Abstract

An attraction may include a track section extending at a track angle along a guest travel direction, and one or more set elements positioned adjacent the track section, the set elements at a non-perpendicular angle to the guest travel direction to create an illusion of elevation change different than the track angle. The track section may define a first vanishing point from a guest perspective. The set elements may define a second vanishing point from the guest perspective, the second vanishing point different than the first vanishing point. The second vanishing point may be above or below the first vanishing point. The first vanishing point may be on a horizon line, and the second vanishing point may be below the horizon line to create an illusion of gaining elevation along the track section. The attraction may include a ride vehicle configured to carry the guest along the track section.

[0003] Guests are expecting more and more thrills andL‘how did they do that"’ moments in rides and attractions, even expecting a ride vehicle to perform actions it cannot do. At the same time, there is a desire to simplify attractions to be more cost effective. Also, there is a need to fit new attractions to existing and / or available space and buildings. Therefore, a need exists for systems and methods that address the concerns above or at least offers an alternative to existing solutions.BRIEF SUMMARY

[0004] In one example, an attraction includes a track section extending at a track angle along a guest travel direction, and one or more set elements positioned adjacent the track section, the one or more set elements at a non-perpendicular angle to the guest travel direction to create an illusion of elevation change different than the track angle.

[0020] The disclosed systems provide an elevation change illusion through set design without moving mechanical parts or video projection and media. Using geometry' and forced perspectives, an attraction can provide an illusion of elevation change. For example, through set design by angling set elements relative to a track section, guests or riders may feel like they are going up or down within the set to a greater degree than reality. For example, the disclosed systems may provide a realistic sensation of going up or down stairs, or traversing different levels, in a flat and level show building. The illusion relies upon forcing the perspective of the rider or guest to a different level or point than the track, such as via angling set elements relative to the track direction. For example, an illusion of elevation change may be created by different vanishing points from the perspective of the rider or guest, with one vanishing point defined by the track section and another vanishing point created by the angled set elements.

[0021] FIG. 1 illustrates an example attraction 100. The attraction 100 includes a track section 102 and a set 104 adjacent the track section 102. In examples, the attraction 100 includes a ride vehicle 108 positioned on, coupled to, or otherwise engaged with the 34927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01track section 102. The ride vehicle 108 may be configured to carry' a guest 112 or multiple guests 112 (e.g.. one or more passengers or guests) along the track section 102. such as through the attraction 100. With additional reference to FIG. 2, the ride vehicle 108 may move along or about any of the X, Y, or Z-axes. For example, the ride vehicle 108 may be configured to translate along any combination of the X, Y, or Z-axes.Additionally, or alternatively, the ride vehicle 108 may be configured to roll, pitch, or yaw. or any combination thereof. In some examples, the ride vehicle 108 may have six degrees of freedom or less than 6 degrees of freedom. The ride vehicle 108 may be a train, roller coaster, tracked vehicle, trackless vehicle, free range vehicle, or another vehicle. Referring to FIG. 1, the ride vehicle 108 may include a cockpit 114 to house or receive the one or more guests 112. The ride vehicle 108 may have different configurations based on applicable restrictions, ride or attraction theme, desired guest experience, or the like. For example, the ride vehicle 108 may include an open or closed cockpit 114, be sized and shaped to mimic a desired vehicle or theme (e.g., air vehicle, water vehicle, ground vehicle, movie or show vehicle, etc.), be realistic or unrealistic (e.g.. imaginary), etc., but generally be configured to receive one or more guests 112. For instance, the cockpit 114 may be configured as a compartment that includes a seating area to allow one or more guests to sit within the ride vehicle 108. Additionally, or alternatively, the cockpit 114 or compartment may include a standing or other position configuration for guests. The ride vehicle 108 may roll, slide, or otherwise traverse along the track section 102, such as via wheels, sliders, or other components. The ride vehicle 108 may move along the track section 102 at a regular pace or an irregular pace.

