in the second zone or the third zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device, the second apparatus 120 may determine whether the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area. Then, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, a second notification message for informing the first apparatus 110 that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area. In such case, based on receiving the second notification message, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a first configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) at a first periodicity, for example, for every 3s. After receiving this first configuration message, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity, the information can be derived from the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device. After receiving the information on the sensing object from the second apparatus 120, the first apparatus 110 may report, to the third apparatus 130, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity.

[0062] In addition, or alternatively, in some embodiments, based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device, the second apparatus 120 may determine whether the sensing object is detected in a third zone of the predetermined area. Then, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, a third notification message for informing the first apparatus 110 that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area. In such a case, based on receiving the third notification message, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a second configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) at a second periodicity. The first periodicity is longer than the second periodicity, for example, for every 100ms. After receiving this second configuration message, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, the information on the sensing object at the second periodicity, the information can be derived from the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device. After receiving the information on the sensing object from the second apparatus 120, the first apparatus 110 may report, to the third apparatus 130, the information on the sensing object at the second periodicity.

[0063] In some embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may further perform at least one switchover operation based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area. Alternatively, the first apparatus 110 may further perform at least one switchover operation based on determining that the sensing object is detected in a zone where the at least one switchover operation is required based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus 110. In such embodiments, the at least one switchover operation may include at least switching the multiple sensing related operations from the first apparatus and the second apparatus to a further first apparatus and a further second apparatus; updating at least one configuration for an ongoing sensing related operation; providing the updated configuration to at least one sensing related device; allocating at least one radio resource to at least one ongoing sensing related operation; adjusting at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirements based on at least one result of the multiple sensing related operations; adjusting at least one privacy requirement; activating at least one terminal device in idle mode to participate in the multiple sensing related operations; or instructing at least one terminal device to enable at least one sensing capability.

[0064] In some embodiments, based on determining that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus 120 may transmit, to the first apparatus 110, a fourth notification message for informing the first apparatus 110 that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area. In such case, based on receiving the fourth notification message, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a third configuration message for configuring the second apparatus 120 to stop tracking the sensing object. Based on this third configuration message, the second apparatus 120 may stop tracking the sensing object.

[0065] In some embodiments, based on determining that the monitoring duration is expired, the first apparatus 110 may transmit, to the second apparatus 120, a fourth configuration message for configuring the second apparatus 120 to stop the multiple sensing related operations. In such case, based on the fourth configuration message, the second apparatus 120 may stop the multiple sensing related operations.

[0066] For certain sensing service requests made to the 3GPP system by an AF, there may arise a necessity to perform multiple sensing operations to service the request. FIG. 3 illustrates an example representation of relation between a sensing service request and an ISAC system. As illustrated in FIG. 3, each of the multiple sensing operation identifiers (IDs) may be associated with a specific sensing service request ID. For instance, sensing operation ID=1 or 2 may represent monostatic sensing, involving a single base station (BS-1 or BS-2) respectively, where the transmitter / sounder and the receiver / sensor are co-located. Sensing operation ID=3 may represent another type of sensing operation, for example bi-static sensing, involving a BS (e.g. BS-3) serving as the transmitter / sounder, and one or more other BS (e.g. BS-4) serving as the receiver (s)  / sensor (s) . In FIG. 3, the sensing session ID (1000) may refer to a group of related sensing operations for addressing a specific sensing service request.

[0067] Some embodiments of the present disclosure may relate to the utilization of the SeMF, which may end up executing multiple sensing operations in response to a request from the AF to monitor and report on any objects (for example, the drones or the UAVs) detected within a NO-FLY zone or within some restricted areas where only the authorized drones or UAVs are allowed to fly (for example, Geo Fencing monitoring) .

[0068] FIG. 4 illustrates an example sensing area according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated in FIG. 4, the sensing area can be divided into for example three zones, such as the first zone (the area between X1 and X2) , the second zone (the area between X2 and X3) , and the third zone (the area between X3 and the center of area) . In such case, the first zone can be considered as the target area for sensing (for example the NO-FLY zone, where the intrusions should be detected and reported according to the request of the AF) , and the second and third zones can be considered as the pre-warning areas. To be noted, in some other embodiments of the present disclosure, the number of zones divided in the sensing area can be various, dependent on the implementations.

