[0008] Can lid

[0009] The invention relates to a can lid for a beverage can, which has a resealable drinking opening, comprising a metallic lid surface in which an opening area is formed, a sealing frame made of plastic material firmly connected to the metallic lid surface and enclosing the opening area, a closing unit made of plastic material which is pivotably connected to the metallic lid surface or to the sealing frame by means of a first joint about a first pivot axis extending parallel to the metallic lid surface and is designed to close the opening area directly and / or by means of a closure piece of the metallic lid surface carried by the closing unit in a closing position pivoted towards the sealing frame and to release the opening area for a drinking process in an opening position pivoted away from the sealing frame.and a pull handle provided for opening the closure unit, which is pivotably connected to the closure unit by means of a second joint about a second pivot axis, wherein the first joint and the second joint are arranged in opposite areas of the closure unit and wherein the second pivot axis defines an upward pivot plane for the pull handle from a first position pivoted towards the closure unit to a second position projecting upwards from the closure unit, wherein the upward pivot plane extends perpendicular to the second pivot axis and to the metallic lid surface.

[0010] The closure element is a metallic tear-off area in the metallic lid surface, defined from the rest of the metallic lid surface by a micro-gap or a weakening line enclosing the tear-off area. The plastic closure unit and the metallic closure element are so firmly connected that the forces required to detach the closure element from the rest of the metallic lid surface upon initial opening are transferred from the closure unit to the closure element.

[0011] Beverage cans with these types of lids can be easily opened and, if necessary, closed again by manually pivoting the locking mechanism using the pull handle. Typically, when opening, the pull handle is first pivoted into the protruding position, where it can be easily grasped. The user then pulls the handle away from their body, pivoting the locking mechanism into the open position.

[0012] Generally, the contents of a beverage can can be poured into a container through the drinking opening. However, it is common to drink directly from the can. There is a general tendency to tilt the can upwards within the opening plane to drink. This tilting motion generally occurs within the opening plane because the drinker tends to drink in the opposite direction to the initial pull. However, if the cap and pull tab extend through the opening plane, they interfere with drinking. In particular, this can lead to unpleasant nose contact with the cap and / or pull tab.

[0013] It is an object of the invention to provide a can lid for a beverage can that facilitates the drinking process.

[0014] According to a first aspect, the problem is solved by a can lid having the features of claim 1.

[0015] Accordingly, the can lid has a resealable drinking opening and a metallic lid surface with an opening area, as well as a sealing frame made of plastic material that is firmly connected to the metallic lid surface and surrounds the opening area. A closing unit is pivotally connected to the metallic lid surface or to the sealing frame by means of a first joint about a first pivot axis running parallel to the metallic lid surface and is designed to close the opening area in a closed position pivoted towards the sealing frame and to release the opening area for drinking in an open position pivoted away from the sealing frame. The can lid also features a pull handle for opening the closure unit, which is pivotally connected to the closure unit by means of a second joint about a second pivot axis. The first and second joints are located on opposite lateral edges of the closure unit. As described in the first aspect, the first pivot axis and the second pivot axis are not parallel to each other. Consequently, the upward pivot plane of the pull handle passes through the center line of the can lid and the drinking opening, as usual, while the pivot plane of the closure unit is oblique to the center line of the can lid and the drinking opening. Thus, when the closure unit is in its open position, the closure unit and the pull handle attached to it are pivoted laterally relative to the center line.

[0016] According to the first aspect, the first pivot axis runs obliquely to the upward pivot plane of the pull handle defined by the second pivot axis. This means that the first pivot axis, intended for opening the closure unit, is not perpendicular to the upward pivot plane defined by the pivoting pull handle. Therefore, the closure unit can be pivoted out of the upward pivot plane, which corresponds to the preferred drinking motion plane, thus avoiding nose contact. In other words, when the can lid is opened, the closure unit moves out of the preferred drinking motion plane and is therefore not in the way of the user's nose when tilting the can. In particular, this prevents any bothersome nose contact while drinking, which is ergonomically advantageous.