[0022] In other examples, the ride vehicle 108 is omitted from the attraction 100. and the one or more guests 112 may move along the track section 102 in other manners. For example, the track section 102 may be defined by an escalator, a moving walkway, or other conveyor mechanism to transport guests 112 through the set 104. In another examples, the track section 102 may define a floor or other ground surface on which the guests 112 may walk through the set 104. The attraction 100 may be configured to provide an immersive guest experience. For example, the attraction 100 may be a ride of a theme park, an amusement park, a waterpark, etc. In another example, the attraction 100 may be part of an exhibition, a tourist attraction, or other experience.

[0023] The track section 102 may extend along a portion or the entirety of the attraction 100. For example, the track section 102 may be defined along a segment of the attraction 44927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01100, such as at a beginning portion, at an end portion, or in a middle portion of the attraction 100. The track section 102 may be a unique section of track within the attraction 100, or the track section 102 may be similar to other portions of the track. For example, the track section 102 may extend along the same angle or surface as other portions of the track. With additional reference to FIG. 2, the track section 102 may extend at a track angle 122 along a guest travel direction 146. The track angle 122 may be relative to horizontal or vertical. For example, the track section 102 may extend horizontally or generally horizontally, such as along a flat floor or surface. In one example, the track section 102 is a flat or generally flat track section (e.g., parallel to the horizon). In such examples, the guest travel direction 146 may be horizontal or flat (e.g., parallel to the horizon). In other examples, the track section 102 may extend upwardly or downwardly, such as having a positive or negative slope. The track angle 122 may be chosen for a desired ride effect or other purpose. For example, the track angle 122 may be horizontal for reduced track complexity' and structure, or may be angled up or down to provide a desired drop or rise for the ride vehicle 108.

[0024] Referring to FIG. 1, the set 104 may be defined by one or more set elements 126. The set elements 126 may be positioned adjacent the track section 102. For example, the set elements 126 may be positioned on opposite sides of the track section 102, such that the track section 102 extends through the set 104 for an immersive experience. The set elements 126 on opposite sides of the track section 102 may be connected, such as overhead via various structures, to tie the elements together for an immersive experience. The set elements 126 may include steps, railings, walls, facades, balconies, overhangs, openings, or the like to simulate a desired environment along the track section 102. For example, the set elements 126 may simulate a scene from a movie or show, such as part of a desired theme or storyline for the attraction 100.

[0025] In one example, the set 104 may be static with only the ride vehicle 108 moving along the track section 102. For example, the set 104 may include limited to no moving parts or sections. In another example, the attraction 100 may include active elements configured to provide secondary aspects for an immersive experience. As one example, the active elements may include wind generators, sound generators, smell generators, video projectors, or other elements to emphasize an effect. For instance, a video projection may change as the ride vehicle 108 moves along the track section 102, providing an illusion that set elements 126 are changing, such as to force the perspective 54927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01of the guest 112. As another example, portions or sections of the set 104 may move, such as based on the position of the ride vehicle 108 along the track section 102. For example, one or more set elements 126 may tilt or change in dimension to emphasize an effect. The emphasized effect of the active elements may include a perceived change in elevation, a perceived change in speed, an illusion for traversing a space in a direction that the guest 112 is not moving, or the like.

[0026] With additional reference to FIG. 2, the set elements 126 may be positioned to create an illusion for traversing a space in a direction that the guest 112 is not moving. In one example, the set elements 126 may be angled relative to the track angle 122 to create an illusion of elevation change different than the track angle 122. For example, the set elements 126 may be at anon-perpendicular angle to the guest travel direction 146 to create an illusion of elevation change different than the track angle 122. In another example, the set elements 126 may be non-perpendicular to the flat track section 102. In this manner, the set elements 126 may define a visual reference different than the track section 102 to simulate elevation change through the attraction 100, the simulated elevation change being different than the actual elevation change along the track section 102. For example, the set elements 126 may be positioned or built at an angle to trick the guest 112 into believing the ride vehicle 108 is gaining or loosing elevation along the track section 102. whereas, in reality, the track section 102 is extending at a different angle or is horizontal. In the example of FIG. 2, the set elements 126 may be angled relative to a horizontal track section 102, although other configurations are contemplated. In addition to the angled set elements 126, the ride vehicle 108 may yaw, pitch, or roll to further emphasize the illusion of elevation change.

