Abstract

Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to a UE, a network entity, a processor for wireless ccommunication, and methods for enhancing CSI report with AI operation. In example method, the UE receives, from a network entity, a channel state information (CSI) report configuration for CSI compression, wherein the CSI report configuration configures one or more bands for CSI reporting and provides identification (ID) of an associated reference model for inference, wherein the reference model is a two-sided model comprising a UE side and a network side. The UE transmits, to the network entity, a CSI report, wherein the CSI report is generated based on the one or more bands for CSI reporting and a reference number provided by the associated reference model indicating a number of CSI for CSI reporting.

[0042] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to some embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. The disclosure described herein can be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below. In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0043] References in the present disclosure to “one embodiment, ” “an example embodiment, ” “an embodiment, ” “some embodiments, ” and the like indicate that the embodiment (s) described may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, but it is not necessary that every embodiment includes the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases do not necessarily refer to the same embodiment (s) . Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in connection with an embodiment, it is submitted that it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to affect such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described.

[0044] It shall be understood that although the terms “first” and “second” or the like may be used herein to describe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another element. For example, a first element could also be termed as a second element, and similarly, a second element could also be termed as a first element, without departing from the scope of embodiments. As used herein, the term “and / or” includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed terms. In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatuses are referred to as “best, ” “lowest, ” “highest, ” “minimum, ” “maximum, ” or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0045] The terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting of embodiments. As used herein, the singular forms “a, ” “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. It will be further understood that the terms “comprises, ” “comprising, ” “has, ” “having, ” “includes” and / or “including, ” when used herein, specify the presence of stated features, elements, components and / or the like, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, elements, components and / or combinations thereof. For example, the term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The use of an expression such as “A and / or B” can mean either “only A” or “only B” or “both A and B. ” Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0046] AI operation significantly facilitates the development of wireless communication. However, some restrictions still limit the further improvement on the CSI report with AI operation.

[0047] One issue relates to sub-band alignment for AI based CSI compression. AI based CSI compression with two-sided model is being specified in Release-20 based on the CSI report configuration framework. A reference model associated with an ID (interchangeably referred to as “pair ID” ) is used for the inference and the ID may be specified ID, and the reference model structure is related with the number of the sub-bands of the CSI for reporting. For example, if the transform-based model structure is adopted, the number of the ‘token’ of the model is determined by a reference number of the sub-bands Nref of the CSI as the inputs. In other words, the UE needs to have Nref sub-band CSIs as part of the model input for inference, where the sub-band CSI as model input may be the raw channel matrix or the eigenvector of the channel matrix. To ensure the UE can provide valid model output for compressed CSI reporting, the UE should strictly prepare channel information corresponding to Nref sub-bands as the model input, however, the reported sub-bands configured in the CSI report configuration for CSI compression may not well matched with Nref of the associated paired ID. The corresponding UE behaviour on preparing the sub-band CSI as the model input to ensure the network (NW) can recover the desired CSI should be specified.

[0048] Another issue relates to rate match on the CSI-RS used for AI based beam prediction. AI based spatial domain beam prediction is specified in 5G NR for the resource overhead reduction, where the UE only needs to perform actual beam measurement on a smaller number of beams (e.g., Set B beams) but can predict the top-K (K=1, 2, …) beams from a larger number of beams (e.g., Set A beams) . For an inference operation, the UE only needs to measure the beams from the beam set B and does not need to measure the beams from beam set A. From the network perspective, it does not need to transmit the CSI-RS resources corresponding to beams from beam set A and the resource elements (REs) used for the CSI-RS resources can be used for physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) to improve the system throughput. However, the UE may also be configured with one or more CSI report configurations for data collection for model training in addition to the CSI report configurations for beam prediction with AI inference. For the CSI report configuration for data collection for model training, the UE is required to measure the beams from both beam set A and beam set B. Thus, it cannot easily say that the REs used for the CSI-RS resources configured in the CSI-RS resource set as Set A associated with the inference report are available for PDSCH transmission.

