Abstract

The present disclosure provides systems for weightlifting and resistance training that incorporate interchangeable couplers for improved functionality and adaptability. Examples include a first exercise device configured for resistance training and comprising one or more first couplers disposed on one or more exterior surfaces of the first exercise device, and a second exercise device comprising a second coupler configured to be releasably coupled to a first coupler of the one or more first couplers. In some examples, the one or more first couplers being quick connect type couplers.

These devices are commonly utilized in both commercial gyms and home workout environments, supporting a variety of exercise routines aimed at improving muscular strength, endurance, and overall physical health. Typically, each device is designed for specific movements and grip positions, such as pressing, curling, or swinging, and is constructed with fixed shafts, handles, or weight plates. [0023] Dumbbell devices for weightlifting exercises typically include a shaft that can be gripped by a user. Weights may be attached, either rigidly secured or fixed, onto each end of the shaft for resistance. A user generally lifts the weighted shaft for exercise training.

[0024] One drawback of conventional dumbbell systems is the limited exercises that may be performed using a single dumbbell. Due to conventional systems typically including a single shaft located between the weighs, a user typically performs lifting exercises by gripping the shaft and keeping it at a substantially level orientation. This limitation can be disadvantageous, for example, where a user would like to perform other types of exercises that may benefit from different shaft orientation and / or grip location variation. In this case, the user may be forced to obtain different devices that safely accommodate different grip locations.

[0025] In some situations, a user may attempt to use a conventional dumbbell in alternative orientations, for example, by gripping portions of the dumbbell other than the shaft (e.g., by gripping the weights directly). However, conventional dumbbells may not be designed for gripping the end weight and such misuse can damage the device and / or cause injury to the user.

[0026] Accordingly, the examples disclosed herein provide for a multi-functional exercise system that enables flexible, multi-functional user engagement with exercise devices. In examples, the multi-functional exercise system includes a first exercise device, such as a dumbbell or other weighted device that can be gripped by a user for resistance training, which comprises one or more couplers configured to releasably couple the first exercise device to a coupler of a second exercise device. By coupling the first exercise device to the secondPATENT APPLICATION Docket No.103191-00105exercise device, the first exercise device can be orientated in a number of different orientations, based on the second exercise device, to provide for multi-functional user engagement.

[0027] FIGS. 1A-1L illustrates examples of various configurations of a multifunctional exercise system, in accordance with examples of the present disclosure. FIGS. 1 A-1L depicts configurations 100A-100L of the multi-functional exercise system used by a user U for resistance exercises. In the examples of FIGS. 1 A-1L, the multi-functional exercise system includes a first exercise device 110 orientated in various orientations for multi-functional user engagement with the first device 100. The first exercise device 110 includes one or more couplers 112 configured to releasably couple the first exercise device 110 to a coupler 122 of a second exercise device 120.

[0028] In an illustrative example, the first exercise device 110 may be provided as a dumbbell 200. FIGS. 2A-2B illustrate an example of dumbbell 200, in accordance with an example of the present disclosure. The dumbbell 200 includes a shaft 202 and weights 204, 206 coupled to each end of the shaft 202. In examples, the weights 204, 206 may be rigidly secured to the ends of shaft 202, affixed thereto, or otherwise removably coupled to the ends of shaft 202. In other examples, the weights 204, 206 may be integrated with the shaft 202 (e.g., formed of an integral body).

[0029] The weights 204, 206 may include first couplers 208, 210 disposed on a respective weight 204, 206. For example, weight 204 may comprise a first coupler 208 and weight 206 may comprise a first coupler 210. In an example, the first couplers 208, 210 may be provided on an outer surface 212, 214 (also referred to as exterior surface) of a respective weight 204, 206. In some examples, the first couplers 208, 210 may be coaxial with the shaft 202, as shown in FIGS. 2A-2B. In another example, the first couplers may be disposed along an axis that intersects the axis of the shaft (e.g., substantially perpendicular or otherwise orientated in a non-parallel orientation). For example, first couplers 208, 210 may be provided on a side surface of weights 204, 206, such as side surface 216 and 218 in an example.

