[0032] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.

[0033] Ambient IoT is a new IoT technology to open new markets within 3GPP systems, whose number of connections and / or device density can be orders of magnitude higher than existing 3GPP IoT technologies, and which can provide complexity and power consumption orders-of-magnitude lower than existing 3GPP LPWA technologies such as narrow band (NB) -IoT and LTE-machine type communication (MTC) . An ambient IoT device may monitor R2D transmission in DL spectrum and transmit / backscatter D2R transmission in UL spectrum. The ambient IoT device is half duplex that it could not transmit and receive simultaneously in time.

[0034] For reader to device (R2D) , the only physical channel is PRDCH, which carries any higher-layer payload (including system information, if defined) , and L1 R2D control information, if defined. For R2D, time-domain multiplexing is the baseline. For R2D reception, the following information potentially can be explicitly / implicitly indicated to the device via the corresponding physical reader device channel (PRDCH) : -ID associated with device (s) intended for the reception of R2D, potentially including all devices (if supported) . For each information, it is for further study whether higher-layer signalling and / or L1 R2D control signalling is used. For transmission of R2D control information for R2D reception and D2R scheduling, following two options are studied: -Option 1: L1-control signaling; -Option 2: Higher-layer signaling.

[0035] For device to reader (D2R) , a physical channel PDRCH carries any higher-layer payload, the response transmitted from device to reader during the contention-based access procedure, and L1 D2R control information, if defined. Time-domain multiple access, and frequency domain multiple access at least by using a small frequency shift in baseband are studied. For device 2b, FDMA in D2R can be achieved by direct modulation of its internally generated carrier wave at the desired frequency.

[0036] Ambient IoT (A-IoT) processing time aspects are studied in terms of the following timing relationships: TR2D_min: Minimum time between a R2D transmission and the corresponding D2R transmission following it; TD2R_min: Minimum time between a D2R transmission and the corresponding R2D transmission following it; TD2R_max: Maximum time between the D2R transmission and the corresponding R2D transmission following it, so that the R2D transmission timing is expected to be within [TD2R_min, TD2R_max] , when a R2D transmission in response to a D2R transmission is expected for A-IoT message 2 (Msg2) response to A-IoT message 1 (Msg1) for the A-IoT device. See clause 6.3 for message descriptions; TR2D_R2D_min: Minimum time between two different consecutive R2D transmissions to the same A-IoT device; TD2R_D2R_min: Minimum time between two different consecutive D2R transmissions from the same A-IoT device.

[0037] For the time interval between a R2D transmission and the corresponding D2R transmission following it, there are two options studied: Option 1: Define a maximum time TR2D_max between a R2D transmission and the corresponding D2R transmission following it, so that the device transmits D2R transmission within [TR2D_min, TR2D_max] ; Option 2: The corresponding D2R transmission timing TR2D following a R2D transmission is determined based on the control information in the R2D transmission, where TR2D ≥ TR2D_min.

[0038] From the perspective of the physical layer, at least when a response is expected from multiple devices that are intended to be identified, an A-IoT contention-based access procedure initiated by the reader is used, for which at least slotted-ALOHA based access and FDMA, are studied. The study of FDMA includes how the frequency domain resources for Msg1 are allocated, and how a device determines that frequency-domain resource allocation. The response transmitted from the device to the reader during this procedure is transmitted on PDRCH.

[0039] A R2D transmission triggering random access determines X time domain resource (s) for D2R transmission (s) for Msg1, where each D2R transmission for Msg1 occurs in one time domain resource of the X time domain resource (s) . For Msg2 transmission in response to multiple Msg1 transmissions initiated by a R2D transmission triggering random access, the following options have been identified: Option 1: A PRDCH for Msg2 transmission corresponds to an A-IoT Msg1 received from one device; Option a: the starting time for Msg2 monitoring is separate for each Msg1 resource; Option b: the starting time for Msg2 monitoring is common for multiple Msg1 resources; Option 2: A PRDCH for Msg2 transmission corresponds to multiple A-IoT Msg1 received from different devices, the starting time for Msg2 monitoring is common for multiple Msg1 resources.