[0069] For instance, the SeMF could be configured to detect drones in the first zone. Upon detecting a drone in the first zone, the SeMF may then proceed to track the drone within the detected zone. As the drone is approaching the third zone, for example entering the second zone, the SeMF may start reporting (with a low frequency) to the AF that the drone is approaching the third zone. When the drone enters the third zone, the SeMF would need to report formation about the drone (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) continuously (with a higher frequency) , and continue the drone tracking phase.

[0070] At this point, various contexts of the sensing session may need a change. For instance, the sensing quality requirements may be more stringent within the third zone compared to the first and second zones. Depending on regulatory mandates, some or all privacy requirements may be overridden. Specialized hardware / software may need to be involved in the sensing process, and the network may need to abide by strict regulatory standards.

[0071] To meet these requirements, the network may need to execute a sensing context switchover, such as transferring the sensing session to another SeMF / SePF. Privacy policies may not be applicable in this zone, additional sensing capabilities may be activated at this point, higher sensing accuracy may be necessary, and so forth.

[0072] Alternatively, in some other embodiments of the present disclosure, the AF request may include a range of information (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) for performing specific sensing operations. For a drone-based delivery service or a drone taxi company, monitoring and tracking of drones are essential to guarantee adherence to approved flight routes or boundaries (for example, Geo Caging monitoring) . Therefore, the AF request may comprise specific instructions, including, for example, reporting the detection of a drone when it is within a specified distance range (for example, with the first zone) from the target area, initiating location tracking and reporting its position with a low frequency (for example, every 10 seconds) upon detection; increasing the frequency of reporting to a higher frequency (for example, every 3 seconds) as the drone is moving closer, for example, entering the second zone; and continuously reporting with an even higher frequency (for example, every 100 milliseconds) when the drone enters the target area, for example, the third zone.

[0073] To serve such request, the SeMF may need to perform multiple operations. First, the SeMF may establish an object detection sensing session to for detection of drone. Upon detecting a drone, the SeMF may initiate another sensing session for locating and tracking the drone. Initially, the location of the drone would be reported with a low frequency (for example, every 10 seconds) . Depending on the zone where the drone is located, the frequency of these reports would be adjusted to be even higher. When the drone moves out of the specified range provided in the request, the periodic reporting would cease. Furthermore, tracking of the drone may stop once it exits the sensing area, for example, outside the first zone. The SeMF may also support different contexts for sensing sessions with different requirements for the target areas (for example, the first zone, due to regulatory requirements) and the pre-warning areas (for example the second and third zones) , respectively.

[0074] To achieve this, several issues need to be addressed. Firstly, it is important to determine how an ISAC system to identify when a new sensing service request requires multiple sensing operations. Secondly, it is necessary to determine the sensing operations needed for each service request and when to initiate them. Thirdly, there is a need to adapt one or more sensing operations at a UE and / or a BS depending of the various event detection. Finally, it is necessary to determine how and when sensing context switchovers needs to be performed.

[0075] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for performing multiple sensing related operations responsive to a sensing service request. With this solution, for example, the interfaces between the sensing client (such as AF) and the SeMF can be enhanced, supporting specific sensing requests, such as object detection and monitoring. Furthermore, the SeMF is supported to trigger multiple sensing operations corresponding to a single request, or to change sensing context or perform context switchover based on certain intermediate events detected. In addition, the interface between the SeMF and the SePF can be enhanced for event detection and context management or switchover.

[0076] Specifically, in some embodiments of the present disclosure, the sensing client (such as AF / NF) is enabled to request use case-specific sensing service requests comprising various new parameters including the sensing request type (e.g., Geo Fencing monitoring, Geo Caging monitoring, No-Fly-Zone (NFZ) monitoring, etc. ) , the monitoring duration indicating the start and / or end time for sensing operations, the reporting configuration, and so forth. In some embodiments, the reporting configuration may include a variety of information, for example but not limited to, a type of a sensing object to be detected in a predetermined area; at least one criterion for reporting the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; frequency of reporting for the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; at least one criterion for changing the frequency of the reporting; at least one criterion for stopping the reporting; at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirement in different zones of the predetermined area; at least one criterion for adjusting privacy requirements; or at least one criterion for context switchover.

