Description

TWO-COMPONENT SILICONE COMPOSITIONS, AND ARTICLES AND USE THEREOFTechnical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a two-component silicone composition. In particular, the present invention relates to a two-component silicone composition with good electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance.Background of the invention

[0002] The automotive industry has undergone a significant transformation with the rapid integration of electronic systems, driven by advances in connectivity, electrification and autonomous driving. Modern vehicles now rely on complex electronics such as infotainment systems, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) , electric powertrains (in EVs) and sensor arrays for autonomous functions. However, these systems generate and are susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI) , which can disrupt critical operations, compromise safety or lead to non-compliance with regulatory standards.

[0003] The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is exacerbating EMI challenges due to high-voltage components such as inverters and chargers that emit strong electromagnetic noise. Similarly, autonomous systems depend on interference-free operation of radars, LiDAR and V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communications. EMI gaskets therefore play a key role in protecting these technologies.

[0004] EMI gaskets are specialised shielding components designed to block interference by sealing gaps and openings in electronic housings, body panels or connectors. Unlike traditional gaskets that simply prevent dust or water ingress, EMI gaskets incorporate conductive materials (such as metal-filled silicone, conductive foam or beryllium copper springs) to create a continuous conductive path. This conducts EMI energy to ground and prevents leakage through seams or joints that could act as unintended antennas.

[0005] Automotive environments demand durability under harsh conditions -vibration, temperature extremes and exposure to chemicals. EMI gaskets must maintain conductivity and mechanical strength throughout the life of the vehicle. Innovations in materials, such as silver-, nickel-or carbon-filled elastomers, balance flexibility with shielding effectiveness (often measured in decibels, dB) .

[0006] High compression rate, high aspect ratio of EMI gaskets are two desired features in today's design and manufacturing challenges.

[0007] Low compression force (high compression rate) gaskets require minimal pressure to achieve an effective EMI seal. This reduces stress on sensitive components (such as PCB housings, connectors or sensors) during assembly and throughout the product lifecycle, preventing deformation or damage to fragile electronics. Automotive manufacturing requires high-speed, automated processes. Low compression force gaskets allow for easier installation, reducing assembly time and labour costs. They also accommodate tight dimensional tolerances in stamped metal or plastic housings, improving yield rates. In harsh automotive environments (vibration, thermal cycling) , low compressive force minimises material fatigue. The gasket maintains consistent contact and shielding performance without "over-compression" , ensuring continued EMI protection over the life of the vehicle.

[0008] High aspect ratio gaskets (thin in height but wide in contact area) are ideal for narrow gaps or tight spaces that are common in modern vehicles. For example, they can seal narrow joints between battery enclosures in electric vehicles or gaps around infotainment systems without taking up excessive vertical space. A wider contact area improves conductivity across the seam, reducing the risk of EMI leakage. This is critical for high frequency applications (5G, radar or ADAS sensors) where even small gaps can act as unintended antennas. High aspect ratio gaskets conform better to uneven or rough surfaces (e. g. cast aluminium housings or composite panels) , ensuring a continuous conductive path. This compensates for manufacturing variations, which is critical to maintaining EMI shielding integrity in mass-produced vehicles. The combination of high compression rate and high aspect ratio allows the gasket to absorb vibration and thermal expansion / contraction without losing contact. This is critical for components such as electric drive units or on-board chargers, where mechanical movement and heat generation are significant.Summary of the invention

[0009] It is therefore the object of the present invention to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks by providing a two-component silicone composition with low compression force and high aspect ratio, which exhibits a good performance as EMI gaskets.

[0016] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” include both singular and plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. For example, reference to "a filler" encompasses embodiments having one, two or more fillers. As used in this specification and the appended claims, the term "or" is generally employed in its sense including "and / or" unless the content clearly dictates otherwise.

[0017] The terms “comprising” , “comprises” and “comprised of” as used herein are synonymous with “including” , “includes” or “containing” , “contains” , and are inclusive or open-ended and do not exclude additional, non-recited members, elements or process steps.

[0018] The recitation of numerical end points includes all numbers and fractions subsumed within the respective ranges, as well as the recited end points.