For example, weight 204 may comprise first coupler 208, as well as one or more additional first couplers on the outer surface 212 and / or other surfaces (e.g., side surface 216). [0031] In the example of FIGS. 2A-2B, the first couplers 208, 210 may be located in respective recesses 220, 222. Recesses 220, 222 may be formed in the respective weights 204, 206, such that the respective recesses 220, 222 extends from the outer surface 212, 214 into the weight toward the shaft 202. By providing respective recesses 220, 222, in some examples, the first couplers 208, 210 may be flush or substantially flush with their respective weights 204, 206. Providing a flush or substantially flush relation, snagging or otherwise catching of the first couplers 208, 210 on surrounding structures or articles during use can be avoided, thereby not impairing typical use of the dumbbell 200 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 1 A).

[0032] In examples, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be provided as any type of coupler configured for releasably coupling to a counterpart coupler. In an example, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be provided as male plugs configured to be received (e.g., inserted into) and couple to a female receptacle. In some example, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be configured for quick connect (or quick release) coupling. In another example, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be configured for push-on (or snap-on) coupling. In various examples, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be provided may be provided as any type of air hose fitting (also known as an air-line fitting), as known in the art. In an illustrative example, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be provided as threaded fitting, such as but not limited to, a 1 / 4-inch NPT (National Pipe Thread) fitting.

[0033] As alluded to above, examples herein can provide for a quick connect coupling interface, which may include a male plug and female receptable receptacle configured to be connected and disconnected without tools while maintaining a load-bearing connection suitable for loads during resistance training, e.g., weight lifting. The male plug and the female receptacle may be configured as an air hose-style quick-connect coupler. FIG. 2C illustrates an example quick connect type coupling interface comprising a male plug 230 that may be implemented as one more of first couplers 208, 210 and FIGS. 2D-2F illustrates an example female receptacle 240 that may be as a second coupler configured to receive and couple to the male plug. FIGS. 2C-2F is an example of a quick connect type coupler, in accordance with examples herein. The quick connect type coupler can be similar to air hose fitting having functionality similar to quick connect fittings (also referred to as push fittings).

[0034] The male plug 230 can include an elongated plug body 232 defining a longitudinal axis 231 and having a proximal end 233 and a distal end 234. The distal end 234PATENT APPLICATION Docket No.103191-00105can include a lead-in nose 235 having a tapered or rounded profile configured to guide insertion into the female receptacle. The plug body 232 can further include at least one circumferential retention feature 236 located axially between the lead-in nose 235 and the proximal end 233. The circumferential retention feature 236 can be implemented as an annular groove, a shoulder, a retention ring, or another profile configured to interface with one or more locking members of the female receptacle 240 to resist axial withdrawal when the couplers are in a locked state. In some examples, the male plug 230 may further include a sealing land formed in a cylindrical surface 237 between the retention feature 236 and the proximal end 233, such as a recessed surface extending radially from cylindrical surface 237 toward the longitudinal axis 231 and configured to retain and compress an elastomeric seal along an internal surface of the female receptacle 240. The proximal end 233 of the male plug 230 can include a mounting portion 238 configured to be secured to an exercise implement, including, for example, a threaded shank, a press-fit stem, a welded boss, a riveted post, a pinned stem, or an integrally formed body portion. In the example of FIG. 2C, the mounting portion 238 is provided as a threaded shank (also referred to as a male threaded fitting) that can interface with a female threaded fitting formed, e.g., in one of recesses 220, 222 so to removably fix the male plug 230 in a respective recess.

[0035] In the example of FIG. 2C, the male plug 230 is shown as hollow along the longitudinal axis 231 providing a channel, for example, for fluid flow along the length of the elongated plug body 232. However, in some examples, the male plug 230 may be a solid body, for example, to provide rigidity and strength to minimized deformation or breakage during use with exercise devices as described herein.