[0077] Further, in some embodiments of the present disclosure, the SeMF is enhanced to divide a single sensing service request from the sensing client (e.g., AF) into multiple, yet interconnected sensing operations. In cases that the reporting configuration is not included in the request, the internal logic of the SeMF can determine the appropriate configuration based on local configuration and thus decide to split the single sensing service request into multiple sensing operations. Moreover, the interfaces and interaction between SeMF and SePF can be enhanced to support the reporting and notification of new events when a specified type of object or target is detected within, entering, or leaving a predefined area of interest. Additionally, the SeMF is enabled to initiate a new sensing operation based on the notifications received from an ongoing sensing operation, where both operations may serve a single sensing service request from the sensing client.

[0078] Furthermore, in some embodiments, based on notifications received from the ongoing sensing operations, the SeMF can perform context switchovers, including, for example, transferring the sensing operation to a specialized set of SeMF and SePF for optimal handling; updating an ongoing sensing operation to include more sensing devices for improved accuracy and results, and providing the updated configurations to the sensing Rx and sensing Tx devices, such as the BS and UE; allocating more radio resources to the ongoing sensing operation to enhance the sensing QoS; overriding the privacy requirements if the regulations permit; incorporating non-3GPP sensor results into the calculation of the final result; activating some UEs in idle mode to participate in the sensing operation so as to expand the sensing capabilities; and instructing the nearby UEs to activate their necessary sensing capabilities; or any combinations thereof.

[0079] Furthermore, in some embodiments, certain sensing operations can be terminated based on notifications received from an ongoing sensing operation, for example, when the monitoring duration has expired. In addition, the SeMF may report to the sensing client (e.g., the AF) in accordance with the established reporting configuration.

[0080] FIGS. 5a-5d illustrate a signaling flow 500 for supporting sensing operation chaining according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The signaling flow 500 may involve the first apparatus 110 (also referred to as SeMF 505 shown in FIGS. 5a-5d) , the second apparatus 120 (also referred to as SePF 504 shown in FIGS. 5a-5d) and the third apparatus 130 (also referred to as AF 507 shown in FIGS. 5a-5d) , as illustrated in FIG. 1. In addition, the signaling flow 500 may further involve sensing receiver 501 and sensing transmitter 502 (each can be either a base station or a UE) , AMF 503, and NEF 506. It would be appreciated that although the signaling flow 500 has been described in the communication network 100 of FIG. 1, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios where different network devices are jointly deployed to provide respective services.

[0081] As shown in FIG. 5a, at 510, the AF 507 serving as a sensing client may transmit, to the SeMF 505, a sensing service request including at least a sensing request type (e.g., Geo Fencing monitoring, Geo Caging monitoring, No Fly zone (NFZ) monitoring, etc. ) and a monitoring duration indicating the start and / or end time for sensing related operations.

[0082] Optionally, in some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area. For example, this information can be a 3D map, and can be related to the target area (for example the third zone) and / or the pre-warning area (for example the first or second zone) . If the information provided by the AF 507 includes information on only one zone (e.g. the third zone) , information on the other zones can be determined by the SeMF 505 based on at least one local configuration of the SeMF 505 or at least one regulatory requirement associated with the sensing request type.

[0083] Optionally, in some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations, such as a type of a sensing object to be detected in a predetermined area, at least one criterion for reporting the sensing object detected in the predetermined area, frequency of reporting for the sensing object detected in the predetermined area, at least one criterion for changing the frequency of the reporting, at least one criterion for stopping the reporting, at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirement in different zones of the predetermined area, at least one criterion for adjusting privacy requirements, or at least one criterion for context switchover. Alternatively, if the reporting configuration is not provided in the sensing service request, the SeMF 505 may determine the reporting configuration based on at least one local configuration of the SeMF 505.

