[0033] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting example embodiments. Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0034] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication environment 100 involves one or more A-IoT devices 110 and a plurality of communication devices 120 (such as a communication device 120-1, a communication device 120-2…a communication device 120-N) . Each communication device 120 may serve as a reader of the A-IoT devices 110. The plurality of communication devices 120 may communicate with the A-IoT devices 110, respectively. The communication device 120 may communicate with a radio access network and a CN and thus may communicate with a CN network device 630. In some example embodiments, the reader may be a terminal device (e.g., interrogator) , and the A-IoT device 110 may be a tag. The terminal device as a reader can communicate with a base station.

[0035] The A-IoT refers to a new class of IoT devices primarily powered by harvesting ambient energy from radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other viable ambient energy source. The A-IoT device does not need to actively generate a signal but communicates by reflecting electromagnetic waves generated by other devices. Accordingly, as shown in FIG. 1, an A-IoT device 110 generally includes an energy harvesting module 112 and a backscattering module 114.

[0036] FIG. 2A illustrates an example topology 200A for a reader and device. As shown in FIG. 2A, the topology 200A involves a reader 120 (e.g., a base station) and an A-IoT device 110. In the topology 200A, the A-IoT device 110 directly and bidirectionally communicates with the reader 120. The communication between the reader 120 and the A-IoT device 110 includes A-IoT data and / or signaling. Note that there may be multiple A-IoT devices 110 (not shown in FIG. 2A) around the reader 120.

[0037] The A-IoT device 110 aims to inventory use case, where one or more readers perform inventory procedure or command among nearby A-IoT devices 110. For inventory usage, the reader 120 triggers an inventory procedure or transmits a command to the A-IoT devices 110. The reader 120 may schedule resources (e.g., time resources, frequency resources) for the A-IoT devices 110, and the A-IoT devices 110 respond to the inventory message or the command using the indicated time domain resource.

[0038] The reader 120 may use an orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) system to generate reader-to device (R2D) signals, and R2D signals are required to be aligned with OFDM symbol boundary. During the random access or data transmission procedure, after the A-IoT device 110 transmits a message, it needs to monitor a response from the reader 120 and then it may initiate a device-to-reader (D2R) transmission towards the reader 120. Due to cost issue, the A-IoT devices 110 do not have OFDM systems.

[0039] FIG. 2B illustrates an example transmission procedure 200B between the reader 120 and the A-IoT device 110. At Step A, the reader 120 transmits an A-IoT paging message to the A-IoT device 110. This step is initiated to establish initial contact and prepare subsequent communication.

[0040] At Step B, the A-IoT device 110 engages in an A-IoT random access procedure to facilitate the D2R data transmission. During this step, the A-IoT device 110 sends data to the reader 120.

[0041] Step C involves two sub-steps for data transmission. At Step C1, the reader 120 initiates R2D data transmission first including, for example, acknowledgments, commands, or other relevant information. At Step C2, the A-IoT device 110 performs another D2R data transmission. This allows the A-IoT device 110 to send any additional data that was not transmitted in Step B or to respond to commands from Step C1.

[0042] Although not shown, there may be multiple BSs, UEs, assisting nodes, or intermediate nodes that could be involved in the topology, respectively. The mixture of indoor and outdoor placement of such nodes is regarded as a network implementation choice. Accounts would need to be taken of potential impact on device or node complexity.

[0043] It should be understood that the number of devices and their connections in FIGS. 1-2B are given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The environment may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementations of the present disclosure.

[0044] FIG. 3A illustrates a signaling 300A for a random access procedure between the reader 120 and the A-IoT device 110. At Step 302, the reader 120 triggers a random access procedure between the reader 120 and the A-IoT device 110. At Step 304, the A-IoT device 110 transmits a message 1 (also referred to as Msg1) to the reader 120. The Msg1 contains a 16-bit device ID for the reader 120 to identify the A-IoT device 110 in the process of contention for access. At Step 306, the reader 120 transmits a message 2 (also referred to as Msg2) responding to the Msg1. The Msg2 contains information corresponding to the successfully received Msg1. Then, at Step 308, the A-IoT device 110 transmits a message 3 (also referred to as Msg3) with data to the reader 120.

[0045] FIG. 3B illustrates a signaling 300B for a data transmission procedure between the reader 120 and the A-IoT device 110. At Step 310, the reader 120 triggers a R2D transmission procedure to assign resources for D2R transmission. At Step 312, the A-IoT device 110 performs a D2R transmission. If the D2R transmission is successful, no further operation is needed. If not, at Step 314, the reader 120 requests retransmission or allocates resources for retransmission. If requested, at Step 316, the A-IoT device 110 performs the retransmission.

[0046] For D2R scheduling, the following information may potentially be explicitly or implicitly indicated to the A-IoT devices via corresponding physical reader-to-device channel (PRDCH) : time domain resources, frequency domain resources, modulation and coding scheme (MCS) -like information, chip duration, ID associated with device (s) , and repetitions.

[0047] The information may be transmitted via PRDCH. Specifically, two options are included. For example, Option 1 includes layer 1 (L1) -R2D control information, and Option 2 includes higher-layer signaling. Note that other L1-R2D control information for D2R scheduling can still be possible.

[0048] Frequency division multiple access (FDMA) and / or time division multiple access (TDMA) of D2R transmissions for Msg3 from multiple A-IoT devices in response to a given set of one or more Msg2 transmission (s) during access procedure are also studied, including how the frequency and time domain resources are allocated for the FDMA and / or TDMA of D2R transmissions for Msg3.

[0049] PUSCH time domain resource allocation A for normal cyclic prefix (CP) is proposed, and the time domain resource assignment utilizes 4 bits. In NR, the time domain resource is defined by start symbol index (represented as S) and length (represented as L) , which is common for the OFDM system, but not applicable to A-IoT devices for D2R transmission.

