[0002] Electrical connectors (e.g., in vehicles and other applications) often feature housings that protect the internal terminals and facilitate secure connections. In many cases, these housings are designed to couple with other housings (e.g., a male and female side of the connection), allowing for modular connections between different parts of a system. This capability ensures proper alignment, environmental sealing, and mechanical stability.
[0003] However, existing housings for electrical connectors may not include adequate structural elements to ensure a proper mechanical and / or electrical coupling between corresponding connector assemblies. Additionally, existing systems that attempt to ensure proper mechanical and / or electrical coupling are often susceptible to breakage, and they may not properly communicate the connection position information to a user.
[0004] Therefore, a need exists for more reliable and robust electrical connector assemblies.SUMMARY
[0005] According to one implementation, a connector assembly is disclosed. The connector assembly is movable between a pre-lock position and a fully-locked position. The connector assembly includes a housing for a first connector assembly that is couplable to a second connector assembly. The housing includes at least one side wall arranged along a longitudinal axis. The housing further includes a lock box extending from a first side of the at least one side wall. The lock box defines a CPA receiver. The housing further includes at least one snap-fit projection extending from the first side of the at least one side wall within the CPA receiver. The housing further includes a first cover extending across a portion of the CPA receiver. The housing further includes a second cover extending from a second side of the at least one side wall. The second cover defines a second CPA receiver. The connector assembly further includes a connector position assurance (CPA) device including a substantially cylindrical main body extending around aMCC Docket No. 11694-117WO1longitudinal axis. The CPA device includes a locking tab extending from a first side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. The locking tab includes at least one snap-fit clip extending from a distal end of thereof. The CPA device further includes a first readable indicia disposed on a radially outward portion of the locking tab. The CPA device further includes an indicator tab extending from a second side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis. A second readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the indicator tab. In the pre-lock position, the locking tab is disposed within the CPA receiver of the lock box and the first cover of the housing obscures a portion of the first readable indicia, and the indicator tab of the CPA device is disposed within the second CPA receiver such that the second cover of the housing obscures a portion of the second readable indicia. In the fully-locked position, the CPA device is moved axially with respect to the housing such that the first readable indicia and the second readable indicia are exposed to be readable.

[0009] In some implementations, in the fully-locked position, the at least one snap-fit clip of the locking tab of the CPA device engages with the snap-fit projection of the housing to secure the CPA device within the CPA receiver of the lock box.

The figures illustrate exemplary implementations in detail and the present disclosure is not limited to the details or methodology set forth in the description or illustrated in the figures. The terminology used herein is for the purpose of description only and should not be regarded as limiting.
[0084] Referring to the figures generally, the various implementations disclosed herein relate to systems, apparatuses, devices, and methods for a connector assembly. For example, a connector assembly may include an insulative housing and a conductive terminal. A connector assembly may further include a connection position assurance (CPA) device. The CPA device is couplable to the housing of the connector assembly.

First connector assembly 10 is a two-barcode system that is movable between a pre-lock position and a fully-locked position to respectively obscure or reveal two readable indicia. The at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 is disposed within the CPA receiver 140. As shown in FIGS. 1, 3, and 6, the housing 100 further includes the first cover 160 extending across a portion of the CPA receiver 140. In the implementation of the housing 100 shown in FIGS. 1-7, the at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 and the first cover 160 are integrally formed with each other (see e.g., FIG. 6). However, in other implementations, the snap-fit protrusion may extend from the at least one side wall independently from the first cover.

The at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 includes a first surface 159 on a side of the at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 closer to the first opening 142. The first surface 159 of the at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 is configured to engage with a portion of the CPA device 200 and / or the female-side housing of the female connector assembly, as further described herein.
[0103] The at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 may be cantilevered from the first and second connections 152, 154 such that the at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 is bendable in a direction towards and / or away from the first side 106 of the at least one side wall 110. The at least one snap-fit protrusion 150 may include one or more rounded or chamfered edges facilitating engagement with the CPA device 200 and / or the female-side housing of the female connector assembly, as further described herein.

The second portions of the first arm 156 and the second arm 158 each extend at an angle an angle greater than 0 degrees (e.g., greater than 0 degrees to less than or equal to 15 degrees) relative to the first portions of the first arm 156 and the second arm 158, respectively. The second portions of the first arm 156 and the second arm 158 extend to a second end of the respective first arm 156 and second arm 158 opposite from the first ends of the first portions. [0105] The first cover 160 is coupled to and extends between each of the second end of the first arm 156 and the second end of the second arm 158 in a direction parallel to the second direction. The first cover 160 and the second ends of the arms 156, 158 are disposed within the CPA receiver 140, but the first cover 160 and the second ends of the arms 156, 158 are not covered by the outer wall 126 of the lock box 120. The outer wall 126 defines an opening 162 aligned with the first cover 160 and a portion of the arms 156, 158. Thus, the first cover 160 is visible from outside the lock box 120 in a direction parallel to the first direction (e.g., facing the first side 106 of the at least one side wall 110).