[0040] To determine the time duration for monitoring Msg2 in response to multiple Msg1 transmissions initiated by a R2D transmission triggering random access, the following options have been identified: Option 1: Predefined; Option 2: Indicated in the R2D transmission triggering random access. For a device to determine the reference time for the starting time for monitoring Msg2 in response to multiple Msg1 transmissions initiated by a R2D transmission triggering random access, the following options have been identified: Option 1: End of time domain resource where the device transmitted the Msg1; Option 2: End of the last of X time domain resource (s) determined for Msg1 transmission (s) ; Option 3: End of the R2D transmission triggering random access; Option 4: End of a R2D transmission carrying Msg2. It is noted that the reference time is used to determine the starting time for Msg2 monitoring, it does not mean that the starting time always equals the reference time. For Msg3 from multiple devices in response to a given set of one or multiple Msg2 transmission (s) during access procedure, FDMA and / or TDMA of D2R transmissions are studied, including how the frequency and time domain resources for Msg3 are allocated.

[0041] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0042] FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B illustrate schematic diagrams of example communication environments in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented, respectively. As shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, a plurality of communication devices, including a device 110 and a device 120, can communicate with each other. In the example of FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B, the device 110 may be an ambient IoT device / ambient IoT tag and the device 120 may be a base station serving a device 130 which is a UE.

[0043] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure. Although not shown, it would be appreciated that one or more additional devices may be located in the cell, and one or more additional cells may be deployed in the communication environment. It is noted that although illustrated as a network device, the device 120 may be another device than a network device. Although illustrated as a terminal device, the device 130 may be another device than a terminal device.

[0044] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the device 130 operating as a UE and the device 120 operating as a base station. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0045] In some example embodiments, if the device 130 is a terminal device and the device 120 is a network device, a link from the device 120 to the device 130 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the device 130 to the device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the device 130 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the device 130 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0046] The communications in the communication environments shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0047] FIG. 1A shows a first topology 100 where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) directly and bidirectionally communicates with the device 120. The communication between the device 120 and the device 110 may include ambient IoT data and / or signalling. This first topology 100 may include the possibility that the device 120 transmitting to the device 110 is a different from the device 120 receiving from the device 110. For example, the first topology 100 may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be indoors.

[0048] FIG. 1B shows a second topology 100’ where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node (i.e., the device 130) between the device 110 and the device 120. In the second topology 100’, the intermediate node may be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, and the like. which is capable of Ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer Ambient IoT data and / or signalling between the device 110 and the device 120. For example, the second topology 100’ may be deployed in a scenario where the device 110 (i.e., ambient IoT device) and the device 120 may be outdoor.

[0049] In some embodiments, an air interface design with minimized differences (where necessary) for ambient IoT may enable the following devices: (1) Device 1 ~1 μW peak power consumption, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, neither DL nor UL amplification in the device, the device’s UL transmission is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally; and (2) Device 2a and Device 2b ≤ a few hundred μW peak power consumption1, has energy storage, initial sampling frequency offset (SFO) up to 10X ppm, both DL and / or UL amplification in the device. The UL transmission of Device 2a may be backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. The UL transmission of Device 2b may be generated internally by the device. It is to be understood that “≤ a few hundred μW” means WGs are not tasked with setting a particular value, and that it will be for WG discussions to determine if a presented design with corresponding power consumption satisfies the “≤ a few hundred μW” requirement.

[0050] In some embodiments, there may be different types of ambient IoT devices, including: a first type of device (i.e., Device A) which has no energy storage and no independent signal generation / amplification, i.e. backscattering transmission, a second type of device (i.e., Device B) which has energy storage but no independent signal generation, i.e. backscattering transmission, and a third type of device (i.e., Device C) which has energy storage and independent signal generation, i.e., active RF components for transmission. For the second type of device, use of stored energy can include amplification for reflected signals. The device 110 may be any of the first, second or third types of devices.

