Description

[0045] FIG. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 may include terminal device 110, network device 120.

[0046] It is to be understood that the number of network devices and terminal devices is only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The system 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and terminal devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0047] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) and the sixth generation (6G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0048] In the 3GPP network, the total number of simultaneously active beams is restricted by satellite level power. For example, the simultaneous active beams are 10.02%, 1.5%and 10.02%for different scenarios respectively. This determines the fraction of area that can be served under the satellite footprint. One way to increase the fraction of coverage area is to increase the number of simultaneous active beams. However, due to the power budget and number of RF chains available at the satellite payload, the number of active beams cannot be increased beyond certain limit. This eventually leads to the utilization of beam hopping.

[0049] In addition, based on the LEO600km Set1-2 FR1 (i.e., S-band) , if assuming dwell time of common control channels and dedicate data channel for every 4*16 beam footprints are both 10ms respectively, and the periodicity of common control channels (ms) for the N2 beam footprints is 160ms, then the number of served beam footprints can be derived as follows: 4×16×160÷20=512. The total number of beam footprints is 1058, therefore, the common control channel coverage ratio can be 48.393%. Based on the above result, in order to enlarge the common channel coverage ratio, the straightforward way is using wide beams then the number of beam footprints can be reduced accordingly.

[0050] FIG. 1B illustrates an example of occasion for SSB and SIB1. The UE may monitor the Type0-PDCCH for scheduling SIB1 according to the best received SSB, i.e., the highest SNR. And since the SSBs are all under the same cell, they will all be providing SIB1 carrying the same information content (cell configuration) , and hence it does not make any difference which SIB1 is received from UE or cell perspective.

[0051] Currently, there are wide beam-based solutions for the purpose of enlarging the common channel coverage ratio under restriction of maximum SSB periodicity (e.g., 160ms) . For example, a solution can configure CSI-RS or reference point of narrow beam in SIB1. Therefore, UE can measure or choose according to geographical information best beam and inform to gNB. And another solution can configure NCD-SSB (Non-cell defined SSB) in SIB1 and therefore, UE can measure NCD-SSB which transmit with narrow and report best beam to gNB.

[0052] However, both the above solutions use the same wide beam for transmitting SSB and SIB1, because the narrow beam need be configured in SIB1. FIG. 1C an example of use the same wide beam for transmitting SSB and SIB1.

[0053] In addition, if both SIB1 and SSB are transmitted with wide beam, the link budget margin of SSB is 5.59dB higher than Type0-PDCCH scheduling for SIB1. Furthermore, according to RP-243300, both PDCCH and PDSCH for SIB1 can be improved by link level enhancements. However, the SIB1 even has a loss of at least 3dB or 6dB depending on width of wide beam if transmission is with wide beam (compared to the situation of 2 or 4 smaller beams providing coverage) , which is not acceptable.

[0054] FIG. 1D an example of resource allocation for SSB and SIB1. As shown in FIG. 1D, with narrow beam maintain the same periodicity of SSB, e.g., 160ms, in the dwell time of common control channel, for instance, 4 times SIB1 repetitions than SSB (with the assumption that 4 narrow beams are associated to a wide beam) . Hence, the time domain resource in dwell time of common control channel cannot afford resource allocation for SIB1. For instance, consider the following parameters, dwell time of common control and data channel are 10ms (10 slots in case sub-carrier space of 15KHz) , 4 SSBs occupy 2 slots (2 SSBs per slot) , 4 SIBs with narrow beams per SSB occupy at least 2 slots, therefore, all SIB1 occupy at least 8 slots, there is not any remaining slots for SIB19.

[0055] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for transmission with beams. With this solution, the SSB and the SIB1 are transmitted via the beams with different periodicities and coverage areas, thereby improving the performance of communication with the beams. Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0056] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for transmission with beams according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110, the network device 120 as illustrated in FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that although the process 200 for link has been described in the communication system 100 of FIG. 1A, this process may be likewise applied to other communication scenarios where different network devices are jointly deployed.