[0049] Further issue relates to how to report the CSI for the non-applicable CSI report configuration. In the AI related UE capability reporting procedure, the network may configure multiple CSI report configurations with periodic CSI reporting with AI inference for the UE to check whether they are applicable for the UE or not by RRC signalling. After receiving those configurations, the UE shall report whether each of those CSI report configurations is applicable for the UE in an RRC reconfiguration message. It means that before receiving the report from the UE, the network does not know which CSI report configurations are non-applicable for the UE and the network expects to receive periodic CSI report with AI inference according to 5G NR principle. However, for the non-applicable CSI report configurations, the UE cannot provide a valid CSI report. A mechanism is needed for this case to avoid network’s blind decoding for the periodic CSI report.

[0050] In view of the above, the present disclosure provides solutions for sub-band alignment for AI based CSI compression, solutions for the rate matching around the CSI-RS resources corresponding beam Set A by considering both inference and data collection, and solutions for reporting the CSI for the non-applicable CSI report configuration.

[0051] Aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of a wireless communications system. FIG. 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communications system 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The wireless communications system 100 may include one or more network entities 102 (also referred to as network equipment (NE) ) , one or more UEs 104, a core network 106, and a packet data network 108. The wireless communications system 100 may support various radio access technologies. In some implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 4G network, such as an LTE network or an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. In some other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a 5G network, such as an NR network. In other implementations, the wireless communications system 100 may be a combination of a 4G network and a 5G network, or other suitable radio access technology including Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 (Wi-Fi) , IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) , IEEE 802.20. The wireless communications system 100 may support radio access technologies beyond 5G. Additionally, the wireless communications system 100 may support technologies, such as time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , or code division multiple access (CDMA) , etc.

[0056] A UE 104 may also be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs 104 over a communication link 114. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link 114 may be referred to as a sidelink. For example, a UE 104 may support wireless communication directly with another UE 104 over a PC5 interface.

[0057] A network entity 102 may support communications with the core network 106, or with another network entity 102, or both. For example, a network entity 102 may interface with the core network 106 through one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N2, or another network interface) . The network entities 102 may communicate with each other over the backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an X2, Xn, or another network interface) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., between the network entities 102) . In some other implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 106) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or more UEs 104 through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) . As used herein, the term “TRP” refers to a transmission-reception point having an antenna array (with one or more antenna elements) at the network side located at a specific geographical location, which may be used for transmitting and receiving signals to / from the terminal device. In embodiment of the present disclosure, a TRP may refer to Macro Cell, micro cell, an RRH, a relay, a femto node, a pico node, etc.

[0058] In some implementations, a network entity 102 may be configured in a disaggregated architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack physically or logically distributed among two or more network entities 102, such as an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) , or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN) ) . For example, a network entity 102 may include one or more of a central unit (CU) , a distributed unit (DU) , a radio unit (RU) , a RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) (e.g., a Near-Real Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) , a Non-Real Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) ) , a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) system, or any combination thereof.

[0059] An RU may also be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , or a transmission reception point (TRP) . One or more components of the network entities 102 in a disaggregated RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entities 102 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 of a disaggregated RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., a virtual CU (VCU) , a virtual DU (VDU) , a virtual RU (VRU) ) .

[0060] Split of functionality between a CU, a DU, and an RU may be flexible and may support different functionalities depending upon which functions (e.g., network layer functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, radio frequency functions, and any combinations thereof) are performed at a CU, a DU, or an RU. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between a CU and a DU such that the CU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the DU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. In some implementations, the CU may host upper protocol layer (e.g., a layer 3 (L3) , a layer 2 (L2) ) functionality and signalling (e.g., Radio Resource Control (RRC) , service data adaption protocol (SDAP) , Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) ) . The CU may be connected to one or more DUs or RUs, and the one or more DUs or RUs may host lower protocol layers, such as a layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or an L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signalling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160.

[0061] Additionally, or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between a DU and an RU such that the DU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the RU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU may support one or multiple different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs) . In some implementations, a functional split between a CU and a DU, or between a DU and an RU may be within a protocol layer (e.g., some functions for a protocol layer may be performed by one of a CU, a DU, or an RU, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of the CU, the DU, or the RU) .

