[0001] The present disclosure relates to a silicone composition and a cured product thereof. Background

[0002] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure which is not necessarily prior art.

[0003] Silicone compositions are used in a wide range of industrial fields as they form cured products having excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, water repellency, and transparency. For example, US2019 / 0292419Al discloses a condensation-curable electrically conductive silicone adhesive composition that includes a reactive MQ organosiloxane resin, a reactive polydiorganosiloxane polymer, and particulate metal-based fillers, with each component present in specified proportions.Summary

[0004] The present disclosure provides a silicone composition and a cured product thereof.

[0005] In a first aspect, a silicone composition is disclosed. The silicone composition according to embodiments disclosed herein comprises: (A) a MQ resin having an alkoxy group; (B) a siloxane polymer having an alkoxy group; (C) an adhesion promotor including (Cx) an epoxy group-containing alkoxysilane; and (D) a titanium tetraalkoxide

[0006] In a second aspect, a cured product is disclosed. The cured product according to embodiments disclosed herein is obtainable from the silicone composition of the first aspect of the present disclosure.

[0007] These and other embodiments are described in more detail in the Detailed Description.Detailed Description

[0008] Unless stated to the contrary, implicit from the context, or customary in the art, all parts and percents are based on weight, all temperatures are in ℃, and all test methods are current as of the filing date of this disclosure. The term “composition, ” as used herein, refers to a mixture of materials which comprises  the composition, as well as reaction products and decomposition products formed from the materials of the composition. The term “organopolysiloxane” as used herein, refers to a polymer containing multiple  siloxane bonds and having at least one organic group. Organopolysiloxanes comprise siloxane units that are selected from those known in the art as: SiO4 / 2 (Q unit) , RSiO3 / 2 (T unit) , R2SiO2 / 2 (D unit) , and R3SiO1 / 2 (M unit) . The subscript on the R group indicates how many R groups are bound to the silicon atom. The subscript on the oxygen indicates how many oxygens are bound to the silicon that are also bound to another silicon (that is, how siloxane linkages, “Si-O-Si” bonds, the silicon atom participates in) divided by 2 because the oxygen is shared with another silicon atom so only half of each oxygen is considered bound to each silicon atom. Hence, a D unit comprises a silicon atom bound to two R groups and sharing two oxygens with other silicon atoms, so it includes two halfoxygen atoms. In general, the R group can be any substituent other than -OSi (that is, a siloxane bond to the silicon) . Generally, the R group is a hydrogen or hydrocarbyl bound to the silicon atom through a carbon-silicon bond. However, the R group in the broadest scope herein can also be a group bound to the silicon atom with an atom other than hydrogen or carbon, for instance sulfur or oxygen. For instance, the R group can be selected from hydroxyl or alkoxyl groups, which are jointly referred to as “OZ” groups. The term “MQ resin” as used herein, refers to an organopolysiloxane containing at least  M units (R3SiO1 / 2 units) and Q units (SiO4 / 2 units) . In some embodiments, the MQ resin may contain T units (RSiO3 / 2 units) and / or D units (R2SiO2 / 2 units) in addition to M units and Q units. In other words, the MQ resin may include MTQ resin, MDQ resin, and / or MDTQ resin. In some embodiments, the total molar ratios of M units and Q units in the total siloxane units (M, D, T, and Q units) of the MQ resin may be from 70.0 to 100.0 mol%, optionally from 80.0 to 100.0 mol%, optionally from 90.0 to 100.0 mol%, optionally from 95.0 to 100.0 mol%, or optionally from 98.0 to 100.0 mol%. The term “siloxane polymer” as used herein, refers to an organopolysiloxane consisting  of M units and D units, and not containing Q units or T units. The term “silicone composition, ” as used herein, refers to a composition including an  organopolysiloxane. The terms “comprising, ” “including, ” “having, ” and their derivatives, are not intended  to exclude the presence of any additional component, step or procedure, whether or not the same is specifically disclosed. In order to avoid any doubt, all compositions claimed through use of the term “comprising” may include any additional additive, adjuvant, or compound, whether polymeric or otherwise, unless stated to the contrary. In contrast, the term, “consisting essentially of” excludes from the scope of any succeeding recitation any other component, step or procedure, excepting those that are not essential to operability. The term “consisting of” excludes any component, step or procedure not specifically delineated or listed. The use of “for example, ” “e.g., ” and “such as, ” to list illustrative examples does not  limit to only the listed examples. Thus, “for example” or “such as” means “for example, but not limited to” or “such as, but not limited to” and encompasses other similar or equivalent examples. The term “ (meth) acryloyl” as used herein refers to acryloyl and / or methacryloyl. The term “alkyl / alkenyl trialkoxysilane” are used herein refers to alkyl trialkoxysilane  and / or alkenyl trialkoxysilane. The viscosity (Pa·s) is measured at a shear rate of 1.0 (1 / s) and 10.0 (1 / s) using a  rheometer (MCR102) manufactured by Anton Paar GmbH at 25℃. The thixotropic index is determined as the ratio of the viscosity at a shear rate of 1.0 (1 / s) to the viscosity at a  shear rate of 10.0 (1 / s) . Determine chemical structure for organopolysiloxanes by standard 1H, 13C and 29Si  nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, such as, described in US Patent 9,593,209, Reference Example 2 at col. 32.

