Description

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION METHOD AND RELATED APPARATUSESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to wireless communication, and more particularly, to a wireless communication method and related apparatuses.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] In cellular wireless communication systems developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) , user equipment (UE) is connected by a wireless link to a radio access network (RAN) . The RAN includes a set of base stations (BSs) which provide wireless links to UEs located in cells covered by the base station and an interface to a core network (CN) which provides overall network control. The RAN and CN each conduct respective functions in relation to the overall network. The so-called 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, namely, an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunication System Territorial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) has been developed for a mobile access network where one or more macro-cells are supported by a base station known as an eNodeB or eNB (evolved NodeB) . Evolved from LTE, the so-called 5G or new radio (NR) systems where one or more cells are supported by a base station known as a gNB. Envisioned to succeed the current 5G networks, the 6G cellular system is the forthcoming generation of wireless communication technology.

[0003] 3GPP is discussing alternative ways for 6G system design. There are few scenarios, when UE will need to communicate with various Network Functions (NFs) within the Service Based Architecture (SBA) , i.e. Service Based Interface (SBI) network. For instance, UE may be tasked to send specific Non-Access Stratum (NAS) messages to 6G AMF and 6G SMF via User Plane (6G UE -> 6G RAN -> UPF -> 6G AMS) , or with 6G LMF (6G UE -> 6G RAN -> UPF -> 6G LMF, or 6G UE -> 6G RAN -> UPF -> 6G AMS -> 6G LMF) . UE may also need to exchange messages and data with a Data Plane controller, e.g. a Data Plane Access Controller (DPAC) (6G UE -> 6G RAN -> DPAC, or 6G UE -> 6G RAN -> 6G AMS -> DPAC) . In order to enable the above-described communications, User Plane connectivity needs to become available to the UE also in those scenarios, when legacy events have not triggered the establishment of a Protocol Data Unit (PDU) session.SUMMARY

[0004] An object of the present application is to propose a wireless communication method and related apparatus, which can solve issues in the relevant art, ensuring signalling to / from core network function (s) , provide a good communication performance, and / or provide high reliability.

[0027] In this document, the term “ / ” should be interpreted to indicate “and / or. ” A combination such as “at least one of A, B, or C, ” “one or more of A, B, or C, ” “at least one of A, B, and C, ” “one or more of A, B, and C, ” or “A, B, and / or C” may be A only, B only, C only, A and B, A and C, B and C, or A and B and C, where any combination may contain one or more members of A, B, or C.

[0028] The following table includes some abbreviations used in some embodiments of the present application:

[0029] FIG. 1 shows a 5G architecture. Devices involved in the 5G architecture include UE, a Radio Access Network (RAN) , a User Plane Function (UPF) , a Data Network (DN) , an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) , a Session Management Function (SMF) , a Policy Control Function (PCF) , an Application Function (AF) , an Authentication Server Function (AUSF) , and Unified Data Management (UDM) . It is noted that this application may be applicable to the architecture shown in FIG. 1, but is not limited thereto. The application can also be applied to future communication system such as 6G system.

[0030] As shown in FIG. 1, the UPF plays a crucial role in the user plane architecture of the core network, specifically within the 5G Core (5GC) . Once the SMF provisions the UPF with PDRs, i.e. the rules for detecting and handling the packets, the UPF becomes responsible for managing and forwarding user plane data traffic between the RAN and external data networks, such as the Internet or private networks. Policy related network elements mainly include the PCF, which enforced the policy by communicating these to the AMF, the SMF, the RAN, and the UE. The PCF determines policy rules for network behaviors. This may include deciding how network resources are allocated, ensuring efficiency of network capabilities. The SMF is mainly responsible for executing session management tasks. The AMF is mainly responsible for executing access and UE mobility management tasks. Policy transmission and update of the two network elements (the AMF and the SMF) are managed and controlled by the PCF.