[0051] A limited energy storage can be different among implementations within Device B or implementations within Device C, and different between Device B and Device C. Such storage is expected to be order (s) of magnitude smaller than an NB-IoT device would typically include. For Device A, the power consumption target during transmitting / receiving is ≤ 1 μW or ≤ 10 μW. For Device B, the target during transmitting / receiving is such that: Device A power consumption << Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption; or Device A power consumption ≤ Device B power consumption < Device C power consumption. The device power consumption during transmitting / receiving for Device C is ≤ 1 mW to ≤ 10 mW. For Device A, the complexity target is to be comparable to UHF RFID ISO18000-6C (EPC C1G2) . For Device B, the target is such that: Device A complexity < Device B complexity < Device C complexity. For Device C, the complexity target is to be orders-of-magnitude lower than NB-IoT.

[0052] In some embodiments, the ambient device is assumed to have two states: ON, OFF. In some other embodiments, the ambient device is assumed to have three states: ON, OFF, SLEEP.

[0053] In some embodiments, it can identity function (s) of the device that can be assumed supported and assumed not supported in each of the above device states, subject to: ON state supports at least: transmission, reception for communication; OFF state does not support at least: transmission, reception for communication, running a clock; OFF state supports at least: energy harvesting; SLEEP state supports at least: maintaining a memory content from ON state, running a clock or maintaining a timer, energy harvesting; and SLEEP state does not support at least: transmission, reception for communication.

[0054] Reference is made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of monitoring a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 200 involves the first device 210 and the second device 220. The first device 210 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 220 may be a reader.

[0055] The first device 210 determines (2010) whether a condition for transferring from one of a first monitoring state and a second monitoring state to another of the first monitoring state and the second monitoring state is satisfied. Examples of the condition are described later.

[0056] If the condition is satisfied, the first device 210 monitors (2020) reader to device information based on the other of the first monitoring state and the second monitoring state. In some example embodiments, if the first device 210 is in the first monitoring state, the first device 210 may monitor a first set of reader to device information. For example, the first device 210 monitors a first set of PRDCH which contains a first set of R2D information in the first monitoring state. In some embodiments, the second device 220 may transmit (2030) third reader to device information to the first device 210. The third reader to device information may belong to the first set of reader to device information. In this case, based on the reception of the third reader to device information, the first device 210 may determine that a first condition for transferring from the first monitoring state to the second monitoring state is satisfied. The first device 210 may then monitor a second set of reader to device information in the second monitoring state. For example, the first device 210 may monitor a second set of PRDCH which contains a second set of R2D information in a second monitoring state.

[0057] In some embodiments, if the first device 210 is in the second monitoring state, the first device 210 may monitor a second set of reader to device information. The first device 110 may determine whether a second condition for transferring from the second monitoring state to the first monitoring state is satisfied. In this case, if the second condition is satisfied, the first device 210 may monitor a first set of reader to device information.

[0058] In some embodiments, the second device 220 may transmit (2030) fourth reader to device information to the first device 210. The fourth reader to device information may belong to the second set of reader to device information. In this case, the first device 210 may determine the second condition being satisfied, based on the reception of the fourth reader to device information.

[0059] In some other embodiments, the second device 220 may transmit (2030) fifth reader to device information to the first device 210. The fifth reader to device information may belong to the first set of reader to device information. In this case, based on the reception of the fifth reader to device information, the first device 210 may determine the second condition being satisfied. In some embodiments, the first device 210 may determine the second condition being satisfied based on an expiration of a first timer. In some embodiments, if the first device 210 is in the first monitoring state, the first device 210 may ignore the second set of reader to device information.