[0017] According to one embodiment of the invention, there is an angle of intersection of at least 10° and at most 80°, preferably at least 20° and at most 70°, and particularly preferably about 45°, between the first pivot axis and the pivoting plane. It has been found that such an inclination is sufficient to avoid nose contact and at the same time ensure ergonomic opening of the can by pivoting the closing unit away from the user's path in the usual manner.

[0018] Preferably, the can lid has a cranked tab extending between the sealing frame and the closing unit, comprising a section on the sealing frame side and a section on the closing unit side. The first pivot point with the first pivot axis is located between the sealing frame-side section and the closing unit-side section of the tab. The first pivot axis is thus spaced from the sealing frame to facilitate opening the closing unit and, in particular, releasing the interlocking sealing sections of the closing unit and the sealing frame. Due to the cranked design, the end of the tab facing the sealing frame can be located in the pivot plane, while the end of the sealing frame-side section furthest from the sealing frame is offset from it. The cranked tab can be flat and extend parallel to the metallic lid surface.Preferably, the tab is bonded to the sealing frame, in particular being formed integrally with it. The first hinge can be formed by a region of the tab where the tab has a material weakening, i.e., is thinner than in the adjacent region. The first hinge is then formed by a bending or foil hinge.

[0019] The locking unit can also be pivoted about a third pivot axis relative to the sealing frame. This third pivot axis runs obliquely to the first pivot axis and parallel to the second pivot axis, and is located between the first and second pivot axes. The locking unit pivots about the third pivot axis before pivoting about the first. Thus, after the pull handle has been raised, the locking unit can be pivoted into a pre-opening position by pulling on it within the plane of the upward pivot. This is advantageous because the user can generally exert the greatest force when pulling the handle directly away from their body, and a relatively large force is required, especially in the initial phase of the opening process, because at this stage there is only a small leverage effect and the sealing mechanism must first be released.Furthermore, the pull ring can transfer force to the sealing unit where the edge of the drinking opening – defined by a micro-gap or a weakening line in the metallic lid surface – is closest to the edge of the can lid. This facilitates the initial opening of the drinking opening, during which the sealing piece must be detached from the rest of the metallic lid surface.

[0020] Preferably, the third pivot axis is arranged in the section of the cranked tab on the side facing the locking unit. The section of the tab on the side facing the locking unit can easily provide a third joint, for example, in the form of a material weakening. According to a further embodiment of the invention, the third pivot axis is arranged in the closed position of the locking unit between the edge of the opening area and the end of the section of the cranked tab on the side facing the sealing frame that is furthest from the sealing frame. This ensures that the locking unit is detached from the sealing frame in the pre-opening position before pivoting about the first pivot axis, which runs obliquely to the upward pivot plane, takes place. For example, the arrangement of the cranked tab and the locking unit-side section of the tab of the locking unit can form a double joint, via which the locking unit is connected to the sealing frame.

[0021] The pull handle may have a marking indicating a pulling direction parallel to or within the pivoting plane. This allows the user to immediately know how to hold the can, how to lift the pull handle, and in which direction to pull it.

[0022] According to a further embodiment of the invention, an elastic support projection is arranged on the closing unit. When the closing unit is pivoted away from the sealing frame, this projection rests against the metallic lid surface, thereby holding the closing unit in the open position. This facilitates the drinking process by preventing the closing unit from unintentionally pivoting back towards the upward pivoting plane. Instead, pivoting the closing unit back to close the drinking opening is only possible by overcoming the elasticity of the support projection, i.e., with a deliberate effort.

[0023] It can be designed so that, when the closing unit is in the closed position, the elastic support projection extends parallel or obliquely to the metallic cover surface and, when the closing unit pivots away from the sealing frame, slides over the metallic cover surface under temporary elastic deformation. The support projection automatically prevents the closing unit from moving backward once the point of maximum deformation has been exceeded.

