[0071] The examples and embodiments set forth below represent information to enable those skilled in the art to practice the present disclosure. Upon reading the following description in light of the accompanying drawing figures, those skilled in the art will understand the concepts of the description and will recognize applications of these concepts not particularly addressed herein. These concepts and applications fall within the scope of the description.

[0072] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth. However, it is understood that embodiments may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known circuits, structures, and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of the description. Those of ordinary skill in the art, with the included description, will be able to implement appropriate functionality without undue experimentation.

[0073] References in the specification to "one embodiment, " "an embodiment, " "an example embodiment, " etc., indicate that the embodiment described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but every embodiment may not necessarily include the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. When a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to implement such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0074] It is to be noted that the detailed description, at times, refers to one or more specifications being used as non-limiting and illustrative examples for certain architectures, network configurations and system deployments. More specifically, the detailed description refers to 3GPP standards, being used as non-limiting and illustrative examples. As such, the various embodiments provided herein can specifically employ terminology which is directly related thereto. Such terminology is only used in the context of the non-limiting and illustrative examples and is not intended to limit the various embodiments in any way. Rather, any other system configuration or deployment may be utilized while complying with what is described herein and / or various embodiments are applicable to it.

[0075] For example, various embodiments are applicable in any (e.g., mobile / wireless) communication system, such as a 5G / NR system and a next-generation system beyond 5G. For example, various embodiments are applicable in a 3GPP-standardized mobile / wireless communication system of Release 19 onwards.

[0076] Hereinafter, various embodiments are described using several variants and / or alternatives. It is generally to be noted that, according to certain implementations or constraints, all the described variants and / or alternatives may be provided alone or in any conceivable combination (e.g., also including combinations of individual features of these various variants and / or alternatives) .

[0077] The words "comprising" and "including" do not limit the embodiments to consist of only those features that have been mentioned, and embodiments may also contain, among other things, e.g., features, structures, units, modules, or the like, that have not been specifically mentioned.

[0078] The wording "at least one of the following: <a list of two or more elements>" , "at least one of <a list of two or more elements>" , or the like such as "one or more of" , where the list of two or more elements are joined by "and" or "or" , mean at least any one of the elements, or at least any two or more of the elements, or at least all the elements.

[0079] According to various embodiments, any operations of sending or receiving may comprise actual transmission or communication operations, i.e., transmitting or communicating associated messages or signals, but may additionally or alternatively comprise related processing operations, i.e., preparing / generating / issuing associated messages or signals before sending and / or obtaining / handling / processing of associated messages or signals after receiving. For example, sending a message at / by an entity may comprise generating / issuing and / or transmitting / communicating thereof or a corresponding signal in / at / by the entity, and receiving a message at / by an entity may comprise obtaining / handling and / or processing thereof or a corresponding signal in / at / by the entity. A message may refer to and / or encompass any kind of corresponding information, signal, or the like.

[0080] In the drawings, it is to be noted that lines / arrows interconnecting individual blocks or entities are generally meant to illustrate an operational coupling there-between, which may be a physical and / or logical coupling, which on the one hand is implementation-independent (e.g., wired, or wireless) and on the other hand may also comprise an arbitrary number of intermediary functional blocks or entities not shown. In flowcharts or sequence diagrams, the illustrated order of operations or actions is generally non-limiting and illustrative, and any other order of respective operations or actions is conceivable, if feasible.

[0081] Embodiments described may be implemented in a communication network, such as any of the following radio access technologies (RATs) : World-wide Interoperability for Micro-wave Access (WiMAX) , Global System for Mobile communications (GSM, 2G) , GSM EDGE radio access Network (GERAN) , General Packet Radio Service (GRPS) , Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS, 3G) based on basic wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced, and enhanced LTE (eLTE) , 5G (also called NR) , or any future RAT such as 6G. Moreover, communication within the communication network may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , and / or Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) .

[0093] A processor 210 may comprise circuitry, or be constituted as circuitry or circuitries, the circuitry or circuitries being configured to perform phases of methods in accordance with example embodiments described herein.

[0094] As used in this application, the term “circuitry” may refer to one or more or all of the following: (a) hardware-only circuit implementations, such as implementations in only analog and / or digital circuitry, and (b) combinations of hardware circuits and software, such as, as applicable: (i) a combination of analog and / or digital hard-ware circuit (s) with software / firmware and (ii) any portions of hardware processor (s) with software (including digital signal processor (s) ) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a user equipment, to perform various functions) and (c) hardware circuit (s) and or processor (s) , such as a microprocessor (s) or a portion of a microprocessor (s) , that re-quires software (e.g., firmware) for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. This definition of circuitry applies to all uses of this term in this application, including in any claims. As a further example, as used in this application, the term circuitry also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (or multiple processors) or portion of a hardware circuit or processor and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware. The term circuitry also covers, for example and if applicable to the particular claim element, a baseband integrated circuit or processor integrated circuit for a mobile device or a similar integrated circuit in server, a cellular network device, or other computing or network device.