[0050] In view of the above, details with regard to time domain resource indication in the R2D transmission are expected to propose.

[0051] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, solutions are proposed for indicating a time domain resource in an A-IoT procedure. In a solution, a first device obtains at least one of the following for transmitting a message to a second device: a granularity of a time domain resource, or a transmission scheme. The first device determines the time domain resource based on at least one of the granularity or the transmission scheme. The first device transmits, to the second device, the message using the time domain resource. In this way, an A-IoT device can determine all or part of the time domain resource for D2R transmission based on a granularity of a time domain resource and / or a transmission scheme.

[0052] The following will describe the details with reference to FIGS. 4 to 8.

[0053] Reference is now made to FIG. 4, which illustrates a signaling flow 400 for determining a time domain resource according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The signaling flow 400 involves one or more first devices 410 and a second device 420. In some example embodiments, each first device 410 may include or be implemented as an A-IoT device, for example, the A-IoT device 110. The second device 420 may include or be implemented as a reader, for example, the reader 120. In some example embodiments, the second device 420 may have one or more reader functions for the first device (s) 410. A reader function may be considered as a reader. For the purposes of discussion, some embodiments related to the signaling flow 400 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1.

[0054] In some examples, the second device 420 allocates 402 a time domain resource for the one or more first devices 410 for transmitting a message (s) to the second device 420.

[0055] In some example embodiments, the message (s) may include a first message (s) responding to a trigger signal transmitted to the one or more first devices 410, and the time domain resource may be used for transmitting the first message (s) from the one or more first devices 410 to the second device 420. In some cases, as shown in FIG. 3A, the trigger signal may be used to trigger random access, and the first message may be implemented as MSG1.

[0056] In some example embodiments, the message (s) may include a third message (s) responding to a second message transmitted to the one or more first devices 410, and the time domain resource may be used for transmitting the third message (s) from the one or more first devices 410 to the second device 420. In some cases, as shown in FIG. 3A, the second message may be implemented as MSG2, and the third message may be implemented as MSG3. Alternatively, the transmission of the message may also be applicable to Steps 312 and 316 in FIG. 3B.

[0057] For ease of discussion, a single first device 410 is taken as an example. The first device 410 obtains 404 a granularity of the time domain resource allocated by the second device 420, and / or a transmission scheme, which are used for determining the time domain resource. That is, in the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the first device 410 is capable of determining allocation of the time domain resource itself based on certain factors, including the granularity of the time domain resource, and / or the transmission scheme. In some examples, the granularity of the time domain resource may be predetermined or predefined in the specifications. In some examples, the granularity of the time domain resource may be indicated to the first device 410 by the second device 420.

[0058] The granularity of the time domain resource may refer to the size of one unit of time domain resource. The granularity may include one or more parts. In some example embodiments, the granularity may include a chip duration. A “chip duration” may refer to the time duration of one chip. A “chip” may refer to the shortest duration of one high voltage or one low voltage to be used to convey information bits. Alternatively, or additionally, the granularity may include a modulated symbol. In D2R, a modulated symbol may correspond to a chip at least for on-off keying (OOK) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) .

[0059] Alternatively, or additionally, the granularity may include a first number of chip durations (represented as M) associated with an OFDM symbol duration of the second device 420. Alternatively, or additionally, the granularity may include a predetermined number of chip durations. Alternatively, or additionally, the granularity may include a second number of chip durations associated with a predetermined number of information bits in the message. The details for these types of granularities will be further described below.

[0060] In some example embodiments, at least one of the above-mentioned parts included in the granularity of the time domain resource may be indicated to the first device 410 by the second device 420. For example, the first number of chip durations or the second number of chip durations may be indicated by the second device 420. Alternatively, at least one of the parts included in the granularity of the time domain resource may be predefined. For example, the chip duration or the modulated symbol may be predefined.

[0061] The parts included in the granularity of the time domain resource will be further described in combination with specific examples below. By defining the granularity of the time domain resource, the overhead of the time domain resource indication can be saved.

[0062] Alternatively, or additionally, as mentioned above, the first device 410 further obtains a transmission scheme for transmitting the message (e.g., first message, third message) from the first device 410 to the second device 420. The transmission scheme includes a coding mode, code rate, data format, and the like. In some example embodiments, the transmission scheme may include at least one of the following parts: a size of a transmission block (represented as TBS) for transmitting the message, an amble (e.g., preamble, midamble, postamble) of the message, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code of the message, a channel code (e.g., convolutional code) of the message, a line code (e.g., Manchester code) of the message, or a repetition number (represented as N) of information bits in the message to be transmitted from the first device 410 to the second device 420.

[0063] In some example embodiments, at least one of the above-mentioned parts included in the transmission scheme may be indicated to the first device 410 by the second device 420. For example, the size of the transmission block for transmitting the message or the repetition number of information bits in the message may be indicated by the second device 420. Alternatively, at least one of the parts included in the transmission scheme may be predefined. For example, the amble, the channel code or the line code in the message may be predefined.

[0064] The transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes one or more codes. For example, for one case, the transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code, a channel code and a line code. For another case, the transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code and channel code and includes no line code. The specific examples described below only involve some cases, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0065] The parts included in the transmission scheme will be further described in combination with specific examples below. It should be noted that there may be other code combinations or other parts in the transmission schemes developed in the future, which should not constitute any limitation on the functionality and scope of the embodiments described herein.

[0066] Continuing with reference to FIG. 4, the first device 410 determines 406 the time domain resource based on the granularity and / or the transmission scheme. In some example, at least part of the time domain resource may be determined based on the granularity and a bit width corresponding to the granularity. A bit width may also be referred to as a field. The number of bits included in the field is referred to as the bit width, and the specific bit value included in the field may be referred to as a value in the bit width. For example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource. The first device 410 may receive a bit width and obtain a value from the bit width. Then, the first device 410 may multiply the value with the corresponding granularity to obtain a time duration or obtain the time duration based on the value and the granularity. The first device 410 may determine the time domain resource based on the time duration. That is, the time duration is part or whole of the time domain resource.