[0024] Another embodiment of the invention provides that the closing unit is made of an elastic plastic material and the elastic support projection is molded onto the closing unit. This allows for a particularly simple design.

[0025] The elastic support projection can have a curved profile to facilitate adjustment of the elasticity. According to a further embodiment of the invention, the metallic lid surface has a geometric center and an outer perimeter, wherein the opening area has at least one first edge point which is closer to the outer perimeter of the metallic lid surface than at least one second edge point of the opening area, wherein a preferred drinking movement plane extending perpendicular to the metallic lid surface passes through the geometric center of the metallic lid surface and through the first edge point of the opening area, and wherein the pivoting plane is parallel to or coincides with the preferred drinking movement plane.A person drinking from a can generally aims to orient the lid so that the edge of the opening closest to the lid's outer rim is at the bottom for easy pouring. When this preferred drinking motion coincides with the upward tilting plane, handling the can's lid is particularly simple and intuitive.

[0026] The pull handle may have a handling projection opposite the second pivot axis. A handling projection makes it easier to grasp and lift the pull handle from its home position, that is, from the first position.

[0027] Preferably, the pivoting plane runs through the handling projection. The arrangement of the handling projection in the pivoting plane is ergonomically advantageous.

[0028] The sealing frame, the locking unit, and the pull handle are preferably formed from a single injection-molded part. This allows for particularly simple and cost-effective manufacturing.

[0029] According to a second aspect, the problem is solved by a can lid according to claim 18.

[0030] According to the second aspect, the can lid has a resealable drinking opening and a metallic lid surface with an opening area, as well as a sealing frame made of plastic material that is firmly connected to the metallic lid surface and surrounds the opening area. A closing unit is pivotally connected to the metallic lid surface or to the sealing frame by means of a first joint about a first pivot axis running parallel to the metallic lid surface and is designed to close the opening area in a closed position pivoted towards the sealing frame and to release the opening area for drinking in an open position pivoted away from the sealing frame.According to the second aspect, the closing unit is connected to the sealing frame by a tab which, in the closed position, is folded around the first pivot axis and forms the first joint there, and which, in the closed position, extends in a direction of extension from the sealing frame to the first pivot axis, the first pivot axis extending obliquely to the direction of extension of the tab.

[0031] Preferably, the tab between the first pivot axis and the closing unit defines a third joint with a third pivot axis that extends perpendicular to the direction of extension of the tab and thus does not run parallel to the first pivot axis. When the drinking opening is opened, the closing unit initially pivots about the third pivot axis and then about the first pivot axis until the tab remains essentially extended and, in particular, folded at an obtuse angle of more than 100° about the first pivot axis.

[0032] The can lid preferably has a pull handle for opening the closure unit, which is pivotably connected to the closure unit by means of a second joint about a second pivot axis, wherein the first joint and the second joint are arranged on opposite lateral edge regions of the closure unit and wherein the second pivot axis runs parallel to the third pivot axis. In this variant of a can lid according to the second aspect, it also fulfills the first aspect.

[0033] Further developments of the invention can also be found in the dependent claims, the description and the accompanying drawings.

[0034] The invention is described below by way of example with reference to the drawings.

[0035] Fig. 1 is a top view of a can lid according to the invention in an open state.

[0036] Fig. 2 shows the can lid according to Fig. 1 in a closed state.

[0037] Fig. 3 shows an injection-molded part comprising a sealing frame, a closing unit, and a pull handle for the can lid according to Fig. 1. Figs. 1 and 2 show a can lid 11 intended for a beverage can, in whose metallic lid surface 12 a resealable drinking opening 13 is provided. The can lid 11 has an outer rim 17 by means of which it can be connected to a corresponding beverage container (not shown), for example by crimping. An opening 19 is formed in the metallic lid surface 12, which can be closed by a section of the metallic lid surface 12 in the form of a closure piece 21. The metallic lid surface 12 is preferably formed from a sheet of aluminum or tinplate, and a coating of plastic material may be applied to an inner flat side of the metallic lid surface 12.

