Abstract
Description
REUSABLE APPARATUS FOR MOLDING A SAMPLE MATERIALTECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] This application relates to a reusable apparatus for molding a sample material.BACKGROUND
[0002] Reusable test molds are used for casting test samples and typically have a cylinder like shape. A sample material is put into a molding apparatus, also called a test mold, and, in many cases, resides within the molding apparatus until it is cured and then removed from the test mold. In some cases, the sample material is concrete.
[0003] In some cases, a casting process includes pouring wet concrete (also called concrete in a plastic state) into the test mold in layers and rodding after each layer to consolidate the concreate and remove any trapped air. The sample is transferred after casting to an offsite location such as a laboratory where it is stripped from the test mold and cured under moist and temperature-controlled conditions. The cured sample, which may have the shape of the mold, then undergoes a strength measurement process.
[0004] For example, a compression testing machine tests the cured sample to determine compressive strength, which is a parameter for evaluating engineering design of structures, such as for research or quality control, or both.SUMMARY

[0054] Creating test samples of concrete and other mixtures used in construction is helpful to evaluate the safety, durability, and performance of structures. Test molds are used to prepare test samples that can be subjected to various tests, providing data on the material's properties before it is used in construction. In some cases, test molds are reusable.
[0055] In some cases, concrete is subjected to high loads and stresses, so determining their ability to withstand these forces is informative for research and quality control. In some cases, a molded test sample, which has been cured, is put into a machine that applies a compressive force until the sample breaks. This helps to establish whether the cured test sample can support the loads it will experience. Other types of tests may evaluate a cured test sample for tensile strength, flexural strength, and shrinkage testing.
[0056] In some cases, existing molds are watertight to prevent leaking of water from the concrete during casting and are designed to be resistant to damage from tamping during a rodding process and transportation. In some cases, existing mold designs are difficult to use. In some cases, due to the configuration of the mold, when removing a cured (or partially cured) sample from the mold, the cured (or partially cured) sample is damaged. In some cases, the cured (or partially cured) sample adheres to multiple walls and surfaces of the interior of the mold, and it is difficult for a technician to grasp on to multiple surfaces of the cured (or partially cured) sample to remove it from the mold. In some cases, existing molds have few openings, even in an “opened state”, which make it difficult for a technician to remove a sample from the mold. In some cases, these difficulties associated with existing molds increase the risk for damaging the sample when a technician tries to remove the sample from the mold. In some cases, the process of removing the sample, which may be cured or partially cured, from the mold is called “demolding”.
[0057] In some cases, for existing molds made of plastic, which are lighter and less bulky. Some existing molds made of plastic include a hollow cylindrical body with a fixed bottom that is unitary with the cylindrical body, and a top opening. In some cases, removing the sample from the top opening is difficult, and leads to damaging the sample during the demolding process.
[0058] In some cases, existing molds are difficult to assemble. The multiple components, including the main portions that form a cylindrical body, are difficult to align. Misalignment of the main portions of the mold leads to different shapes of the molded sample material, which leads to inconsistency and reduced precision in the testing data.
[0059] In some cases, existing molds are designed for single use, and then the molds are discarded.
[0060] In some cases, existing molds do not have adequate sealing or clamping force between the seams on the sides of the body of the mold, which may lead to the material egressing between the seams and forming protrusions (also herein called protruding seam lines) on the sides of the sample (which in many cases has a cylinder shape). In some cases, these protrusions create inconsistency between different samples, which reduces the consistency of the test data between different samples.
[0061] In some cases, existing molds are made of metal and include metal clasps with screws for tightening between two half cylinder pieces, metal hinges, and metal end cover to seal the bottom of a formed cylindrical tube. In some cases, metal molds are heavy and bulky.
[0062] In some cases, an improved reusable test mold for casting sample material is provided. Examples of sample material include concrete, backfill, slurries, and cementitious material, that could be cured or hardened to transition from a plastic state to a hardened state. Other types of sample material with similar properties are applicable to the reusable test mold described herein.
[0063] Referring now to FIGs. 1 to 4, a reusable apparatus 10 for molding a sample material is shown. The reusable apparatus 10 is a test mold for molding the sample material.
[0064] The sample material is for example, concrete, however in some cases the sample material may be backfill material, slurries, cementitious material, aggregates, and soil. Further, in some cases the sample material may include mortar, grout, asphalt, plaster, cement, self-compacting concrete, geopolymers, lightweight concrete, and polymer concrete etc.