[0097] For example, the apparatus 200 is a terminal device, such as the UE 120 / 122 described with reference to FIG. 1. As another example, the apparatus 200 is comprised in such a terminal device, e.g., as a chipset configured to control the terminal device. The apparatus 200 may be caused or configured to perform at least the method of FIG. 5 and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0098] As another example, the apparatus 200 is a network node such as the network node 110 / 112 described with reference to FIG. 1. In another embodiment, the apparatus 200 is comprised in such a network node, e.g., as a chipset configured to control the network node. The apparatus 200 may be caused or configured to perform at least the method of FIG. 5 and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0099] The apparatus 200 may comprise one or more entities of any of protocol layers, such as a MAC entity, an RRC entity, an RLC entity, a PDCP entity or a PHY entity. In some embodiments, the one or more entities is configured to perform the method of FIG. 5, and / or any one or more of the embodiments described.

[0100] The apparatus 200 comprises a radio interface 240. The radio interface 240 may provide the apparatus 200 with communication capabilities. The radio interface 240 may comprise a receiver configured to receive information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The radio interface 240 may comprise a transmitter configured to transmit information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The receiver may comprise more than one receiver. The transmitter may comprise more than one transmitter. The radio interface 240 may comprise a transceiver configured to receive and transmit information in accordance with at least one cellular or non-cellular standard. The transceiver may comprise more than one transceiver.

[0101] The apparatus 200 may comprise a user interface 250 comprising, for example, at least one of a keypad, a microphone, a touch display, a display, a speaker, etc. The user interface 250 may be used to control the apparatus by the user. The user interface 250 may be external to the apparatus 200. For example, the apparatus 200 may be connected to another device, such as a computer, either via wireless or wired connection, and the apparatus 200 is controlled by the user via the computer.

[0102] In an embodiment, at least some of the processes described herein may be carried out by an apparatus comprising means for carrying out at least some of the described processes. Means for performing method steps as disclosed herein may include software and / or hardware components of the apparatus 200. For example, the at least one processor 210, the memory 220, and the computer program code form means for carrying out the method or methods as disclosed herein, and any of the embodiments thereof.

[0103] As used herein the term “means” is to be construed in singular form, i.e. referring to a single element, or in plural form, i.e. referring to a combination of single elements. Therefore, terminology “means for [performing A, B, C] ” , is to be interpreted to cover an apparatus in which there is only one means for performing A, B and C, or where there are separate means for performing A, B and C, or partially or fully over-lapping means for performing A, B, C. Further, terminology “means for performing A, means for performing B, means for performing C” is to be interpreted to cover an apparatus in which there is only one means for performing A, B and C, or where there are separate means for performing A, B and C, or partially or fully overlapping means for performing A, B, C.

[0104] According to the 5G NR standards, the (mobile / wireless) communication system or network as shown in FIG. 1 may be coexisting with another (mobile / wireless) communication system or network. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, the another (mobile / wireless) communication system or network may comprise a non-terrestrial networks (NTN) system or network. In the NTN system, 5G base stations (gNBs) may be deployed on board of satellites and / or satellites may act as a kind of relay for ground-based gNBs to provide communication coverage over a very large area that may be otherwise unreachable by cellular networks. Such functionality can be used to connect Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices globally as well as provide personal communication in remote areas and in disaster relief.

[0105] As shown in FIG. 3, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) refers to at least one UE 120 / 122 or IoT device which is interfaced to a radio access node via a satellite 310 (also referred to herein as NTN node 310) via a service link 350. The NTN node 310 is interfaced to an NTN gateway 330 (also referred to as ground gNB 330) via a feeder link 320, and the NTN gateway 330 is interfaced to a core network node 116 for accessing a data network 340. A cell 100 / 102 of an NTN node 310 may be quite large. A cell may be composed of one or more beams 360, similar to what has been described above for the earth-bound wireless setup. The beam footprint size, i.e., size of the footprint of all beams 360 of the cell 100 / 102, thereby reflects the whole coverage area of the cell. The combination of the NTN node 310 and the NTN gateway 330 may be considered to be functionally equal to an earth-bound radio access node 110 / 112 as shown in FIG. 1. Particularly, the components described with respect to FIG. 2 can be equally present in NTN node 310 and / or NTN gateway 330.

[0106] From Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture, particularly in view of the protocols that need to be supported by the satellite, the satellite may operate according to the following scenarios: a transparent satellite payload scenario and a regenerative satellite payload scenario.

[0107] In the transparent satellite payload scenario, the satellite does not terminate NR-Uu, i.e., the satellite repeats the NR-Uu radio interface from the feeder link to the service link and vice versa. In this scenario, the satellite does not process any payload.

[0108] In the regenerative satellite payload scenario, the satellite is supporting all radio network layer protocols and therefore implements regeneration of the signals received from the NTN gateway (i.e., from earth) . In this scenario, the satellite is processing payloads such that the satellite can store and forward information and can establish communication to neighboring satellites via Inter Satellite Link (ISL) .

[0109] Before referring to FIG. 5 and describing the methods for counting SFN indices in a mobile communications system according to embodiments of the present disclosure, some background information and aspects related to the present disclosure will be provided.

[0110] For 3GPP Release 19, a Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode for an NTN system (e.g., the IoT NTN) is discussed.