[0062] A CU may be functionally split further into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. A CU may be connected to one or more DUs via a midhaul communication link (e.g., F1, F1-c, F1-u) , and a DU may be connected to one or more RUs via a fronthaul communication link (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface) . In some implementations, a midhaul communication link or a fronthaul communication link may be implemented in accordance with an interface (e.g., a channel) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 102 that are in communication via such communication links.

[0063] The core network 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management functions (AMF) ) and a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as registration management, mobility management, connection management, access authentication and authorization etc. for the one or more UEs 104 served by the one or more network entities 102 associated with the core network 106.

[0064] The core network 106 may communicate with the packet data network 108 over one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N3, or another network interface) . The packet data network 108 may include an application server 118. In some implementations, one or more UEs 104 may communicate with the application server 118. A UE 104 may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the core network 106 via a network entity 102. The core network 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE 104 and the application server 118 using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE 104 and the core network 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the core network 106) .

[0065] In the wireless communications system 100, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures) . The network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0066] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0067] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0068] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0069] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0070] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0071] Sub-band alignment for AI based CSI compression

[0072] FIG. 2 illustrates a process flow 200 for enhancing CSI report with AI operation in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process flow 200 may involve a UE 201 and a network entity (NW) (e.g. a base station, such as gNB) 202. The process flow 200 may be applied to the wireless communications system 100 with reference to FIG. 1, for example, the UE 201 may be any of UEs 104, and the network entity 202 may be or comprise any of the network entities 102. It would be appreciated that the process flow 200 may be applied to other communication scenarios.

[0073] At 210, the network entity 202 transmits, to the UE 201, a CSI report configuration for CSI compression, such as AI based CSI compression. The CSI report configuration configures one or more bands for CSI reporting and provides identification (ID) of an associated reference model for inference. The reference model is a two-sided model comprising a UE side and a network side. Correspondingly, the UE 201 receives the CSI report configuration, and at 220, the UE 201 transmits, to the network entity, a CSI report. The CSI report is generated based on the one or more bands for CSI reporting and a reference number provided by the associated reference model indicating a number of CSI for CSI reporting. The reference number indicates a predetermined number of CSIs required by the reference model for CSI reporting. Because a CSI is derived for a respective band, the number of CSI corresponds to the number of band.

[0074] As discussed above, basically, the model structure is more related with the number of sub-bands NSB and the number of the CSI-RS ports Nports, and those parameters should be part of the model parameters or be signaled associated with the pair ID. But in the real deployment, the CSI-RS resources may be configured with different number of ports or may have different number of sub-bands with different sub-band size. Thus, the network may also need to indicate whether the CSI-RS for channel measurement may have different number of sub-bands from the indicated for reference model associated with the pair ID. There will a case that actual transmission band for the CSI-RS resources associated with the CSI report configuration is not matched with the required for UE-side model determined by the associated ID. By matching the number of sub-bands or the number of CSIs with the reference number required by the reference model for CSI reporting, the present disclosure provides solutions for sub-band alignment for AI based CSI compression.

[0075] Embodiments for aligning the the number of sub-bands or the number of CSIs with the reference number is described below.

[0076] In some embodiments, in a case that wideband (WB) CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration, the UE 201 may determine a wideband CSI across a whole wideband included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting; determine a repeated wideband CSI by repeating the wideband CSI for the reference number of times; and generate the CSI report based on the repeated wideband CSI.

[0077] For example, when wideband PMI report is configured, a wideband channel information is taken to obtain the compressed CSI. As shown in FIG. 3, the UE 201 can repeat the wideband CSI times to obtain the model input. The CSI may be the channel matrix or the eigenvector H, and indicates that the UE needs {H0, H1, …, H7 } as part of the input for the UE side encoder model for inference, where Hn is the CSI for sub-band n, which may be a raw channel matrix or the eigenvector of the channel matrix for a sub-band.

