[0006] Proper installation and use of a wireless communication ammunition tag (Tag) provides for, and improves the efficiency of, wireless communication of information to and from the firearm operator, the ammunition, and the firearm.

[0008] Many firearms, a grenade launcher, for example, can fire many different types of ammunition, including kinetic, counter-defilade, etc. Without the Tag, the firearm operator would have to check each cartridge individually to know exactlywhat type of ammunition was being loaded and then adjust the launcher, or the fire control system, manually.

[0012] For the purposes of this Application the following terms are defined as follows:"Cartridge": Means a single, complete unit of ammunition, including the cartridge case, which is ejected from the firearm after firing, and the projectile, which is fired and travels down the barrel towards the target.“User”: Means the individual actually firing the firearm.“FCS”: Means a Fire Control System that controls the firearm's range, altitude, projectile drop compensation, reticle etc."Smart Projectile": Means a projectile that is able to do something other than simply follow its given trajectory, such as turning, changing speed, sending data, or activating, e.g., detonating, the projectile at a given range.

[0013] The preferred embodiment of the "Wireless Communication Ammunition Tag”, (Tag) comprises a transceiver located in a firearm allowing both the transmission and receipt of digital information, e.g., radio frequency identification (RFID) information, and a Tag located on the ammunition. Both transceiver and Tag are situated where they will not interfere with the function of the firearm. (Fig’s. 2 through 4.) The Tag, Fig. 1, can be located either on the cartridge case (Fig. 2), on the outside of the projectile, Fig. 3, or on the inside of the projectile, Fig. 4. In any embodiment, the Tag reader is located, either internally or externally, near the chamber of the firearm.

Claims

ClaimsI claim:

1. A method that provides wireless communication of information to and from a firearm operator or other individual; a firearm; and ammunition loaded in that firearm, or ammunition that is in transit or in storage.

2. The method in claim 1 wherein the wireless communication of information is between a wireless information tag installed at an appropriate location on the ammunition, and a transceiver installed at an appropriate location in or on the firearm, or installed in another suitable location if the ammunition is in transit or in storage.

3. The method in claim 2 wherein the wireless communication of information takes place between the transceiver and a tag located on the ammunition cartridge case.

4. The method in claim 2 wherein the wireless communication of information takes place between the transceiver and a tag installed on the outside of the casing of a projectile.

5. The method in claim 2 wherein the wireless communication of information takes place between the transceiver and a tag installed on the inside of the casing of a projectile.