[0057] In some embodiments, the network device 120 transmit 202 to the terminal device 110, an SSB 204 via a first type of beam. And the terminal device 110 receives 206 the SSB with the first periodicity. Then the network device 120 transmits 208 to the terminal device 110, a SIB1 210 via a second type of beam, with a second periodicity, in an occasion associated with the transmission of the SSB. The terminal device 110 receives 212 the SIB1 210, with a second periodicity, in an occasion associated with the transmission of the SSB. The coverage area of the first type of beam is covered by a set of the second type of beams. The second periodicity is a multiple of the first periodicity. And a number of the SIB1 during the second periodicity is an integer multiple of a number of SSB during the first periodicity.

[0058] With the solution of the process, the solution for transmitting the SSB and the SIB1 via the beams with different periodicities and different beams is provided, thereby improving the performance of communication with beams.

[0059] In some embodiments, the SIB1 carried by type-0 physical downlink control channel (Type0-PDCCH) . Specifically, both the Type0-PDCCH (scheduling SIB1) and scheduled PDSCH carrying the SIB1 are referred as SIB1. Therefore, the solutions will apply equally to both the PDCCH and / or PDSCH of SIB1.

[0060] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of a plurality of narrow beams which will be splitting the satellite footprint covered by a wide beam according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3, the SSB geographical coverage is split into N partitions, each partition is covered by one narrow beam, where the N narrow beams provide the same or similar geographical coverage as the associated SSB wide beam. SIB1 is transmitted with narrow beam. To maintain the same control signaling overhead, the periodicity of SIB1 of each narrow beam is extended to N times the wide cell SSB periodicity.

[0061] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of a sketch of a physical layer procedure for initial access with sparser SIB1 transmission from gNB perspective according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 4, the gNB transmits Cell-defined SSB (CD-SSB) with wide beam that covers the one satellite footprint, and UE receives the SSB and get the downlink synchronization. Then the gNB transmits Type0-PDCCH and PDSCH conveying SIB1 message with different options as described below.

[0062] FIG. 5A illustrates an example of example of SIB1 evenly distributed in SSB periodicities according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0063] In some embodiments, the SIB1 is transmitted via multiple beams with the second type, a first beam with the second type is transmitted after a first transmission of the SSB during a first period of the first periodicity. And a second beam with the second type is transmitted after a second transmission of the SSB during a second period of the first periodicity. In other word, a first occasion of the SIB1 is following a first transmission of the SSB during a first period of the first periodicity. And a second occasion of the SIB1 is following a second transmission of the SSB during a second period of the first periodicity.

[0064] Specifically, as shown in FIG. 5A, each SIB1 transmission with narrow beam follows each wide beam SSB transmission (one-one mapping) . In the pattern, each N times SIB1 transmissions will cover the whole footprint covered by the wider beam. With this option, the UE is naturally monitoring Type0-PDCCH which is for the scheduling of SIB1 with different narrow beams. In some embodiments, the Type0-PDCCH search space for different narrow beam is following SSB beam index.

[0065] In some embodiment, the SIB1 comprises an index of a beam associated with the SIB1. Specifically, in order for the UE to understand the narrow beam index the UE has found (i.e. PDCCH and PDSCH carrying SIB1 successfully decoded) , information of the narrow beam index used for the transmission needs to be added in SIB1.

[0066] In some embodiment, an index of a beam associated with the SIB1 is associated with a time interval. Specifically, the index of the beam is indicated implicitly. A narrow beam index is associated with an interval of time, e.g. for SFN from 0 to 16, beam index #0 is transmitted.

[0067] In some embodiment, the SIB1 comprises information of a relationship between the index of a beam associated with the SIB1 and the time interval. Specifically, transmitted beam indexes and time relationship can be further indicated via SIB1.

[0068] FIG. 5B illustrates an example of SIB1 occasion for 4 SSB footprints crossing 4 SSB period according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5B, in the dwell common channel time (10 slots) , 4 SSBs with 4 satellite footprints, in one dwell time within SSB period, the only one SIB1 with narrow beam associated with 1 SSB (wide beam) is transmitted. The 4 beam#0 in FIG. 5B are different, each belonging to a different wide beam. Actually they are associated to the 4 SSBs respectively (the wide beam of each SSB is different which may be corresponding to different satellite footprints) .