[0067] In some examples, the bit width may be associated with the transmission scheme. In some example embodiments, the bit width corresponding to the granularity may be determined based on at least one of: a maximum size of a transmission block (represented as maximum TBS) , the TBS for transmitting the message, CRC code bits, a channel code rate, a line code rate, chips of overhead, or the repetition number of information bits in the message. The bit width will be further described in combination with specific examples below.

[0068] As shown in FIG. 4, the first device 410 transmits 408 the message to the second device 420 using all or part of the time domain resource determined. The second device 420 receives 412 the message.

[0069] The above has described the signaling flow 400 for determining the time domain resource and transmitting the message using all or part of the time domain resource. Thefollowing will describe specific examples of how to determine the time domain resourceby the first device with reference to FIGS. 5A to 5C.

[0070] In some examples, the granularity (represented as Granularity 0) may include achip duration or a modulated symbol, and the transmission scheme may indicate that themessage includes a CRC code, a convolutional code and a line code. Then, a bit widthcorresponding to Granularity 0 may be determined based on the maximum TBS for atransmission between the first device 410 and the second device 420, the number of bitsin the CRC code (also referred to as CRC code bits) , the channel code rate, the line coderate, and chips of overhead. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may bedetermined based on the value obtained from the bit width and Granularity 0corresponding to the bit width.

[0071] As an example, Granularity 0 is defined as one chip or one modulated symbol.The transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code with 6 or 16bits (represented as CRC bits) , a tail biting convolutional code (e.g., channel code rate =1 / 3) , and a Manchester code (e.g., line code rate = 1 / 2) . Assume that the maximum TBSis about 1000bits in the physical layer for R2D direction (i.e., from the second device 420to the first device 410) and D2R direction (i.e., from the first device 410 to the seconddevice 420) . Overall chips are represented as chipoverall. Chips of overhead is representedas chipoverhead. Then, chipoverall may be determined based on the maximum TBS, the CRCcode bits, the channel code rate, and the line code rate. For example, chipoverall = (maximum TBS + CRC bits)  / channel code rate  /  line code rate ≈ (1000+16) × 3 × 2 = 6096 chips, using 13-bit width is sufficient to indicate 6096 chips. The bit widthcorresponding to Granularity 0 may be determined based on chipoverall and chipoverhead,which may be represented as where chipoverhead may include chips for amble, such as preamble, midamble, postamble, and the like. Then, the time domain resource may be determined through multiplying thevalue obtained from the bit width “bit width” by the granularity “Granularity 0”. Thefloor function or ceiling function may be performed in Equation (1) to obtain an integerbit width.

[0072] If the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code and convolutional code and includes no line code (e.g., Manchester code) , the bit width may be reduced to 12-bit width using Equation (1) . At this point, the line code rate = 1.

[0073] In some examples, the granularity may include the first number of chip durations (i.e., M) associated with an OFDM symbol duration of the second device 420. Such a granularity is represented as Granularity 1. The transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code, a convolutional code and a line code. Then, a bit width corresponding to Granularity 1 may be determined based on the maximum TBS, CRC code bits, the channel code rate, the line code rate, and chips of overhead. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined based on the value obtained from the bit width and Granularity 1 corresponding to the bit width.

[0074] FIG. 5A illustrates a schematic diagram 500A for Granularity 1 of a time domain resource according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. Block 502 represents an OFDM symbol duration of the second device 420. Block 504 represents a chip duration if the first number of chip durations M = 1. Block 506 represents a chip duration if the first number of chip durations M = 2. In other words, 1 chip duration=1 / 2 OFDM symbol durations. Block 508 represents a chip duration if the first number of chip durations M = 4. In other words, 1 chip duration=1 / 4 OFDM symbol durations.

[0075] As an example, subcarrier spacing is equal to 15kHz, a chip duration = 1 / M *OFDM symbol duration, and Granularity 1 may be defined as a group of M chips. For another example, a slot includes 7 chips, and Granularity 1 may be defined as a group of 7M chips. For still another example, a subframe includes 14 chips, and Granularity 1 may be defined as a group of 14M chips. the bit width corresponding to Granularity 1 may be represented as where N1 may be any integer. In some examples, N1 may be an integer multiple of M,  e.g., N1=M, 7M, 14M, etc. Then, the time domain resource may be determined through multiplying the value obtained from the bit width “bit width” by the granularity “Granularity 1” .

[0076] In some examples, the granularity (represented as Granularity 2) may include a predetermined number of chip durations, and the transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code, a convolutional code and a line code. Then, a bit width corresponding to Granularity 2 may be determined based on the maximum TBS, the CRC code bits, the channel code rate, the line code rate, and the chips of overhead. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined based on the value obtained from the bit width and Granularity 0 corresponding to the bit width.

[0077] FIG. 5B illustrates a schematic diagram 500B for Granularity 2 of a time domain resource according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. Granularity 2 may be defined as a fixed number of chips. For example, as shown in 5B, Block 510 represents a chip duration if the first number of chip durations is 4. Then Granularity 2 may be defined as a group of 7 chips.

[0078] The bit width corresponding to Granularity 2 may be represented as where N2 may be a predetermined value, e.g., N2=7, 14, etc. Then, the time domain  resource may be determined through multiplying the value obtained from the bit width “bit width” by the granularity “Granularity 2” .

[0079] As another example, a slot includes 7 chips, Granularity 2 may be 7 chips, and the corresponding bit width may be 10-bit width using Equation (3) . For still another example, a subframe includes 14 chips, Granularity 2 may be 14 chips, and the corresponding bit width may be 9-bit width using Equation (3) . Then, the time domain resource may be determined based on the value obtained from the bit width and the granularity corresponding to the bit width.