[0060] In some embodiments, the first device 210 may monitor paging information in the first monitoring state. In this case, if the paging information is received, the first device 210 may transmit (2040) a device to reader message to the second device 220 and monitor a reader to device message in the second monitoring state. In this case, if non-acknowledgment (NACK) information that is used to terminate message 2 monitoring is received, the first device 210 may transfer from the second monitoring state to the first monitoring state. Alternatively, if a new paging message is received, the first device 210 may transfer from the second monitoring state to the first monitoring state. In some other embodiments, if a time duration after a reference point exceeds a time threshold, the first device 210 may transfer from the second monitoring state to the first monitoring state. For example, if NACK information which is used to terminated Msg2 monitoring (the fourth R2D information) or a new paging (the firth R2D information) or time after the reference point beyond a threshold (the first timer expiries) , the first device 210 transfers to the first monitoring state. In this case, the first device 210 may receive the reader to device message from the second device 220, after transferring to the first monitoring state. The first device 210 may ignore the received reader to device message.

[0061] In some embodiments, after transmitting a first message in a random access procedure, the first device 210 may start a first timer to monitor a second message in the random access procedure. In this case, in some embodiments, if the second message is received by the first device and identity information in the second message does not match identity information in the first message and the second message indicates that there is a further second message, the first device 210 may start a second timer or restart the first timer. Alternatively, if the second message is received by the first device, identity information in the second message does not match identity information in the first message and the second message indicates that there no further second message, the first device 210 may stop the second timer and the first timer.

[0062] In some embodiments, if the first timer or a second timer is running, the first device 210 may monitor the second message. Alternatively, if none of the first or second timer is running, the first device 210 may skip monitoring the second message. In some other embodiments, the first device 210 may stop the first timer or the second timer based on a reception of a non-acknowledgement (NACK) indication from the second device 120.

[0063] For example, as shown in FIG. 3, after transmission of PDRCH Msg1 3010, the first device (such as, the devices 310-1, 310-2 and 310-3) starts a first timer to monitor PRDCH Msg2 3020. If the PRDCH Msg2 3020 is received by the first device and the ID information in the Msg2 3020 does not match the ID formation transmitted in Msg1 3010, and PRDCH Msg2 3020 indicates there is further PRDCH Msg2 by the bit field indication, the device (such as, the device 310-1 and the device 310-3) starts a second timer or restart the first timer. If the ID information in the Msg2 3020 matches the ID formation transmitted in Msg1 3010, the reader may exchange messages 3030 with the device 310-2.

[0064] Alternatively, if the PRDCH Msg2 3040 is received by the first device, and the ID information in the Msg2 3040 does not match the ID formation transmitted in Msg1 3010, and PRDCH Msg2 3040 indicates there is no further PRDCH Msg2 by the bit field indication, the device (such as, the device 310-1) stops the second timer and the first timer. In some other embodiments, if the ID information in the Msg2 3040 does not match the ID formation transmitted in Msg1 3010, the reader may exchange messages 3050 with the device 310-3.

[0065] If the first timer or the second timer is running, the first device monitors PRDCH Msg2. Otherwise, the first device does not monitor PRDCH Msg2. Reader may indicate NACK indication to stop device’s monitor timer. NACK indication may be a specific command / message, a predefine RN16 number (e.g., all zeros or all ones) , or an undetected RN16 value with no further indication.

[0066] Reference is made to FIG. 4, which illustrates a signaling flow 400 of monitoring a transmission between a reader and a device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 400 involves the first device 410 and the second device 420. The first device 410 may be an ambient IoT device and the second device 420 may be a reader. The first device 410 is required to monitor PRDCH in any time unless it transmits PDRCH. Some time gaps before and after the PDRCH transmission may be reserved not for PRDCH reception.