[0038] The opening area 19 is enclosed by a sealing frame 22 made of plastic material, which is firmly connected to the metallic cover surface 12. Furthermore, a closing unit 23 made of plastic material, which carries the closing piece 21, is provided and is pivotably connected to the sealing frame 22 about a first pivot axis 25. A detachable, fluid-tight connection between the sealing frame 22 and the closing unit 23 is enabled by means of a detachable locking device, the details of which are not visible, formed by sealing and locking ribs and associated receiving grooves.

[0039] The sealing frame 22 is connected to the closing unit 23 via a cranked tab 24. The tab 24 has a cranked section on the sealing frame side that extends away from the sealing frame 22 in one direction, and a section 26 on the closing unit side that extends away from the closing unit 23. The direction of extension along which the cranked section of the tab 24 extends away from the sealing frame 22 runs along the pivot plane 39. "Direction of extension" thus refers to the initial direction in which the cranked section of the tab 24 extends away from the sealing frame 22, namely a radial direction with respect to the sealing frame 22.A first joint 28 is formed between the sealing frame-side section of the cranked tab 24 and its closing unit-side section 26, by means of which the closing unit 23 is pivotably coupled to the sealing frame 22 about the first pivot axis 25. The first pivot axis 25 runs parallel to the metallic cover surface 12.

[0040] A substantially ring-shaped pull handle 27 is pivotably connected to the closing unit 23 about a second pivot axis 29 by means of a second joint 30. In the closed state of the can lid 11 shown in Fig. 2, the closing unit 23 is pivoted towards the (here not visible) sealing frame 22. Likewise, the pull handle 27 is pivoted towards the closing unit 23. Furthermore, in this state, the second pivot axis 29, like the first pivot axis 25, runs parallel to the metallic lid surface 12. Additionally, the closing unit-side section 26 of the tab 24 rests on the sealing frame-side section of the cranked tab 24.

[0041] Regardless of the pivot position of the closing unit 23, the first joint 28 and the second joint 30 – as well as the first pivot axis 25 and the second pivot axis 29 – are arranged in opposite regions of the closing unit 23. As shown, a handling projection 32 is arranged on one of the circumferential regions 31 of the pull handle 27 opposite the second pivot axis 29, so that the pull handle 27 can be easily grasped.

[0042] In the area of the beveled tab 24, a third joint 33 is formed, by means of which the closing unit 23 can be pivoted about a third pivot axis 35 relative to the sealing frame 22. In the closed state of the can lid 11, the third pivot axis 35 runs parallel to the second pivot axis 29, as can be seen in Fig. 2. Furthermore, the second pivot axis 29 and the third pivot axis 35 are arranged in opposite areas of the closing unit 23. In the closed position of the closing unit 23, the third pivot axis 35 is also located between the edge of the opening area 19 and the end of the sealing-frame-side section of the cranked tab 24 furthest from the sealing frame 22. Preferably, the third pivot axis 35 is located, as shown in Fig. 1, in the transition area between the sealing frame-side section of the cranked tab 24 and the closing unit-side section 26 of the beveled tab 24.The first joint 28 and the third joint 33 can be formed in a simple way by material weakening.

[0043] By means of the handling projection 32, a person can pivot the pull handle 27 upwards from the position shown in Fig. 2, which is pivoted towards the closing unit 23, about the second pivot axis 29 into a position projecting obliquely upwards from the closing unit 23. Accordingly, the second pivot axis 29 defines an upward pivot plane 39 for the pull handle 27, which extends perpendicular to the second pivot axis 29 and perpendicular to the metallic cover surface 12. When the pull handle 27 is in the home position according to Fig. 2, the upward pivot plane 39 passes centrally through the handling projection 32. As can also be seen in Fig. 2, the third pivot axis 35 is located between the first pivot axis 25 and the second pivot axis 29 with respect to the upward pivot plane 39. The first pivot axis 25 does not run perpendicularly, but obliquely to the upward pivot plane 39.Preferably, there is an angle of intersection 41 of at least 10° and at most 80° between the first pivot axis 25 and the pivoting plane 39, for example, approximately 45° as shown. This allows the closing unit 23 to pivot out of the pivoting plane 39 during the opening process, thus preventing nose contact when drinking from the can.