[0036] The female receptacle 240 can include a receptacle body 242 having a first end 252 and a second end 250. FIG. 2D depicts a side view of the female receptacle 240, FIG. 2E depicts female receptacle 240 when viewed from the first end 252, and FIG. 2F depicts female receptacle 240 view from the second end 250. The receptacle body 242 defining a longitudinal bore 241 configured to receive the male plug 230 along a coupling axis 243. The longitudinal bore 241 can include an opening at the first end 252 into which the male plug 230 can be inserted, a cavity configured to receive the male plug, and an internal stop surface 244 configured to limit insertion depth of the male plug through contact with the retention feature 236. The female receptacle 240 can include one or more locking members (one of which isPATENT APPLICATION Docket No.103191-00105shown as locking member 245) positioned to engage the circumferential retention feature 236 of the male plug 230 when the male plug 230 is inserted into the cavity. For example, the circumferential retention feature 236 may pass the locking members during insertion, which may operate to restrain the circumferential retention feature 236 while in the locked state. The locking members can be implemented as radially movable locking balls, rollers, pawls, or segments disposed within respective radial apertures or seats of the receptacle body 242. The locking members can be retained by an axially movable sleeve 246 that is disposed around the outer surface of receptacle body 242. The sleeve 246 can be biased by a spring 247 toward a locked position in which the sleeve 246 constrains the locking members radially inward so that the locking members engage the retention feature of the male plug and resist withdrawal.

[0037] To couple the male plug 230 and female receptacle 240, the male plug 230 is inserted into the opening of the female receptacle 240. During insertion, the sleeve 246 can be operated to compress the spring 247 which releases the locking members and lead-in nose 235 of the male plug 230 can cam the locking members radially outward against the sleeve 246. When the retention feature 236 aligns or otherwise passes the locking members, the locking members may be released so to move radially inward toward the axis 243 to restrain the retention feature 236 in a locked position. At this point, the sleeve 246 returns to the locked position under spring bias. In the locked position, the elastomeric seal (if present) can form a seal against the sealing land of the male plug 230, and the retention feature 236 and locking members can cooperate to resist axial separation during exercise use.

[0038] To decouple the male plug 230 and female receptacle 240, a user can actuate the sleeve 246 by translating the sleeve 246 axially relative to the receptacle body 242 from the locked position toward an unlocked position. In the unlocked position, the sleeve 246 permits the locking members to move radially outward, thereby disengaging from the retention feature 236 of the male plug 230 and allowing the male plug 230 to be withdrawn. The sleeve 246 can return to the locked position after release due to the spring bias. As shown in FIG. 2D, the sleeve 246 may include one or more knurled or otherwise textured surfaces 249 (e.g., rubber attachments disposed thereon) to provide tactile feel and enhance grip when operated by the user.

The mounting portion 248 can include, for example, a threaded shank, a press-fit stem, a welded boss, a riveted post, a pinned stem, or an integrally formed body portion. In the example of FIGS. 2D and 2E, the mounting portion 248 is provided as a threaded bore (also referred to as a female threaded fitting) that can interface with a male threaded fitting. For example, as described below in connection with FIG. 33. In another example, the mounting portion may be provided as a threaded shank or male threaded fitting that can interface with a female threaded fitting formed, so to removably fix the female receptacle to an exercise device. For example, FIG. 24 illustrates a female receptacle having a male threaded fitting as mounting portion 248.

[0040] In various examples, a male plug 230 may be disposed in a cavity of a cylindrical housing that can be formed into, affixed, or otherwise attached to an exercise device. The cavity may be provided as the recess in which the male plug 230 is disposed. As described above, the male plug 230 may be flush or substantially flush with an upper edge of the cylindrical housing.

[0041] Quick-connect coupling interfaces, such as those of FIGS. 2C-2E may be advantageous to enable use of the exercise in a plurality of orientations. In such examples, the coupling interface can be configured to directly mate and positively lock to provide a loadbearing connection that reliably transfers exercise loads between coupled implements during dynamic movements, including movements that impose varying tensile forces, compressive forces, shear forces, and bending moments. The positive locking behavior of a quick-connect coupling interface can reduce the likelihood of inadvertent separation as compared to couplers that rely primarily on frictional engagement, flexible straps, or user-dependent tightening, while also providing repeatable engagement characteristics over repeated coupling cycles.