[0065] The sample material has a flow state and a molded state. In the flow state, the sample material flows into the apparatus 10. In the molded state, the sample material generally retains the interior shape of the apparatus 10 when the apparatus 10 is removed from the sample material. The sample material hardens / dries / cures from the flow state to the molded state.
[0066] In an assembled state, as best shown in FIG. 1 , the reusable apparatus 10 has an elongate body 20 that includes a first end 22 and a second end 24. The body 20 is generally cylindrical in shape. The reusable apparatus includes a first portion 26 and a second portion 28 that are operable to be secured together to form the body 20. In some cases, each of the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 is generally semi-cylindrical in shape (e.g., each forming a half pipe), such that when the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together, they form the body 20 (e.g., forming a complete pipe); this is best shown in the exploded view in FIG. 3. When the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together, they form an interior cavity or void 30 in the body 20, as best seen in the partially assembledview in FIG. 4. In some cases, the void 30 is an elongate cylindrical void, which forms elongate cylindrical test samples. When the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together, the first end 22 defines a first opening 32 at the second end 24 defines a second opening (not shown). The second opening is positioned opposite the first opening 32, and in FIG. 4 is covered by a second cover 72.
[0067] The first portion 26 includes a first flange 40 extending along a first side 31 of the first portion and a second flange 44 extending along a second side 32 of the first portion. The first side 31 and the second side 32 are opposite sides of the first portion 26. In some cases, the first flange and the second flange extend along a portion of the length of the first portion, and not at the ends of the first portion, so as to allow for lids to be secured to the ends of the body. In some cases, the first side and the second side are elongate straight edges of the first portion. The first flange 40 and the second flange 44 respectively protrude outward from the first side 31 and the second side 32.
[0068] The second portion 28 includes a third flange 42 extending along a third side 33 of the second portion and a fourth flange 46 extending along a fourth side 34 of the second portion. The third side 33 and the fourth side 34 are opposite sides of the second portion 26. In some cases, the third flange and the fourth flange extend along a portion of the length of the second portion, and not at the ends of the second portion, so as to allow for lids to be secured to the ends of the body. In some cases, the third side and the fourth side are elongate straight edges of the second portion. The third flange 42 and the fourth flange 46 respectively protrude outward from the third side 33 and the fourth side 34.
[0069] When the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together to form the body 20, the first flange 40 and the third flange 42 abut each other, and the second flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 abut each other. This can be best seen in FIG. 2.
[0070] The first flange 40 includes a first face 41, and the third flange 42 includes a third face 43. In an assembled state of the reusable apparatus, the first face 41 and the third face 43 abut and bear against each other. The second flange 44 includes a second face 47, and the fourth flange 46 includes a fourth face 45. In theassembled state, the second face 47 and the fourth face 45 abut and bear against each other.
[0071] When the first flange 40 and the third flange 42 are separated from each other, a slit is defined between the first face 41 and the third face 43. When the second flange 44 and fourth flange 46 are separated from each other, a slit is defined between the second face 47 and the fourth face 45.
[0072] In some cases, each of the first flange, second flange, third flange and fourth flange include a retaining edge 48 extending orthogonally. The retaining edge 48 may be a lip or ridge. The retaining edges 48 of the flanges (i.e. , the first flange 40 and the second flange 42, and the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46) extend orthogonally in opposing directions. When the first flange 40 and the second flange 42 are brought together, and when the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 are brought together, the retaining edges 48 are configured to retain a clasp 50 (wherein the clasp 50 generally refers to either one or both of a first clasp 50a and a second clasp 50b).
[0073] In some cases, one of the first face 41 and the third face 43 has a protrusion and the other has a complementary receiving groove. In some cases, one of the second face 47 and the fourth face 45 has a protrusion and the other has a complementary receiving groove. The respective protrusion and groove combinations assist in the assembly of the apparatus 10 by ensuring a correct alignment of the first portion 26 and the second portion 28.
[0074] A first clasp 50a is securable to the retaining edges 48 of the first flange 40 and the third flange 42. A second clasp 50b is securable to the retaining edges of the second flange 44 and the fourth flange 46. The clasps 50 are moveable along a length of the respective flanges. The clasps 50 are applied to the respective flanges to maintain a connection between the first portion 26 and the second portion 28. The clasps 50 maintain the body 20 is a closed state whereby the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are unable to move apart from each other. The first clasp 50a is operable to slide along and engage the first flange 40 and the third flange 42, and a second clasp 50b is operable to slide along and engage the second flange 44 and the fourth flange 46, to secure the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 together.
