Abstract
Description
[0001] CONFIGURABLE LIGHTING DEVICES
[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0003] The present invention relates to lighting devices and, more specifically, to a lighting device designed to project light onto a surface through a “barrier” in order to create a shadow of the designed barrier, while allowing users to adjust the projection features to suit their preferences.
[0004] Additionally, the lighting device may incorporate one or more rechargeable batteries, enabling greater flexibility and freedom of placement in various indoor or outdoor locations without requiring a wired power connection.
[0005] BACKGROUND
[0006] Conventional lighting systems typically offer fixed light projections, requiring the user to choose and install different lighting devices or adjust the orientation of the device manually to achieve desired lighting effects and shadows. This limits flexibility in customizing light projections and may not be suitable for all surface types or user needs.
[0007] Various lighting devices have been developed for different applications, including general illumination, decorative lighting, and task lighting. While some lighting devices are designed to project light in specific patterns or shapes, many of these devices do not provide the level of customization or adaptability that users may require. Additionally, existing systems may be bulky, difficult to install, or not easily adjustable to accommodate different surface orientations or lighting preferences.
[0008] SUMMARY
[0009] Existing solutions lack the ability to modify the size or shape of the light projection, thus the shadow image, without using different types of devices, limiting their versatility and increasing costs for the end user. For instance, lighting devices with fixed light patterns can only illuminate certain areas in a predetermined manner, restricting the adaptability to varying surface sizes or specific design requirements. Thus, there remains a need for a lighting device that can be easily attached to various surfaces, provide customizable light projections, and offer increased flexibility in adjusting the size and shape of the light patterns, to fit exactly on the desired surface area, while also being adaptable to different surface orientations. The present invention addresses these shortcomings by providing a lighting device that can be securely attached to a surface, project light in customizable shapes through shadow effects, and allow easy adjustment of both the position of the light-defining components and the projected light pattern, enhancing the versatility of the lighting device for diverse applications. Furthermore, the device can be made portable (e.g., functioning as a battery-operated lighting fixture) for added convenience.
[0010] The invention is set out in the appended set of claims. New type of lighting devices for projecting light over a surface through a movable or adjustable “barrier” in order to create a shadow of the designed barrier while allowing users to adjust the projection features according to their needs are proposed. The lighting devices comprise an elongated support component, a shape or shadow defining element, blocking means, a light connector, and a cover element.
[0011] All the elements that constitute the lighting devices may be present in one or more units.
[0012] In a first aspect, a lighting device is proposed. The lighting device comprises an elongated support component. Such elongated support component comprises a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion is configured to be placed and / or attached to a surface.
[0013] The lighting device further comprises a shape defining element configured to be engaged to the elongated support component between the first portion and the second portion. The lighting device further comprises blocking means configured to removably fix the shape defining element to the elongated support component. The lighting device further comprises a light connector configured to be coupled to a light emitter and to be connected to the second portion of the elongated support component. The lighting device further comprises a cover element configured to be connected to the second portion of the elongated support component and to at least partially cover the light connector such that, when a light emitter is connected to the at least one light connector, a light emitted by the light emitter is oriented towards the at least one shape defining element so that the shape defining element defines a shaped shadow over the surface to which the elongated support component is attached. The surface to which the lighting device is placed and / or attached may be a horizontal surface (e.g., a roof, floor, table, or ceiling), an inclined surface (e.g., a slanted wall, ramp, or pitched roof), or a vertical surface (e.g., a wall, column, or door).
[0014] The term “elongated support component” is used here to denote any type of structural element that can function as a support for the lighting device. The elongated support component has at least two portions. The first portion refers to the section of the elongated support component closest to the surface where the lighting device is placed and / or attached, while the second portion denotes the section of the elongated support element nearest to the light connector.
[0015] The term “shape defining element” refers to any component capable of defining a shape creating its shadow when illuminated by light. The shape or shadow defining element may be a solid material element with a particular shape, which determines the shape of the projection through shading effects. The shape-defining or shadow defining element may be a cut out element with barriers and openings to let the light go through its openings, thereby creating specific and sharp shadows. As a result, the shape defining element not only casts shadows but also enables varying illumination at different positions across its surface. The shape defining element may comprise one or more sub-elements.
[0016] The term “blocking means” is used here to describe any type of element or mechanism suitable for removably fix the shape defining element to the elongated support component. The blocking means may comprise clips, clasps, screws, latches, magnets, hooks, velcro strips, snap-fit connectors, sliding locks, or other fastening devices that facilitate secure attachment and easy adjustment of the shape defining element to the elongated support component.