[0067] The first device 410 monitor (4010) a reader to device transmission. The transmission of reader to device transmission for a second set of devices is simultaneous with a reception of device to reader transmissions of a first set of devices at the second device 420. The transmission of reader to device transmission is on the FDD downlink spectrum and the reception of device to reader transmissions is on the FDD uplink spectrum. The reader to device transmission provides time slot information for a second set of devices. The second set of deceives and the first set of devices are different devices. The reader to device transmission may provide time slot information for time division multiplexing time slot start timing. For example, a PRDCH may provide time slot information for PDRCH TDM time slot start timing. The first device 410 may assume a time slot for PDRCH is started after a time gap of the end of PRDCH providing time slot information. For example, as shown in FIG. 5, the device set 510-1 may assume the time domain resource 530-1 for the PDRCH is started after a time gap 540 from the end of the R2D transmission 520-1. The device set 510-2 may assume the time domain resource 530-2 for the PDRCH is started after a time gap 541 from the end of the R2D transmission 520-2. The device set 510-3 may assume the time domain resource 530-3 for the PDRCH is started after a time gap 542 from the end of the R2D transmission 520-3.

[0068] The first device 410 transmits (4020) , to the second device 420, a device to reader transmission. In some embodiments, a time slot for the device to reader transmission may be started after a time gap of an end of the reader to device transmission. In some embodiments, if the reader to device transmission is received before a time gap of the device to reader transmission, the first device 410 may transmit the device to reader transmission based on a timing indication. For example, if the first device 410 receives PRDCH providing time slot information before a time gap of its PDRCH transmission, the first device 410 may transmit PDRCH based on PRDCH timing indication.

[0069] The first device 410 stops (4030) the monitoring of the reader to device transmission, based on the transmission of the device to reader transmission. Reader may early terminate one time domain resource by a R2D time slot indication when there is no signal detected at the beginning of a time domain resources which implies there is no PDRCH transmission on this resources.

[0070] In some embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, an indication indicating a next time slot or a random access round for a random access of another device. A random access round is an occasion or opportunity that ambient IoT device may select to transmit random access information. Reader could indicate many random access rounds and device could select one of random access round for the random access. For example, when contention transmission of Msg1 is detected by the reader or when there is no transmission of Msg1 is detected by the reader, the reader may indicate the next time slot or new RACH occasion / round for other device’s random access simultaneous with the contention devices’ rest transmission or before the end of time domain resources allocated / reserved for Msg1 transmission.

[0071] For example, as shown in FIG. 6, the devices 610-3 may receive the new round indication 630. The new round indication may indicate the Msg1 PDRCH 640 which is for the device 610-3. The device 610-3 may monitor Msg2 650.

[0072] In some embodiments, the first device 410 may start a first timer after a first message in a random access procedure. For example, the devices 610-1 and 610-2 may start the first timer after the Msg1 PDRCH 620. A duration of the first timer may be equal to a duration of a time domain resource for the transmission of the first message. Since the time expiries before the Msg2 650, devices 610-1 and 610-2 does not monitor Msg2 650. For example, to support efficient management of early termination of time domain slot, the first device starts a first timer after transmission PDRCH Msg1. The duration of the first timer equals to the duration of the time domain resources for PDRCH Msg1 transmission.

[0073] In some embodiments, if a second message in the random access procedure corresponding to the first message is not received before an expiration of the first timer, the first device 410 may determine that a random access is unsuccessful complete. For example, as shown in FIG. 6, if there is no response received before the first timer expires, the device 610-1 may not monitor the Msg2 650. If the device 610-1 doesn’t receive a PRDCH Msg2 corresponding to the Msg1 transmission before the first timer expire, the device 610-1 regards the random access is unsuccessful complete.

[0074] In some embodiments, to further reduce the latency of inventory, the reader may start the next RACH / Paging occasion / round when the previous transmission is transmitting. Considering the previous transmission could be successful complete or unsuccessful complete, there could multiple indication to support this feature.