[0075] In some cases, the length of each clasp 50 may be less than 10% of the length of the respective flanges 40-46. In some cases, the length of each clasp 50 maybe between 10% and 80% of the length of the respective flanges 40-46. In some cases, the length of each clasp 50 may be greater than 50% of the length of the respective flanges 40-46.
[0076] When the clasps 50 are applied to the respective retaining edges 48, they maintain the abutment of the first face 41 and the third face 43 and the second face 47 and the fourth face 45. When the clasps 50 are applied to the respective retaining edges 48, the slits defined between the first face 41 and the third face 43 and the second face 47 and the fourth face 45 are held closed.
[0077] In some cases, the first flange 40 and the third flange 42 in abutment with each other form a first T-shaped rail 52a, as best shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 4. The first T-shaped rail 52a has a T-shaped cross section, formed by the flanges and the retaining edges 48. In some cases, the first clasp 50a defines therein a first elongate channel 51a comprising a first T-shaped cross-section. When the first clasp 50a engages the first flange and the third flange, the first T -shaped rail 52a passes through the first elongate channel 51a.
[0078] Similarly, the second flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 in abutment with each other form a second T-shaped rail 52b, a portion of which can be seen in FIG. 2. In some cases, the second clasp 50b defines therein a second elongate channel 51b comprising a second T-shaped cross-section. When the second clasp 50b engages the second flange and the fourth flange, the second T-shaped rail 52b passes through the second elongate channel 51b.
[0079] Although a T-shaped rail formed by the flanges is shown, and a T-shaped cross-section of an elongate channel is shown in the clasp, it will be appreciated that other shapes of flanges and other shapes of the cross-section for the elongate channel are applicable to the reusable apparatus described herein.
[0080] For example, two flanges, when abutting each other, form a bulbous head in a rail, and a cross-section of the elongate channel is shaped to accommodate the bulbous head.
[0081] In some other cases, the flanges have straight side walls, and, when the flanges of the first portion and the second portion abut, form a rail with straight side walls. The clasp defines therein a channel that is shaped to accommodate the rail.
[0082] In some cases, the reusable apparatus 10 includes a securing feature 52 at the first end 22 of the body or the second end 24 of the body, or both. In some cases, the securing feature 52 is a screw thread. In some cases, the securing feature 52 includes clasps. In some cases, the securing feature 52 includes ridges (e.g., a lip). In some cases, the securing feature includes a threaded hole to receive a threaded bolt. Other types of securing features or fasteners can be used to removably secure a lid (e.g., also herein called a removably secure cover) to cover an opening of the body.
[0083] In some cases, a portion of the securing feature 52 is disposed on the first portion 26 of the body 20 and another portion of the securing feature 52 is disposed on the second portion 28 of the body 20. When the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together, the two portions of the securing feature 52 are brought together to form the securing feature 52.
[0084] A first removably securable cover (also called “first cover”) 60 is attachable and removable from the securing feature 52. The first cover 60 has a complementary screw thread such that the first cover 60 can be screwed on to the securing feature 52 to secure the first cover 60 to the body 20. The first cover 60 is attachable to cover the upper opening (e.g., first 32. In some cases, the first cover acts as a lid.
[0085] The reusable apparatus 10 includes a second securing feature 70 at the second end of the body 24. In some cases, the second securing feature 70 is a screw thread. In some cases, the second securing feature 70 is the same as the securing feature 52. In some cases, the second securing feature70 is different from the securing feature 52. In some cases, a portion of the second securing feature 70 is disposed on the first portion 26 of the body 20 and another portion of the second securing feature 70 is disposed on the second portion 28 of the body 20. When the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are brought together, the two portions of the second securing feature 70 are brought together to form the second securing feature 70.
[0086] A second removably securable cover (also called “second cover”) 72 is attachable and removable from the second securing feature 70. In some cases, the second cover 72 includes a complementary screw thread such that the second cover 72 can be screwed on to the second securing feature 70 to secure the second cover72 to the body 20. The second cover 72 is attachable to the lower opening (e.g., second opening).
[0087] In some cases, the body 20 defines therein a void 30 for holding the sample material. The first end 22 and the second end 24 are on opposite ends of the body, wherein the first end 22 defines a first opening 32, and a first securing feature 52 is located at the first end 22. The first removably securable cover 60 is operable to be secured to the first securing feature 52 to cover the first opening 32. The second end 24 defines the second opening, and a second securing feature 70 is located at the second end 24. The second removably securable cover 72 is operable to be secured to the second securing feature 70 to cover the second opening.