[0017] The term “light connector” refers to any type of connector suitable for being coupled with a light emitter, such as a bulb, light emitting diode (LED), light strip, light module, or optical fiber, among others. This may include connectors like sockets, plugs, terminals, or any other electrical or mechanical interfaces that facilitate the connection between the lighting device and its light-emitting source.
[0018] The term "cover element" refers to any type of surface designed to partially cover the light connector, ensuring that, when a light emitter is connected to the connector, the emitted light is directed towards the shape defining element. The cover element may have a convex surfaceand may include a reflective inner coating or layer to improve light dispersion when the light connector is coupled with a light emitter.
[0019] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the lighting device further comprises a power supply module configured to power the lighting device. The term "power supply module" refers to any component designed to provide electrical power to the lighting device. This may include power adapters, transformers, battery packs, integrated power circuits, or external power supplies that convert and regulate the voltage required for the operation of the lighting device. Examples include AC-to-DC converters, rechargeable battery modules, or constant current drivers for LEDs. The power supply module may be integrated with or attached to the elongated support component. The power supply module may comprise a rechargeable battery, which offers significant flexibility and freedom by enabling the device to be placed in virtually any location or position, whether indoors or outdoors, without reliance on a cable connection.
[0020] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the lighting device further comprises a light emitter designed to be coupled with the light connector, enabling the device to generate and project light onto the desired surface. The light emitter may include various types of light sources, such as a bulb, light emitting diode (LED), light strip, light module, or optical fiber, among others, depending on the specific application and user requirements. The coupling mechanism between the light emitter and the light connector is configured to ensure a secure and reliable connection, facilitating efficient energy transfer and optimal light output.
[0021] For instance, the connection may utilize a screw-in socket, a snap-fit design, magnetic coupling, or other mechanisms that allow for easy installation and replacement of the light emitter. This design ensures that the lighting device remains user-friendly and adaptable to evolving lighting technologies or user preferences.
[0022] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the shape defining element is configured to be engaged to the elongated support component at any position between the first portion and the second portion. This adjustability allows users to modify the position of the shape defining element along the elongated support component to control the size of the shadow projected onto the surface. For example, moving the shape defining element along the elongated support component toward the light connector, and consequently closer to thelight emitter when coupled, results in an increase in the size of the shaped shadow projected onto the surface. Conversely, moving the shape defining element along the elongated support component toward the surface, and thus further from the light emitter when coupled to the light connector, causes the size of the shaped shadow projected onto the surface to decrease. This size adjustment of the shaped shadow is facilitated by fixing and unfixing the shape defining element to the elongated support component using the blocking means, which ensures secure placement while maintaining ease of repositioning.
[0023] This functionality is particularly valuable for applications requiring precise alignment of specific figures, such as logos, text, or drawings, with the dimensions of the surface of interest. For example, when projecting a company logo onto a wall or floor, users can customize the size of the project to ensure that the shadow fits perfectly within the designated area, enhancing its visibility. Similarly, when projecting decorative patterns or informative text, the ability to resize the projected shadow allows for optimal adaptation to different surfaces or contexts.
[0024] The blocking means may be configured to removably secure the shape defining element to the elongated support component through form-fitting. This ensures a stable connection while enabling the element to be easily detached and repositioned as needed. Form-fitting mechanisms, such as grooves, notches, or interlocking components, enhance reliability and precision in positioning, ensuring that the shape defining element remains firmly in place during operation while allowing for seamless adjustments when required. This design adds to the versatility and user-friendliness of the lighting device, making it suitable for both static and dynamic lighting applications.
[0025] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the shape defining element is designed to be replaceable by endless designs of shape barrier components, offering enhanced flexibility and customization. By swapping the shape defining element, users can easily alter the projected shadows to match their preferences or specific requirements, eliminating the need to replace the entire lighting device. This feature not only reduces costs but also simplifies the process of adapting the device for different applications or environments.
[0026] Furthermore, multiple shape defining elements can be used in combination to generate more complex or intricate shapes. For instance, overlapping or layering various elements may allow users to create custom shadow patterns, such as logos, decorative motifs, or text, tailored tothe dimensions and characteristics of the surface onto which the light is projected. This modular approach enhances the versatility of the lighting device, making it suitable for a wide range of purposes, from functional lighting to aesthetic or branding applications.