[0042] Moreover, the quick-connect coupling interface can provide intuitive connection and disconnection that can be performed rapidly and without extra tools. For example, the coupling can be achieved by inserting a male plug into a female receptacle to engage a retention feature in a locked state, and can be decoupled by actuation of a movable sleeve that releases the engagement to permit withdrawal of the male plug. This rapid coupling behavior can allow a user to switch among multiple attachments and grip configurations in rapid succession, enabling reconfiguration of the system between exercises while maintaining a secure, load-bearing connection during use.PATENT APPLICATION Docket No.103191-00105

[0043] Furthermore, the use of quick-connect coupling interface across multiple different exercise devices further enables a modular ecosystem in which a single exercise device can be selectively coupled to different attachments, such as rigid handles, straight bars, curl bars, rope attachments, cable-machine attachments, or other implements, to support the dumbbell in a plurality of orientations. In such examples, the coupling interface can provide a direct, load-bearing mechanical connection between the implements, thereby enabling controlled transfer of exercise loads and stable support of the dumbbell by the attachment in the selected orientation, while still permitting the dumbbell to be used as a stand-alone dumbbell when uncoupled.

[0044] As alluded to above, the one or more first couplers 208, 210 can be configured to releasably couple the dumbbell 200 to a second coupler of a second exercise device. FIGS.3A-3K illustrate various examples of a second exercise devices 300A-300K, each of which comprises a second coupler 302A-302K (collectively referred to herein as second couplers 302 or singularly as second coupler 302) configured to be releasable coupled to either of the first couplers of the first exercise device (e.g., either of the first couplers 208, 210 of dumbbell 200).

In an example, second couplers 302 may be provided as female receptacles configured to receive and couple with a male plug. In some example, one or more of first couplers 208, 210 may be configured for quick connect (or quick release) coupling. In another example, second couplers 302 may be configured for push-on (or snap-on) coupling. Thus, second couplers 302 may be provided as quick connect, snap-fittable, and / or releasably lockable devices. In various examples, second couplers 302 may be provided may be provided as any type of air hose fitting, as known in the art. In an illustrative example, second couplers 302 may be provided as threaded fitting, such as but not limited to, a 1 / 4-inch NPT (National Pipe Thread) fitting. In an example, the second couplers 302 may be female threaded fitting configured to receive a male threaded fitting.

FIGS. 3A-3K depict certain non-limiting examples of the types of exercises devices 300A-300K that may be implemented as the second exercise device 120 shown in FIGS. 1B-1L. By providing flexibility to couple various types of exercises devices to the dumbbell 200, the multi-functional exercise system can provide for flexible, multi-functional engagement by the user U, in which the dumbbell 200 can be used in various orientations without risk of damage to the devices or injury to user U.

[0048] For example, FIG. 3A illustrates a second exercise device 120 implemented as a straight bar attachment 300A. Straight bar attachment 300A comprises a second coupler 302A disposed perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to a shaft 304A. The shaft 304A comprises grips attachments 306A (e.g., knurled portions of shaft 304A and / or rubber attachments disposed thereon) provided, for example, on each end of shaft 304A. IK, an illustrative example of configuration 100K of the multi-functional exercise system is shown, in which second exercise device 120 is implemented as a straight bar attachment 300A releasably coupled to the first exercise device 110 implemented as the dumbbell 200. In this example, user U can grip the grip attachments 306A of straight bar attachment 300 A, while the dumbbell 200 hangs in a vertical orientation via releasably coupling of one of first couplers 208,210 and second couplers 302 A. The user U may be able to perform bicep curls, deadlifts, or any resistance exercise desired.

[0050] FIG. 3B illustrates an example a second exercise device 120 implemented as an abdominal wheel attachment 300B. Abdominal wheel attachment 300B comprises a second coupler 302B situated coaxially with a shaft 304B. The shaft 304B comprises a grip attachment 306B (e.g., knurled portions of shaft 304A and / or rubber attachments disposed thereon). As shown in FIG. 3B, the second coupler 302B is provided at an end of the shaft 304B. In this example, abdominal wheel attachments 300B can be releasably coupled to weights 204,206 via coupling of second couplers 302B to first couplers 208,210. The user U can grip the grip attachments 306B to perform abdominal exercise.

Handle attachment 300C comprises a handle body 304C having a grip attachment 306C on one end and a second coupler 302C disposed at another end opposite the grip attachment 306B (e.g., knurled portions of shaft 304A and / or rubber attachments disposed thereon). The handle body 304C may have a tubular or cylindrical body in a rounded square or rounded rectangular configuration, as shown in FIG. 3C. In some examples, the second coupler 302C can be affixed to handle body 304C. In another example, the second coupler 302C may be configured to slidably rotate about an axis of the end of handle body 304C relative to end of the handle body 304C. For example, the second coupler 302C may be attached to the end of handle body 304C using rotating swivel center mechanism 308C (e.g., a collar that encircles the end of handle body 304C) that provides a pivot point about the axis of the end of the handle body 304C.