[0111] The discussion aims to specify enhancements for NB-IoT NTN to enable NTN operation with a NB IoT TDD mode leveraging commonalities with half-duplex NB-IoT FDD NTN, by defining a NB-IoT TDD mode for NTN based on minimum changes to the NB-IoT NTN FDD frame structure and procedures for the NB-IoT operation in the targeted unpaired Mobile Switching Center Server (MSS) allocated band. The discussion is based on assumptions, including satellites with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of 600 km and 1200 km (as specified in 3GPP TR 36.763) , the 1616-1626.5 MHz MSS allocated band, standalone deployment with anchor and non-anchor carriers (i.e., operating in carrier (s) used only for NB-IoT) , and operate with Earth fixed Tracking area, with either Earth fixed cells or Earth moving cells for Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) . The NB-IoT NTN TDD mode is to allow configuring usage of radio resources in the targeted MSS allocated band with a periodic subset of the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) subframes in a number N of radio frames (e.g., N = 9) . The periodic pattern is to comprise non-overlapping set of usable contiguous UL subframes and set of usable contiguous DL subframes, and guard periods. The periodic pattern may be periodic every N radio frames (e.g., N = 9) . No blind detection is assumed at the UE. The value of N and the configuration of the periodic pattern are fixed per band.

[0112] The discussion focuses on, among others, an impact due to periodic pattern, at least on UE downlink synchronization, and the specification of the NB-IoT TDD NTN mode based on minimum necessary changes to the NB-IoT NTN FDD frame structure and procedures (e.g., definition, configuration and signaling of the periodic pattern including confirming the value of N, and associated UE procedures) .

[0113] The discussion focuses on the specification for IoT NTN in TDD mode, especially for Iridium satellite deployed band (i.e., the 1616-1626.5 MHz MSS allocated band) . The band is a TDD band, i.e., the carriers are unpaired. In this band, there is already one legacy system (also referred to as a second system) ongoing, while some resources can be utilized as IoT NTN resources.

[0114] IoT NTN is considered to only support FDD carrier but not support TDD carrier. The discussion is to specify the system on how to define IoT NTN in TDD mode while to reuse IoT NTN FDD processing. For the Iridium band (for example) , there is already TDD frame structure. An example of the frame structure is illustrated in FIG. 4.

[0115] As illustrated, the frame structure 400 has 90ms as period and comprises a SIMPLEX time slot 410 with a time duration of 20.32ms, four UL time durations UL1 to UL4 430-1 to 430-4, each with a time duration of 8.28ms, and four DL time durations DL1 to DL4 440-1 to 440-4, each with a time duration of 8.28ms. The frame structure may also include one or more guard periods 420.

[0116] According to the discussion, the IoT NTN in TDD mode is to be defined such that the IoT NTN system (e.g., Iridium) can take one UL duration (i.e., at least one UL duration) and one DL duration (i.e., at least one DL duration) for IoT NTN processing, while all the other resources (i.e., remaining UL / DL durations) can be utilized for the legacy system (i.e., the second system) which is unknown to the IoT NTN system (or network) .

[0117] The IoT NTN in TDD mode is considered to have the following constraints (e.g., for operation within the same band as the TDD frame structure of the legacy system in the 1.6 GHz MSS band) : At the satellite, all downlink NB-IoT channels / signals in a cell can only use one of the downlink slots in the TDD frame structure (e.g., DL1, DL2, DL3 or DL4) across 90ms periods. The same DL slot is used in all the 90ms periods. At the satellite, all uplink NB-IoT channels / signals in the cell can only use one of the uplink slots in the TDD frame structure (e.g., UL1, UL2, UL3 or UL4) across 90ms periods. The same uplink slot is used in all the 90ms periods. The one uplink slot and one downlink slot in the TDD frame structure have the same index (DL1 &UL1, DL2 &UL2, DL3 &UL3, or DL4 &UL4) .

[0118] As only one UL duration and one DL duration (in a pair) may be utilized for IoT NTN in TDD mode, the time resource that may be utilized for IoT NTN is about 8ms for UL and 8ms for DL in every 90ms period. In this case, there may be an issue for the SFN (System Frame Number) , where each SFN contains 10ms.

[0119] For example, in legacy 3GPP IoT NTN system, the SFN index is counted as 0, 1, …, 1022, 1023. After SFN index 1023, the SFN index turns back to 0. This SFN index counting can also be utilized in the calculation for time resource of periodic transmissions of Semi Persistent Scheduling (SPS) , the Discontinuous Reception (DRX) on duration timer, the preconfigured uplink resource, as well as the Paging Occasion.

[0120] As an example, as 1024 is not multiple of Iridium system period of 90ms, the legacy SFN (i.e., the SFN of the legacy system) processing does not work. Accordingly, there is need for handling mismatch between SFN counting and Iridium system, or some other NTN system, periodicity.

[0121] As described above, the discussion is focused on defining a relation of the SFN and the 90ms period of the Iridium frame structure. However, there is a need for specifying as to how to calculate the SFN or the like.

[0122] Aspects of the discussion may face the following issues, which need to be addressed:

[0123] The SFN cannot be utilized efficiently for bands with different period length of TDD frame structure, which may make the system complicated and also the UE may need to have complicated implementation for different bands. When changing the SFN to multiple of 90, then it can only be utilized to a band that have TDD pattern as 90ms. But for another band, there may be different length of TDD pattern. Then for each band, there should be different number of maximum SFN. This may make the system complicated and also the UE may need to have complicated implementation for different bands.