[0078] In some embodiments, in a case that wideband CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration, the UE 201 may divide a whole wideband included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting into the reference number of virtual sub-bands (V-SB); determine the reference number of CSIs for the reference number of virtual sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0079] For example, when wideband PMI report is configured, the UE 201 may divide the whole wideband for CSI report into new sub-bands to prepare  for inference as illustrated in FIG. 4. At the network side, the network entity 202 may derive the wideband CSI based on the recovered

[0080] In some embodiments, considering non-AI based wideband CSI does not cause larger CSI reporting overhead. And in this case, non-AI based scheme may provide better performance. The UE may not expect to be configured with a CSI report configuration with AI based compressed CSI report with wideband PMI or CQI reporting.

[0081] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band (SB) CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is larger than the reference number, the UE 201 may select the reference number of sub-bands from the sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting; determine the reference number of CSIs for the selected sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0082] For example, the UE 201 may only report the CSI corresponding to the first  or the last indicated sub-bands and the CSI corresponding to the other sub-bands are not reported, as shown in FIG. 5. Alternatively, the UE 201 may select out of the NSB indicated sub-bands for CSI reporting and indicate which sub-bands are selected in the CSI report.

[0083] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is larger than the reference number, the UE 201 may divide the sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting into a first subset of sub-bands and a second subset of sub-bands; obtain the reference number of the sub-bands by combining every predetermined number of sub-bands included in the first subset of sub-bands into a virtual sub-band, such that a sum of a number of the combined virtual sub-bands and a number of sub-bands included in the second subset of sub-bands corresponds to the reference number; and determine the reference number of CSIs for the reference number of the sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0084] For example, the UE may merge every K (for example K=2) sub-bands of the first indicated sub-bands into a virtual sub-band to ensure the number of virtual sub-bands plus the number of remaining sub-bands equals to In the example provided in FIG. 6, the UE may merge the first two sub-bands as a first virtual sub-band, the second two sub-bands as a second virtual sub-band, until the number of the virtual sub-bands plus the number of remaining sub-bands equals to K may be configured by network entity 202 or be determined by the UE 201 and reported as part of the CSI. Alternatively, how to merge the sub-band to satisfy the model input requirement is up to UE implementation but needs to report to the network entity 202 to align the understand between the UE 201 and the network entity 202.

[0085] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is larger than the reference number, the UE 201 may combine the sub-bands included in one or more bands for CSI reporting into a virtual band; divide the virtual band into the reference number of virtual sub-bands; determine the reference number of CSIs for the reference number of virtual sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0086] For example, as shown in FIG. 7, the UE 201 may first merge all the indicated sub-bands as a virtual wideband (V-WB) , divide the virtual wideband into virtual sub-bands, and then take the CSI corresponding to virtual sub-bands as the model input for inference.

[0087] In some embodiments, the UE may not expect in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is larger than the reference number, the UE 201 may not take any action, for example, the UE 201 may not transmit the CSI report to the network entity 202.

[0088] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is less than the reference number, the UE 201 may determine a predetermined number of CSIs for the predetermined number of virtual sub-bands by padding, such that a sum of the predetermined number and the number of bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting corresponds to the reference number; determine the reference number of CSIs with the predetermined number of CSIs and the CSIs for the number of bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0089] For example, the Hn corresponding to the reported sub-band can be placed in the first part, the last part or the middle part the and the Hn corresponding non-reported sub-band can be obtained by padding, such as zero padding or channel interpolation / extension based on the adjacent sub-bands. As shown in FIG. 8, the sub-bands SB1 to SB6 represent the indicated sub-bands for PMI reporting, and the sub-bands SB0 and SB7 shown in dashed line represent the non-indicated sub-bands. In this example, the indicated sub-bands are place in the middle of the model input. Which part of have indicated sub-bands may be determined by UE 201 and is reported as part of the CSI report.

[0090] As another example, if the CSI-RS resources for the CSI reporting has lager bandwidth than the bandwidth of the indicated sub-bands for CSI reporting, then the padding may use Hn corresponding to non-indicated sub-band but the sub-band has actual CSI-RS transmission and the Hn corresponding to the reported sub-bands to obtain  as the model input for inference. As shown in FIG. 9, the sub-bands SB1 and SB6 shown in dashed line between two indicated sub-bands has actual CSI-RS transmission and the corresponding Hn is taken as the padding data. In this case, the UE 201 may need indicated which part of are mapped with the indicated sub-bands in the CSI report, e.g., by a bitmap, to ensure that the network entity 202 can obtain the actual CSI for the desired sub-bands.