[0069] FIG. 6A illustrates an example of extended SIB1 periodicity for one SSB in case of multiple SSBs within one SSB period according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Specifically, all the narrow beams of SIB1 repetitions associated to one SSB are transmitted after the SSB transmission within a same SSB period (one-to-N mapping) . The narrow beams of SIB1 associated to multiple SSBs are evenly distributed in occasions during extended SIB1 periodicity. The benefit of the option is smaller latency for SIB1 reception.

[0070] In some embodiments, additional monitoring occasions for SIB1 may be defined (for a same or different search space) each monitoring occasion corresponding to a specific narrow beam index.

[0071] In some embodiments, each monitoring occasion may be used by any beam index, and beam index information is added to the SIB1 or indicated separately to the UE.

[0072] FIG. 6B illustrates an example of 4 SIB1 beams for 1 SSB with total 4 SSB footprints during one SSB period according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0073] In some embodiment, a number of occasions of the SIB1 are following a transmission of the SSB during a period of the first periodicity. In other word, the SIB1 is transmitted via multiple beams with the second type, and the multiple beams are transmitted after a transmission of the SSB during a period of the first periodicity.

[0074] Specifically, as shown in FIG. 6B, in the dwell common channel time (10 slots shown as following figure) , 4 SSBs with 4 satellite footprints, the corresponding SIB1 with 4 narrow beams may be extended in one dwell time. In total there are 16 different narrow beams, and every 4 narrow beams are associated to one SSB. In each SSB period, all the 4 narrow beams associated to an SSB are used for the 4 transmissions of SIB1 corresponding to this SSB.

[0075] FIG. 6C illustrates an example of 2 SIB1 beams for 1 SSB with total 4 SSB footprints during one SSB period according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0076] In some embodiments, a number of occasions of the SIB1 corresponding to a first set of SSBs are following transmissions of a first set of SSB during a first period of the first periodicity, and a number of occasions of the SIB1 corresponding to a second set of SSBs are transmitted after transmissions of the second set of SSBs during a second period of the first periodicity. In other word, a multiple of beams with the second type associated with a first set of the SSBs are transmitted after the transmissions of the first set of the SSBs, and a multiple of beams with the second type associated with a second set of the SSBs are transmitted after the transmissions of the second set of the SSB.

[0077] Specifically, as shown in FIG. 6C, in the dwell common channel time (10 slots shown as following figure) , 4 SSBs with 4 satellite footprints, the corresponding SIB1 with 2 narrow beams may be extended in one dwell time. in total there are 8 narrow beams corresponding to the 4 SSBs. Two narrow beams are associated to one SSB. beam#0 and beam#1 of the first SSB period is associated to SSB#0, beam#2 and beam#3 of the first SSB period is associated to SSB#1, beam#0 and beam#1 of the 2nd SSB period is associated to SSB#2, beam#2 and beam#3 of the 2nd SSB period is associated to SSB#3.

[0078] In some embodiments, the UE skips a rest of the monitoring occasion of the SIB1 based on determining that the SIB1 is decoded successfully. The SIB1 comprises a number of beams associated with the SIB1. Specifically, the number of SIB1 narrow beams associated to one wide beam may be configured in SIB1 message. Once UE decodes SIB1 successfully, then the rest of SIB1 occasions within the narrow beam period can be skipped, the narrow beam index can be derived from the receiving occasion (in time, SFN or other time wise related parameters) .

[0079] In some embodiments, the different beams associated with the SIB1 have different second periodicities. Specifically, the periodicity of SIB1 of different narrow beams may be configured in SIB1 message, thus the gNB may configure different periodicities for different SIB1 narrow beams according to traffic load.

[0080] In some embodiments, the terminal device decodes a number of the received SIB1, and select a beam associated with the SIB1 with a highest quality according to a threshold. The SIB1 comprises a threshold for selecting a beam with the highest quality associated with the SIB1. The threshold of SIB RSRP or SINR is configured in SIB1 message, it is beneficial for UE to choose the highest quality beam for subsequent preamble (Msg1) transmission. gNB may transmit Rach Access Response / Contention Resolution (called Msg2 / 4) with highest quality beam indicated by preamble (Msg1) .