[0053] Referring to FIG. 1G, an illustrative example of configuration 100C of the multi-functional exercise system is shown, in which second exercise device 120 is implemented as one or more handle attachments 300C releasably coupled to the first exercise device 110 implemented as the dumbbell 200. In these examples, one or more handle attachments 300C can be releasably coupled to one or more of weights 204,206 via coupling of second couplers 302C to first couplers 208,210. The user U can grip the grip attachments 306C to perform various exercises, such as but not limited to, deadlifts, bicep curls, and overhead press, as shown in FIG. 1C.

In some examples, a clamping mechanism 306D can be provided configured to reduce the diameter of an opening 308D of the collar body 304D through user operation. For example, a user may rotate clamping mechanism 306D to cause the diameter of opening 308D to be reduced in size, so to cause a clamping down on another element within the opening 308D to provide a releasable friction fit therebetween. In another example, the clamping mechanism 306D may be configured for a pinch-fit, whereby clamping mechanism 306D can be rotated via a threaded fitting so to extend into opening 308D and pinch an element between the clamping mechanism 306D and an opposing surface within the opening 308D.

IL, an illustrative example of configuration 100L of the multi-functional exercise system is shown, in which second exercise device 120 is implemented as one or more weight collar attachments 300D releasably coupled to the first exercise devices 110 implemented as dumbbells 200. In this example, one or more weight collar attachments 300D can be releasably coupled to either of weights 204,206 via coupling of second couplers 302D to first couplers 208,210. An exercise system, comprising:a first exercise device configured for resistance training and comprising one or more first couplers disposed on one or more exterior surfaces of the first exercise device, the one or more first couplers being quick connect type couplers; anda second exercise device comprising a second coupler configured to be releasably coupled to a first coupler of the one or more first couplers.

2. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the one or more first couplers are flush or substantially flush with the exterior surface.

3. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the one or more first couplers comprise male plugs.

4. The exercise system of claim 3, wherein the second coupler comprises a female receptacle.

5. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the second coupler is a quick connect, snap-fittable and releasably lockable device to the first coupler.

6. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the one or more first couplers and the second coupler comprise threaded fittings.

7. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the first exercise device is a dumbbell comprising a shaft and a weight coupled to each end of the shaft, and the weights comprise ones of the one or more first couplers on the exterior surface of a respective weight, wherein ones of the one or more first couplers are flush or substantially flush with the exterior surface.

The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the first exercise device is a barbell, the barbell having a shaft that is straight or bent and comprises grips, a collar is located adjacent to each grip, and weighted sleeves that are located axially outward of the respective collars, wherein ones of the one or more first couplers are disposed in the weighted sleeves, respectively.

10. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the first exercise device comprises a band having second couplers disposed on a first and second end.

11. The exercise system of claim 10, wherein the band is one of a resistance band, strength band, and rope.

12. The exercise system of claim 1, wherein the second exercise device is clevis coupler comprising a coupler body having a first end and a second end, wherein the second coupler is disposed on the first end and a clevis fastener is disposed on the second end, wherein the clevis fastener comprises one or more holes configured to receive a clevis pin and releasably couple the first exercise device to the clevis fastener.

13. The exercise system of claim 12, wherein the first exercise device is a hooked coupler comprising a coupler body having a first coupler of the one or more couplers extending from the coupler body and an eyelet body extending from the coupler body in a direction opposite the first coupler.

14. An exercise system, comprising:a dumbbell comprising a shaft and a weight coupled to each end of the shaft, each weight having an outer surface with a recess formed therein and a first coupler disposed within the recess such that an end of the first coupler is flush or substantially flush with adjacent portions of the outer surface when the first coupler is uncoupled; andan exercise device comprising and a second coupler, the second coupler configured to releasably couple to either of the first couplers in a load-bearing manner and to support the dumbbell by the exercise device in a plurality of orientations while permitting the dumbbell to be used as a stand-alone dumbbell when the first couplers are uncoupled.PATENT APPLICATION Docket No.103191-0010515. 17. The exercise system of claim 16, wherein the first and second couplers are quick connect, snap-fittable and releasably lockable devices.