[0091] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is less than the reference number, the UE 201 may divide the sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting into a first subset of sub-bands and a second subset of sub-bands; obtain the reference number of the sub-bands by dividing sub-bands included in the first subset of sub-bands into a predetermined number of virtual sub-bands, such that a sum of the predetermined number and a number of sub-bands included in the second subset of sub-bands corresponds to the reference number; and determine the reference number of CSIs for the reference number of the sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0092] For example, the UE 201 can divide some sub-band into multiple mini-sub-bands to obtain multiple Hn for a same sub-band. For example, the UE can divide each of the first indicated sub-band into K virtual sub-bands to have CSIs for inference. K is configured by network entity 202 or be determined by the UE and reported as part of the CSI.

[0093] An example is shown in FIG. 10, where the first and the last indicated sub-bands are divided into two mini-sub-bands to ensure the UE can have number of Hn as the model input for inference. In this case, which sub-band is divided into how many sub-band can be configured by determined by at least one of the following: a predefined principle; configured by network entity 202 along with pair ID; and determined by the UE implementation but the UE 201 needs to report division scheme in the CSI report.

[0094] In some embodiments, in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is less than the reference number, the UE 201 may combine the sub-bands included in one or more bands for CSI reporting into a virtual band; divide the virtual band into the reference number of virtual sub-bands; determine the reference number of CSIs for the reference number of virtual sub-bands; and generate the CSI report based on the reference number of CSIs.

[0095] For example, as shown in FIG. 11, the UE 201 may first merge all the indicated sub-bands as a virtual wideband, divide the virtual wideband into virtual sub-bands, and then take the CSI corresponding to virtual sub-bands as the model input for inference.

[0096] In some embodiments, the UE may not expect in a case that sub-band CSI reporting is configured for the CSI report configuration and a number of sub-bands included in the one or more bands for CSI reporting is less than the reference number, the UE 201 may not take any action, for example, the UE 201 may not transmit the CSI report to the network entity 202.

[0097] Rate matching around the CSI-RS resources by considering both inference and data collection

[0098] FIG. 12 illustrates a process flow 1200 for enhancing CSI report with AI operation in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process flow 1200 may involve a UE 1201 and a network entity (NW) (e.g. a base station, such as gNB) 1202. The process flow 1200 may be applied to the wireless communications system 100 with reference to FIG. 1, for example, the UE 1201 may be any of UEs 104, and the network entity 1202 may be or comprise any of the network entities 102. It would be appreciated that the process flow 1200 may be applied to other communication scenarios.

[0099] At 1210, the network entity 1202 transmits, to the UE 1201, a first channel state information (CSI) report configuration for inference and a second CSI report configuration for data collection. Each of the first and second CSI report configurations is associated with a first beam set for beam measurement and a second beam set for beam prediction. After receiving the first and second CSI report configurations, at 1220, the UE 1201, in response to channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) resources in a CSI-RS resource set not being configured as the first or second beam set of the second CSI report configuration, make one or more resource elements associated with the CSI-RS resources available for physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) resource mapping. The CSI-RS resources are configured as the second beam set of the first CSI report configuration. For example, the resource elements may be time and frequency resources.

[0100] As discussed above, AI based spatial domain beam prediction is specified in 5G NR for the resource overhead reduction, where the UE only needs to perform actual beam measurement on a smaller number of beams (e.g., Set B beams) but can predict the top-K beams from a larger number of beams (e.g., Set A beams) . For an inference operation, the UE only needs to measure the beams from the beam set B and does not need to measure the beams from beam set A. From the network perspective, it does not need to transmit the CSI-RS resources corresponding to beams from beam set A and the corresponding resources can be used for PDSCH to improve the system throughput.

[0101] However, the UE may also be configured with one or more CSI report configurations for data collection for model training in addition to the CSI report configurations for beam prediction with AI inference. For the CSI report configuration for data collection for model training, the UE is required to measure the beams from both beam set A and beam set B.