[0124] Also, periodic channel / signal falling into unavailable time resource in the frame structure (i.e., a time resource or at least part thereof not available for a system; also referred to as unavailable SFN) cannot be received, resulting in low efficiency of periodic channel / signal and utilization of the SFN. For example, when frame structure is with 90ms period and legacy SFN (i.e., the SFN of the legacy system) is utilized, some periodic channel / signal that fall into unavailable SFN cannot be received as they cannot be transmitted. These channel / signal have to be missed and it has to be waited for the next chance for transmission / reception. This will increase the latency of the channel / signal and reduce efficiency of the system. Many SFN may be not available but counted and never usable. Then in each round of the 1024 SFN, the number of usable SFN will be significantly, e.g., from 9 usable SFN to at most 4 usable SFN for Iridium carrier. The efficiency of the SFN utilization will be significantly reduced and the frequency of SFN index restart will be increased significantly, while actually it is not aligned with the available number of SFN.

[0125] The present disclosure and embodiments thereof aim at providing a technique for SFN index counting. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a method for SFN index counting is provided. The SFN index counting according to embodiments of the present disclosure (also referred to as virtual SFN index counting) involves that only SFN available for the UE in the system serving the UE will be counted. The SFN index counting is not based on absolute time with some of SFN not available for the system or the UE.

[0126] Now, methods for counting SFN indices according to embodiments of the present disclosure will be described. In some examples, the SFN index counting is performed for periods of a TDD frame structure.

[0127] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of a method 500 or process for communicating in a mobile communications system according to embodiments of the present disclosure. More specifically, FIG. 5 illustrates the flowchart of the method 500 or process for SFN index counting.

[0128] The method 500 or process may be performed in a wireless communications system. More specifically, the method 500 may be performed by a user equipment (UE) of the wireless communications system such as user device or terminal device, or by an apparatus for use in the UE. For example, the UE may be represented by any one of the UEs 120 and 122 of the wireless network as described above with reference to FIG. 1.

[0129] In some examples, the method 500 or the process may be performed in a mobile communications system (e.g., a 5G system) comprising an NTN system. The NTN may serve the UE. In some examples, the communications system may further comprise a second system coexisting with the NTN system. The second system may be any other communications system including a legacy system (e.g., 3GPP 4G / LTE communications system) .

[0130] Although the method 500 or the process is described as being performed by the UE of the wireless communications system, it is to be noted that the method 500 or the process may also be performed by a network node of the wireless communications system such as a base station or a master node, or by an apparatus for use in the network node. For example, the network node may be represented by any one of the base stations 110 and 112 of the wireless network as described above with reference to FIG. 1. That is, the method 500 or the process may be performed by a network node of the NTN system, serving the UE.

[0131] It is to be noted that examples of the method 500 or the process are not limited to the sequence of operations illustrated in FIG. 5. Unless explicitly stated differently, the operations may also be performed in any other sequence, even in parallel.

[0132] In some examples, the UE 120 / 122 is connected to, and served by, the mobile communications system. More specifically, the UE 120 / 122 is served by the NTN system. The UE 120 / 122 is located in an area (i.e., a cell 100) served by a base station (e.g., gNB 110) or a network node of the mobile communications system. More specifically, in some examples, the UE 120 / 122 is served by a base station or network node of the NTN system.

[0133] The method 500 starts at operation 510. In operation 510, the UE 120 / 122 determines a part of a (i.e., at least one) time resource in a (i.e., at least one) frame structure of a (i.e., at least one) carrier as available for the UE to perform transmission and / or reception. The time resource of the frame structure comprises the part which is available for the UE and one or more other parts which are unavailable (i.e., not available) for the UE to perform transmission and / reception. More specifically, the UE may determine the part of the time resource that is available for the UE to perform transmission and / or reception based on the frame structure. Examples of unavailable parts includes parts of the frame structure utilized by another system not serving the UE or guard periods.

[0134] In the NTN system, the frame structure may be a TDD frame structure. The TDD frame structure may correspond to the frame structure described with reference to FIG. 4.

[0135] In some examples, the time resource in the frame structure may be any one of: one or more frames, one or more subframes, one or more slots, one or more symbols, or one or more time durations. In these examples, the part of the time resource may corresponds to any one of: a part of the one or more frames in the frame structure, a part of the one or more subframes in the frame structure, a part of the one or more slots in the frame structure, a part of the one or more symbols in the frame structure, or a part of the one or more time durations in the frame structure. Examples of the part of the time resource comprise: at least one subframe, at least one slot, at least one symbol, or at least one time duration.

[0136] In the example of FIG. 4, the time resource in the frame structure may be 90ms (i.e., a frame or a time duration) . As explained with reference to FIG. 4, the frame structure comprises one or more parts (e.g., UL1 of 8.28ms and DL1 of 8.28ms) which are utilized by the NTN system and therefore available for the UE or the system for transmission and / or reception. One or more other parts (e.g., UL2 / UL3 / UL4 of 8.28ms and DL2 / DL3 / DL4 of 8.28ms) may be utilized by the second system (i.e., the legacy system) and therefore not available for the NTN system. The other parts of the frame structure are therefore also not available for the UE or the system for transmission and / or reception. In the example of FIG. 4, the one or more parts which are available for the UE correspond to the slots (or time durations) of 8.28ms such as UL1 and DL1.