[0027] As one example, set elements 126 that are expected to be horizontal (e.g., floors, lower edges of windows and doors, tops of stairs, beams, roof overhangs, etc.;“horizontal” elements) may be built to extend at a non-horizontal angle. Similarly, set elements 126 that are expected to be vertical (e.g., posts, side edges of window s and doors, stair risers, balusters, etc.; “vertical” elements) may be built to extend at a nonvertical angle. In this manner, “horizontal” elements may be angled up or down relative to horizontal, and “vertical” elements may be angled away from vertical. In other words, the set 104 may be tilted, such that the typical vertical-horizontal reference frame for the guest 112 as defined by the “horizontal” and “vertical” elements is skewed from reality.64927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01

[0028] The illusion of elevation change may be created by different vanishing points from the perspective of the guest 112. For example, with reference to FIGS. 3-4, the track section 102 may define a first vanishing point 132 from the perspective of the guest 112, and the set elements 126 may define a second vanishing point 134 from the perspective of the guest 112. The first vanishing point 132 may be the point at which a projection of the track section 102 converges in the perspective of the guest 112. For example, the first vanishing point 132 may be defined by first converging parallel lines 136 at an interface between the track section 102 and the set elements 126. The first converging parallel lines 136 may be horizontal, such as when the track section 102 is horizontal. In another example, the first vanishing point 132 may be defined by different converging lines of the track section 102.

[0029] The second vanishing point 134 may be the point at which a projection of the set elements 126 appears to converge in the perspective of the guest 112. In one example, the second vanishing point 134 may be the point at which a projection of the “horizontal” elements converges in the perspective of the guest 112. For example, the set elements 126 may include a building facade 138 having multiple stories (e.g., a first story 140A and a second story 140B). The second vanishing point 134 may be defined by¬ second converging parallel lines 142 defined by the “horizontal” set elements 126.Referring to FIG. 2. the multiple stories may be angled relative to the track section 102 (e.g., relative to horizontal in one example) to define the second vanishing point 134. In some examples, the set elements 126 may include stair elements 144 positioned adjacent the track section 102. The stair elements 144 may include steps, risers, balusters, handrails, landings, posts, or any combination thereof. The stair elements 144 may be angled relative to the track section 102 (e.g., relative to horizontal in one example) to define the second vanishing point 134. Such examples are illustrative, and the second vanishing point 134 may be defined by other set elements 126.

[0030] The positional relationship of the converging lines defining the first vanishing point 132 and the second vanishing point 134 may facilitate the illusion of elevation change. For example, the first converging parallel lines 136 may define respective parallel vertical planes (e.g., vertical track planes). The second converging parallel lines 142 defining the second vanishing point 134 may extend within vertical planes that are parallel to the vertical track planes. In one example, the “horizontal” and “vertical”74927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01elements may each extend within vertical planes that are parallel to the vertical track planes.

[0031] The second vanishing point 134 may be different than the first vanishing point 132 to create the illusion of elevation change along the track section 102. For example, the second vanishing point 134 may be above or below the first vanishing point 132. In examples, the first vanishing point 132 may be on a horizon line. The track section 102 may be parallel to the horizon line. The horizon line may be the line where the ground and the sky meet. In such examples, the second vanishing point 134 may be above or below the horizon line to create the illusion of elevation change along the track section 102. In one example, the illusion of elevation change may include an illusion of changing stories along the building facade 138. For example, the building facade 138 may have multiple stories, described below, with the multiple stories angled towards the track section 102 to define the second vanishing point 134. In such examples, the angling of the set elements 126 may trick the guest 112 into believing the ride vehicle 108 is going up or down to different stories along the building facade 138. In one example, the second vanishing point 134 is defined below the first vanishing point 132, such that the illusion of elevation change includes an illusion of gaining elevation along the track section 102, although other configurations are contemplated.