[0102] To avoid the ambiguity on the UE behavior on measurement on the prediction beam set, the following example options can be considered:

[0103] Option 1: The prediction beam set A associated with a CSI report configuration for inference may contain regular RS resources as in 5G NR. When a periodic or semi-persistent CSI-RS resource set is associated with a CSI report configuration as prediction beam set A and it is not associated with another CSI report configuration for data collection or is associated with another CSI report configuration for data collection but the CSI report configuration is released or be deactivated, the UE 1201 may not measure those CSI-RS resources, and the corresponding resources may be available for the PDSCH resource mapping.

[0104] Option 2: The prediction beam set A associated with a CSI report configuration for inference may contain virtual RS resources. The virtual beam set may contain a list of virtual resources each of which is associated with or be mapped to a resource contained in a resource set configured as the prediction beam set A for a CSI report configuration for data collection. The virtual beam set, and the prediction beam set A may be associated with a same associated ID. The network entity 1202 may not transmit the virtual resources, and the UE 1201 may not be required to receive and measure the virtual resources. The virtual resources in the virtual beam set may only has a beam ID and may not have actual time and frequency domain resource configurations.

[0105] In addition, there is another use case of PMI prediction with less CSI-RS ports.

[0106] With the continuous increase in the number of base station (BS) antennas, the CSI-RS resource overhead for downlink (DL) CSI acquisition is increased as well if we use legacy CSI acquisition mechanism where each antenna port occupies an orthogonal resource for CSI calculation. By leveraging AI’s predictive power, the UE may only measure part of the antenna ports and then predict the CSI corresponding to all the antenna ports with AI inference.

[0107] For example, if a BS equipped with 64 antenna ports, where each antenna ports may be virtualized by one or more antenna elements, CSI-RS resources with 64 ports are needed for CSI acquisition with non-AI based scheme. By adopting AI based scheme, the UE only needs to measure the CSI-RS on antenna port {0, 4, 8, 12, 19, 23, 27, 31, 32, 36, 40, 44, 51, 55, 59, 63} as illustrated in FIG. 13. It means that the BS does not need to send the CSI-RS resource on the other antenna ports and the corresponding resources can be used for the data transmission to improve the system throughput.

[0108] In this case, the UE can be configured one or more CSI report configurations for the CSI report with AI inference, where one or more CSI-RS resources each with M=64 ports are associated with the CSI report configure for the PMI calculation. But the UE is further indicated to only measure N=16 out of the M=64 ports to obtain the model input, e.g., by using a M-bitlength bitmap. If the CSI-RS resource is not associated with another ongoing CSI report configuration for data collection, the REs used for the unmeasured CSI-RS ports are available for PDSCH resource mapping.

[0109] Reporting the CSI for the non-applicable CSI report configuration

[0110] FIG. 14 illustrates a process flow 1400 for enhancing CSI report with AI operation in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process flow 1400 may involve a UE 1401 and a network entity (NW) (e.g. a base station, such as gNB) 1402. The process flow 1400 may be applied to the wireless communications system 100 with reference to FIG. 1, for example, the UE 1401 may be any of UEs 104, and the network entity 1402 may be or comprise any of the network entities 102. It would be appreciated that the process flow 1400 may be applied to other communication scenarios.

[0111] At 1410, the network entity 1402 transmits, to the UE 1401, a channel state information (CSI) report configuration in a radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message. The CSI report configuration includes one or more parameters for inference. Correspondingly, the UE 1401 receives the CSI report configuration, and transmits to the network entity 1402 a periodic CSI report configured by the CSI report configuration and indicating applicability of UE for the CSI report configuration before receiving applicability of the CSI report configuration for the UE in an RRC reconfiguration complete message.

[0112] As discussed above, in the AI related UE capability reporting procedure, the network may configure multiple CSI report configurations with periodic CSI reporting with AI inference for the UE to check whether they are applicable for the UE or not by RRC signalling (corresponds to 1530 of FIG. 15) . After receiving those configurations, the UE shall report whether each of those CSI report configurations is applicable for the UE in a RRC reconfiguration message (corresponds to 1540 of FIG. 15) . The present disclosure provides a mechanism to avoid network’s blind decoding for the periodic CSI report by transmitting to the network entity 1402 a periodic CSI report configured by the CSI report configuration and indicating applicability of UE for the CSI report configuration before receiving applicability of the CSI report configuration for the UE in an RRC reconfiguration complete message.