[0137] That is, the frame structure may be configured or predefined within the NTN system (i.e., at the UE and at the network node) . As shown in FIG. 4, the frame structure may include, among others, a plurality of uplink (UL) parts and a plurality of downlink (DL) parts. Each of the UL / DL parts may have a (configured / predefined) time duration (e.g., 8.28ms as shown in FIG. 4) . Among the UL / DL parts, only some of the UL / DL parts may be available for the NTN system, while the other UL / DL parts may be utilized by the second system (e.g., the legacy system) . For example, only one DL part and only one UL part may be available for the NTN system (i.e., the pair of UL / DL parts shown in FIG. 4 as UL1 and DL1) . In operation 510, the UE 120 / 122 determines the UL / DL parts in the frame structure shown in FIG. 4 as available for the UE for transmission and / or reception.

[0138] In some examples, the UE may determine that the part of the time resource is available based on a (i.e., at least one) configuration for the carrier. The configuration may configure the frame structure as illustrated in FIG. 4 and / or indicate those parts of the frame structure which are utilized by the NTN system and thus available for the UE for transmission and / or reception. For example, the configuration may indicate slot UL1 and DL1 as being available for transmission and / or reception. In some examples, the configuration may comprise a predefined configuration, i.e., a configuration predefined at the UE. Additionally, or alternatively, the configuration may be a network configuration provided by the network (e.g., the network node of the NTN system) to the UE. The configuration may include configurations for one or more carriers. In case of a plurality of carriers, a part of the time resource in the frame structure of one or more (up to each) of the plurality of carriers may be determined. Similarly, in case the mobile communications system supports a plurality of time resources and / or a plurality of frame structures, the determination may be made for one or more (up to each) of the plurality of time resources and / or for one or more (up to each) of the plurality of frame structures.

[0139] Some examples for determining the part of the time resource in the frame structure will now be described. As already described, the part of the time resource may comprise at least one of: a (i.e., at least one) subframe, a (i.e., at least one) slot, a (i.e., at least one) symbol, or a (i.e., at least one) time duration.

[0140] In operation 510, the subframe (as the part of the time resource) may be determined based on one of: available downlink (DL) subframes in the frame structure, available uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) subframes in the frame structure, or a number of available consecutive subframes in the frame structure. In case the determination is based on the available DL subframes, the determination may be made based on these available DL subframes only. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine a DL subframe such as the subframe corresponding to DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure as being available in the NTN system and for the UE for transmission and / or reception. In other examples, the UE may determine subframes corresponding to UL1 and DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure.

[0141] In operation 510, the slot (as the part of the time resource) may be determined based on one of: available DL slots in the frame structure, available UL and DL slots in the frame structure, or a number of available consecutive slots in the frame structure. In case the determination is based on the available DL slots, the determination may be made based on these available DL slots only. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine a DL slot such as the slot corresponding to DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure as being available in the NTN system and for the UE for transmission and / or reception. In other examples, the UE may determine slots corresponding to UL1 and DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure.

[0142] In operation 510, the symbol (as the part of the time resource) may be determined based on one of: available DL symbols in the frame structure, available UL and DL symbols in the frame structure, or a number of available consecutive symbols in the frame structure. In case the determination is based on the available DL symbols, the determination may be made based on these available DL symbols only. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine a DL symbol such as a symbol corresponding to DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure as being available in the NTN system and for the UE for transmission and / or reception. In other examples, the UE may determine symbols corresponding to UL1 and DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure.

[0143] In operation 510, the time duration (as the part of the time resource) may be determined based on one of: available DL time durations in the frame structure, available UL and DL time durations in the frame structure, or a number of available consecutive time durations in the frame structure. In case the determination is based on the available DL time durations, the determination may be made based on these available DL time durations only. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine a DL time duration such as the time duration of 8.28ms corresponding to DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure as being available in the NTN system and for the UE for transmission and / or reception. In other examples, the UE may determine time durations corresponding to UL1 and DL1 of the 90ms in the frame structure.

[0144] In operation 520, the UE 120 / 122 determines a frame numbering index based on the part of the time resource determined in operation 510 to be available. In some examples, the frame numbering index may comprise (or may be) a System Frame Number (SFN) as described above. The SFN may comprise a SFN of any one of: a subframe, a slot, a symbol, or a time duration in the frame structure. That is, in some examples, a frame numbering index that is determined in operation 520 comprises the SFN of the part of the time resource (e.g., the slot or the time duration such as UL1 and UL2) in the frame structure (e.g., the frame structure shown in FIG. 4) .

[0145] In some examples, the frame numbering index determined in operation 520 may also comprise a frame numbering index within a plurality of frames of the frame structure. For example, the determined frame numbering index may comprise a frame numbering index (e.g., SFN) from a first frame and another frame numbering index (e.g., SFN) from a second frame, which may be subsequent to the first frame in the frame structure.

[0146] In some examples, in case of a plurality of carriers, the frame number index is determined in operation 520 for each carrier among the plurality of carriers. That is, the determination in operation 520 is made for each carrier separately, resulting in a separate (i.e., individual) frame number index for each carrier of the plurality of carriers. In such examples, the frame number index determined in operation 520 may be different among at least some of the plurality of carriers.

[0147] Some examples for determining the frame numbering index based on the part of the time resource determined in operation 510 to be available will now be described. As already described, the determined part of the time resource may comprise at least one of: a (i.e., at least one) subframe, a (i.e., at least one) slot, a (i.e., at least one) symbol, or a (i.e., at least one) time duration.