[0075] In some embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, a new round indication with a successful complete of current round. In this case, if the first device initiates a random access in the current round, the first device 410 may determine the random access is successful. For example, as shown in FIG. 7, the device 610-1 may transmit message 3 carrying device ID 621 for the random access. If the round successful complete is received by the device 610-1, the device 610-1 may consider a successful complete of the random access. Alternatively, if the first device 410 does not initiate a random access in the current round, the first device 410 may initiate a random access in a subsequent round. For example, as shown in FIG. 7, if the new round indication 631 is received by the device 610-2 and the device 610-2 does not initiate the random access, the device 610-2 may transmit the Msg1 641 on PDRCH to the reader. In some embodiments, the reader may indicate this message to device after the Msg3 PDRCH transmission carrying device ID is successful received by the reader. For devices involved in the current round, they regard the RACH / Paging is successful completed. For devices not involved in the current round, they start a new round.

[0076] In some embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, a new round indication with an unsuccessful complete of current round. In this case, if the first device initiates a random access in the current round, the first device 410 may determine the random access is unsuccessful. Alternatively, if the first device 410 does not initiate the random access in the current round, the first device 410 may initiate a random access in a subsequent round. For example, the reader may indicate this message to device duration or after the Msg3 PDRCH transmission carrying device ID will not or is not successful received by the reader. For devices involved in the current round, they regard the RACH / Paging is unsuccessful completed. For devices not involved in the current round, they start a new round.

[0077] In some embodiments, the first device 410 may receive, from the second device 420, a new round indication, a round successful complete indication, or a round unsuccessful complete indication. In this case, if the first device initiates a random access in the current round, the first device 410 may ignore the new round indication. Alternatively, if the first device does not initiate a random access in the current round, the first device 410 may initiate a random access in a subsequent round. For example, if the reader transmits the new round indication, for devices involved in the current round, they are not expect to receive this message or they ignore this message. For devices not involved in the current round, they start a new round. Alternatively, if indicates round successful complete, for devices involved in a RACH / Paging round, (and Msg3 or contention free random access (CFRA Msg1 message carrying device’s ID is transmitted) , they consider the RACH / Paging is successful completed. Alternatively, if indicates round unsuccessful complete, for devices involved in a RACH / Paging round, (and Msg3 or CFRA Msg1 message carrying device’s ID is transmitted) , they consider the RACH / Paging is unsuccessful completed.

[0078] In some embodiments, a time domain resource of a third message in a random access procedure is based on a reference reader to device transmission which is transmitted after a second message in the random access procedure. For example, the reference reader to device transmission is indicated by a message or a reference indication field in the second message.

[0079] In some embodiments, after transmission of PDRCH Msg1 on Msg1 TDM resource 622, the device 610-1 receives PRDCH Msg2 632 indicating allocation PDRCH resources for Msg3 transmission from the reader 605. In some embodiments, the time domain resources of PDRCH Msg3 is based on the reference PRDCH (i.e., may not be Msg2 PRDCH) , which may be transmitted after Msg2 PRDCH. For example, the reference PRDCH may be a specific PRDCH by specific message. Alternatively, the reference PDRCH may be a PRDCH Msg2 633 with a reference indication field indicating that the PRDCH is reference PRDCH. In this way, reader could indicate Msg2 immediately after transmission of Msg1 when TDM of Msg1 is applied to reduce latency of Msg3 transmission.

[0080] In some embodiments, there is possibility that Msg1 is not contention for different devices where different devices select the same random number. For 16 bits random number, the probability is 2^ (-16) . When the devices transmit Msg3 by indicating their device ID, some contention may happen. The reader may detect from which bit the contention happens, e.g., by line coding invalid chip or by two different decoding branch. A contention avoidance retransmission mechanism may be used when contention is detected by the reader. The reader may indicate the retransmission of Msg3 together with a bit index / position indication. If the device’s transmission bit of the indicated index / position is 0 or 1, the device may retransmit Msg3, otherwise the device may not retransmit Msg3. The contention may happen on multiple bit positions. The reader may indicate one of (e.g., the first) position where bit level contention is detected. That means one device would transmit 0 on that position and another device would transmit 1 on that position, as shown in Table 1. The reader can indicate the position and only one of those devices could retransmission based on the predefined rules. Table 1