[0084] At 513, based on the at least one reporting configuration, the SeMF 505 may determine the multiple sensing related operations, such as detecting whether the sensing object enters a first zone of a predetermined area; starting tracking the sensing object when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area; and reporting information on the sensing object to the third apparatus at different periodicities when the sensing object is in other different zones of the predetermined area except for the first zone, for example, in a second zone or a third zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the third zone of the predetermined area can be within the second zone of the predetermined area, and the second zone of the predetermined area can be within the first zone of the predetermined area, as illustrated in FIG. 4. To be noted, the number of zones of the predetermined area herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of example embodiments. In some other embodiments, there may be any suitable number of zones within the predetermined area.

[0085] Conventionally, to configure the procedures for sensing object detection, the SeMF 505 may for example establish multiple sensing sessions with different base stations depending on the sensing area, as illustrated in the step 516. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, to achieve this, at 519, the SeMF 505 may subscribe to SePF 504 for event reporting when the object of interest is detected in the first zone. Based on the sensing measurement data collected from at least one sensing device (for example, the sensing receiver 501 and / or the sensing transmitter 502) at 522, the SePF 504 may determine whether the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. If the sensing object is detected in the first zone at 525, at 528, the SePF 504 may inform the SeMF 505 that the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. Then, at 531, the SeMF 505 may decide to start tracking the detected sensing object. For example, the SeMF 505 may decide to start a new sensing operation and / or update existing ones for the tracking of the detected object in the second zone. To be noted, the SeMF 505 does not yet responds or notify to the AF 507 at this moment due to the received notification, unlike the usual request-response based services.

[0086] FIG. 5b is a continuation of FIG. 5a. As illustrated in the step 534 of FIG. 5b, conventionally, to configure the procedures for tracking the sensing object, the SeMF 505 may for example establish multiple sensing sessions in case that multiple sensing objects that require tracking are detected. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, to achieve this, at 537, the SeMF 505 may subscribe to SePF 504 for event reporting when the object of interest is detected in the second or third zone. Based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device at 540, the SePF 504 may determine whether the sensing object is detected in the second or third zone of the predetermined area. If the sensing object is detected in the second zone, then, at 528, the SePF 504 may inform the SeMF 505 that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area. Subsequently, at 546, the SeMF 505 may configure the SePF 504 to continuously report information on the sensing object (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) at a, first periodicity for example, for every 3s. Based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device at 549, at 552, the SePF 504 may report the information on the sensing object to the SeMF 505. After receiving the information, at 555, the SeMF 505 may report, to the AF 507, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity.

[0087] FIG. 5c is a continuation of FIG. 5b. As illustrated in the step 558 of FIG. 5c, if the sensing object is detected in the third zone, the SePF 504 may inform the SeMF 505 that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area.

[0088] If it is detected that the criterions for context switchover are met at 561 (for example, the SeMF 505 detects that the sensing object has entered the third zone, or the SeMF 505 determines that the sensing object has entered a zone where context switchover is required based on local configuration) , then at 564, the SeMF 505 may perform context switchovers, for example, switching the multiple sensing related operations from the current SeMF 505 and the current SePF 504 to a further SeMF and a further SePF. In addition, in the case of context switchover, at 567, the SeMF 505 may further perform multiple operations for updating at least one configuration for an ongoing sensing related operation, such as including more sensors for the sensing related operations; changing radio frequency to get higher QoS; increasing type / amount of measurement data to be reported; providing the updated configuration to at least one sensing related device; allocating more radio resource to the ongoing sensing related operations; adjusting the sensing QoS requirements based on the result of the sensing related operations; adjusting the privacy requirement; activating more terminal devices in idle mode to participate in the sensing related operations; or instructing the terminal devices to enable at least one sensing capability.

[0089] At 570, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area, the SeMF 505 may configure the SePF 504 to continuously report information on the sensing object (for example, location, velocity, direction, or the like) at a second periodicity, for example, for every 100ms. Based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device at 573, at 576, the SePF 504 may report the information on the sensing object to the SeMF 505. After receiving the information, at 579, the SeMF 505 may report, to the AF 507, the information on the sensing object at the second periodicity.