[0113] More particularly, FIG. 15 illustrates a process flow for reporting the UE capability on the supported AI features and the applicable functionality in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0114] As shown in FIG. 15, at 1510, the network entity 1402 sends a UE capability enquiry message to initiate the procedure to the UE 1401 reporting its AI supported functionalities.

[0115] After receiving the UE capability enquiry message, at 1520, the UE 1401 sends a UE capability information message to the network entity 1402, containing supported functionalities at the UE side.

[0116] At 1530, the network entity 1402 sends the RRC reconfiguration message to the UE 1401. The UE 1401 is allowed to do UE assist information (UAI) reporting via the OtherConfig field in the RRC reconfiguration message. In some embodiments, the content of the RRC reconfiguration message may include two options. In option A, one or more CSI report configuration for inference configuration, where each CSI report configuration contains all the parameters for AI inference. Alternatively, in option B, the RRC reconfiguration message includes one set or multiple CSI report configuration, where each CSI report configuration only contains inference related parameters for applicability report only.

[0117] At 1540, the UE 1401 reports applicability for all the configured CSI report configuration at 1530. If the option A is adopted at 1530, applicable aperiodic CSI Report and semi-persistent CSI report can be activated / triggered by the network entity 1402 after the applicability reported. In addition, applicable periodic CSI report is considered as activated only if the applicability of the corresponding CSI report configuration is reported in an RRC reconfiguration complete message.

[0118] At 1550, if option B is adopted at 1530, the network entity 1402 configures inference configuration to UE 1401 after applicable functionality reporting, if inference configuration based on supported functionality is not provided at 1530 (i.e. inference configuration is provided at 1550) .

[0119] Alternatively, if option A is adopted at 1530, i.e., inference configuration based on supported functionality is provided at 1530, it is up to network implementation whether to provide an updated configuration or not.

[0120] At 1560, the network entity 1402 can trigger or activate inferences or monitoring that are applicable for the UE 1401.

[0121] According to the RAN1 understanding, upon reception of RRC Reconfiguration message, UE’s RRC layer immediately submits all the configuration to lower layer. It means that if CSI report configurations for inference with periodic CSI reporting are provided at 1530, they should be applied after 1530, and the UE is expected to report the corresponding CSI in the corresponding reporting occasions. However, if the inference configuration is non-applicable, the UE cannot provide valid inference report before the corresponding CSI report configuration becomes applicable. After 1540, the network entity 1402 is aware that some of the inference configurations are not applicable and may release them in 1550 or the UE can autonomously release them after 1540. To avoid the network entity 1402 blind decoding for the periodic CSI between1530 and 1540, the UE can contain an invalid indication in the corresponding CSI.

[0122] In some embodiments, the periodic CSI report includes a field to indicate whether a valid CSI is reported in the periodic CSI report, wherein the field is an existing CSI field or a new introduced field. In some embodiments, the periodic CSI report includes a field with all zero value or all the CSI fields are set as zero value to indicate that the CSI report configuration is not applicable and no valid CSI is carried in the CSI report. In addition, in a case that a channel quality indicator (CQI) is configured to be included for CSI reporting, the periodic CSI report includes a CQI codepoint with a lowest CQI index to indicate that the CSI report configuration is not applicable.

[0123] For example, for the CSI report configuration for periodic beam report, e.g., the reportQuantity is set to ‘p-CRI’ (predicted CSI-RS resource indicator) , ‘p-SSBRI’ (predicted SSBRI resource indicator) , ‘p-CRI-RSRP’ (predicted CSI-RS resource indicator and reference signal received power) , ‘p-SSBRI-RSRP’ (predicted SSBRI resource indicator and reference signal received power) , a dedicated field with 1-bit is contained in the CSI report for such indication. This field only included in the periodic CSI report before 1540. After the UE 1401 indicates an applicability CSI report configuration in 1540, the UE 1401 shall not report the non-applicable periodic CSI report with AI inference. Alternatively, the UE 1401 reports all zero values for all the uplink control information (UCI) fields to indicate that the corresponding CSI report configuration is not applicable. After the UE 1401 indicates an applicability CSI report configuration at 1540, the UE 1401 shall not report the non-applicable periodic CSI report with AI inference.