Examples

[0057] The silicone composition and the cured product of the present disclosure will now be described in detail using Inventive Examples and Comparative Examples. Note that, in the formulas, “Me” indicates a methyl group and “Vi” indicates a vinyl group.

[0058] Tack-free time, adhesion on PA66 and on nickel, tensile strength, and elongation were evaluated as follows.

[0059] Tack-free time

[0060] The tack-free time was determined as the time when the skin of the composition no longer sticks to a glove covered finger when the composition is touched gently.

[0061] Adhesion on PA66 (lap share testing)

[0062] The obtained silicone composition, sufficient to fill a 25 mm*25 mm overlap with a thickness of lmm, was applied onto a first substrate of PA66 surface in a laminating apparatus. A second substrate of PA66 was then placed on top of the composition applied to the first substrate to give a pre-sized lap. The two substrates were compressed, and excess composition was removed. The silicone composition in said pre-sized laps, sandwiched between the two substrates, was cured at room temperature for a period of seven days after which the lap shear strength (MPa) was determined by pulling the pre-sized laps apart by shear at a rate of 50 mm / min. In the present disclosure, it was determined that the tensile strength of 0.20 MPa or greater is considered satisfactory when using a substrate of PA66.

[0063] In the above lap share testing, the failure mode was also recorded. Cohesive failure (CF) was observed when the cured product itself breaks without detaching form the substrate surface. It was considered that if the failure was not by CF, it was by adhesive failure (AF) . Adhesive failure (AF) refers to the situation when a sample detaches cleanly (peels off) from a substrate surface. In some cases, a mixed failure mode has been observed: i.e. some areas peel-off (i.e. AF) while some remain covered with cured product (i.e. CF) . In such instances, the portion displaying CF (CF%) was recorded (bearing in mind %CF +%AF=100%) . In the present disclosure, it was determined that the CF%of 30 %or greater is considered satisfactory (80 %or greater is preferable) when using a substrate of PA66

[0064] Adhesion on nickel (lap share testing)

[0065] Except for changing the material of the first substrate and second substrate from PA66 to nickel, the lap shear strength (MPa) and the portion displaying CF (CF%) were measured using the same procedure as described in the above section “Adhesion on PA66” . In the present disclosure, it was determined that the lap shear strength of 0.20 MPa or greater is considered satisfactory when using a substrate of nickel. Additionally, it was determined that the CF%of 80 %or greater is considered satisfactory when using a substrate of nickel.

[0066] Tensile strength

[0067] The tensile strength of the cured product in the shape of a dogbone shape was measured according to ASTM D412-98a. In the present disclosure, it was determined that the tensile strength of 0.3 MPa or greater is considered satisfactory.

[0068] Elongation

[0069] The elongation at break of the cured product in the shape of a dogbone shape was measured according to ASTM D412-98a. In the present disclosure, it was determined that the elongation of 90 %or greater is considered satisfactory.