[0080] In some examples, the granularity (represented as Granularity 3) may include a second number of chip durations associated with a predetermined number of information bits in the message, and the transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code, a convolutional code and a line code. Then, a bit width corresponding to Granularity 3 may be determined based on the maximum TBS and CRC code bits. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined based on the value obtained from the bit width and Granularity 3 corresponding to the bit width.

[0081] By way of example, Granularity 3 may be defined as a group of chips that corresponds to an information bit or a fixed number of information bits. The bit width corresponding to Granularity 3 may be represented as where N3 may be a predetermined value, e.g., N3=1, 8, etc. Then, the time domain resource  may be determined through multiplying the value obtained from the bit width “bit width” by the granularity “Granularity 3” .

[0082] For example, Granularity 3 corresponds to 1 information bit, and the corresponding bit width may be 10-bit width using Equation (4) . For another example, Granularity 3 corresponds to 8 information bits, and the corresponding bit width may be 7-bit width using Equation (4) .

[0083] In some example embodiments, the time domain resource may be determined based on a first granularity of the time domain resource for transmitting a number of first information bits (e.g., control parts) in the message and a second granularity of the time domain resource for transmitting a number of second information bits (e.g., data parts) in the message. The first granularity and the second granularity may be collectively referred to as Granularity 4. A bit width corresponding to Granularity 4 may be determined based on the maximum TBS (including two TBS for two types of information bits) and M. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined based on the value obtained from the bit width and Granularity 4 corresponding to the bit width.

[0084] FIG. 5C illustrates a schematic diagram 500C for Granularity 4 of a time domain resource according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. Granularity 4 may include two types of granularities, e.g., one granularity with M chips is used to transmit control part of the D2R transmission, and another granularity with a fixed number of chips (e.g., 4M chips or 7 chips) is used to transmit data part of the D2R transmission. In some examples, the first granularity is used to transmit the control part in the message and the second granularity is used to transmit the data part in the message.

[0085] The TBS for transmitting the control part may be represented as TBcontrol, and the TBS for transmitting the data part may be represented as TBdata. The maximum TBS = TBcontrol + TBdata. The maximum TBS is defined for the overall information bits. The bit width corresponding to the first granularity and the second granularity may be represented as where N3 may be a predetermined value, e.g., N3=1, 8, etc. M1 and M2 may be an integer  multiple of M. For example, using M1 may obtain the bit width corresponding to the control information (corresponding to the first granularity) , and using M2 may obtain the bit width corresponding to the data information (corresponding to the second granularity) . Thus, the bit width corresponding to Granularity 4 may be determined based on TBcontrol, TBdata and M. Then, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined through multiplying the value obtained from the bit width “bit width” by the second granularity. In this way, the upper limit of the time domain resource is obtained, and the second device 420 may send control information with a time domain resource indication with the first granularity or the second granularity to schedule the D2R transmission.

[0086] In some examples, the bit width corresponding to Granularity 4 may be determined based on TBdata and M, which may be represented as where N3 may be a predetermined value, e.g., N3=1, 8, etc. M2 may be an integer multiple  of M. At this point, a value of the bit width (i.e., a value in the field) corresponding to the control information may be a fixed value.

[0087] Assuming the control part with fixed time duration or fixed bit number, the second device 420 may only indicate the time domain resource of conveying data information part, i.e. "TBdata" . The first device 410 may obtain the time duration of conveying "TBdata" by multiplying a value of the bit width corresponding to the data information and the second granularity, and further adding the time resource of the control part as the fixed time duration or product of the fixed bit number and the first granularity, to obtain the time domain resource.

[0088] In other words, all or part of the time domain resource may be determined through adding two parts: one is a first product of the fixed value of the number of bits corresponding to the control information and the first granularity, and the other one is a second product of a value of the bit width corresponding to the data information and the second granularity.

[0089] In some examples, descriptions with regard to time domain resource assignment may be summarized in Table 1 below. Table 1: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.212

[0090] The above has described how to determine the time domain resource based on the bit width and the corresponding granularity if the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code, a convolutional code and a line code. In some cases, at least one of the CRC code, the channel code or the line code is unnecessary. The following will describe how to obtain a bit width based on different transmission schemes with reference to FIG. 6.

[0091] FIG. 6 illustrates a schematic diagram for an example transmission scheme 600 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The transmission scheme 600 indicates that the message includes a CRC code, a channel code and a line code. D2R information bits are to be transmitted by the first device 410. At Block 602, a CRC code may be attached to the D2R information bits. At Block 604, the D2R information bits may be further coded using a channel code (e.g., forward error correction (FEC) code, convolutional code) . In some examples, the D2R information bits may be repeated multiple times (represented as repetition number N) before Block 604 or after Block 604. For example, the D2R information bits may be first repeated multiple times and then coded using the channel code. For another example, the D2R information bits may be first coded using the channel code and then repeated multiple times. At Block 606, the D2R information bits may be coded using a line code. In some examples, the transmission scheme 600 includes small frequency shift. For example, at Block 608, the D2R information bits may be performed small frequency shift. At Block 610, the D2R information bits may be modulated to obtain the message to transmit to the second device 420.

[0092] In some cases, the rules of ambles are predetermined, and chips of amble may not be considered when the time domain resource is determined. In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive control information from the second device 420. The control information includes a first bit width. The first bit width may be determined based on a first number of chips without amble (represented as Tchips, noamble) . The time domain resource may be determined based on the first bit width and the chips of overhead.

[0093] As an example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource. Tchips, noamble may be obtained based on the time domain resource. The first bit width is determined based on Tchips, noamble. The second device 420 may transmit control information to schedule the D2R transmission. The control information includes the first bit width for conveying information bits. If the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code, channel code and line code, the maximum chips for the value Tchips, noamble would be (maximum TBS+CRC bits)  / channel code rate / line code rate. The first bit width may be represented as where Nx is a constant. In some examples, Nx may represent N1, N2, or N3, respectively.