[0148] As described above, in operation 510, the subframe may be determined based on DL subframes in the frame structure (e.g., only) . In operation 520, the frame numbering index is determined based on the subframe, i.e., based on the DL subframes. In this example, the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5 may further comprise determining a frame numbering index for UL subframes (i.e., at least one UL subframe) in the frame structure based on the frame numbering index of the DL subframes. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine the frame numbering index for the UL subframe corresponding to e.g. UL1 based on the frame numbering index for the DL subframe corresponding to e.g. DL1. As described above, in the frame structure of FIG. 4, the UL and DL form pairs of uplink and downlink resources (e.g., the pairs UL1 / DL1, UL2 / DL2, UL3 / DL3, UL4 / DL4) .

[0149] As described above, in operation 510, the slot may be determined based on DL slots in the frame structure (e.g., DL slots available in DL1 only) . In operation 520, the frame numbering index is determined based on the slot, i.e., based on the DL slots. In this example, the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5 may further comprise determining a frame numbering index for UL slots (i.e., at least one UL slot) in the frame structure based on the frame numbering index of the DL slots. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine the frame numbering index for the UL slot corresponding to e.g. UL1 based on the frame numbering index for the DL slot corresponding to e.g. DL1. As described above, in the frame structure of FIG. 4, the UL and DL form pairs of uplink and downlink resources (e.g., the pairs UL1 / DL1, UL2 / DL2, UL3 / DL3, UL4 / DL4) .

[0150] As described above, in operation 510, the symbol may be determined based on DL symbols in the frame structure (e.g., DL symbols available in DL1 only) . In operation 520, the frame numbering index is determined based on the symbol, i.e., based on the DL symbols. In this example, the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5 may further comprise determining a frame numbering index for UL symbols (i.e., at least one UL symbol) in the frame structure based on the frame numbering index of the DL symbols. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine the frame numbering index for the UL symbol of e.g. UL1 based on the frame numbering index for the DL symbol of e.g. DL1. As described above, in the frame structure of FIG. 4, the UL and DL form pairs of uplink and downlink resources (e.g., the pairs UL1 / DL1, UL2 / DL2, UL3 / DL3, UL4 / DL4) .

[0151] As described above, in operation 510, the time duration may be determined based on DL time durations in the frame structure (e.g., DL time duration available in DL1 only) . In operation 520, the frame numbering index is determined based on the time duration, i.e., based on the DL time durations. In this example, the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5 may further comprise determining a frame numbering index for UL time durations (i.e., at least one UL time duration) in the frame structure based on the frame numbering index of the DL time durations. In the exemplary frame structure of FIG. 4, the UE may determine the frame numbering index for the UL time duration such as the 8.28ms of UL1 based on the frame numbering index for the DL time duration such as the 8.28ms of DL1. As described above, in the frame structure of FIG. 4, the UL and DL form pairs of uplink and downlink resources (e.g., the pairs UL1 / DL1, UL2 / DL2, UL3 / DL3, UL4 / DL4) .

[0152] In some examples, the UE may also read the frame numbering index (i.e., the virtual SFN) in system information (SI) .

[0153] In operation 530, the UE 120 / 122 determines a (i.e., at least one) timing based on the frame numbering index determined in operation 520. The timing determined in operation 530 is for use in performing transmission and / or reception. That is, in some examples, the UE may determine one timing based on the frame numbering index (such as a timing that corresponds to the slots UL1 and DL1 in the frame structure shown in FIG. 4) and uses that timing for both transmission and reception. In other examples, the UE may determine a timing to perform transmission (i.e., a transmission timing) and a timing to perform reception (i.e., a reception timing) . For example, the UE may determine a transmission timing, i.e., a timing to be used to perform transmission, that corresponds to slot UL1 of the frame structure shown in FIG. 4, and a reception timing, i.e., a timing to be used to perform reception, that corresponds to slot DL1 of the frame structure shown in FIG. 4.

[0154] Based on the timing determined in operation 530, the UE performs transmission and / or reception according to the timing in operation 540. Herein, transmission and / or reception at the UE is to be understood as transmitting / receiving any type of information (e.g., control information or data) to / from the network (e.g., the network node) as well as monitoring (e.g., the UE may monitor for paging in a certain occasion, but the network is not necessarily sending anything) . In some examples, in operation 540, the UE may perform a transmission of data or control information to the network according to the transmission timing (or the timing) determined in operation 530. In operation 540, the UE may also perform a reception of data or control information from the network or perform monitoring according to the reception timing (or the timing) determined in operation 530. As described above, based on the transmission / reception timing determined in operation 530, the transmission / reception is aligned with and falls into the SFN available for the UE (or the system) .

[0155] In some examples, the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5 may further include an operation of modifying one or more parameters based on the frame numbering index determined in operation 520. The one or more parameters may comprise parameters utilized in performing the transmission and / or reception. That is, the transmission and / or reception is to be performed in operation 540 in accordance with the modified parameters. The modifying may comprise one or more of scaling, updating, replacing or changing. That is, in some examples, a value of a parameter may be scaled up or scaled down to modify the parameter. In other examples, the value of the parameter may be replaced by, or changed to, a different parameter. Also, the value of the parameter may be updated, e.g., using an offset for the value, to modify the parameter.