[0088] In some cases, the first cover 60 defines therein one or more openings 62 distributed across an upper surface 64 of the first cover 60. The openings 62 allow the exchange of air and moisture between the void 30 and the external environment. In some cases, the openings 62 allow the egress of excess water or moisture from evaporation from the sample material within the void 30. In some cases, the second cover 72 is generally identical to the securable cover 60 defining therein one or more the openings 62. For example, the one or more openings are one or more drainage holes.
[0089] In some other cases, the second cover 72 is a solid cover without any openings, and when the second cover 72 is attached to the body 20, the second cover 72 provides a sealed bottom portion of the reusable apparatus 10.
[0090] In some cases, the openings 62 assist in the hardening, drying, and / or molding of the sample material within the apparatus 10 more quickly. In some cases, the openings 62 are generally circular with a diameter of between about 1 mm and 1.5 mm. In some cases, the diameter of the openings 62 is less than about 1 mm. In some cases, the diameter of the openings 62 is more than about 1.5 mm. In some cases, the diameter of the openings 62 is 3mm or less. In some cases, the openings 62 are sized to be small enough, and the sample material has a rheological property, that moisture from the sample material in the void 30 can escape to the external environment, while solids of the sample material remains within the void 30. Other sizes of openings 62 are applicable to the reusable apparatus 10.
[0091] In some cases, the first flange includes a first face and the third flange comprises a third face that abuts against the first face when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body; one of the first face and the third face comprises a protrusion towards the other one of the first face and the third face; the other one of the first face and the third face comprises a depression that is aligned with the protrusion; and wherein the protrusion is operable to engage the depression.
[0092] In some cases, the second flange comprises a second face and the fourth flange comprises a fourth face that abuts against the second face when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body; one of the second face and the fourth face comprises a second protrusion towards the other one of the second face and the fourth face; the other one of the second face and the fourth face comprises a second depression that is aligned with the second protrusion; and wherein the second protrusion is operable to engage the second depression.
[0093] In some cases, the first portion and the second portion are each entirely plastic.
[0094] In some cases, the first portion, the second portion, the first removably securable cover, the second removably securable cover, the first clasp, and the second clasp each comprise plastic.
[0095] Referring to FIGs. 5A and 5B, different embodiments of flanges are shown to mechanically align the flanges together when forming the body 20. In particular, when the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are positioned together to form the body, the first flange 40 and the third flange 42 abut each other, and the second flange and the fourth flange abut each other. In some cases, the first flange includes a first alignment part and the third flange comprises a third alignment part, and when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body, the first alignment part and the second alignment part mechanically engage each other. The second flange includes a second alignment part and the fourth flange comprises a fourth alignment part, and when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body, the second alignment part and the fourth alignment part mechanically engage each other.
[0096] Different types of alignment parts can be applied to the flanges.
[0097] In FIG. 5A, a side view of part of the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 is shown. The first flange 40 comprises a first face 41 and the third flange 42 comprises a third face 43 that abuts against the first face when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body. One of the first face and the third face includes multiple protrusions that protrude towards the other one of the first face and the third face, and the other one of the first face and the third face comprises multiple depressions that are respectively aligned with the multiple protrusions. In particular, the multiple protrusions respectively engage the multiple depressions when the first face abuts against the third face. In FIG. 5A, the first face 41 includes the multiple protrusions 502 and the third face 43 has defined therein multiple depressions 503.
[0098] In some cases, the protrusions are ball shaped, triangular shaped, teeth shaped, or any other shape suitable for assisting with alignment. The depressions are shaped to receive and engage the protrusions.
[0099] The multiple alignment parts are shown on the first flange and the third flange, in FIG. 5A, are also applicable to the second flange and the fourth flange. The second flange includes a second face and the fourth flange includes a fourth face that abuts against the second face when the first portion and the second portion are positioned together to form the body. One of the second face and the fourth face includes multiple second protrusions that protrude towards the other one of the second face and the fourth face, and the other one of the second face and the fourth face includes multiple second depressions that are respectively aligned with the multiple second protrusions. The multiple second protrusions respectively engage the multiple second depressions when the second face abuts against the fourth face.
[0100] In FIG. 5B, a protrusion 506 on the first face 41 and the corresponding depression 507 on the third face 43 are both offset from a mid-line of the body, so that the protrusion 506 and the depression 507 are closer to the first end of the body or are closer the second end of the body. In some cases, this offset configuration helps to align the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 in a certain orientation relative to each other.