[0032] Referring to FIG. 2, the first vanishing point 132 may be along the guest travel direction 146, or travel axis of the ride vehicle 108 along the track section 102. In such examples, the second vanishing point 134 may be along a direction of illusion 148 from the perspective of the guest 112. The direction of illusion 148 may be parallel to the “horizontal” line or lines defined by the “horizontal” set elements 126. The direction of illusion 148 may extend above or below the guest travel direction 146. For example, an angle 152 may be defined between the guest travel direction 146 and the direction of illusion 148. The direction of illusion 148 may be angled between about 10 degrees and about 20 degrees below the guest travel direction 146 (e.g., the angle 152 is between 10 degrees and 20 degrees). For example, the direction of illusion 148 may be angled 15 degrees below the guest travel direction 146 (e.g., the angle 152 is 15 degrees). In examples, the guest travel direction 146 may be horizontal.

[0033] Referring to FIGS. 3-4, the track section 102 may have a length L. The attraction 100 may include a visual feature 156. The visual feature 156 may be configured to provide an illusion of distance along the track section 102 that is different 84927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01than the length L. In one example, the visual feature 156 includes painting 160 along the length L of the track section 102. In another example, the visual feature 156 includes a repeating pattern 162 of the set elements 126. In another example, referring to FIG. 1, the visual feature 156 includes varying lighting 164 along the length L of the track section 102. Such examples are illustrative only, and other visual features 156 are contemplated.

[0034] The visual feature 156 may force a sense of perspective of the guest 112. For example, the repeating pattern 162 may be defined by repeating balusters, stairs, openings, marks, or other set elements 126 that are expected to be spaced equally along the length L of the track section 102 or set 104. To force the perspective of the guest 112, the repeating pattern 162 may have a varying pattern repeat distance along the length L of the track section 102. For example, the distance between the repeating balusters, stairs, openings, or marks may decrease along the length L of the track section 102, providing an illusion that the length L is greater than it actual is. The painting 160 may also force the perspective of the guest 112, such as painting a set element 126 with a color gradient from darker to lighter to simulate distance or height. The varying lighting 164 may also force the perspective of the guest 112. For example, the amount of light provided on a set element 126 may fade along at least one of its dimensions to simulate distance or height. The lighting 164 may also help to set the varying pattern repeat distance along the length L of the track section 102, such as to emphasize each repeating element of the repeating pattern 162.

[0035] In addition, or as alternative, to an illusion of distance, the visual features 156 may create an illusion of height. For example, the height of the set elements 126 may vary7along the length L of the track section 102 or along the height of the set 104 to force a height perspective of the guest 112. For example, lighting, painting, or dimensions may vary along the height of one or more set elements 126 to make the set elements 126 appear taller than they are. For example, windows, openings, or other set elements 126 on the building facade 138 may get smaller with distance above the track section 102, making the building facade 138 (e.g., a tower) feel taller than it is.

[0036] Referring to FIGS. 3-4, the set elements 126 may include a focal point 168 for the guest 112. The focal point 168 may draw the eyes of the guest 112 forward. Having the eyes of the guest 112 forward may facilitate the illusion of elevation change as the ride vehicle 108 traverses the track section 102. For example, the focal point 168 may 94927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01draw the rider’s attention away from the set elements 126 along the side of the ride vehicle 108 to conceal the illusion or trick. The focal point 168 may create a visual destination for the guest 112. For example, the focal point 168 may be a picture, video, or prop at or adjacent the end of the track section 102. The focal point 168 may be highlighted with lighting, sound, or other effects to draw the rider’s attention. In some examples, the focal point 168 may be at, adjacent, or overlap the first vanishing point 132.

[0037] FIG. 3 illustrates a first perspective at a first position along the attraction 100. At the first position, the majority or the entirety of the track section 102 is visible, defining a prominent first vanishing point 132 for the guest 112. The angled set elements 126 are also clearly visible in front of and in the peripheral vision of the guest 112, defining a prominent second vanishing point 134 that is below the first vanishing point 132. As a result, the track section 102 appears visually to rise or gain in elevation along its length L, providing an illusion of climbing or otherwise rising from the first story 140A to the second story 140B of the building facade 138. However, the track section 102 may be horizontal or generally horizontal, such as defined by a flat surface of the attraction’s floor. The focal point 168 may be prominent at the end of the track section 102, drawing the rider’s eyes forward.