[0094] The first device 410 may receive the control information and derive Tchips, noamble based on the first bit width included in the control information. The first device 410 may use Tchip, noamble to obtain the TBS for the D2R transmission. Then the first device 410 may determine the time domain resource by adding Tchips, noamble and chips of overhead (represented as Toverhead) . That is, all chips corresponding to the actual allocated time domain resource Tchipall = Tchips, noamble + Toverhead.

[0095] In some examples, Toverhead may include the overhead chips of ambles. In some examples, Toverhead may include the overhead chips of preamble. Alternatively, or additionally, Toverhead may include the overhead chips of midamble. Alternatively, or additionally, Toverhead may include the overhead chips of postamble.

[0096] In some examples, Toverhead may include a padding chip. For example, when multiple first devices are scheduled with FDM, padding chip (s) may be introduced to align the end time of different first devices and the padding chip (s) can be pre-configured or derived based on parameters like Tchip, noamble or FDM frequency domain resource.

[0097] In some other examples, Toverhead may include chips with other functionality. The chips with other functionality (e.g., synchronization) may be derived in the same way at the first device 410 and at the second device 420.

[0098] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive control information from the second device 420. The control information includes a bit width which is determined based on Tchipall. The time domain resource may be determined based on such a bit width.

[0099] As an example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource. Tchipall may be obtained based on the time domain resource. For example, Tchipall may include overhead chips of amble, padding and the like. The first device 410 may receive the control information and derive overhead chips of amble, padding and the like to obtain the TBS. The requirement is that the overhead chips of midamble may depend on the chips needed for information, and the derivation may require computation capability of the first device 410, i.e., Tchipall = Tchip, noamble + Toverhead and Toverhead = function (Tchip, noamble) , and the function may not be linear.

[0100] The examples described above are related to the transmission scheme indicating that the message includes a CRC code, channel code and line code, and only consider the overhead chips of ambles and / or padding chips. In some cases, the transmission scheme may indicate that the message includes a CRC code and line code and includes no channel code.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, control information including a second bit width. The second bit width may be determined based on a second number of chips without a channel code (represented as Tchips, nochannelcode) . The time domain resource may be determined based on at least one of the second bit width, the channel code rate, or Toverhead.

[0102] As an example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource for the one or more first devices 410. Tchips, nochannelcode may be obtained based on the time domain resource. The second bit width is determined based on Tchips, nochannelcode. The second device 420 may transmit control information to schedule the D2R transmission. The control information includes the second bit width for conveying information bits. Since the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code and line code and includes no channel code, the maximum chips for the value Tchips, nochannelcode would be (maximum TBS+CRC bits)  / line code rate. Assume that the maximum TBS is about 1000bits in the physical layer, the CRC code has 16 bits, the channel code is a tail biting convolutional code, and the line code is Manchester code, and the line code rate is 1 / 2. Then, Tchips, nochannelcode ≈ (1000 + 16)  / 2= 2032, and using 11-bit width is sufficient to indicate 2032 chips. The second bit width may be represented as:

[0103] If the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, nochannelcode, all chips corresponding to the actual time domain resource may be obtained through multiplying Tchips, nochannelcode by the channel code rate. That is, Tchipall =Tchips, nochannelcode ×3. At this point, the time domain resource is determined based on the second bit width and the channel code rate.

[0104] Alternatively, the second bit width may be represented as:

[0105] If the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, nochannelcode, all chips corresponding to the actual time domain resource may be obtained through multiplying Tchips, nochannelcode by the channel code rate. That is, Tchipall =Tchips, nochannelcode ×3+ Toverhead. At this point, the time domain resource is determined based on the second bit width, the channel code rate and the chips of overhead. The chips of overhead may include at least one of: the overhead chips of preamble, midamble or postamble.

[0106] In some cases, the D2R transmission supports either the Manchester line code or no line code (one to be down-selected) . In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, control information including a third bit width. The third bit width is determined based on a third number of chips without a line code (represented as Tchips, nolinecode) . The time domain resource may be determined based on at least one of the third bit width, the line code rate, or the chips of overhead.

[0107] As an example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource. Tchips, nolinecode may be obtained based on the time domain resource. The third bit width is determined based on Tchips, nolinecode. The second device 420 may transmit control information to schedule the D2R transmission. The control information includes the third bit width for conveying information bits. Since the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code and channel code and includes no line code, the maximum chips for the value Tchips, nolinecode would be (maximum TBS+CRC bits)  / channel code rate. Assume that the maximum TBS is about 1000bits in the physical layer, the CRC code has 16 bits, the channel code is a tail biting convolutional code, and the channel code rate is 1 / 3. Then, Tchips, nolinecode ≈ (1000 + 16) ×3= 3048, and using 12-bit width is sufficient to indicate 3048 chips. The third bit width may be represented as

[0108] If the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, nolinecode, all chips corresponding to the actual time domain resource may be obtained through multiplying Tchips, nolinecode by the line code rate. That is, Tchipall = Tchips, nolinecode ×2. At this point, the time domain resource is determined based on the third bit width and the line code rate.

[0109] Alternatively, the third bit width may be represented as

[0110] If the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, nolinecode, all chips corresponding to the actual time domain resource may be obtained through multiplying Tchips, nolinecode by the line code rate. That is, Tchipall = Tchips, nolinecode ×2+ Toverhead. At this point, the time domain resource is determined based on the third bit width, the line code rate and the chips of overhead. The chips of overhead may include at least one of: the overhead chips of preamble, midamble or postamble.