1. A connector assembly movable between a pre-lock position and a fully-locked position, the connector assembly comprising:a housing for a first connector assembly that is couplable to a second connector assembly, the housing comprising:at least one side wall arranged along a longitudinal axis;a lock box extending from a first side of the at least one side wall, the lock box defining a CPA receiver;at least one snap-fit projection extending from the first side of the at least one side wall within the CPA receiver;a first cover extending across a portion of the CPA receiver; anda second cover extending from a second side of the at least one side wall, the second cover defining a second CPA receiver;a connector position assurance (CPA) device comprising:a substantially cylindrical main body extending around a longitudinal axis; a locking tab extending from a first side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, the locking tab comprising at least one snap-fit clip extending from a distal end of thereof;a first readable indicia disposed on a radially outward portion of the locking tab; andan indicator tab extending from a second side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, wherein a second readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the indicator tab;wherein, in the pre-lock position, the locking tab is disposed within the CPA receiver of the lock box and the first cover of the housing obscures a portion of the first readable indicia, and the indicator tab of the CPA device is disposed within the second CPA receiver such that the second cover of the housing obscures a portion of the second readable indicia, and wherein, in the fully-locked position, the CPA device is moved axially with respect to the housing such that the first readable indicia and the second readable indicia are exposed to be readable.
2. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the indicator tab of the CPA device is disposed on an opposite side of the main body from the locking tab.MCC Docket No. 11694-117WO13. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the indicator tab is a first indicator tab, the CPA device further comprising:a second indicator tab extending from a third side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, wherein a third readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the second indicator tab,wherein the housing further comprises a third cover extending from a third side of the at least one side wall to define a third CPA receiver, andwherein, in the pre-locked position, the second indicator tab of the CPA device is disposed within the third CPA receiver such that the third cover obscures a portion of the third readable indicia and, in the fully-lock position, the third readable indicia is exposed.
4. The connector assembly of claim 3, wherein the CPA device further comprises a third indicator tab extending from a fourth side of the main body in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, wherein a fourth readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the third indicator tab, andwherein the housing further comprises a fourth cover extending from a fourth side of the at least one side wall to define a fourth CPA receiver,wherein, in the pre-lock position, the third indicator tab of the CPA device is disposed within the fourth CPA receiver such that the fourth cover obscures a portion of the fourth readable indicia and, in the fully-locked position, the fourth readable indicia is exposed.
5. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein, in the fully-locked position, the at least one snap-fit clip of the locking tab of the CPA device engages with the snap-fit projection of the housing to secure the CPA device within the CPA receiver of the lock box.
6. The connector assembly of claim 5, wherein, in the fully-locked position, the at least one snap-fit clip of the locking tab is configured to further engage with the second connector assembly to secure the a second connector assembly to the first connector assembly.
7. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the CPA device further comprises at least one lateral clip extending along a side of the locking tab, wherein, in the fully-locked position, the at least one lateral clip engages with a lateral retainer defined within the CPA receiver of the lock box to secure the CPA device to the housing.MCC Docket No. 11694-117WO18. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the CPA device further comprises a flange extending radially outwardly from the main body, the flange providing at least one surface to facilitate moving the CPA device relative to the housing between the pre-lock position and the fully-locked position.

The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the at least one side wall of the housing further comprises at least one axial rib protruding from an outer surface of the at least one side wall, wherein the CPA device further comprises at least one axial slot alignable with the at least one axial rib of the housing to properly align the CPA device on the housing.
10. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the main body of the CPA device defines at least one drain hole.
11. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the at least one side wall of the housing defines a terminal receiver.
12. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the first cover extending across the CPA receiver is a part of the lock box.
13. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein the at least one snap-fit clip extends radially inward from the distal end of the locking tab.
14. A connector position assurance (CPA) device comprising:a main body having a substantially cylindrical shape about a central axis, the main body defining a central opening;a locking tab extending from a first side of the main body in a direction parallel to the central axis, the locking tab including a snap-fit protrusion extending radially inward from a distal end of the locking tab;a first readable indicia disposed on a radially outward portion of the locking tab; an indicator tab extending from a second side of the main body in a direction parallel to the central axis; anda second readable indicia disposed on a radially outward portion of the indicator tab,MCC Docket No. 11694-117WO1wherein the CPA device is configured to lock into a portion of a first connector housing and secure the first connector housing to a second connector housing.
15. The CPA device of claim 14, wherein the first side of the main body is diametrically opposed to the second side of the main body.
16. The CPA device of claim 14, wherein the first side of the main body is spaced apart 180 degrees from the second side of the main body with respect to the central axis.
17. The CPA device of claim 14, wherein the first side of the main body is spaced apart 90 degrees from the second side of the main body with respect to the central axis.
18. The CPA device of claim 14, wherein the first readable indicia and the second readable indicia are each configured to be obscured in a pre-lock position and exposed in a fully locked potion with respect to the first connector housing.
19. The CPA device of claim 14, wherein the indicator tab is a first indicator tab, the CPA device further comprising a second indicator tab extending from a third side of the main body in a direction parallel to the central axis, wherein a third readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the second indicator tab.
20. The CPA device of claim 19, further comprising a third indicator tab extending from a fourth side of the main body in a direction parallel to the central axis, wherein a fourth readable indicia is disposed on a radially outward portion of the third indicator tab.
21. The CPA device of claim 19, wherein the second side of the main body including the first indicator tab is diametrically opposed to the first side of the main body that includes the locking tab, wherein the third side of the main body including the second indicator tab is disposed between the first side and the second side of the main body.

The CPA device of claim 14, further comprising a flange extending radially outward from the main body, the flange comprising at least one surface to facilitate movement of the CPA device with respect to the first connector housing.MCC Docket No. 11694-117WO123.