[0156] In some examples, the one or more parameters that may need to be modified may comprise a periodicity of transmission and / or reception. Examples of the periodicity comprise a periodicity of Master Information Block (MIB) , a periodicity of a System Information Block (SIB) , a periodicity of a Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS) , a periodicity of Preconfigured Uplink Resources (PUR) , a periodicity of RO, a periodicity of Random Access Response (RAR) , or the like. In such examples, the Master Information Block (MIB) or the System Information Block (SIB) may also include information or indication to indicate the available part of the time resource in the frame structure, the frame numbering index and / or the timing, determined by the network node performing operations of the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5 and signaled to the UE.

[0157] As already described above, the embodiments according to the present disclosure may be implemented in a NR system having a first system (e.g., an NTN system) . The embodiments according to the present disclosure may be implemented in a NR system having a first system (e.g., an NTN system) coexisting with a second system (e.g., a legacy system) , wherein the second system is not used for serving the UE (for example) . An example of such a NR system may include an IoT NTN system.

[0158] That is, embodiments according to the present disclosure provide a method of counting System Frame Number (SFN) indices. The SFN index counting according to the present disclosure (also be referred to as virtual SFN index counting) concerns counting only SFN that are available in the system (e.g., the NTN system) . Accordingly, the SFN index counting according to the present disclosure is not based on absolute time with some of SFN not available for the system. That is, the SFN index is not increased by one after a time duration of e.g. 10ms. Insofar, the SFN index counting according to the present disclosure is not based on those parts of the frame structure that is not available for the system that serves the UE (e.g., the NTN system) but e.g. utilized by a second system (e.g., a legacy system) coexisting with the system but not serving the UE.

[0159] The embodiments of the present disclosure provide a simple and uniform technique, reducing complexity for both UE and network (i.e., the system) . The technique may be workable for all carriers with different frame structures (e.g., legacy frame structures) . The embodiments of the present disclosure also allow to increase the efficiency of periodic channel / signal in the carrier with non-5G frame structure and reduce the latency of these periodic channel / signal, increasing the system efficiency.

[0160] Referring again to FIG. 5, illustrating the method 500 or the process according to embodiments of the present disclosure, some specific examples will be described.

[0161] According to the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5, the UE determines whether an SFN in the frame structure of a carrier is available or not. For example, the UE determines available time resource (i.e., a time resource or at least part thereof available for a system; also referred to as available SFN) in the frame structure of the carrier based on a configured or predefined frame structure of that carrier. An example of the configured or predefined frame structure is illustrated in FIG. 4. In some examples, the UE may determine different available SFN in the frame structure of different carrier.

[0162] For example, in the TDD band where the NTN system coexists with the second system (e.g., Iridium satellite system in Iridium’s operation band, not for 3GPP NTN) that is not serving for the UE, the UE may determine the available UL and DL subframes based on the frame structure of the carrier. The frame structure may have a period or length (e.g., 90ms in the frame structure of FIG. 4) . The UE may determine the available UL and DL subframes for each period of the frame structure. Based on the determined available UL and DL subframes, the UE may determine the available SFN for the UE. That is, the UE considers only the SFN that contains at least one UL or DL subframe (s) as available SFN. In other examples, the UE may only check available DL subframes when counting the SFN. The UE may apply the SFN counted for the DL for determining the SFN for UL subframe. In some other examples, the UE may check both the DL and UL available subframes when counting the SFN.

[0163] Further, according to the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5, the UE may count the SFN index (i.e., the frame numbering index) based on the available SFN instead of the absolute time. For each carrier, the UE may count the SFN index separately based on the available SFN of that carrier.

[0164] For example, the UE may calculate the SFN index (also referred to herein as a virtual SFN index) based on the available SFN for the system that serves the UE (e.g., the NTN system) . As one example, in the Iridium band, the frame structure shown in FIG. 4 may be utilized, where only one pair of UL1 / DL1, UL2 / DL2, UL3 / DL3, UL4 / DL4 is utilized for IoT NTN in the TDD mode. In the 90ms period of the frame structure, there are 8 subframes for UL and 8 subframes for DL for the IoT NTN system operating in the TDD mode. The 8 (DL or UL) subframes may cover two SFNs, e.g., the 8ms are as subframe [9 0 1 2 3 4 5 6] (across two consecutive radio frames) or [3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0] (across two consecutive radio frames) , or the like. In case UL1 / DL1 is utilized by one cell, UL1 may include subframes in two SFNs and DL1 may include subframes in two other SFNs. As a result, in one 90ms period of the frame structure of FIG. 4, 2+2=4 SFN index may be counted. For example, SFN index x (the start SFN index in the 90ms) , SFN index x+1, SFN index x+2, SFN index x+3. In such examples, the absolute time distance between SFN index x+1 and SFN index x+2 may be more than one radio frame and thus different from the operation in legacy systems) .

[0165] In some of these examples, the UE may further determine which parameters and / or and network settings are to be modified based on the change in the SFN index counting. For example, the UE may select parameters that need to be updated (e.g., scaled down, replaced, or change of unit) based on the change in the SFN index counting for each period of the frame structure. More specifically, the UE may check which parameters and / or network settings may need to be modified from original values based on the change in the SFN index counting.