[0111] In some cases, for D2R scheduling, the time domain resource and the repetition number may be explicitly or implicitly indicated to the first device 410 via the corresponding PRDCH. In NR, PUSCH type A / B repetition is performed on a group of symbols with repetition. In NR, DMRS symbols are included in each repetition with fixed position referring to slot. In some examples, if chips of ambles are included, the chips repetition may not repeat them. For example, the preamble or postamble only needs once, and the existence or the number of midambles may depend on total chips.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, control information indicating the repetition number N of information bits in the message. The control information may include a fourth bit width, and the fourth bit width may be determined based on a fourth number of chips (represented as Tchips, norepetition) . The time domain resource may be determined based on the repetition number N and the fourth bit width.

[0113] As an example, the second device 420 allocates a time domain resource. Tchips, norepetition may be obtained based on the time domain resource. The fourth bit width is determined based on Tchips, norepetition. The second device 420 may transmit control information to schedule the D2R transmission. The control information includes the second bit width for conveying information bits. Assume that the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code, line code and a channel code. In some example embodiments, the time domain resource may be further determined based on an overhead chip of amble.

[0114] If Tchips, norepetition includes overhead chips of all ambles (e.g., preamble, midamble, and / or postamble) and when the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, norepetition, the first device 410 may determine the time domain resource by excluding the overhead chips of all ambles in one repetition, multiplying remaining chips with repetition number N, and adding the overhead chips of all ambles based on the multiplication result. Adding the chips of midamble may require the comparison between the multiplying result and a threshold Th, if the multiplying result in the range of (R*Th, (R+1) *Th] , R midamble is required. The same procedure is applicable to all cases of Tchips, norepetition.

[0115] For example, Tchips, norepetition =500, including 10 chips of preamble and 10 chips of postamble, and no midamble. The first device 410 may exclude the overhead of the preamble and postamble to obtain 480 chips and multiply with N=4 to obtain 1920 chips. With Th=1000 chips, 1920 chips would require one midamble with 10 chips, and the time domain resource may be determined to be a sum of 10 chips of preamble, 1920 chips after repetition, 10 chips of midamble and 10 chips of postamble, i.e., 1950 chips.

[0116] If Tchips, norepetition does not include overhead chips of ambles and when the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, norepetition, the first device 410 may determine the time domain resource by multiplying Tchips, norepetition by the repetition number N, and adding the overhead chips of all ambles based on the multiplication result.

[0117] If Tchips, norepetition includes overhead chips of midamble, but includes neither overhead chips of preamble nor overhead chips of postamble, and when the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, norepetition, the first device 410 may determine the time domain resource by excluding the overhead chips of midamble from Tchips, norepetition, multiplying remaining chips with the repetition number N, adding the overhead chips of midamble based on the multiplication result, and then adding the overhead chips of preamble and the overhead chips of postamble.

[0118] If Tchips, norepetition includes the overhead chips of preamble and the overhead chips of postamble, but includes no overhead chips of midamble, and when the first device 410 receives the control information with the indicated value Tchips, norepetition, the first device 410 may determine the time domain resource by excluding the overhead chips of preamble and the overhead chips of postamble, multiplying remaining chips with the repetition number N, adding the overhead chips of midamble based on the multiplication result, and then adding the overhead chips of preamble and / or the overhead chips of postamble.

[0119] The above has described different transmission schemes with different code combinations. In some cases, the transmission scheme may further involve the TBS and the repetition number N. Then, the time domain resource may be determined at least based on the TBS and the repetition number N. Specific embodiments will be described below.

[0120] In some cases, the TBS is explicitly or implicitly included in the control information, and then the time domain resource may be derived from the TBS. For example, the second device 420 may transmit control information to schedule the D2R transmission. The control information includes the TBS. The time domain resource is implicitly indicated by the TBS. In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, the control information including the TBS for transmitting the message. The time domain resource may be determined based on the TBS and the repetition number N. Alternatively, the time domain resource may be based on the TBS, the repetition number N and CRC code bits.

[0121] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be based on the TBS, the repetition number N and the channel code rate. Assume that the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a channel code. For example, the first device 410 may use the TBS, the repetition number N and the channel code (e.g., the channel code rate is 1 / 3) to obtain the coded bit size 3N×TBS. Referring to FIG. 6, if the D2R information bits is first repeated N times and then coded using the channel code, the information bits may be converted to TBS×N and further be multiplied by the channel code rate, i.e., TBS×N ×3. If the D2R information bits is first coded using the channel code and then repeated N times, the information bits may be converted to TBS×3 and further be multiplied by N, i.e., TBS×3×N.

[0122] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be determined based on the TBS, the repetition number N, the CRC code bits and the channel code rate. Assume that the transmission scheme indicates that the message includes a CRC code and a channel code. For example, the first device 410 may add 6-bit or 16-bit CRC code based on the TBS. If the TBS is greater than a TBS threshold, 16-bit CRC code may be used. The first device 410 may use the TBS, the repetition number N, the convolutional code (e.g., the channel code rate is 1 / 3) and the 16-bit CRC code to obtain the coded bit size 3N× (TBS+CRC bits) .

[0123] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be determined based on the TBS, the repetition number N, the channel code rate and the line code rate. For example, the first device may use the TBS, the repetition number N, the convolutional code (e.g., the channel code rate is 1 / 3) , and the Manchester code (e.g., the line code rate is 1 / 2) to obtain the coded bit size 6N×TBS.

[0124] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be determined based on the TBS, the repetition number N, the CRC code bits, the channel code rate and the line code rate. For example, the first device may use the TBS, the repetition number N, the convolutional code (e.g., the channel code rate is 1 / 3) , the Manchester code (e.g., the line code rate is 1 / 2) and the CRC code to obtain the coded bit size 6N× (TBS+CRC bits) .