[0090] FIG. 5d is a continuation of FIG. 5c. As illustrated in the step 582 of FIG. 5d, if it is detected that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area, then at 585, the SeMF 505 may terminate the sensing operation for tracking the sensing object. However, other sensing operations for tracking other objects may not be terminated.

[0091] At 588, if it is detected that the monitoring duration is expired, the at 591, the SeMF 505 may terminate all the sensing operations related to the sensing service request (including all the detection and tracking operation for the sensing object) .

[0092] It is noted that, the operations described above may be executed in any sequence, depending upon the implementations. In some embodiments, there might be only two zones defined: the first zone dedicated to object detection and tracking initiation, and the second zone for continuous reporting. With this solution, the interfaces between the sensing client and the SeMF can be enhanced, supporting specific sensing requests, such as object detection and monitoring. Furthermore, the SeMF is supported to trigger multiple sensing operations corresponding to a single request, or to change sensing context or perform context switchover based on certain intermediate events detected. In addition, the interface between the SeMF and the SePF can be enhanced for event detection and context management or switchover.

[0093] It is also noted, for the configuration messages from the SeMF to the RAN nodes (for example, the base station, like gNB) , the new radio (NR) positioning protocol A (NRPPa) signaling or other protocols over the next generation application protocol (NGAP) (like dedicated sensing protocols) could be utilized; for the configuration messages from the SeMF to the terminal device, the LTE positioning protocol (LPP) or other sensing protocols (e.g., via non-access stratum (NAS) messages that are either transparent or not to the AMF) could be utilized. Alternatively, these messages could be transferred using an NRPPa (or similar protocol) from the SeMF to the RAN Nodes, which would then forward them to the terminal device via RRC messages if the RAN node is the serving node for the terminal device.

[0094] For data reporting from the terminal devices and / or the base stations to the SePF, either the data / user plane signaling or the control plane, or a combination thereof could be used. For instance, large volumes of data could be transmitted via the data / user plane signaling. The choice of protocol may also depend on the type of receiver (UE or BS) and the type of reporting.

[0095] It is to be noted that the SePF can be placed within the core network, or alternatively, on an edge server or a multi-access edge computing (MEC) node, either internally or externally to the communication network.

[0096] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a first apparatus according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0097] At block 610, the first apparatus may receive, from a third apparatus, a sensing service request for a sensing object including at least a sensing request type and a monitoring duration. At block 620, the first apparatus may trigger multiple sensing related operations for the sensing object corresponding to the sensing service request.

[0098] In some embodiments, the multiple sensing related operations may include at least detecting whether the sensing object enters a first zone of a predetermined area; starting tracking the sensing object when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area; and reporting information on the sensing object to the third apparatus at different periodicities when the sensing object is in other different zones of the predetermined area except for the first zone.

[0099] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may further transmit, to a second apparatus, a first subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a first notification message indicating that a sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area, the first apparatus may further determine to start tracking the detected sensing object.

[0100] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may further transmit, to the second apparatus, a second subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in a second zone or a third zone of the predetermined area.

[0101] In such embodiments, based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a second notification message indicating that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area, the first apparatus may further transmit, to the second apparatus, a first configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object at a first periodicity. Then, the first apparatus may receive, from the second apparatus, the information on the sensing object. Then, the first apparatus may report, to the third apparatus, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity.

[0102] Further, in such embodiments, based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a third notification message indicating that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area, the first apparatus may further transmit, to the second apparatus, a second configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object at a second periodicity, wherein the first periodicity is longer than the second periodicity. Then, the first apparatus may receive, from the second apparatus, the information on the sensing object. Then, the first apparatus may report, to the third apparatus, the information on the sensing object at the second periodicity.

[0103] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may further perform at least one switchover operation based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area. Alternatively, in some other embodiments, the first apparatus may further perform at least one switchover operation based on determining that the sensing object is detected in a zone where the at least one switchover operation is required based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus. In such embodiments, the at least one switchover operation may include switching the multiple sensing related operations from the first apparatus and the second apparatus to a further first apparatus and a further second apparatus; updating at least one configuration for an ongoing sensing related operation; providing the updated configuration to at least one sensing related device; allocating at least one radio resource to at least one ongoing sensing related operation; adjusting at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirements based on at least one result of the multiple sensing related operations; adjusting at least one privacy requirement; activating at least one terminal device in idle mode to participate in the multiple sensing related operations; or instructing at least one terminal device to enable at least one sensing capability.