[0027] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the elongated support component may include an adjustable system, such as an arm, designed to position the lighting device at various angles relative to the surface. This adjustable system enhances the versatility of the lighting device by enabling users to direct the light projection precisely where it is needed, accommodating a wide range of applications and environments. The adjustable system may incorporate various mechanisms to facilitate its flexibility, such as hinges, ball joints, telescopic sections, or rotational elements. These mechanisms allow for smooth and precise adjustments, enabling the lighting device to tilt, swivel, or extend to achieve the desired angle and distance from the surface. This feature is particularly beneficial for scenarios requiring dynamic lighting configurations, such as illuminating artwork, highlighting architectural features, or projecting patterns onto irregular or slanted surfaces. The ability to adjust the angle ensures that the light projection aligns perfectly with the surface of interest, whether it is horizontal, vertical, or inclined. Furthermore, the adjustable system may include locking mechanisms, such as friction locks, clamps, or detents, to securely hold the lighting device in the selected position during operation. These mechanisms ensure stability and prevent unintended movement, even in environments subject to vibrations or external forces.
[0028] In some embodiments, the system may also comprise markings or stops to aid users in achieving consistent and repeatable positioning for specific lighting effects.
[0029] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations, the cover element is configured to be detachable, offering increased flexibility, ease of maintenance, and customization options for the lighting device. The detachable configuration allows users to remove, replace, or modify the cover element as needed, enhancing the device's adaptability for various applications and user preferences. The detachment mechanism for the cover element may include snap-fit connectors, magnetic fasteners, threaded mounts, or simple latches, providing a secure attachment during operation while allowing easy removal when necessary. This enables quick and convenient access to the internal components of the lighting device, such as the light emitter or shape defining element, for cleaning, repair, or replacement. In addition, the cover element may have a convex surface and may include a reflective inner coating or layer specifically designed to improve light dispersion when the light connector is coupled with a light emitter. This design ensures that light is directed efficiently and uniformly towards the desired surface or through the shape defining element, optimizing the clarity and quality of the projected shadow pattern. The convex shape of the cover element may also contribute to focusing or spreading the emitted light, depending on the specific configuration and requirements.
[0030] In some embodiments, compatible with all the configurations described, the lighting device further comprises a control system configured to adjust different parameters of the light emitted when the at least one light connector is coupled to a light emitter, such as the intensity and / or color. This control system significantly enhances the functionality by providing a high degree of customization and adaptability for various lighting applications. The control system may offer both manual and automated adjustment options. As an example, for intensity control, it may allow users to fine-tune the brightness of the emitted light. For color control, the system may support transitions between various color temperatures — such as warm white, neutral white, and cool white — as well as a spectrum of colors in RGB lighting setups. This versatility makes the device suitable for a wide range of scenarios, from functional lighting in workspaces to decorative or mood-enhancing lighting in residential or commercial spaces. Additionally, the control system may include a timer feature, allowing users to schedule when the lighting device turns on or off, or define specific operating durations. This functionality ensures the device operates efficiently, minimizing energy consumption and providing added convenience for daily use.
[0031] The control system may be implemented through different interfaces, including physical controls, such as rotary knobs, push buttons, or slide switches integrated into the device, as well as digital interfaces like touch panels or wireless controllers. For advanced applications, the system may include smart features, enabling control via mobile apps, voice commands, or integration with home automation platforms. This connectivity allows users to create dynamic lighting schedules, sync the lighting with music or video content, or activate specific lighting scenes for different occasions.
[0032] Moreover, the control system may incorporate sensors, such as ambient light or motion detectors, to enable automated adjustments based on environmental conditions. For example, the device could automatically dim or brighten the light depending on the ambient light levels in the room or activate specific color settings in response to detected motion. These features enhance energy efficiency and add convenience, making the lighting device more intelligent and responsive. In some configurations, the control system may support multiple control points, enabling adjustments from various locations. For instance, wall-mounted panels, handheld remotes, or mobile devices could all provide access to the same lighting controls, ensuring flexibility and ease of use.

[0039] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS
[0040] Figure 1 A schematically illustrates a lighting device (1) configured to project light over a surface (11) and generate a shaped shadow (10). The lighting device (1) comprises an elongated support component (2), which comprises a first portion (3) and a second portion (4), wherein the first portion (3) is configured to be placed and / or attached to the surface (11). In the lighting device illustrated in Fig. 1A, the first portion (3) and the second portion (4) correspond to opposite ends of the elongated support component (2).The lighting device (1) further comprises a shape defining element (5) configured to be engaged to the elongated support component (2) between the first portion (3) and the second portion (4). The lighting device (1) also comprises blocking means (6) configured to removably fix the shape defining element (5) to the elongated support component (2). The lighting device (1) further comprises a light connector (7) configured to be coupled to a light emitter (9) and to be connected to the second portion (4) of the elongated support component (2). The shape defining element (5), when fixed by the blocking means (6) to the elongated support component (2), is placed between the light connector (7) and the surface (11).