[0031] FIG. 2 illustrates that, in some embodiments, a user equipment (UE) 10 and one or more network elements or network devices 20 in a communication network system 30 according to an embodiment of the present application are provided. The communication network system 30 includes the UE 10 and one or more network elements or network devices 20. The network elements or network devices 20 may refer to more than one type of network element or network device. One of these could be 6G counterpart of 5G NFs, like AMF and SMF. Another type is a new network element or network device, which is placed on the border of the 6G SBI network. The UE 10 may include a memory 12, a transceiver 13, and a processor 11 coupled to the memory 12 and the transceiver 13. The one or more network elements or network devices 20 may include a memory 22, a transceiver 23, and a processor 21 coupled to the memory 22 and the transceiver 23. The processor 11 or 21 may be configured to implement proposed functions, procedures and / or methods described in this description. Layers of radio interface protocol may be implemented in the processor 11 or 21. The memory 12 or 22 is operatively coupled with the processor 11 or 21 and stores a variety of information to operate the processor 11 or 21. The transceiver 13 or 23 is operatively coupled with the processor 11 or 21, and the transceiver 13 or 23 transmits and / or receives a radio signal.

[0037] In some embodiments, the processor 21 of the network element or network device 20 is configured to be indicated by a user equipment (UE) that signalling protocol data unit (PDU) session establishment is requested, by one of the following: (i) receiving a signalling PDU session establishment request information element (IE) to establish a signalling PDU session for signalling transmission; (ii) receiving an always-on PDU session indication IE to indicate a PDU session as always-on, wherein an always-on PDU session is a PDU session for which user plane resources have to be activated; and (iii) receiving both the signalling PDU session establishment request IE and the always-on PDU session indication IE.

[0038] FIG. 3 is a flowchart of a wireless communication method 100 by a user equipment (UE) according to a first embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 3, the wireless communication method 100 includes the following steps. In Step 102, the UE initiates a data session establishment procedure to establish a dedicated data session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session) after successful registration with the communication network, wherein no ordinary user plane data can flow via the dedicated data session. The dedicated data session may be dedicated to various types of signalling between the UE and at least a core network function (NF) . For example, the core network function may include at least one of access and mobility management function (AMF) , session management function (SMF) , location management function (LMF) or data plane access controller (DPAC) . The ordinary user plane data is conventional end-user traffic (such as multimedia, web content, and other everyday communications) that is transmitted over the network’s user plane. In some embodiments, the dedicated data session may be associated with a data network name (DNN) , which identifies an entry point to a service based interface (SBI) network. In some embodiments, the dedicated data session may be subject to a network slicing framework. This ensures signalling to / from core network function (s) .

[0039] FIG. 4 is a flowchart of a wireless communication method 200 by a network element according to a second embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 4, the wireless communication method 200 includes the following steps. In Step 202, the network element establishes a dedicated data session for a user equipment (UE) after the UE successfully registers with the communication network, wherein the dedicated data session is established by a data session establishment procedure initiated by the UE, and no ordinary user plane data can flow via the dedicated data session. Other details of the method 200 may be referred to the method 100 described above and are not repeated herein.

[0040] Please refer to the followings for more details.

[0041] This application offers a solution, which is based on the following assumptions.

[0042] ● 6G UE shall register with a standalone 6G system, i.e. when 6G RAN is connected only to 6G Core network.

[0043] ● 6G UE shall also register with legacy 3GPP system, if available. Therefore, ideally two 3GPP accesses should simultaneously be available to a 6G UE.

[0044] After the successful registration with 6G system, the 6G UE shall initiate the establishment of a special PDU session. This PDU session shall have the following characteristics:

[0045] 1. The PDU session shall be dedicated to various types of signalling between a 6G UE and 6G Core Network Functions (6G NFs) , like 6G AMF, 6G SMF, 6G LMF, DPAC and so forth. Therefore, no ordinary user plane data (such as multimedia, web content, and other everyday communications) can flow via the established connectivity.

[0046] 2. Such PDU session will need to have a special DNN, which identifies the entry points to the SBI Network, i.e. to the network that interconnects 6G NFs. In other words, N6 interface will connect PSA UPF with a selected entry point to the SBI Network.

[0047] 3. The PDU session may also benefit from utilizing network slicing framework, as different signalling flows may have different QoS requirements.

[0048] FIG. 5 is a flowchart of a wireless communication method 300 by a network element according to a third embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 5, the wireless communication method 300 includes the following steps. In Step 302, the network element (which would be a new, 6G specific network element or 6G SBI Gateway) converts a non-access stratum (NAS) message with NAS format transmitted from a user equipment (UE) into service based interface (SBI) format. In Step 304, the network element converts a SBI message with the SBI format transmitted from a SBI Network into the NAS message with the NAS format. The SBI format may comply with HTTP / 2, HTTP / 3, or OpenAPI serialization. The network element may isolate the SBI Network from a user plane function (UPF) network, where the SBI Network includes at least one core network functions.