[0101] Referring to FIG. 6, an enlarged / magnified side view of the portion A in FIG. 1 is provided. In some cases, the first cover 60 includes a first lip 601 extendingpast the body 20, in an assembled state of the reusable apparatus. Similarly, the second cover 72 includes a second lip extending past the body. In some cases, when the first portion is secured to the second portion including the first cover secured to the first securing feature to cover the first opening and the second cover secured to the second securing feature to cover the second opening, the first lip 501 and the second lip block the first clasp 50a from sliding off and disengaging the first flange and the third flange.
[0102] In some cases, this configuration also occurs on the second rail. When the first portion is secured to the second portion including the first cover secured to the first securing feature to cover the first opening and the second cover secured to the second securing feature to cover the second opening, the first lip and the second lip block the second clasp 50b from sliding off and disengaging the second flange and the fourth flange.
[0103] Referring to FIGs. 7 and 8, another embodiment of a reusable apparatus 10a is shown. It also includes a first portion 26 and a second portion 28, a first flange 40, a second flange 44, a third flange 42, and a fourth flange 46, which are similar to the parts described with respect to the reusable apparatus 10. In some cases, the flanges include one or more alignment parts that mechanically engage each other for alignment. In some cases, the flanges include a protrusion and a depression (or groove) to engage each other for alignment. However, the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are joined at bottom by a flexible bottom 702. For example, the flexible bottom 702 is made of a flexible plastic or a flexible rubber. A first part 704 of the flexible bottom 702 is attached to, or integrally formed with, the first portion 26. A second part 706 of the flexible bottom 702 is attached to, or integrally formed with, the second portion 28. A flexible portion 706 of the flexible bottom surface 702 is able to bend so that the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 can angle away from each other to an opened state, as best shown in FIG. 7. This helps to more easily remove the sample material (which may be hardened) from the reusable apparatus 10a.
[0104] In another aspect, there is a top end and a bottom end on opposite ends of the body 20. The top end defines a top opening, when the first portion and the second portion abut each other to form a body 20a. A removably securable cover 60 is operable to be removably secured to the top end to cover the top opening. The bottom end comprises a flexible bottom 702 that is attached to, or integrally formedwith, the first portion 26 and the second portion 28. In an opened state of the reusable apparatus, the first portion and the second portion are angled away from each other, and the flexible bottom is in a flexed configuration, as shown in FIG. 7.
[0105] In an assembled state of the reusable apparatus 10a, as shown in FIG.8, the first portion and the second portion abut each other to form a body 20a, and the first cover 60 (or top removably securable cover) is removably secured to the top end of the body.
[0106] In some cases, a clasp 50 engages a rail formed by the first flange 40 and the third flange 42. Similarly, a clasp 50 engages a rail formed by the second flange 44 and the fourth flange 46.
[0107] FIG. 6 shows a method 600 of assembling the reusable apparatus 10. At block 610, the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are aligned such that they can be secured together to form the body 20 of the apparatus 10 and define the void 30 for holding the sample material.
[0108] The first face 41 and the third face 43 are brought together and the second face 47 and the fourth face 45 are brought together. In some cases, one of the first face 41 and the third face 43 has a protrusion and the other has a complementary receiving groove. In some cases, one of the second face 47 and the fourth face 45 has a protrusion and the other has a complementary receiving groove. The respective protrusion and groove combinations assist in the assembly of the apparatus 10 by ensuring a correct alignment of the first portion 26 and the second portion 28.
[0109] At block 620, the second securing cover 72 is attached to the second end 24 of the body 10, covering the lower opening. In some cases, the second securing cover 72 is removably attached with the second securing feature 70. In this case, the second securing cover 72 is screwed onto the screw thread of the second securing feature 70. In some cases, the second securing feature is permanently attached to the body 10.
[0110] At block 630, a clasp 50 is slidably attached to the aligned first portion 26 and second portion 28. A clasp 50 is slidably attached to the respective retaining edges 48 of the first flange 40 and the second flange 42. The clasp 50 maintains contact between the first face 41 and the second face 43.
[0111] In some cases, a clasp 50 is slidably attached to the respective retaining edges 48 of the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46. The clasp 50 maintains contact between the third face 45 and the fourth face 47.
[0112] At block 640, the securing cover 60 is attached to the first end 22 of the body 20, covering the upper opening 32. The securing cover 60 is removably attached with the securing feature 70. In this case, the second securing cover 72 is screwed onto the screw thread of the second securing feature 70.