[0104] In some embodiments, based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a fourth notification message indicating that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area, the first apparatus may further transmit, to the second apparatus, a third configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to stop tracking the sensing object.

[0105] In some embodiments, based on determining that the monitoring duration is expired, the first apparatus may further transmit, to the second apparatus, a fourth configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to stop the multiple sensing related operations.

[0106] In some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. In such embodiments, the first apparatus may further determine the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration.

[0107] Alternatively, in some other embodiments, the sensing service request may include no reporting configuration. In such embodiments, the first apparatus may further determine, based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus, at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. Then, the first apparatus may determine the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration.

[0108] In some embodiments, the at least one reporting configuration includes at least a type of a sensing object to be detected in a predetermined area; at least one criterion for reporting the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; frequency of reporting for the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; at least one criterion for changing the frequency of the reporting; at least one criterion for stopping the reporting; at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirement in different zones of the predetermined area; at least one criterion for adjusting privacy requirements; or at least one criterion for context switchover.

[0109] In some embodiments, the sensing request type may include at least monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which authorized objects are allowed to travel (e.g., Geo Fencing monitoring) , monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which an approved flight route or a boundary of the zone is allowed to travel (e.g., Geo Caging monitoring) , or monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which no object is allowed to travel (e.g., NO-FLY zone monitoring) .

[0110] In some embodiments, the monitoring duration may indicate a start time for monitoring a sensing object and / or an end time for monitoring a sensing object. For example, the monitoring duration can be continually active, time-constrained, or activated by specific events.

[0111] In some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area. For example, this information can be a 3D map. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the sensing service request does not include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area (or alternatively include a part of the information) . In such embodiments, based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus or at least one regulatory requirement associated with the sensing request type, the first apparatus may determine information on multiple zones of the predetermined area that are not included in the sensing service request. Alternatively, in such embodiments, the first apparatus may determine information on zones where privacy requirements are required to be adjusted, or information on zones where context switchover is required.

[0112] In some embodiments, the third zone of the predetermined area may be within the second zone of the predetermined area, and the second zone of the predetermined area may be within the first zone of the predetermined area.

[0113] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may include a SeMF, the second apparatus may include a SePF, and the third apparatus may include an AF or a NF.

[0114] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a second apparatus according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the second apparatus 120 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0115] At block 710, the second apparatus may receive, from a first apparatus, a first subscription message for reporting when a sensing object is detected in a first zone of the predetermined area. At block 720, based on sensing measurement data collected from at least one sensing device, the second apparatus may determine whether the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. At block 730, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus may transmit, to the first apparatus, a first notification message for informing the first apparatus that the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area.

[0116] In some embodiments, the second apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, a second subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in a second zone or a third zone of the predetermined area.

[0117] In such embodiments, based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device, the second apparatus may further determine whether the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area. Then, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus may further transmit, to the first apparatus, a second notification message for informing the first apparatus that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the second apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, a first configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object at a first periodicity, for example, for every 3s. Then, the second apparatus may transmit, to the first apparatus, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity, the information can be derived from the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device.

[0118] Further, in such embodiments, based on the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device, the second apparatus may further determine whether the sensing object is detected in a third zone of the predetermined area. Then, based on determining that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus may transmit, to the first apparatus, a third notification message for informing the first apparatus that the sensing object is detected in the third zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the second apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, a second configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object at a second periodicity. Then, the second apparatus may transmit, to the first apparatus, the information on the sensing object at the second periodicity, the information can be derived from the sensing measurement data collected from the at least one sensing device. In such embodiments, the first periodicity may be longer than the second periodicity, for example, the first periodicity can be 3s, while the second periodicity can be 100ms.

[0119] In some embodiments, based on determining that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area, the second apparatus may further transmit, to the first apparatus, a fourth notification message for informing the first apparatus that the sensing object has moved outside the third zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the second apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, a third configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to stop tracking the sensing object. Then, based on the third configuration message, the second apparatus may stop tracking the sensing object.