[0124] As another example, for the CSI report configuration for AI based CSI report other than beam report, e.g., the reportQuantity is set to ‘p-CRI’ , ‘p-SSBRI’ , ‘p-CRI-RSRP’ , ‘p-SSBRI-RSRP’ , a dedicated field with 1-bit is contained in the CSI report for such indication. This field only included in the periodic CSI report before 1540. After the UE 1401 indicates an applicability CSI report configuration at 1540, the UE shall not report the non-applicable periodic CSI report with AI inference. Alternatively, the UE 1401 reports a CQI codepoint with the lowest CQI index to indicate that the CSI report configuration is non-applicable. If CQI for more than one TBs are reported, the WB CQI for the first transmission block (TB) is used for such indication. After the UE 1401 indicates an applicability CSI report configuration at 1540, the UE 1401 shall not report the non-applicable periodic CSI report with AI inference. Alternatively, the UE 1401 reports all zero values for all the UCI fields to indicate that the corresponding CSI report configuration is not applicable

[0125] Further, in some embodiments, the periodic CSI corresponding to the non-applicable CSI report configuration is only transmitted in the first CSI report occasion after 1530.

[0126] FIG. 16 illustrates an example of a device that is suitable for implementing some embodiments of the present disclosure. The device 1600 may be an example of a UE 104 or network entity 102 as described herein. The device 1600 may support wireless communication with one or more network entities 102, UEs 104, or any combination thereof. The device 1600 may include components for bi-directional communications including components for transmitting and receiving communications, such as a processor 1602, a memory 1604, a transceiver 1606, and, optionally, an I / O controller 1608. These components may be in electronic communication or otherwise coupled (e.g., operatively, communicatively, functionally, electronically, electrically) via one or more interfaces (e.g., buses) .

[0127] The processor 1602, the memory 1604, the transceiver 1606, or various combinations thereof or various components thereof may be examples of means for performing various aspects of the present disclosure as described herein. For example, the processor 1602, the memory 1604, the transceiver 1606, or various combinations or components thereof may support a method for performing one or more of the operations described herein.

[0128] In some implementations, the processor 1602, the memory 1604, the transceiver 1606, or various combinations or components thereof may be implemented in hardware (e.g., in communications management circuitry) . The hardware may include a processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, a discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof configured as or otherwise supporting a means for performing the functions described in the present disclosure. In some implementations, the processor 1602 and the memory 1604 coupled with the processor 1602 may be configured to perform one or more of the functions described herein (e.g., executing, by the processor 1602, instructions stored in the memory 1604) .

[0129] For example, the processor 1602 may support wireless communication at the device 1600 in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The device 1600 may be an example of a UE 104. In this case, the processor 1602 may be configured to operable to support means for receiving, from a network entity, a channel state information (CSI) report configuration for CSI compression, wherein the CSI report configuration configures one or more bands for CSI reporting and provides identification (ID) of an associated reference model for inference, wherein the reference model is a two-sided model comprising a UE side and a network side; and means for transmitting, to the network entity, a CSI report, wherein the CSI report is generated based on the one or more bands for CSI reporting and a reference number provided by the associated reference model indicating a number of CSI for CSI reporting.

[0130] For example, the processor 1602 may support wireless communication at the device 1600 in accordance with examples as disclosed herein. The device 1600 may be an example of a network entity 102. In this case, the processor 1602 may be configured to operable to support means for transmitting, to a user equipment (UE) , a channel state information (CSI) report configuration for CSI compression, wherein the CSI report configuration configures one or more bands for CSI reporting and provides identification (ID) of an associated reference model for inference, wherein the reference model is a two-sided model comprising a UE side and a network side; and means for receiving, from the UE, a CSI report, wherein the CSI report is generated based on the one or more bands for CSI reporting and a reference number provided by the associated reference model indicating a number of CSI for CSI reporting.