[0038] FIG. 4 illustrates a second perspective at a second position along the attraction 100. At the second position, the track section 102 may be less visible. In such example, the angled set elements 126 may play a more important role in defining the differing vanishing points. For example, the set elements 126 may vary in size and spacing near the end of the track section 102 to better emphasize the second vanishing point 134 different than the first vanishing point 132 to maintain the visual illusion of climbing or rising from the first story 140 A to the second story 140B within the set 104. At the second position, the focal point 168 may continue to be prominent at the end of the track section 102, drawing the rider’s eyes forward and upward to facilitate the illusion.

[0039] FIG. 5 illustrates a third perspective at a third position along the attraction 100. With additional reference to FIG. 2, the third position may be defined at the end 174 of the track section 102. At the third position, the set elements 126 may no longer extend at an angle relative to the track section 102, such as extending vertically from the horizontal track section 102. Thus, at the third position, the attraction 100 may no longer define or create the illusion of elevation change. The attraction of claim 2, wherein:the track section is a flat track section extending to define the first vanishing point; andthe one or more set elements are non-perpendicular to the flat track section to define the second vanishing point above or below the first vanishing point to create the illusion of elevation change along at least a portion of the flat track section.

4. The attraction of claim 3, wherein the second vanishing point is defined below the first vanishing point, such that the illusion of elevation change comprises an illusion of gaining elevation along the portion of the flat track section.

5. The attraction of claim 2, wherein the first vanishing point is on a horizon line.

6. The attraction of claim 5, wherein the track section is parallel to the horizon line.

7. The attraction of claim 1, wherein the one or more set elements comprises a focal point creating a visual destination for the guest.134927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO018. The attraction of claim 1, wherein the one or more set elements comprises stair elements positioned adjacent the track section.

9. The attraction of claim 1 , wherein the one or more set elements comprises a building facade having multiple stories, the multiple stories angled towards the track section to define the second vanishing point.

10. The attraction of claim 9, wherein the illusion of elevation change comprises an illusion of changing stories along the building facade.

11. An attraction comprising:a track section defining a first vanishing point from a perspective of a guest, the first vanishing point on a horizon line; andone or more set elements defining a second vanishing point from the perspective of the guest, the second vanishing point above or below the horizon line to create an illusion of elevation change along the track section.

12. The attraction of claim 11, wherein the first vanishing point is defined by horizontal parallel lines at an interface between the track section and the one or more set elements.

13. The attraction of claim 1 1 , wherein the track section has a length, and wherein the attraction further comprises a visual feature configured to provide an illusion of distance along the track section that is different than the length.

14. The attraction of claim 13, wherein the visual feature comprises varying lighting or painting along the length of the track section.

15. The attraction of claim 13, wherein the visual feature comprises a repeating pattern of the one or more set elements, the repeating pattern having a varying pattern repeat distance along the length of the track section.

16. An attraction comprising:a track section defining a first vanishing point from a perspective of a guest;a ride vehicle configured to carry the guest along the track section; and144927-4191-4960\lDocket No. P322432WO01one or more set elements angled or positioned relative to the track section to define a second vanishing point from the perspective of the guest, the second vanishing point different than the first vanishing point to create an illusion of elevation change along the track section.

17. The attraction of claim 16, wherein the first vanishing point is along a guest travel direction of the ride vehicle along the track section, and wherein the second vanishing point is along a direction of illusion from the perspective of the guest, the direction of illusion extending above or below the guest travel direction.

18. The attraction of claim 17, wherein the direction of illusion is angled between 10 degrees and 20 degrees below the guest travel direction.

19. The attraction of claim 17, wherein the guest travel direction is horizontal.

20. The attraction of claim 16, wherein the track section extends at a track angle along a guest travel direction, and wherein the one or more set elements are angled relative to the track angle to create the illusion of elevation change different than the track angle.154927-4191-4960\l