[0041] As it is appreciated in Figs. 1A-4, the cover element (8) is configured to be connected to the second portion (4) of the elongated support component (2) and to at least partially cover the light connector (7) such that, when a light emitter (9) is coupled to the light connector (7), the light emitted by the light emitter (9) is oriented towards the shape defining element (5), wherein the shape defining element (5) is configured to define a shaped shadow (10) over the surface (11). The light connector (7) is positioned along the elongated support component (2) between the cover element (8) and the shape defining element (5).
[0042] In Figs. 1A-4, the cover element (8) may include a convex region configured to optimize the distribution of light. Additionally, the cover element (8) may comprise a reflective inner surface, strategically configured to enhance light dispersion when the light connector (7) is coupled to a light emitter (9). This reflective inner area can help redirect light efficiently, minimizing losses and ensuring uniform illumination across the intended area. The cover element (8) may be configured to be detachable, offering increased flexibility, ease of maintenance, and customization options for the lighting device. The detachment mechanism for the cover element (8) may include snap-fit connectors, magnetic fasteners, threaded mounts, or simple latches, providing a secure attachment during operation while allowing easy removal when necessary. This enables quick and convenient access to the internal components of the lighting device (1), such as the light emitter (9) or shape defining element (5), for cleaning, repair, or replacement (see Figs. 3 and 4).
[0043] Figure 1B shows the lighting device (1) illustrated in Fig. 1A, wherein the shape defining element (5) is configured to be engaged to the elongated support component (2) at any position between the first portion (3) and the second portion (4). In Fig. 1A, the shape defining element (5), when fixed by the blocking means (6) to the elongated support component (2), is placedbetween the light connector (7) - and thus the cover element (8) and the light emitter (9) when it is coupled to the light connector (7) - and the surface (11). Specifically, the shape defining element (5) is positioned closer to the light connector (7) - and, consequently, to the second portion (4) - than to the surface (11) and the first portion (3). In Fig. 1B, instead, the shape defining element (5) has been unfixed by the blocking means (6) from its former position (see Fig. 1A) and fixed by the blocking means (6) to a different position along the elongated support component (2). In particular, Fig. 1B illustrates a configuration in which the shape defining element (5) is positioned approximately equidistant from the second portion (4) and the first portion (3), close to the midpoint of the elongated support component (2).
[0044] The size of the shaped shadow (10) projected onto the surface (11) is determined by the position of the shape defining element (5) along the elongated support component (2) and its relative distance to both the light connector (7) - and thus to the light emitter (9) - and the surface (11). Consequently, in Fig. 1B, the size of the shaped shadow (10) defined over the surface (11) by the shape defining element (5) when a light emitter (9) is coupled to the light connector (7) differs from the shaped shadow (10) defined over the surface (11) by the lighting device (1) in Fig. 1A. Specifically, when the shape defining element (5) is moved closer to the light connector (7), the distance between the shape defining element (5) and the light emitter (9) is reduced, causing the light to diverge more widely after passing through or around the shape defining element (5). As a result, the shaped shadow (10) projected onto the surface (11) becomes larger. In essence, the closer the shape defining element (5) is to the light connector (7), the more pronounced the shadow effect becomes, as the divergence of light rays increases. Conversely, when the shape defining element (5) is moved along the elongated support component (2) toward the surface (11), it moves further away from the light connector (7) and thus from light emitter (9). This increased distance between the shape defining element (5) and the light emitter (9) causes the light rays passing through or around the shape defining element (5) to converge more narrowly, resulting in a smaller shaped shadow (10) being cast onto the surface (11). The farther the shape defining element (5) is from the light emitter (9), the more focused the shadow appears, with its size gradually decreasing.
[0045] This relationship between the distance of the shape defining element (5) from the light connector (7) - and thus from the light emitter (9) when coupled to the light connector (7) - and the resulting shaped shadow (10) size illustrates how the position of the shape definingelement (5) allows for precise control over the projection of the shaped shadow (10) onto the surface (11). This effect on the size of the shaped shadow (10) is also exemplified in Fig. 1C.