[0125] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be determined based on the TBS, the repetition number N, the CRC code bits, the channel code rate, the line code rate and a padding chip. The first device 410 may perform small frequency shift operation, and padding chips may be added for the purpose of alignment. For example, if an FDM indication is given, the first device 410 needs to pad chips to the same duration with the longest D2R transmission after small frequency shift.

[0126] Alternatively, the time domain resource may be determined at least based on the TBS, the repetition number N and the overhead chips of ambles. The time domain resource may further be determined based on at least one of: the CRC code bits, the channel code rate or the line code rate. For example, the first device 410 may determine the overhead chips of midamble based on Q, Q = 3N×TBS or 3N× (TBS+CRC bits) or 6N×TBS or 6 N× (TBS+CRC bits) , and add the overhead chips of preamble, postamble (if any) to obtain the time domain resource (duration) for the D2R transmission. For another example, the overhead chips of one midamble is pre-configured or pre-set, and the number of midambles (represented as R) is obtained by comparing Q with a threshold number of midambles (represented as Th) , i.e., Q ∈ (R×Th, (R+1) ×Th] , R midamble is added. By adding all (Q + Toverhead) , the time domain resource is determined, where Toverhead =Tpreamble + Tmidamble + Tpostamble or Toverhead can be obtained based on the overhead chips of midamble.

[0127] It should be noted that if the first device 410 receives the control information including the TBS, the time domain resource may be determined based on at least one of: the TBS, the repetition number N, the CRC code bits, the channel code rate, the line code rate, the overhead chips of ambles (e.g., preamble, midamble (if any) , postamble (if any) ) , or the padding chips. The above has merely described that the time domain resource may be determined based on combinations of the parts in the transmission scheme, which does not imply any limitations to the scope of the present disclosure.

[0128] In some examples, the descriptions with regard to time domain resource assignment may be summarized in Table 2 below. Table 2: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.212 for indication of FDM resources

[0129] In some examples, descriptions with regard to device operations may be summarized in Table 3 below. Table 3: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.214 for device operations

[0130] The above has described how to determine the time domain resource if different transmission schemes, including the ambles, the CRC code, the channel code, the line code, the repetition number or the TBS and the like, are considered. Some parts of the transmission scheme may be predetermined, and the other parts of the transmission scheme may be indicated. For example, the TBS for the first message or the third message is predetermined. The repetition number N is indicated. The ambles, the CRC code, the channel code and the line code may be determined based on the predetermined rules.

[0131] After determining the time domain resource, the message may be transmitted using all or part of the time domain resource determined. The following will describe the details with reference to specific embodiments.

[0132] As discussed above, the message (s) transmitted by the first device 410 may include a first message (s) responding to a trigger signal transmitted from the second device 420 to the one or more first devices 410, or the message (s) may include a third message (s) responding to a second message transmitted from the second device 420 to the one or more first devices 410.

[0133] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive the trigger signal from the second device 420. The trigger signal may indicate a first number (represented as X) of time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. In response to reception of the trigger signal indicating X time domain resource positions, X time domain resource positions are obtained from the trigger signal. At this point, the time domain resource is indicated explicitly.

[0134] Alternatively, the trigger signal may indicate the TBS. The TBS may be based on X time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. In response to the reception of the trigger signal indicating the TBS, X time domain resource positions are determined based on the TBS and a predetermined size occupied by a first message responding to the trigger signal. At this point, the time domain resource is indicated implicitly. For example, the indicated TBS is 96 bits. The predetermined size occupied by the first message is 16 bits, it means 96 / 16 = 6 time domain resource positions, i.e., X=6.

[0135] As an example, the second device 420 transmits the trigger signal to trigger the transmission of the first message (e.g., with 16-bit device identity of the first device 410) . Using the granularity described in the above embodiments, for example, 1 granularity is 8 bits, and 2 granularities are used for 16-bit device identity. Considering a convolutional code and a Manchester code, chips conveying information would be 96. If the first number of chip durations M = 4, 1 granularity is a group of 4 chips, and 96 / M=24, i.e., 24 granularities.

[0136] If X time domain resource positions are allocated, the indicated value would depend on X (X>1) . For example, X = 2 time domain resource positions, 1 granularity is 8 bits, and 4 granularities are used for 32-bit (two 16-bit device identities, i.e. X device identities) . When X=2, chips conveying information would be 2*96=192. If M=4, 1 granularity is a group of 4 chips, and 2*96 / M=48, i.e., 48 granularities.

[0137] Alternatively, the trigger signal may indicate a size of a time domain resource. The size of the time domain resource may be based on X resource positions in the time domain resource. In response to the reception of the trigger signal indicating the size of the time domain resource, X time domain resource positions are determined based on the size of the time domain resource and a number of chips occupied by the first message. For example, the size of the time domain resource for one first message may be predetermined, and the value X could be reflected in the trigger signal with the predetermined size of the time domain resource multiplied by X. When chips conveying information is 150 chips or 48 bits, the number of chips occupied by the first message is 50 chips or 16 bits, it means 150 / 50 = 3 or 48 / 16=3 time domain resource positions, i.e. X=3. At this point, the time domain resource is indicated implicitly.

[0138] In some example embodiments, if it is determined that a device identity indicated by the trigger signal is a predetermined device identity, the first device 410 may transmit, to the second device 420, the first message using a first time domain resource position among X time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. For example, the second device 420 may transmit a predetermined device identity, which is set for triggering the transmission of the first device 410. The first device 410 may receive the predetermined device identity and match the predetermined device identity to identify the trigger signal for the first message. The first device 410 may receive the explicitly or implicitly indicated time domain resource for the transmission of the first message. Then, the first device 410 may transmit the first message on the indicated time domain resource.

[0139] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may transmit the first message on the first time domain resource position in the time domain resource, and the first time domain resource position may be randomly selected from X time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. Multiple first devices 410 may transmit multiple first messages on multiple time domain resource positions in the time domain resource, and the second device 420 may receive the first messages. Then, the second device 420 may transmit the second message to schedule one or more first devices to transmit the third message (s) .

