[0006] As global population ages, the prevalence of dementia continues to rise worldwide, negatively impacting families, the economy, and healthcare services. In recent years, clinical research has increasingly focused on early detection of dementia. Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are considered to be in a transitional stage between healthy aging and dementia, such as AD (Chang et al., 2010). As such, global research has concentrated on screening patients with MCI and distinguishing them from healthy individual undergoing normal aging.
[0007] Neuropsychological cognitive assessment plays a crucial role in screening for MCI. Numerous scientific studies have shown that neuropsychological tests can effectively detect early signs of cognitive dysfunction (Belleville et al., 2017; Chang et al., 2020), enabling earlier treatment and intervention, which may delay or prevent further cognitive decline and improve patients' quality of life. Early screening also helps distinguish between normal aging and potential pathological changes. [0008] objective methods to measure cognitive function, early signs of cognitive impairment can be detected, and the risk of progressing to dementia over several years can be predicted.
[0009] Neuropsychological assessments can also identify an individual's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, aiding in personalized and precise intervention for future health management.
[0010] MCI represents a group of individuals at higher risk of developing dementia. Due to the heterogeneity of its clinical presentation, MCI is categorized into four subtypes based on two dimensions: amnestic and non-amnestic, and single or multiple cognitive domain impairments. Amnestic MCI (aMCI), with either single or multiple cognitive domain impairments, is particularly associated with the progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals with aMCI affecting multiple domains, including language, are more likely to develop AD-type dementia than those with memory impairment alone. Thus, for aMCI individuals, clinical assessment should extend beyond episodic memory impairment to evaluate other cognitive domains to determine dementia risk.
[0011] Although previous research has provided ample evidence that neuropsychological tests can effectively differentiate normal from abnormal aging, a highly sensitive and time-efficient assessment scheme is still lacking. Take the commonly used MMSE tool as an example: it is the most prevalent screening tool in clinical settings and only takes ten minutes to administer, yet its sensitivity in detecting aMCI is less than 50% (Arevalo-Rodriguez et al., 2021), especially in early-stage patients. This limitation arises because the MMSE is a brief, general cognitive assessment tool that was not originally designed for the aMCI population, making it insufficient to capture all the changes associated with aMCI. While detailed neuropsychological assessments significantly increase the accuracy of identifying MCI, they often take several hours, making them impractical for widespread use. Therefore, developing a sensitive and practical assessment scheme would better distinguish abnormal cognitive changes associated with aging, identify individuals with aMCI earlier, and provide the healthcare system with more time and resources for treatment and support plans, ultimately reducing medical costs and increasing efficiency. Additionally, it is essential to have an assessment test that accommodates aging patients with reduced or impaired vision. Society would be better equipped to address the challenges of an aging population by providing appropriate social support and health management for those with MCI.

The method comprises delivering an evaluation scheme having one or more tests to an individual; obtaining the individual’s responses to the one or more tests; generating an evaluation score of the individual based on the individual’s responses; and generating an aMCI status of the individual based on the evaluation score of the individual.

Similar patterns have been observed in aMCI patients, whose language dysfunction is primarily reflected in vocabulary and semantic aspects, including deficits in verbal fluency and confrontation naming. Additionally, aMCI individuals are more prone to making semantically related errors in naming tasks, such as saying "bear" instead of "tiger," compared to other types of naming errors. [0093] Overall, in naming tests, the aMCI group tends to fail more frequently in biological categories (e.g., vegetables, fruits, animals) than in non-biological categories (e.g., tools, clothing), indicating that aMCI individuals struggle with semantic categories that share more common attributes and fewer unique features. Therefore, this assessment scheme includes a semantic verbal fluency test to evaluate language generation, semantic memory, executive function, and attention. It measures how many words a participant can generate within a specific semantic category (e.g., "animals," "fruits," or "city names") in a limited time frame, such as one minute, reflecting the participant's ability to rapidly retrieve and organize language information from memory. A lower score may indicate cognitive impairment, particularly in language generation, memory retrieval, or executive function. An example of this test question is: "You have one minute to name as many fruits as you can. Try to list as many as possible without repeating."
[0094] Research has extensively explored language impairments at the lexical-semantic level in MCI, such as in naming and fluency tests, while also observing deficits beyond these areas. Studies using comprehensive language testing tools have shown that aMCI patients exhibit deficits in language tasks that extend beyond lexical-semantic processing, such as sentence comprehension. Other research focusing on non-lexical and non-semantic language processing has found that older aMCI patients perform significantly worse compared to healthy controls. The aMCI patients were recruited from a local hospital’s memory clinic, and the HC participants were recruited from nearby community residents. All participants were Asian and native Mandarin speakers. Individuals with neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, stroke, and head injury), psychiatric illnesses, substance abuse (e.g., alcohol and illegal drugs), or clinically significant sensory impairments (e.g., blindness or severe hearing loss) were excluded.