[0019] Unless otherwise defined, all terms used in the disclosing the invention, including technical and scientific terms, have the meaning as commonly understood by one of the ordinary skills in the art to which this invention belongs to. By means of further guidance, term definitions are included to better appreciate the teaching of the present invention.

[0061] In some embodiments, the lower limit of the thixotropic agent is 1.5 wt. %, or 2 wt. %, or 3 wt. %, or 4 wt. %; the upper limit of the thixotropic agent is 10 wt. %, or 9 wt. %, or 8 wt. %, or 7.5 wt. %, or 7 wt. %, based on the total weight of the silicone composition.

[0062] Thixotropic agents such as fumed silica (e.g., hydrophilic or hydrophobic grades) or silicate salts (e.g., magnesium silicate, calcium silicate) are particularly effective in imparting shear-thinning properties. These agents ensure the composition maintains structural integrity under static conditions while allowing smooth application under shear.

[0063] Commercially available thixotropic agents suitable for use in the present invention are fumed silica including Aerosil 200, Aerosil R812 from Evonik Industries, Cab-O-Sil TS-720 from Cabot Corporation.

[0064] The thixotropic agents suitable for use in the present invention also can be magnesium silicate like Laponite by BYK Additives, calcium silicate Hubersil from Huber Engineered Materials, bentonite clays like Bentone from Elementis and polyamide waxes like Crayvallac from Arkema.

[0065] Solvent

[0066] The two-component silicone composition of the present invention comprises a solvent. Solvents suitable for use in the present invention are selected from the group consisting of water, methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene glycol, propyl acetate, butyl acetate, dibasic esters, ethyl proxitol ethoxypropanol, and card. Alcohol acetate, 2-methoxy-1-methyethyl acetate, carbitol acetate, 2-methoxy-1-methylethyl acetate, Dipropylene glycol methyl ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, 2-butoxyethanol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, 4-methyl-1, 3-dioxane Pentocyclo-2-one, dimethyl sulfoxide, N-methyl-2-pyroridone, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol Alcohol ether acetate, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, phenol, terpineol, γ-butyrolactone, methyl succinate and glutaric acid methyl and an ester mixture of dimethyl adipate, butyl glycol acetate, and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the solvent is selected from the group consisting of 2-methoxy-1-methylethyl acetate, butyl glycol acetate, carbitol acetate, dibasic esters, and mixtures thereof.

[0067] Commercially available solvents suitable for use in the present invention are, for example, 2-methoxy-1-methylethyl acetate and dibasic esters available from Sigma Aldrich; and butyl glycol acetate and carbitol available from EASTMAN. Acetate.

[0068] The 2K silicone composition of the present invention comprises from 3 to 20%by weight, or from 4 to 15%by weight, or from 4.5 to 12%by weight of a solvent, based on the total weight of the silicone composition.

[0069] The total amount of solvent in the 2K silicone composition according to the present invention preferably does not exceed 20%by weight based on the total weight of the silicone composition. The high amount of solvent in the composition will result in low aspect ratio and poor processability.

[0070] In addition, too high a solvent amount will result in a high volume-resistance and will cause poor shielding properties. On the other hand, low solvent amounts will result in high viscosity.

[0071] Inhibitor (g)

[0072] According to the present invention, the two-component silicone composition comprises an optional inhibitor to control the reaction speed and pot life.

[0073] In some embodiments, the inhibitor can be vinyl containing siloxanes, alkynes, alkynols, maleates and so forth.

[0074] Examples of commercially available inhibiters include tetravinyltetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (MVC) from Evonik and 3, 5-dimethyl-1-hexyn-3-ol from J&K Scientific Company.

[0075] The inhibitor is present in an amount of from 0.001 wt. %-0.01 wt. %, preferably 0.001 wt. %-0.005 wt. %based on the total weight of the silicone composition.

[0076] Optional additives

[0077] The compositions of the present invention will typically further comprise optional additives, which are necessarily minor components, but which can nevertheless impart improved properties to these compositions. The total amount of optional additives in the compositions will preferably be up to 10 parts by weight, and more preferably from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight or from 0.1 to 7.5 parts by weight, of the composition. The desired viscosity of the compositions will typically be determinative of the total amount of optional additives added. Examples of suitable additive includes glass bubble, such as VS5500 from 3M US.