[0140] In some example embodiments, the first device 410 may receive the second message from the second device, and the second message may indicate a second number (represented as Y) of time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. The second device 420 may fill a predetermined device identity in the second message for the third message. In response to the reception of the second message indicating Y time domain resource positions in the time domain resource, Y time domain resource positions may be indicated by the second message. At this point, the time domain resource is indicated explicitly.

[0141] Alternatively, the second message may indicate a TBS, and the TBS may be based on Y time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. In response to the reception of the second message indicating the TBS, Y time domain resource positions may be determined based on the TBS and a predetermined size occupied by the third message responding to the second message. For example, the indicated TBS is 96 bits. The predetermined size occupied by the third message is 48 bits, and it means 96 / 48 = 2 time domain resource positions.

[0142] Alternatively, the second message may indicate a size of a time domain resource, and the size of the time domain resource may be based on Y time domain resource positions in the time domain resource. In response to the reception of the second message indicating the size of the time domain resource, Y time domain resource positions may be determined based on the size of the time domain resource and a number of chips occupied by the third message. For example, the size of the time domain resource for one third message may be predetermined, and the value Y could be reflected in the second message with the predetermined size of the time domain resource multiplied by Y. When chips conveying information is 300 chips. The number of chips occupied by the third message is 100 chips, and it means 300 / 100 = 3 time domain resource positions, i.e., Y=3. Y may be equal to X. At this point, the time domain resource is indicated implicitly.

[0143] In some example embodiments, if it is determined that a device identity of the first device 410 matches a device identity of a plurality of device identities indicated by the second message, the first device 410 may transmit, to the second device 420, the third message using a second time domain resource position among Y time domain resource positions in the time domain resource.

[0144] In some example embodiments, the second time domain resource position may be determined from Y time domain resource positions based on an order of the plurality of device identities indicated by the second message. For example, the MAC payload only contains the plurality of device identities in order, and the order means that those first devices 110 are allocated with resources in an order from high frequency to low frequency, or in an order from low frequency to high frequency, or in an order from early to late time resource positions, or in an order from late to early time resource positions. The first device 410 may use the order to determine the allocated time domain resource positions or frequency domain resources for the third message. The frequency domain resources are the maximum size of all frequency resources. For example, within two time domain resource positions and 6 frequency domain resources, with the first indicated device identity at the 7th order, the first device 410 may use the second time domain resource and the first frequency domain resource in the indicated resources. If more than one domain resource, the usage of order would be frequency domain resource first and then time domain resource. Alternatively, the usage of order would be time domain resource first and then frequency domain resource.

[0145] Alternatively, the second time domain resource position may be determined based on the first time domain resource position. For example, the second time domain resource position may be determined from Y time domain resource positions based on the plurality of device identities indicated by the second message. As an example, the MAC payload only contains the plurality of device identities, and the first device 410 is expected to use the same frequency domain resource for the third message as the frequency domain resource for the first message. Also, the first device 410 may use the same time domain resource position for the third message as the time domain resource position for the first message. That is, the order of the time domain resource position for the third message is the same as the order of the time resource position for the first message. As another example, the MAC payload contains the plurality of device identities with respective time domain resource positions and / or respective frequency domain resources. The first device 410 may use the indicated time domain resource position and / or frequency domain resource to transmit the third message.

[0146] Alternatively, the second time domain resource position may be determined based on an indication of time domain resource position indicated by the second message. At this point, this example would introduce a large overhead for decoding, but it can be more flexible.

[0147] In some examples, if only one first device 410 transmits the first message and the second device 420 receives this first message successfully, the second message may be transmitted for single-device scheduling. Such a case may be referred to as fallback case. The second message has the device identity of the first device 410. Since the first device 410 has transmitted the first message before, it would know the scheduling is for the transmission of the third message. In such a case, the first device 410 may use the indicated time domain resource positions or frequency domain resource in the second message. Alternatively, the MAC payload may still contain the same device identity or the indication of time domain resource position.

[0148] Furthermore, the first message (e.g., Msg1) and the third message (e.g., Msg3) may include various number of chips, as shown in Table 4 below. Table 4

[0149] In some examples, descriptions with regard to device identity, time domain resource assignment and frequency domain resource assignment may be summarized in Table 5 below. Table 5: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.212

[0150] In some examples, descriptions with regard to device identity and TBS may be summarized in Table 6 below. Table 6: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.214

[0151] In some examples, descriptions with regard to device identity and order of domain resources may be summarized in Table 7 below. Table 7: Possible Spec Editing on 3GPP TS 38.321

[0152] According to the embodiments described above, the overhead of the time domain resource indication in the control information can be saved.

[0153] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 700 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the first device 410 in FIG. 4.

[0154] At block 710, the first device 410 obtains at least one of the following for transmitting a message to a second device: a granularity of a time domain resource, or a transmission scheme.

[0155] At block 720, the first device 410 determines the time domain resource based on at least one of the granularity or the transmission scheme.

[0156] At block 730, the first device 410 transmits, to the second device, the message using the time domain resource.

[0157] In some example embodiments, the granularity comprises one of the following parts: a chip duration, a modulated symbol, a first number of chip durations associated with an orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing, OFDM, symbol duration of the second device, a predetermined number of chip durations, or a second number of chip durations associated with a predetermined number of information bits in the message.

[0158] In some example embodiments, the time domain resource is determined based on a first granularity of the time domain resource for transmitting a number of first information bits in the message and a second granularity of the time domain resource for transmitting a number of second information bits in the message.

[0159] In some example embodiments, the transmission scheme comprises at least one of the following parts: a size of a transmission block for transmitting the message, an amble of the message, a cyclic redundancy check code of the message, a channel code of the message, a line code of the message, or a repetition number of information bits in the message.