[0166] For example, System Information Blocks (SIBs) may be transmitted with a configured periodicity of 64 (or 128, 256, 512…) radio frames. According to the SFN index count not changed in accordance with the embodiments of the present disclosure, the configured periodicity corresponds to a periodicity of 640ms. According to embodiments of the present disclosure, 64 radio frames may yield to a period of 2.88 seconds (if only DL frames are counted) or 1.44 seconds (if both DL and UL subframes are counted) . To avoid unnecessary long periods in scenarios where the network wants to leverage a smaller period, the parameter might be scaled down by a factor of 8 or 16 (for example) . In some other examples, the configuration may be re-written to indicate when the technique according to embodiments of the present disclosure is to be used such that parameters may change their units from milliseconds to subframes (for example) . This may apply to at least some of the parameters such as, for example, Koffset and Kmac.

[0167] According to the method 500 or the process of FIG. 5, the UE may calculate (i.e., determine) the transmission time and / or reception time based on the determined SFN index. For a plurality of channels / signals, the transmission timing and / or the reception timing may be calculated based on the determined SFN index. That is, the UE may calculate the transmission timing and / or the reception timing based on the determined SFN index, i.e., only based on the available SFN for the system that serve the UE.

[0168] As one example (e.g., for NPBCH) , the frame that contain NPBCH may be in radio frames fulfilling nfmod64=0, where nf is the nf of the determined SFN index. Based on a selection of the DL slot, the NPBCH may always exist in every nfmod64=0, but does not fall into any SFN that will not be available for the IoT NTN system but for Iridium legacy system or for any gap.

[0169] As one another example (e.g., for SIB1) , the System Information Block Type1-NB (SIB1-NB) uses a fixed schedule with a periodicity of 2560ms. In this case, the UE may determine the period of SIB1-NB based on the determined SFN index (i.e., the virtual SFN index) , i.e., the SFN available for the system to serve the UE. In this case, based on an option of the subframe index of the DLx, every or a large ratio SIB-NB can be transmitted, instead of many SIB-NB that fall into SFN not available for the IoT NTN system.

[0170] For the SPS transmission, paging occasion, Random Access Channel (RACH) occasion, Random Access Response (RAR) , and for all other periodic transmission, the virtual SFN index according to the present disclosure may be utilized for the calculation of the transmission timing and / or the reception timing. Many period transmissions / receptions will therefore not fall into time that is not for the system serving the UE, but fall into SFN that is for the system, thereby improving the efficiency of the periodic transmission / reception. In such examples, the UE may apply the virtual SFN index in equations where the current 3GPP standard specification defines the UE is to use the legacy SFN index (i.e., the SFN index of the legacy system) .

[0171] In some examples, the UE may also be able to read the virtual SFN index by receiving the MIB on the NPBCH (available in at least one of the DL occasions) . That is, the network shall also count the virtual SFN index and update the MIB accordingly (i.e., the network node performs the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5) .

[0172] In some examples, the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5 may count the virtual SFN index for available DL resource only. In such an example, the virtual SFN index used for UL resource is same as the virtual SFN index counted for DL resource. Additionally, or alternative, the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5 may count the virtual SFN index based available DL subframes and available UL subframes, but unavailable subframes are not counted for the SFN. In an example, the number of the available subframes may be counted, wherein 10 available subframes may construct an SFN. Additionally, or alternative, the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5 may count the virtual SFN index based on available DL subframes only. Additionally, or alternative, the method 500 or the process shown in FIG. 5 may count the virtual SFN index based on number of consecutive available subframes. That is, if a number of consecutive available subframes is less than 10, then one SFN may be counted, and N = ceiling (number consecutive available subframes  / 10) may be counted for each consecutive available subframe duration.

[0173] It is to be noted that the technique according to embodiments of the present disclosure may work in all carriers that have resources occupied by a (second) system that is not used for serving the UE.

[0174] An apparatus according to an example of the present disclosure may represent or realize / embody a (e.g., part of a) a user equipment (UE) as an example of a terminal device, wireless device, or entity. Other examples of the apparatus may represent or realize / embody a (e.g., part of a) network entity (such as any kind of base station or the like) as an example of a network node, a network device or a network entity. Such apparatus may be illustrated or realized as is shown in FIG. 2.

[0175] Such apparatus may also be illustrated or realized as is shown in FIG. 6 (i.e., the apparatus 600 shown in FIG. 6 in a configuration) . The apparatus 600 may comprise (at least) one or more unit / means / circuitry, denoted by processing section 610, which represent any implementation for (or configured to) determining a part of a time resource in at least one frame structure of at least one carrier as available for an apparatus of the mobile communications system to perform at least one of: transmission or reception, wherein the at least one frame structure comprises the part of the time resource which is available and another part of the time resource which is unavailable. The processing section 610, or (at least) one or more other unit / means / circuitry, may also be for (or configured to) determining, based on the available part of the time resource, at least one frame numbering index, and / or determining at least one timing based on the at least one frame numbering index. The apparatus 600 may further comprise (at least) one or more unit / means / circuitry, denoted by receiving section 620 and transmitting section 630, which represent any implementation for (or configured to) performing the at least one of: transmission according to the at least timing, or reception according to the at least timing. In some examples, the receiving section 620 and the transmitting section 630 may also be implemented as a transceiving section (not shown) for (or configured to) performing the reception according to the at least timing and / or the transmission according to the at least timing.