[0044] When a person wants to open the sealed can lid 11, they grasp the pull handle 27 on the handling projection 32 and pivot the pull handle 27 about the second pivot axis 29 into the position projecting away from the sealing unit 23. Then, by pulling the pull handle 27 within the upward pivot plane 39, the sealing unit 23 is released from the sealing frame 22 and pivoted away. In doing so, the sealing piece 21 is also pivoted upwards out of the lid plane to fully expose the opening area 19, as shown in Fig. 1. The opening process is facilitated by a marking 44, for example an arrow-shaped one, provided on the handling projection 32, which indicates the intended pulling direction 45.

[0045] Since the third pivot axis 35 is arranged between the first pivot axis 25 and the second pivot axis 29, when the pull handle 27 is pulled from the closed position, the closing unit 23 initially pivots about the third pivot axis 35 within the upward pivot plane 39. Since the third pivot axis 35 is also located in the closed position of the closing unit 23 between the end of the sealing frame-side section of the cranked tab 24 furthest from the sealing frame 22, the pivoting movement only transitions into a pivoting about the first pivot axis 25, which runs obliquely to the upward pivot plane 39, once the closing unit 23 has detached from the sealing frame 22. This second component of the pivoting movement pivots the assembly consisting of the closing unit 23 and the pull handle 27 out of the upward pivot plane 39. In the figure shown in Fig.In the open position of the closing unit 23 shown in Figure 1, it is spaced away from the pivoting plane 39. Accordingly, the can can be tilted within the pivoting plane 39 without any risk of unwanted nose contact.

[0046] The tilting plane 39 passes through the geometric center 47 of the opening area 19, through the geometric center 48 of the metallic lid surface 12, and through the edge point 49 of the opening area 19 that is closest to the outer perimeter 17 of the metallic lid surface 12. This facilitates the drinking process. A tilting movement of the beverage can for the purpose of drinking usually takes place within the tilting plane 39. Therefore, it is advantageous if the preferred drinking plane 40, which passes through the geometric center 48 of the metallic lid surface 12 and the outermost edge point 49, coincides with the tilting plane 39.

[0047] As can be seen in Figures 1 and 3, the closing unit 23 has an elastic support projection 55. This projection has a curved shape and extends parallel or obliquely to the metallic lid surface 12 when the closing unit 23 is in the closed position. When the closing unit 23 pivots away from the sealing frame 22, the elastic support projection 55 slides over the metallic lid surface 12 and is temporarily compressed. When the closing unit 23 reaches the open position, the support projection 55 holds the closing unit 23 in this position and prevents it from moving backward. Therefore, the closing unit 23 cannot pivot back unintentionally toward the pivoting plane 39. However, pivoting the closing unit 23 back to close the drinking opening 13 is possible with sufficient force to overcome the elasticity of the support projection 55.The strength of the support can be adjusted through dimensioning, shaping and material selection.

[0048] The sealing frame 22, the closing unit 23 and the pull handle 27 are preferably formed by a one-piece injection-molded part 57, which is shown individually in Fig. 3.

[0049] Due to the inventive design of the can lid 11, when drinking from the associated beverage can, there is no risk of the nose touching the closing unit 23 projecting from the sealing frame 22 or the pull handle 27, because these are located at a distance from the upward pivoting plane 39 and thus from the preferred drinking movement plane 40 when the drinking opening 13 is open. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to pull the pull handle 27 in an unusual direction, angled towards the body. The user is not even fully aware of the angled pivoting movement. Thus, the invention enables particularly comfortable drinking from resealable beverage cans with intuitive handling. Reference numerals:
