[0004] Description

[0005] Fuel hose coupling, fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system

[0006] The invention pertains to a fuel hose coupling for coupling two fuel hose ends, a fuel hose system and a method for coupling a hose system

[0007] Several hose couplings are known in the art. For example it is known to push two ends of hoses on a piece of connection tube and externally clamp both hose ends to the tube thereby establishing a sealed connection of two fuel hoses.

[0008] In particular for industrial sized fuel hoses the production length of fuel hoses is limited due to the complexity in the manufacturing. Hence a need is given to connect one or more hoses to each to obtain larger hoses, e.g., for fueling of ships or for charging and discharging fuel from tankers or oil vessels.

[0009] US 2002 / 0070547 A1 shows an adapter and coupler assembly has two externally threaded adapters, one left-hand threaded and the other right-hand threaded, and an internally threaded coupler, one end left-hand threaded, the other end right-hand threaded.

[0010] It is an object of the invention to create a fuel hose coupling capable of coupling two ends of fuel hoses without using any special tools especially crimping or pressing tools.

[0011] Another object of the invention is to provide a fuel hose coupling of high mechanical strength, a smooth outer surface as well as of a pleasant appearance. Further it is an object of the invention to provide a fuel hose coupling which is capable of establishing a fuel hose connection without turning the ends of the hoses thereby avoiding an unwanted prestressed mounting. Thereby the coupling should be easy to assembly, cost effective in manufacturing and assembly as well as being robust even in harsh environments.

[0012] The objects regarding the fuel hose coupling are solved by a fuel hose coupling defined in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in the subclaims directly or indirectly depending on claim 1.[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0013] Fuel hose coupling, fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system

[0014] Danfoss A / S

[0015] A fuel hose coupling according to the invention comprises a first hose plug, and a second hose plug each having a tubular form defining an axial direction Z. The first hose plugs having an outer diameter, an inner diameter, a thread on the outer circumference at a first end portion and a press-fit portion on the outer circumference at a second end portion. A fuel hose coupling according to the invention further comprises a connector ring having a tubular form with a connector outer diameter, a connector inner diameter, a first connector opening at a first side in the axial direction Z, a second connector opening at the second side in the axial direction Z. The connector further shows a connector thread at an inner circumference configured as a counterpart of the threads of the first and second hose plugs. Each of the press-fit portions of the first hose plugs comprise at least one first protrusion at the outer circumference having a first radial extension in a radial direction R. Each of the first protrusion can be inserted to an open end of a fuel hose by means of press-fitting. Further, the thread of a first hose plug is screwable into the connector at the first connector opening and the thread of a second hose plug is screwable into the connector at the second connector opening to form a coupling junction when the first hose plug, the second hose plug, and the connector are screwed together. For this the threads on the hose plugs are of different orientation. One thread is a right-hand thread and the thread on the other plug is a left-hand thread. As the connector shows the correspondent right- and left-hand threads, too, two hoses equipped with hose plugs according to the invention inserted to one hose end can be screwed together by turning the connector in only one direction.

[0016] Hence, in a preferred embodiment the connector shows two different threads one right hand thread at one end region and one left hand thread on the other end region, wherein the two threaded sections are arranged in the connector symmetrically. By realizing the connector in this way the connector can be screwed-on simultaneously on both threaded ends of the hose plugs in the same screwing / turning direction of the connector and the two hose plugs - preferably already press-fitted in their respective hose ends - are pulled / drawn together in axial direction until they end surfaces abut against each other.

[0017] Hence, such a fuel hose coupling is capable of connecting two ends of fuel hoses without any prestressed mounting as the connector can be screwed on the hose plugs independently, thereby bringing only an axial force onto the ends of the hose plugs while connecting the hoses.

[0018] According to a preferred embodiment a front surface of the first hose plug at the side of the thread is tilted with respect to a radial direction R in order to form a kind of chamfer for providing a sealing surface in combination with the other hose plug front face which is preferably tilted complementary / opposite with respect to the radial direction R of the tilted front surface of the other, first hose plug so that the two tilted surfaces are pressed together and form a[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0021] fuel tight sealing connection when the connector is screwed on the hose plugs for joining them together.

[0022] With this measurement it's easy to provide a conical seat of both plugs with respect to each other thereby easily establishing a central finding of the plugs during mounting, too. Further, with a conical seat can be established providing a sealing function also. A further benefits is that the inner surfaces of the plugs are flush to each other thereby minimizing the flow resistance and turbulences for the fuel transported within the hoses.

[0023] In an alternative embodiment of the invention the tilted sealing surfaces described before are integrated inside the connector at the inner ends of the corresponding threads. This enables to manufacture the two hose plugs as same parts with except the thread orientation, thereby reducing manufacturing costs for the plugs. On the other hand it might be preferred to a conical surface always on the right-hand threaded hose plug and an outer conical surface always on the left-hand threaded hose plug for an easier identification to select a pair of hose plugs suitable the hose connection according to the invention. Needless to say that the combination of thread orientation and conical surface orientation can be interchanged without leaving the idea of the invention.

[0024] In a further alternative the sealing surfaces in the internal center of the connector may also be realized by a sealing ring which is compressed by the end surfaces of the two hose plugs when joining the hose plugs together by screwing the connector on the threads of the hose plugs. Here one can think of providing an internal central groove in the connector, into which such a sealing ring can be inserted. As the connector shows two threads with opposite handedness, for manufacturing reasons of the two threads with opposite handedness in the connector, there must be thread free area in form of an internal groove between the ends of the two threads, having at a groove diameter corresponding at least to the root diameter of the thread. This groove can be used for placing a sealing ring at which the front surfaces of the hose plug can abut and seal the hose junction such that no fuel can exit the hose junction in operation of a fuel hose system according to the invention.

[0025] Such a sealing ring can be made of metal, plastic and / or rubber material and can show a rectangular and / or conical cross section. Here a person skilled in the relevant art will find several possibilities to form a fuel tight sealing contact between the sealing ring and front faces of the hose plugs, which in this alternative embodiment can show front surfaces perpendicular or tilted with respect to the axial hose direction.[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0026] Fuel hose coupling, fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system

[0027] Danfoss A / S

[0028] To assure that a sufficiently high axial force which can brough onto the hose plugs for pressing them together and for achieving a good sealing contact inside the connector by means of the sealing surfaces - on the hose plug and / or on the sealing ring - the connector can provide on its external surface suitable actuation means or surfaces to which tools for tightening the connector to the hose plugs can be applied. Here one can think about surfaces providing a seat for a wrench or tongs or simply a hole to insert a lever bar for turning the connector. A person skilled in the relevant art will find a lot of other possibilities on how a tightening moment can be brough up on the connector for securely and tightly fixing the hose connection according to the invention.

[0029] For achieving a smooth outer skin / surface of the coupled hose, the connector outer diameter is preferably equal or less than the radial extension of the first protrusions of the press-fit portions. This enables that a hose snippet can be placed over the connector to obtain a flush outer skin, e.g. by means of snippet made of the fuel hose material or by means of shrink hose. In general, when the connector is surrounded by a rubber layer or similar, a flush outer surface can be created for protecting the connector and the hose plugs and for preventing that the enlarged fuel hose easily engages or get damaged at subjects close to point of use, e.g., to the ship's panel or clamps in the vicinity where the enlarged hose is laid down and / or pulled and moved, e.g., in axial direction out of his storage compartment.

[0030] To simplify the mounting of a hose it is preferable that the outer diameter of the first and / or second hose plug at their axial ends of the press-fit portion decrease towards a second end surface.

[0031] It may be useful that the first protrusion annularly surrounds the press-fit portion with a constant height, and a second protrusion annularly surrounds the press-fit portion with a constant height, and that the heights of the first and second protrusion is the same. Protrusions of the same and constant height help to simplify the manufacturing of the hose plugs. On the other hand a lower diameter of the annular protrusion adjacent to the second end of the press-fit portion facilitate mounting the press-fit portion into the hose end. In a simple embodiment one annular protrusion on the press-fit portion would suffice the idea of the invention as the annular protrusion is provided to seal the hose plug against the interior wall of hose and to increase the elastic force between the annular protrusion and the hose for achieving a tight connection between these two components. However, for robustness and reliability reasons it is preferred to have more than one annular protrusion on the press-fit region of the hose plugs.[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0032] Fuel hose coupling, fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system

[0033] Danfoss A / S

[0034] Within another embodiment a plurality of protrusions is provided on the press-fit portions. This may be preferred for elastic hoses when long press-fit areas are beneficial for holding the hose on the plug fixedly in axial direction. Here a long press-fit section enhances the holding forces in axial direction. Which should be supported by annular protrusions for achieving under-cut-like sealing contours. This helps to improve a firm seat of the hose on the outer surface of the hose plug by enlarging the friction.

[0035] In order to create a prestressed condition between the hose plugs and the thread of the connector and therefore in order to minimize the risk of unwanted releasing the connection the first hose plug, and the second hose plug contacts each other when the coupling junction is formed. As already mentioned above, by means of a contact between the two end faces of the plugs a fuel tight sealing can be achieved, too, which otherwise has to be done in a different way, e.g., by using sealing rings or similar between a shoulder at the inner thread end on the plug and an axial end face of the connector. Even though this is not a preferred embodiment, it is covered by the idea of the invention. Another possibility to achieve a fuel tight sealing of the hose connection according to the invention is to use a shrink hose covering the axial length of the hose connection. Also hose clamps in the region of both hose plug can provide for such a sealing, however eliminating the intended and preferred smooth and flush outer surface of the hose connection according to the invention with the remaining hose.

[0036] For this and in order to unify the external skin and appearance of the fuel hose connection the fuel hose coupling comprises a hose snippet which surrounds the connector.

[0037] The objects regarding the fuel hose system are solved by a fuel hose system defined in claim 10.

[0038] A fuel hose system according to the invention comprises a hose coupling according to the invention, a hose snippet, a first hose, and a second hose, wherein the press-fit portion of the first hose plug is press-fitted into an opening of the first hose, and the press-fit portion second of the second hose plug is press-fitted into an opening of the second hose, and the hose snippet is configured to surround the connector in order to form a hose junction covered in the coupling area, too.

[0039] Within preferred embodiment of the fuel hose system the outer diameter of the first and second hose plugs is less than an outer diameter of the first and second hose and greater than an inner diameter of the first and second hose, wherein the outer diameter of the protrusions at the press-fit portions is less than the outer diameters of the first and second hose, and the outer[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0042] diameter of the protrusions at the press-fit portions is bigger than the inner diameters of the first and second hose. By doing this it is assured that the hoses are mounted prestressed on the press-fit portion of the hose plugs.

[0043] In order to create a smooth outer surface and therefore a smooth respectively continuous outer appearance of the coupling the connector and the hose snippet preferably comprise the same extension in the axial direction and the same or similar radial extension than the hoses to be connected. Therewith the hose junction forms a smooth surface with the outsides of the first hose to the second hose with the outside of the hose snippet in between.

[0044] Reason of improving the outer appearance by providing the first hose, the second hose, and the hose snippet comprise with the same outer diameter, is that the outer skin of an enlarged fuel hose system according to the does not comprise step at the outer skin, which could unintentionally engage with other objects in the vicinity of use of the fuel hose system according to the invention and harms the hose(s) or the hose junction. With a flush outer skin, in particular axial movements of the fuel hose system can be realized easier not producing damages to the fuel hose system or to objects in the vicinity by means of sharp edges or similar.

[0045] Additionally the first hose, the first hose plug, the second hose plug, and the second hose comprise a similar inner diameter. The letter may be useful for improving, particularly lowering of the flow resistance of the coupling portion.

[0046] The objects regarding the method for coupling a fuel hose system are solved by alternative methods for coupling a fuel hose system defined in claim 14 or 15.

[0047] A first alternative method of coupling a hose system according to the invention, comprises at least the steps of: (S1) press-fitting the first hose plug by at least partially inserting the press-fit portion into the first hose, (S2) press-fitting the second hose plug by at least partially inserting the press-fit portion into the second hose, (S3) inserting the connector into the hose snippet so that the hose snippet surrounds the connector, and (S4) forming the hose junction by screwing the connector onto the threaded portions of the first hose plug, and the second hose plug, thereby the two hose ends with the inserted hose plugs are drawn to each other / pulled together.

[0048] A second alternative method of coupling a hose system according to the invention comprises the steps of: (S11) inserting the connector into the hose snippet so that the hose snippet surrounds the connector, (S12) forming the hose junction by screwing the first hose plug, the[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0051] second hose plug, and the connector together; (S13) press-fitting the first hose plug by at least partially inserting the first press-fit portion into the first hose, and (S14) press-fitting the second hose plug by at least partially inserting the second press-fit portion into the second hose.

[0052] In preferred embodiments of both methods of coupling a hose system the free front surfaces of the hose plugs inserted in the two hose ends contact each other in the end position at the center of the connector. Further preferred this contact of the end surfaces of the hose plug provide for a fluid sealed contact such that, in operation of the fuel hose system no fuel exits via the fuel hose junction according to the invention.