[0081] Below is an example of the parameters in SIB1 for assistance of sparser SIB1 reception as described above. numberOfSib1Beams-r19: the number of SIB1 beams sib1-NarrowBeamIndex-r1: the narrow beam index of SIB1 sib1-BeamPeriodicity-r19: the periodicity of one SIB1 beam sib1-BeamPeriodicityList-r19: the periodicity list for all number of SIB1 beams sib1BeamSelectThresholdRsrp-r19: the threshold for SIB1 beam selection

[0082] Refer back to FIG. 4, the UE selects the best narrow beam based on the SIB1 reception and transmit Msg1 in RACH occasion based on selected best narrow beam. Then the gNB transmits Msg2 / 4 transmission with narrow that is indicated by Msg1.

[0083] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart illustrating an example of process for sparser SIB1 transmission according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The UE 701 is an example of the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1A. The gNB 703 is an example of the network device 120 in FIG. 1A.

[0084] At 702, the gNB 703 transmits the SSB / PBCH block with wide beam in first 160ms. At 704, UE 701 is monitoring SS / PBCH block in each 160ms (SSB periodicity) . At 706, the gNB 703 transmits the SIB1 with narrow beam #0 corresponding SSB during the same 5ms as SSB.

[0085] At 708, after obtaining DL synchronization from SSB, the UE 701 is monitoring Type0-PDCCH to decode SIB1. In the first occasion, the UE 701 fails to decode SIB1 with beam #0. At 710, the gNB 703 transmits SS / PBCH block with wide beam in second 160ms. At 712, the gNB 703 transmits SIB1 with narrow beam #1 corresponding SSB during the same 5ms as SSB.

[0086] At 714, the UE 701 is continue monitoring Type0-PDCCH. At 716, the UE 701 decodes SIB1 successfully and obtain the parameters of sib1-NarrowBeamIndex-r19, numberOfSib1Beams-r19, sib1BeamSelectThresholdRsrp-r19. Meanwhile, the measured RSRP fulfills the threshold configured in the SIB. It is noted that there is no logical conflict here, as the UE 701 is able to decode the SIB1, and therefore able to obtain the needed RSRP threshold of the SIB1 selection mechanism. At 718, the measured RSRP fulfills the threshold configured in the SIB, the narrow beam #1 is selected for Msg1. At 720, the gNB 703 transmits SS / PBCH block with wide beam in second 160ms. At 722, the gNB 703 transmits SIB1 with narrow beam #2 corresponding SSB during the same 5ms as SSB.

[0087] At 724, the UE 701 stops monitoring the rest occasion of Type0-PDCCH within the number of SIB1 beams. At 726, the gNB 703 transmits SS / PBCH block with wide beam in second 160ms. At 728, the gNB 703 transmits SIB1 with narrow beam #3 corresponding SSB during the same 5ms as SSB. At 730, beam#1 is chosen for RACH Occasion (RO) of preamble transmission. At 732, the Msg1 is transmitted in RO corresponding to narrow beam #1.

[0088] In view of the above description of the various embodiments of the present disclosure, these embodiments of the present disclosure provide different alternative solutions for transmitting SIB1 with repetitions for a plurality of narrow beams which will be splitting the satellite footprint covered by a wide beam into a plurality of partitions and extending the SIB1 periodicity based on periodicity of SSB which is transmitted with a wide beam. Advantage of the solutions is maintaining the SIB1 link budget in case of SSB transmission with wide beam to fulfill the requirement of restricting the maximum number of simultaneous active beams. And additionally the issue of the coverage and control channel overhead of SIB1 is solved.

[0089] FIG. 8 shows a flowchart of an example method 800 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.

[0119] Further, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.

[0120] Although the present disclosure has been described in languages specific to structural features and / or methodological acts, it is to be understood that the present disclosure defined in the appended claims is not necessarily limited to the specific features or acts described above. Rather, the specific features and acts described above are disclosed as example forms of implementing the claims.