[0113] Prior to attaching the second securing cover 72 the void 30 of the apparatus 10 is filled with the sample material. The sample material is in the flow state when entering the void 10. The sample material may be put into the void 30 in layers, with the sample material experiencing rodding to agitate the sample material to remove air bubble and promote consistency throughout the sample material.
[0114] When the apparatus 10 has been filled and is ready for transportation to the offsite location for testing, a removable cover can be applied to each of the securable cover 60 and the second securable cover 72. The application of the removable covers helps to limit excessive leaking from the apparatus 10 during transportation.
[0115] FIG. 7 shows an exemplary method 600 of disassembling the apparatus 10. At block 710, one of the securable cover 60 and the second securable cover 72 is removed from the body. In the case where the second securable cover 72 is permanently attached to the second end 24 of the body 20, only the securable cover 60 is removable from the body.
[0116] At block 720, a clasp 50 is slidably removed from the aligned first portion 26 and second portion 28 of the body. A clasp 50 is slidably removed from the respective retaining edges 48 of the first flange 40 and the second flange 42.
[0117] At block 730, the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are separated from each other to separate the molded sample material from the body 20. The first flange 40 and the second flange 42 are separated from each other to define a slit. The first face 41 and the second face 43 are separated from each other to define the slit. This loosens the molded sample material in the apparatus 10 such that it can be removed.
[0118] At block 740, the molded sample material is removed from the apparatus 10.
[0119] In some cases, another clasp 50 is slidably removed from the aligned first portion 26 and second portion 28 of the body. The clasp 50 is slidably removed from the respective retaining edges 48 of the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46.
[0120] In some cases, the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 are separated from each other to define a slit. The third face 45 and the fourth face 44 are separated from each other to define the slit. This further loosens the molded sample material in the apparatus 10 such that it can be removed.
[0121] In some cases, removable covers are applied to the securable cover 60 and the second securable cover 72. In this case, these are removed prior to commencing the method 600 for disassembling the apparatus 10.
[0122] The apparatus 10 is reusable and can be reassembled and used to mold further sample material.
[0123] Although FIGs. 1 to 4 show and describe the reusable apparatus 10 as having the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 as separate pieces coming together to form the body 20, other configurations are possible. In some cases, the first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are connected such that the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 are not required. The first portion 26 and the second portion 28 are connected where the third flange 44 and the fourth flange 46 would otherwise meet. The first flange 40 and the second flange 42 are operable to move away from each other to define a split along a length of the body 10 defining an opened state of the apparatus 10. The first flange 40 and the second flange 42 are biased to abut each other in the closed state. In this case, only one clasp 50 is applied to the first flange 40 and the second flange 42 to maintain the body 10 in the closed state. In this case, the first securing feature 52 is continuous about the first end 22 of the body 20 between the first flange 40 and the second flange 42. In this case, the second securing feature 70 is continuous about the second end 24 of the body 20 between the first flange 40 and the second flange 42.
[0124] Although Figures 1 to 4 show the second securable cover 72 as removable from the second securable feature 70 at the second end 24 of the body 20, other configurations are possible. In some cases, the second securable cover 72 isintegral to the body such that it is not removable from the second end 24 of the body 20.
[0125] The apparatus 10 is typically made of plastic although other materials can be used. The apparatus is compliant with the American Society for Testing and Materials standards C31 and C39. The apparatus 10 is rigid and robust such that the test sample within the apparatus 10 is protected from damage during transportation.
[0126] Although FIGs. 1 to 4 show the apparatus 10 as being generally cylindrical, other configurations are possible. In some cases, the apparatus 10 may have a generally square or rectangular cross section. In some cases, the apparatus 10 may have a generally oval cross section. In some cases, the apparatus 10 may have another cross-sectional shape.
[0127] The described apparatus provides a pre-made mold for compression testing of sample materials such a backfill materials etc. The apparatus is reusable and easily maintained due to its modular nature. Individual components can be easily replaced in the event of a component failure. The apparatus is easily cleanable due to its modular nature. The described apparatus is not limited to particular dimensions. The apparatus can be of variable height and diameter to provide for testing of sample materials in different size test samples. The openings providing on the second securable cover allow for drainage of excess liquid in the sample material. The removable securing covers and slidable clasps provide for quick and efficient assembly and disassembly of the apparatus. In particular, the removable securing covers and slidable clasps provide for quick and efficient removable of the molded sample material without damaging either the molded sample material or the components of the apparatus.