[0081] In some embodiments, for PDRCH transmission by a device with low SFO, e.g. less than 100 ppm, a random chip offset from [0, 1, 2] is selected by the device, as shown in Table 2. For convolutional code and MU-MIMO detection by the reader, simultaneous transmission of the different devices may be detected by the reader. Since there is no scrambling on the device’s transmission, a random offset has benefit on interference randomization thus has benefit for multi-devices detection. Table 2

[0082] FIG. 9 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 900 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 900 will be described from the perspective of the device 110 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the method 900 further includes receiving, the reader to device message, after transferring to the first monitoring state; and causing the received reader to device message to be ignored.

[0094] In some example embodiments, the method 900 further includes based on a transmission of a first message in a random access procedure, starting a first timer to monitor a second message in the random access procedure.

[0095] In some example embodiments, the method 900 further includes starting a second timer or restart the first timer, in response to that: the second message is received by the first device, identity information in the second message does not match identity information in the first message, and the second message indicates that there is a further second message.

[0096] In some example embodiments, the method 900 further includes stopping a second timer and the first timer, in response to that: the second message is received by the first device, identity information in the second message does not match identity information in the first message, and the second message indicates that there no further second message.

[0098] In some example embodiments, the method 900 further includes stopping the first timer or a second timer based on a reception of a non-acknowledgement (NACK) indication from the first device.

[0099] FIG. 10 illustrates a flowchart of a communication method 1000 implemented at a first device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the device 110 in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B.

[0100] At block 1010, the first device monitors a reader to device transmission.

[0101] At block 1020, the first device transmits, to a second device, a device to reader transmission.

[0102] At block 1030, the first device causes the monitoring of the reader to device transmission to be stopped, based on the transmission of the device to reader transmission. The reader to device transmission is simultaneous with a reception of device to reader transmissions of a first set of devices at the second device, the reader to device transmission provides time slot information for a second set of devices, and the second set of deceives and the first set of devices are different devices.

[0103] In some example embodiments, the reader to device transmission provides time slot information for time division multiplexing time slot start timing, a time slot for the device to reader transmission is started after a time gap of an end of the reader to device transmission.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes in response to receiving the reader to device transmission before a time gap of the device to reader transmission, transmitting the device to reader transmission based on a timing indication.

[0105] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes receiving, from the second device, an indication indicating a next time slot or a random access round for a random access of another device.

[0106] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes starting a first timer after a first message in a random access procedure, wherein a duration of the first timer equals to a duration of a time domain resource for the transmission of the first message.

[0107] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes in response to not receiving a second message in the random access procedure corresponding to the first message before an expiration of the first timer, determining that a random access is unsuccessful complete.

[0108] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes receiving, from the second device, a new round indication with a successful complete of current round; and in response to the first device initiating a random access in the current round, determining the random access is successful; or in response to the first device not initiating a random access in the current round, initiating a random access in a subsequent round.

[0109] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes receiving, from the second device, a new round indication with an unsuccessful complete of current round; and in response to the first device initiating a random access in the current round, determining the random access is unsuccessful; or in response to the first device not initiating a random access in the current round, initiating a random access in a subsequent round.

[0110] In some example embodiments, the method 1000 further includes receiving, from the second device, a new round indication; and in response to the first device initiating a random access in the current round, ignoring the new round indication; or in response to the first device not initiating a random access in the current round, initiating a random access in a subsequent round.

[0111] In some example embodiments, a time domain resource of a third message in a random access procedure is based on a reference reader to device transmission which is transmitted after a second message in the random access procedure.

[0112] In some example embodiments, the reference reader to device transmission is indicated by a message or a reference indication field in the second message.