[0049] Please refer to the followings for more details.

[0050] It may not be always desirable to transparently deliver IP encapsulated messages from a 6G UE to a 6G NF. Therefore, in certain scenarios an interworking function may be placed at the entry point. We can name such an IWF at the entry point an 6G SBI Gateway. This new gateway can serve at least the following two primary purposes:

[0051] ● Isolate SBI Network from the User Plane (UPF network) .

[0052] ● Convert NAS and any other type of a service message into SBI format (HTTP / 2 or HTTP / 3, OpenAPI serialization) and vice versa.

[0053] It is important to highlight that 6G SBI Gateway is not supposed to implement any of the 6G AMF functionality. Therefore, this is a new and distinct NF. This fact however does not limit co-located implementation freedoms, i.e. any vendor may opt to implement 6G SBI Gateway functionality in a 6G AMF, or any other NF. Logically however these NFs shall execute different functionality.

[0054] Therefore, two alternative signalling data paths over User Plane shall be considered:

[0055] ● Alternative-1-GW. 6G UE -> 6G RAN -> UPF -> 6G SBI Gateway -> SBI Network (6G NFs) . With this alternative, UE can continue sending NAS messages in the legacy NAS format. 6G SBI Gateway shall convert the message into SBI format (novel feature) and deliver this to the target 6G NF. Therefore, with this alternative 6G NAS and 6G SBI can evolve independently.

[0056] ● Alternative-2-Direct. 6G UE -> 6G RAN -> UPF -> SBI Network (6G NFs) . With this alternative, either UE shall become SBI capable, or 6G NFs will need to 'learn'NAS'a nd other service protocols. Therefore, with this alternative either 6G UE or 6G NFs will be impacted. This alternative is out of this invention's scope. Regardless, 6G SBI Gateway functionality is necessary also for this alternative, as this serves as an entry point to SBI Network.

[0057] Our solution adds new Network Function (NF) to the 6G Core network (6G SBI Network) . The main purpose of this new NF (which may be named as 6G SBI Gateway or something else) is to act as (a) an entry point to the 6G SBI Network, (b) to forward messages from a 6G UE to one or more NFs and vice versa and (c) to convert the message encoding as necessary (e.g. convert NAS format into SBI format and vice versa) .

[0058] FIG. 6 is a flowchart of a wireless communication method 400 by a user equipment (UE) according to a fourth embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 6, the wireless communication method 400 includes the following steps. In Step 402, the UE indicates to a network element (e.g., SMF) that signalling protocol data unit (PDU) session establishment is requested, by one of the following: (i) requesting to establish a signalling PDU session for signalling transmission with a signalling PDU session establishment request information element (IE) ; (ii) sending an always-on PDU session indication IE to indicate a PDU session as always-on, wherein an always-on PDU session is a PDU session for which user plane resources have to be activated; and (iii) sending both the signalling PDU session establishment request IE and the always-on PDU session indication IE. In some embodiments, the UE may receive from the network element an accept message in response to the request to accept the signalling PDU session establishment. The accept message may include a data network name (DNN) , which identifies an entry point to a service based interface (SBI) network. In some embodiments, the UE may receive from the network element a reject message in response to the request to reject the signalling PDU session establishment.

[0059] FIG. 7 is a flowchart of a wireless communication method 500 by a network element according to a fifth embodiment of the present application. Referring to FIG. 7, the wireless communication method 500 includes the following steps. In Step 502, the network element is indicated by a user equipment (UE) that signalling protocol data unit (PDU) session establishment is requested, by one of the following: (i) receiving a signalling PDU session establishment request information element (IE) to establish a signalling PDU session for signalling transmission; (ii) receiving an always-on PDU session indication IE to indicate a PDU session as always-on, wherein an always-on PDU session is a PDU session for which user plane resources have to be activated; and (iii) receiving both the signalling PDU session establishment request IE and the always-on PDU session indication IE. Other details of the method 500 may be referred to the method 400 described above and are not repeated herein.

[0060] Please refer to the followings for more details.