[0078] Preparing Method of the 2-component silicone composition

[0079] The 2-component silicone compositions could be prepared by any suitable process. The silicone compositions are formulated by simple mixing all the components of component A and mixing all the components of component B.

[0080] No particular restrictions are required to prepare the silicone composition, as long as the method complies with a conventional method to prepare a two-component silicone composition. A 2-liter planetary mixer (manufactured by PC Laborsystem Co., Ltd. ) was used in the present invention to prepare the component A and the component B of the silicone composition.

[0132] Test Methods

[0133] Aspect ratio

[0134] The components A and B were separately filled into cartridges and dispensed with Nordson E3+Valvemate 7197PCP 2K dispensing equipment. The needle diameter is 1 mm and the dispensing speed is 50mm / s. After the sample being dispensed on the glass, it was cured in oven at 100 ℃ for 30 minutes. The width and height were measured after curing and the aspect ratio was calculated by height / width.

[0135] Aspect ratio results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0136] - Not pass: the aspect ratio is less than 0.65,

[0137] - Pass: the aspect ratio is equal to or greater than 0.65,

[0138] - Good: the aspect ratio is equal to or greater than 0.8,

[0139] - Excellent: the aspect ratio is equal to or greater than 1.0.

[0140] Compression rate at 15 N / cm

[0141] The components A and B were separately filled into cartridges and dispensed with Nordson E3+Valvemate 7197PCP 2K dispensing equipment. The needle diameter is 1.2 mm, and the dispensing speed is 50mm / s. After the sample being dispensed on the glass, it was cured in oven at 100 ℃ for 30 minutes. The cured sample was cut by the length of 40mm and tested by Mecmesin multitest 10-I to get the compression rate at a force of 15 N / cm. Test speed was 5mm / s.

[0143] - Not pass: the compression rate is less than 12%,

[0144] - Pass: the compression rate is equal to or greater than 12%,

[0145] - Good: the compression rate is equal to or greater than 20%.

[0146] Volume resistance

[0147] The test sample was cut from cured silicon composition sample to 40mm*40mm and tested by MCP-T710. Keep test time of 10s.

[0151] - Good: the volume resistance is equal to or less than 50 mΩ*cm.

[0152] Average shielding effect, 300 MHz ~ 20 GHz

[0153] The test sample was cut from cured silicon composition sample. The shielding effect was tested by Coaxial Flange Method (ASTM D4935-18 Standard) (300 MHz ~ 2.6 GHz) and Waveguide Method (2.6 GHz ~ 20 GHz) . The average data was calculated by all data collected under this frequency.

[0154] Average shielding effect, 300 MHz ~ 2.6 GHz, are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0158] Table 1.

[0159] Table 1 shows the 2K silicone compositions of E1-E8 and CE1-CE4.

[0160] Table 2.

[0161] Table 2 shows testing results of the 2K silicone compositions E1-E8 and CE1-CE4.

[0162] In Examples 1 to 8, the 2K silicone compositions were prepared according to the formulations provided by the present invention. It can be seen that when the contents of the claimed components of the present invention are within certain ranges, the prepared 2K silicone compositions show high compression rate (equal to or greater than 12%) , high aspect ratio (equal to or greater than 0.65) . Moreover, the volume resistance and average shielding effect are all qualified.

[0163] From CE1, it can be seen that even if the total amount of conductive filler is sufficient, the small particle size filler negatively affects the compression rate, volume resistance and average shielding effect.

[0164] Compared with E5, the filler content in CE2 is less than claimed scope. Given the inadequate filler content, it is necessary to increase the content of other powders, such as thixotropic agent, in order to ensure that the silicone composition possess appropriate viscosity and thixotropic values. Consequently, the amount of solvent required also increases. An excess of thixotropic agent can compromise the compression rate, while an insufficient amount of thixotropic agent can result in a viscosity so low as to adversely affect the construction.

[0165] Compared to E7, CE3 contained an excess of electrically conductive filler and an insufficient amount of solvent. Instead of an increase in conductivity, the conductivity of the silicone composition decreased sharply, which indicates that less solvent content has a negative effect on the conductivity. Compared with E3 and CE4, it can be seen that inadequate thixotropic agent impacts the aspect ratio. The silicone composition of CE4 might not be suitable for use as a sealant due to low aspect ratio.