[0120] In some embodiments, the second apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, a fourth configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to stop the multiple sensing related operations. Then, based on the fourth configuration message, the second apparatus may stop the multiple sensing related operations.

[0121] In some embodiments, the third zone of the predetermined area may be within the second zone of the predetermined area, and the second zone of the predetermined area may be within the first zone of the predetermined area.

[0122] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may include a SeMF, and the second apparatus may include a SePF.

[0123] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 800 implemented at a third apparatus according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the third apparatus 130 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0124] At block 810, the third apparatus may transmit, to a first apparatus, a sensing service request for a sensing object including at least a sensing request type and a monitoring duration.

[0125] In some embodiments, the third apparatus may further receive, from the first apparatus, information on a sensing object that is tracked by the first apparatus. In such embodiments, the information is received at a periodicity associated with a location of the sensing object.

[0126] In some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. In such embodiments, the at least one reporting configuration may include at least a type of a sensing object to be detected in a predetermined area; at least one criterion for reporting the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; frequency of reporting for the sensing object detected in the predetermined area; at least one criterion for changing the frequency of the reporting; at least one criterion for stopping the reporting; at least one sensing quality of service (QoS) requirement in different zones of the predetermined area; at least one criterion for adjusting privacy requirements; or at least one criterion for context switchover.

[0127] In some embodiments, the sensing request type may include at least monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which authorized objects are allowed to travel (e.g., Geo Fencing monitoring) , monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which an approved flight route or a boundary of the zone is allowed to travel (e.g., Geo Caging monitoring) , or monitoring whether a sensing object is detected in a zone within which no object is allowed to travel (e.g., NO-FLY zone monitoring) .

[0128] In some embodiments, the monitoring duration may indicate a start time for monitoring a sensing object and / or an end time for monitoring a sensing object. For example, the monitoring duration can be continually active, time-constrained, or activated by specific events.

[0129] In some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include information on multiple zones of the predetermined area. For example, this information can be a 3D map.

[0130] In some embodiments, the first apparatus may include a SeMF, and the third apparatus may include an AF or a NF.

[0131] In some embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing any of the method 600 (for example, the first apparatus 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 600. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0132] In some embodiments, the apparatus may comprise means for receiving, from a third apparatus, a sensing service request for a sensing object including at least a sensing request type and a monitoring duration; and means for triggering multiple sensing related operations for the sensing object corresponding to the sensing service request.

[0133] In some embodiments, the multiple sensing related operations may include at least detecting whether the sensing object enters a first zone of a predetermined area; starting tracking the sensing object when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area; and reporting information on the sensing object to the third apparatus at different periodicities when the sensing object is in other different zones of the predetermined area except for the first zone.

[0134] In some embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for transmitting, to a second apparatus, a first subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area. In such embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for determining to start tracking the detected sensing object based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a first notification message indicating that a sensing object is detected in the first zone of the predetermined area.

[0135] In some embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for transmitting, to the second apparatus, a second subscription message for reporting when the sensing object is detected in a second zone or a third zone of the predetermined area.

[0136] In such embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for transmitting, to the second apparatus, a first configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to report information on the sensing object at a first periodicity based on receiving, from the second apparatus, a second notification message indicating that the sensing object is detected in the second zone of the predetermined area; means for receiving, from the second apparatus, the information on the sensing object; and means for reporting, to the third apparatus, the information on the sensing object at the first periodicity.

[0140] In some embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for transmitting, to the second apparatus, a fourth configuration message for configuring the second apparatus to stop the multiple sensing related operations based on determining that the monitoring duration is expired.

[0141] In some embodiments, the sensing service request may further include at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations. In such embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for determining the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration.

[0142] Alternatively, in some other embodiments, the sensing service request may include no reporting configuration. In such embodiments, the apparatus may further comprise means for determining, based on at least one local configuration of the first apparatus, at least one reporting configuration associated with the multiple sensing related operations; and means for determining the multiple sensing related operations based on the at least one reporting configuration.