[0046] Figure 1C shows the lighting device (1) depicted in Figures 1A and 1 B, wherein the shape defining element (5) is configured to be engaged to the elongated support component (2) at any position between the first portion (3) and the second portion (4). However, in contrast to Fig. 1B, Fig. 1C illustrates a configuration in which the shape defining element (5), when fixed by the blocking means (6) to the elongated support component (2), is positioned closer to the surface (11) - and, consequently, to the first portion (3) - than to the light connector (7) and the second portion (4). Therefore, the size of the shaped shadow (10) defined over the surface (11) by the shape defining element (5) when light emitted by a light emitter (9) coupled to the light connector (7) in Fig. 1C differs from the shaped shadow (10) defined over the surface (11) by the lighting device (1) in Figures 1Aand 1B. Specifically, moving the shape defining element (5) along the elongated support component (2) toward the surface (11), and consequently further away to the light emitter (9) when coupled to the light connector (7), results in an decrease in the size of the shaped shadow (10) projected onto the surface (11) when the light emitter (9) emits light.
[0047] The lighting device (1) according to Figures 1A, 1B, and 1C may further comprise elements not depicted in the figure, all of which are compatible with one another, such as a power supply module configured to power the lighting device, a light emitter (9) configured to be coupled to the at least one light connector (7), an adjustable system configured to position and / or secure the lighting device (1) at different positions relative to the surface (11), and / or a control system configured to adjust different parameters of the light emitted when the light connector (7) is coupled to a light emitter (9).
[0048] Figure 2 schematically illustrates an exploded view of a lighting device according to the embodiments shown in Figures 1A, 1B and 1C. As previously described, the lighting device (1) comprises an elongated support component (2), which comprises a first portion (3) and a second portion (4), wherein the first portion (3) is configured to be placed and / or attached to the surface (11). The lighting device (1) further comprises a shape defining element (5) configured to be engaged to the elongated support component (2) between the first portion (3) and the second portion (4). The lighting device (1) also comprises blocking means (6) configured to removably fix the shape defining element (5) to the elongated support component(2). The lighting device (1) further comprises a light connector (7) configured to be coupled to a light emitter (9) and to be connected to the second portion (4) of the elongated support component (2). The lighting device (1) further comprises a cover element (8) configured to be connected to the second portion (4) of the elongated support component (2) and to at least partially cover the light connector (7) such that, when a light emitter (9) is coupled to the light connector (7), the light emitted by the light emitter (9) is oriented towards the shape defining element (5), wherein the shape defining element (5) is configured to define a shadow (10) over the surface (11).
[0049] Figure 3 illustrates an exploded view of a lighting device (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention. The lighting device (1) represented comprises the same elements as the lighting devices depicted in Figures 1A-2. However, in the lighting device (1) shown in Fig.
[0050] 3 the shape defining element (5) is replaceable. As it is appreciated, the shape of the shape defining element (5) differs from that illustrated in Figures 1A-2. This replacement of the shape defining elements (5) is enabled by the configuration of the lighting device (1). For example, by utilizing the blocking means (6) to unfix the shape defining element (5), it can be removed and replaced by sliding it through either end, the first portion (3) or the second portion (4), of the elongated support component (2). The shape defining element may also be replaced without the need to slide it through the elongated support component (2). Instead, it can be disassembled into multiple parts, allowing it to be released directly from the elongated support component (2). This configuration is compatible with all the previously described embodiments, meaning the shape defining element (5) may be replaceable in each of the aforementioned lighting devices (1).
[0051] Figure 4 schematically illustrates an exploded view of a lighting device (1) according to an embodiment of the present invention. The lighting device (1) corresponds to the one illustrated in Figures 1A-3, with the shape defining element (5) replaced by a different element, as explained in Figure 3.
[0052] The lighting devices according to Figs. 2-4 may further comprise elements not depicted in the figure, all of which are compatible with one another, such as a power supply module configured to power the lighting device, a light emitter (9) configured to be coupled to the at least one light connector (7), an adjustable system (12) configured to position and / or secure the lighting device (1) at different positions relative to the surface (11), and / or a control system configuredto adjust different parameters of the light emitted when the at least one light connector is coupled to a light emitter (9).
[0053] Although only some embodiments have been disclosed herein, other alternatives, modifications, uses and / or equivalents thereof are possible. Furthermore, all possible combinations of the described examples are also covered. Thus, the scope of the present disclosure should not be limited by particular embodiments but should be determined only by a fair reading of the claims that follow. If reference signs related to drawings are placed in parentheses in a claim, they are solely for attempting to increase the intelligibility of the claim and shall not be construed as limiting the scope of the claim.