[0053] In the following by the help of the annexed Figures, exemplary embodiments of fuel hose coupling according to the invention are described. The presented embodiments are not intended to limit the scope of the invention. The invention will be described referring to the drawings which show:

[0054] Figure 1 : an exploded isometric view of an embodiment of a fuel hose coupling according to the invention;

[0055] Figure 2: an schematic view of the hose coupling of the invention according to Figure 1 in a coupled status;

[0059] A fuel hose system 1 according to the invention comprises a fuel hose coupling 2 of the invention. The fuel hose coupling 2 comprises at least a first hose plug 3 and a second hose plug 4 and a connector 5.

[0060] The first hose plug 3 can be inserted with its press-fit portion 34 into an open end 93 of a first hose 9 along an axial direction Z. The second hose plug 4 can be inserted into an open end[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0062] Danfoss A / S

[0063] 103 of a second hose 10 along the axial direction Z. Each of the hoses 9 &10 has an outer surface 91 , 101 and an inner surface 92, 102.

[0064] Both hose plugs 3 and 4 have an outer surface 31, 41, an inner surface 32, 42 and an outer thread 33, 43 on one end of the hose plugs 3, 4. The threads 33, 43 are located on a first end portion of the plugs 3, 4 and protrude from the hose ends 93, 103 in axial direction. At their free ends adjacent to the threads 33, 43 both plugs 3, 4 have a first front face 35, 45. The first front faces 35, 45 in this embodiment are of complementary conical design allowing an axially guided mounting of the two plugs 3 and 4 when brought together in the axial direction Z. Further, the complementary conical front faces 35, 45 are capable of providing a sealed seat thereby avoiding any further additional radial or axial sealing item.

[0065] On the opposite side of the outer threads 33, 43 a second end surface is present having a conical shape which simplifies the insertion of the plugs 3, 4 into the free ends 93, 103 of the hoses 9, 10.

[0066] The threads 33, 43 preferably have the same diameter and the same pitch, however opposite handedness. In case one of the threads 33, 43 is a right-hand thread, the other one is a lefthand thread. Consequently the connector also shows two internal threads of opposite handedness.

[0067] Further, at an axial distance to the thread 33, 43 the two hose plugs 3, 4 comprise at least one protrusion 6 or 7, preferably two annular protrusions 6, 7 protruding radially outwards in a radial direction R from the outer surface 31 , 41. The outer diameter of the annular protrusions 6, 7 is preferably larger than an inner diameter of the hoses thereby stretching elastically the hoses in radial direction when the hose plugs 3, 4 are pushed / inserted into the respective open free ends 93, 103 of the hoses 9, 10. By stretching the hoses elastically and radially outwards, a prestressed sealed seat of the press-fit portions 34, 44 of the plugs 3, 4 within the hoses 9, 10 is achieved.

[0068] Thus, the plugs 3, 4 of a single fuel hose coupling 2 - in a non-inserted state - form a corresponding pair of plugs 3, 4 with matching conical front surfaces 35, 45, namely an outer conical surface and a corresponding inner conical surface and with two threads having opposite handedness.

[0069] The connector 5 is of a cylindrical hollow shape and has an outer diameter 51 and an inner diameter 52. Corresponding to the outer threads 33, 43 of the plugs 3, 4 the connector 5,[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0071] Danfoss A / S

[0072] e.g., has a corresponding left-hand inner thread in the region of a first opening 53 corresponding to the left-hand outer thread 43 of the plug 4. Correspondingly the connector 5 has a respective right- hand inner thread in the region at the opposite, second opening 54 corresponding to the right hand outer thread 33 of the plug 3.

[0073] By rotating the connector 5 around the longitudinal axis / axial direction Z the plugs 3, 4 can be drawn closely to each other until the complementary conical surfaces 35, 45 abut against each other thereby establishing a fixed and robust as well as sealed and / or axially centered connection between the plugs 3, 4.

[0074] An optionally further part of the fuel hose coupling 2 is a hose snippet 8 of preferably cylindrical shape, too, having an outer surface 81 and an inner surface 82. The diameter of the outer surface 81 is preferably similar to the outer diameter of the hoses 9 & 10 such that, when the snippet 8 is positioned around the connector 5 and between the outer surfaces of the hoses 9 and 10, the outer surface 81 of the snippet 8 flush in an axial direction Z with the outer skin of the hose 9 and 10.