[0061] After successful registration with 6G Core network (6GC) , 6G UE shall initiate PDU session establishment procedure by sending PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT REQUEST message to the 6G SMF via 6G AMF (AMF may receive this inside a container and transparently forwards to the SMF) . The 6G UE shall indicate to the SMF that signalling PDU session establishment is requested. This feature may be specified in 6G specifications (e.g., 6G counterparts of the 3GPP TS 23.501 and 3GPP TS 23.502) .

[0062] At the protocol level the above requires the 6G UE shall send either of the following information elements (IEs) to 6G SMF with a PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT REQUEST message:

[0063] ● Alternative-A. 6G UE shall request to activate a signalling PDU session with the "PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT REQUEST message identity" IE. This in turn requires defining a new set of message types for 6GS session management (see the existing 5GS "Message type" IE in clause 9.7 of the 3GPP TS 24.501) . These new, additional message types shall be "Signalling PDU session establishment request" , "Signalling PDU session establishment accept" and "Signalling PDU session establishment reject" . This is a preferred novel.

[0064] ● Alternative-B. 6G UE shall send the existing "Always-on PDU session indication" IE. Note: always-on PDU Session is a PDU Session for which User Plane resources have to be activated. 6G SMF should use this as an indirect indication the 6G UE requests establishment of a signalling PDU session. In some embodiments, it is also noted that always-on PDU Session may be a PDU Session for which User Plane resources have to be activated during every transition from CM-IDLE mode to CM-CONNECTED state.

[0065] ● Alternative-C. 6G UE shall sends both the new value in the "Message type" IE and the existing "Always-on PDU session indication" IE.

[0066] If the 6GC network accepts the request, the 6G SMF shall respond with the PDU SESSION ESTABLISHMENT ACCEPT message. The message contains a specific DNN IE, which identifies entry point (s) to the SBI network. The DNN / APN format for 5GS may be referred defined in the clauses 9. A, 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 of 3GPP TS 23.003. Therefore, this and all other necessary 6G specific DNN formats should be specified by 3GPP CT4 WG.

[0073] A person having ordinary skill in the art understands that each of the units, algorithm, and steps described and disclosed in the embodiments of the present application are realized using electronic hardware or combinations of software for computers and electronic hardware. Whether the functions run in hardware or software depends on the condition of application and design requirement for a technical plan. A person having ordinary skill in the art can use different ways to realize the function for each specific application while such realizations should not go beyond the scope of the present application. It is understood by a person having ordinary skill in the art that he / she can refer to the working processes of the system, device, and unit in the above-mentioned embodiment since the working processes of the above-mentioned system, device, and unit are basically the same. For easy description and simplicity, these working processes will not be detailed.

[0074] It is understood that the disclosed system, device, and method in the embodiments of the present application can be realized with other ways. The above-mentioned embodiments are exemplary only. The division of the units is merely based on logical functions while other divisions exist in realization. It is possible that a plurality of units or components are combined or integrated in another system. It is also possible that some characteristics are omitted or skipped. On the other hand, the displayed or discussed mutual coupling, direct coupling, or communicative coupling operate through some ports, devices, or units whether indirectly or communicatively by ways of electrical, mechanical, or other kinds of forms.

[0075] The units as separating components for explanation are or are not physically separated. The units for display are or are not physical units, that is, located in one place or distributed on a plurality of network units. Some or all of the units are used according to the purposes of the embodiments. Moreover, each of the functional units in each of the embodiments can be integrated in one processing unit, physically independent, or integrated in one processing unit with two or more than two units.

[0076] If the software function unit is realized and used and sold as a product, it can be stored in a readable storage medium in a computer. Based on this understanding, the technical plan proposed by the present application can be essentially or partially realized as the form of a software product. Or, one part of the technical plan beneficial to the conventional technology can be realized as the form of a software product. The software product in the computer is stored in a storage medium, including a plurality of commands for a computational device (such as a personal computer, a server, or a network device) to run all or some of the steps disclosed by the embodiments of the present application. The storage medium includes a USB disk, a mobile hard disk, a read-only memory (ROM) , a random access memory (RAM) , a floppy disk, or other kinds of media capable of storing program codes.

[0077] While the present application has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is understood that the present application is not limited to the disclosed embodiments but is intended to cover various arrangements made without departing from the scope of the broadest interpretation of the appended claims.