[0075] The inner surface 82 of the snippet preferably has such an inner diameter in its non-ex-panded condition that a tough seat is established on the connector 5 if the snippet 8 is pushed onto the outer surface 51 of the connector 5. It is preferred that the snippet 8 on the connector 5 in this expanded mounting position has the same outer diameter as the ends of the tubes 9, 10.

[0076] As can be seen in Figures 1 to 3, the connector 5 optionally can comprise an actuator hole 56 for inserting a lever for turning the connector on the threads 33, 43 of the hose plugs 3, 4. From this at least a skilled person derives that other actuation means can be applied to the connector 5 for turning the connector 5 with a sufficient torque in order to achieve a strong fixing of the two hose plugs 3, 4 in the axial direction, in which the end surfaces 36, 46 of the hose plugs 3, 4 abut in a sealing contact to each other or abut in a sealing contact against a sealing ring which might be arranged in a central groove 57 (c.f. Figures 2 & 3) of the connector 5. One can also imagine that the connector 5 comprise a rough or ribbed outer surface 51 and the snippet 8 comprise a corresponding rough or ribbed inner surface 82 so that a tongs or similar acting on the outer surface 81 of the snippet 8 can twist the connector 5 via the snippet 8. As already mentioned above a skilled person will find a plurality of possibilities to apply a torque on the connector 5 for strongly drawing the front surfaces 35, 45 of the hose plugs 3, 4 to each other in order to obtain a fuel tight hose junction according to the invention.[File: 103292617.docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0077] Fuel hose coupling, fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system

[0078] Danfoss A / S

[0079] With reference to Figure 4, a first alternative of a method of establishing a connec-tion / junction of two hoses according to the invention is described:

[0080] First, during steps S1 and S2 each of the plugs 3, 4 is press fitted with its press-fit portion 34, 44 into an open end 93, 103 of a corresponding hose 9, 10 in order to establish a sealed seat of the plugs 3, 4 within the respective hoses 9, 10. The threads 33, 43 of each of the plugs 3, 4 protrudes from the end of the hoses 9, 10.

[0081] In a third step which may occur at the same time, before or after the steps S1 and S2 the connector 5 is inserted into the snippet 8 thereby forming a connector 5 surrounded, e.g., by the same material as the hoses 9, 10. Of course, the snippet 8 can also be of different material as the material of the hoses 9, 10.

[0082] During a fourth step S4 forming of the inventive connection of the hose coupling 2 is executed by positioning both threads 33, 43 of the plugs 3, 4 to the respective first and second openings 53, 54 of the connector 5 and turning / twisting the connector 5 around the axial direction Z in order to pull the plugs 3, 4 together in an axial direction until the corresponding conical surfaces 35, 45 on the hose plugs 3, 4 establish a sealed and axially prestressed connection.

[0083] A second alternative of a method of establishing a connection of two hoses according to the invention is described below with reference to Fig 5:

[0084] In this alternative in a first step S11 the connector 5 is inserted into the snippet 8 as described above.

[0085] In a second step S12 the connection between two corresponding plugs 3, 4 is established by screwing them together with the connector 5. Here one can imagine that the hose plugs 3, 4 comprise a collar with a hexagonal shape where a wrench can be applied to for tighten the hose plugs 3, 4 into the connector 5 and against the sealing surfaces 35, 45.

[0086] After establishing the sealed and axially prestressed connection between the two plugs 3, 4 in the last step S13 the hoses 9, 10 are press fitted with their open ends 93, 103 onto the respective plugs 3, 4.

[0087] Of course it is also possible to establish the screwed connection between the plugs 3, 4 with the connector 5 according to step S12 first, and pull or push the snippet 8 afterwards but preferably[File: 103292617. docx / / DA97L83WO] Description February 26, 2026

[0090] before or in parallel to the press fitting of the plugs 3, 4 into the hoses 9, 10 over the connector 5.

[0091] The fuel hose coupling, the fuel hose coupling system and the methods to establish such a fuel hose coupling provide a mechanically stable, robust and fluidly sealed fuel hose coupling which has as an additional benefit a pleasant appearance.

[0092] From the above disclosure and accompanying Figures and claims, it will be appreciated that the fuel hose coupling, the fuel hose system and method for coupling a fuel hose system according to the invention offer many possibilities and advantages over the prior art.
